I did this over the summer and got a lot of interest, so I figured I might try it quarterly.

Ever since I discontinued the Discord, there hasn't been a good way to ask questions one on one. Some people do anyways in the comments of unrelated posts and I'm usually happy to answer, so comment a question you want me to answer under here and I'll do my best to answer it to the best of my ability! You can ask me about AvA/the content or more personal stuff, I reserve the right to not answer any question, yadda yadda. Fire away!

Do you have any regrets in your past battles? Like choices you made that you think the battle in question would be better without?

The

Has there ever been a time where you've wanted to do a match up but someone else has already done it or is already working on it, and you've decided against making it? Or would you ever make a battle thats already been done? Discounting Pomni vs Jevil seeing as there was a whole lot more to work with there

Sizzle !

Do you and all the other rap battle creators like share a discord or something. People like fightmarker and gaming plush64 often help with little things like mixing and mastering, or some of the art or perform as a guest character for a cameo and a plethora of other smaller or equivalently sized channels. Do you guys just have a discord server where you tell each other about the projects that you’re working on and ask for help on projects?

Julian

Is it possible to repost those little instrumental teasers you released on your shorts onto here? The one for Enter Subspace is still there, but is it possible to do so for the unreleased battles?

Ty Guy

Is THE BACKWOODS still scheduled to premiere this year?

Orrin Richardson

Do you make the instrumental or the lyrics first? Also how do you always knock it out of the park with your instrumentals!?

Tk40Gaming

How do you decide how many episodes are in an Animation vs Anything chapter?

NikPaul19

Have there been any matchups you’ve wanted to do or characters you wanted to use but couldn’t for one reason or another?

Trevor Birdsall

Regarding the Nifty vs Aqua original beat, do you plan on reusing it for a future battle? It's really good

carsfrankie

i know you’ve done battles with book characters before, but do you still plan on making more in the future? like maybe bone or big nate?

Wyatt Stringer

What do you listen to as you animate? What really helps you focus in on completing it besides the satisfaction of a completed project?

Eddiefrb

there's no concrete rule. i see the chapters more like stages in my creative journey than anything, so once i'm ready to move onto my next direction that signals a new chapter. the rest of chapter 3 consists of stuff that has been in development for a long time, most brand new stuff has been off-seasons for that reason

PowerPoint Rap Battles

What would you consider the top 5 AvAs from before Chapter 3? I am curious how your perception on the first two chapters has changed with time.

Eddiefrb

yes for pretty much every single one i've ever made. im very hard on myself creatively. on the bright side, i'm always improving and learning for future ones as a result

Eddiefrb

there was a period of time where I was heavily considering doing four vs flumpty for AvA, but teimunity did it instead and there were other complications with the idea so i decided against it

Eddiefrb

many of us have been friends for a very long time and there used to be more active community hubs like you are describing, but these days a lot of us keep to ourselves and our friends because we are getting older and as our channels grow we want to be more professional. if I want somebody's help with something I just reach out in DMs and we make it happen

Eddiefrb

i'll have to look and see if I even still have them. if I do, sure. some of them are scrapped though

Julian

Understood

Eddiefrb

no, it likely won't premiere until after chapter 3 is done, which won't be until next year at least. we are still working on it though

Eddiefrb

the instrumental always comes first but sometimes the specific arrangement of the instrumental (ie how long it is, what instruments play where, etc) will be done alongside the writing process and I'll adjust it as I go

Eddiefrb

there have been a lot of cases where I skipped out on using a character or franchise because I felt the timing was not right. for instance, i would love to eventually do a deltarune AvA with one of the main characters integral to the story, like the roaring knight, but it would be foolish to before the story has ended. I sometimes break this principle if I feel like there is enough material to work with already to achieve my desired vision (megumin vs ralsei and pomni vs jevil are two examples) but usually end up regretting it long term

Eddiefrb

thanks! but no, i'm probably not going to use it for anything. it was for practice before it was ever considered for niffty vs aqua so it'll probably end up as a throwaway alongside a bunch of other stuff i've produced for fun to learn this year

Eddiefrb

yes i do. i have ideas for both of these characters actually

MemeyNate

Love your content, looking forward to Peppino vs Suction Cup Man! What would you personally consider your best battle writing wise and additionally your best battle from an editing/animation perspective? You can answer for either of these points or both if you want!

Eddiefrb

i'm not an animator, I hire animators and artists, my hands on role on the series is the writing the lyrics and arranging the music. as for your second question I'm usually sick of a project by the time it's done because I've spent so much time thinking about it that I can't process it the way someone seeing it for the first time could, so I love getting it off my plate and being able to move onto something fresh

Eddiefrb

they're products of their time, i'm embarrassed by a lot of it now but i'm also glad they exist because seeing the growth over time is really cool and I couldn't do what I'm doing now without making those first. as for the top 5, in some order it would probably go like: spongebob vs captain underpants, stan vs saul, blue vs monokuma, tricky vs springtrap and salad fingers vs marionette (2023). probably the only 5 I would say hold up decently well on all fronts (although some of them have glaring issues still)

Dashawn Street

When are you going to do the thing where you ask everybody what ideas for battles are.

Eddiefrb

thank you! i think to date the writing i'm most proud of is doof vs doom. style matching MF DOOM was a challenge and I definitely did not live up to his greatness but it taught me a lot about writing and I still feel it's some of my most well written work lyrically. animation wise I think scm vs peppino might end up being the best looking AvA to date, but gumball vs baldi and anything enzo or patrick (cyancoat and gamingplush64) did for me are in the conversation too

Eddiefrb

probably after scm vs peppino is out. people have waited long enough and it feels disrespectful to post stuff on the channel if it's not either an update or the project itself. i don't want people to think it's not being worked on

MemeyNate

Oooooh those are amazing choices! Emulating the MF Doom mannerism was such an inspired creative decision on your end! I'm not fully acquainted with his music but from what I've heard, I'd say you pulled it off very well! And Gumball vs Baldi definitely has very faithful animation thanks in large part to Mars, and GP's AvA resume is certainly no slouch either! I don't doubt that SCM Man vs Peppino could surpass it given what you've shown of it so far!

Dr. Awkward

How did you decide on "Animation vs Anything" (that is to say, animated media vs anything else) as the theme for your rap battles?

H2o

Would you ever use Spiderverse characters in a battle (whether from the movies or comics)? Or would that be too much work on the animator to try and match up original style?

Eddiefrb

the "vs anything" series gimmick was very popular on the ERB wiki and in the mid 2010s there were various attempts to take it to an audio format. there was a series on the ERB wiki called "cartoons vs history" and as a big fan of animation it gave me the idea to try doing cartoons vs anything which became animation vs anything because its a catchier name

Eddiefrb

i might! but not before beyond the spiderverse

Krusty

How long does it take to make a rap battle Would you ever do an object show rap battle?

MandoMRB

1. Is there a battle that you’ve created that ever made you feel emotional? 2. Do you have any tips for someone who wants to start a rap battle channel?

JHComixIsKewl

Are you ever gonna do any of the battles that lost the people's champ 2024? I'd personally love to see Courage vs Parappa or Ed Edd n Eddy vs the Three Stooges from you someday

Ryan Monahan

I apologize for the massive wall of text in advance. 🙏 I'm looking to start my own FRB channel and making/releasing battles. The lyrics would be my contribution, and I would commission the rest. The issue that I'm running into is that I get a battle idea and immediately start working on the lyrics until I'm satisfied, then start looking for a beat or thinking about having one commissioned. The instrumentals always end up being an afterthought on my end, and I struggle to come up with how I want them to sound. How do you decide on how the instrumentals should sound for a given battle, and do you usually commission original beats or license an existing beat? Have you ever had the instrumental chosen/made after writing all of the lyrics before and making the instrumental fit them? My lyrics tend to be written as two 16-20 bar verses per character, and I tend to write them to a 90-110 BPM on a subconscious level, so I've been told it might be easier to make an existing beat fit naturally with the existing lyrics.

MusicVoiceOvers

How exactly do you find voice actors? I believe you have used castingcallclub but I haven't seen you post anything on there in quite a while, so this got me wondering how you do it nowadays.

W4NT3D

Have you ever been interested in battling in FRB?

DumbShlop

Hey Eddie, big fan I've just finished my first full watch of Breaking Bad, and I wanted to know if you have any top characters from it that you'd want to use?

Ash Pancakes

ava questions: 1. how to you cast animators for AvA, esp the more underground ones? (e.g. makina azul) do you reach out to them personally or do they just email you their work and you pick the most suitable one? 2. will all battles from now on be animated? 3. you have somewhat addressed this on your community post already, but what do you think about certain franchises being overly saturated in the community? personally (as a viewer), since ive never played deltarune/undertale, it gets repetitive that like half the battles all consist of a character from those franchises 4. not really a question, but i think seeing a directors cut of the process of making an AvA would be really cool to see :) 5. is it easy to be the biggest frb channel lol 6. this question is quite sensitive and i understand if you don't want to answer this, but what do you think of the whole freshy kanal situation, and have you also shared similar negative experiences working with him? 7. do you like poutine

Eddiefrb

gus fring and mike ehrmantraut both have matchups im fond of that i might pull out in future chapters if i feel demand is there

Eddiefrb

1. snow white vs ramona flowers when i first got the arrangement back from glitchdude. cant wait to finally release it 2. this isn't super interesting advice but the only way you'll be successful long term as a rap battle creator is if you fall in love with the process and part of that entails jumping in and figuring it out. theres no playbook and literally everybody has a different process for just about any stage. so my tip is to enjoy the process of figuring it out and putting something together without worrying about if its 'good' or not. it took me i dont even know how many years before i made something the modern community would consider 'good'. it was never about that for me and i attribute my success thus far to that

Eddiefrb

1. varies wildly depending on the battle but the production time from conception to release probably averages around 9 months 2. i might, but i don't know much about object shows and haven't done enough research to have any ideas i like. im aware of the demand though

Eddiefrb

first of all awesome to hear you wanna try your hand at making battles and i encourage you to give it a try. i always start with the instrumental because the lyrics will flow better when you already know what backing track you're writing them to. my process for finding beats is usually looking up type beats on youtube. i listen to a lot of music and when i'm conceptualizing a project I picture how I'd want it to sound before writing so I will look up (blank) type beat where (blank) is an artist, album, song or genre with a similar feel and start going through beats that way. over the years ive built up a playlist of beats I like that I refer to when i'm starting a new project to see if any of them fit (scm vs peppino is an example of this, found that beat looking for a different project) and I also have a bunch of producers i'm subscribed to that I check out whenever they drop a new beat. beat searching can be one of the least fun parts of the process for newcomers so I understand. My advice is that if you don't have a proper idea of what kind of beat you want, find existing battles with characters or sounds that might match what you're looking for, go into the description/credits and find who the beat was made by, look them up on youtube and then just start clicking through their beats and listening. that's really all it is

Eddiefrb

i've been in the space for almost 12 years so the majority of people I cast are people I already know through all sorts of different things. when I started, I did most of the voices myself and asked my friends if they wanted to lend their voices too. never hurts to send an email to somebody asking if they do voice commissions/roles for free and if you check the comments of smaller rap battle channels you might be able to find some people in a similar position as you and network that way

Eddiefrb

not really. i'm glad the community and its fans seem to be enjoying it but I much prefer the character writing aspect, and I feel like if I were to diss a real person who may even be a friend the way I write disses in my work itd be mean spirited.

Ryan Monahan

Thank you for the advice! I really appreciate it. Nearly all of my battle ideas involve characters/series that I hardly know anything about, so I've been checking out other battles featuring them to learn more before doing a further deep dive researching them and their series' stories/lore. I'll make a note to go back and focus on the instrumentals for them and check out the music producers for those battles as well. My thought process for the music was to find/commission beats that resemble music from one or both characters' series or their genres (or genres that would match the character, such as cyber trap for a character related to technology or future/Sci-Fi stuff or epic orchestral trap for a superhero character), though I'm not sure if that's the right way to go about it.

Thunderslanging

What is your advice for getting more into the rap battle community and or making my own? It’s been a growing thought of mine but I’m not sure how to start.

Eddiefrb

1. depends on the person. some people come to me, some people I reach out to. for makina he reached out to me asking if I needed help, so we got to work. that's definitely a clout diff so if you're asking for advice for a newcomer i'm not sure what to suggest aside from the usual networking. usually i build strong professional relationships with people and then work with them several times if they're interested 2. no, but most of them will be, and if the series goes to a chapter 4 and beyond thats one of my main goals to step the production up 3. my honest opinion is that as long as you're doing it because you have a good idea for a project and you really do care about the source material it shouldnt matter. i get why people get up in arms about series being overused (earlier this decade it was danganronpa, now it seems to be deltarune) especially if they aren't familiar or dislike the series, but I think it should be more recognized that the franchises are popular in battles because they are popular among the creators and the majority of the fanbase - the deltarune battles are being made by people who earnestly love deltarune and feel compelled to make stuff with their favourite characters. some days I feel like the entitlement in the community is getting a little out of hand, but it's the vocal minority of people complaining and at the end of the day i do understand how it could be annoying. 4. i haven't formerly announced it but I actually plan to do this as a patreon perk starting with scm vs peppino on release (probably patreon exclusive for like a month before going to the second channel, still figuring it out). have wanted to do it for a while but always overthought it so I'm just gonna give it a try and see how it goes 5. im not quite the biggest subscriber wise yet, but if that does end up happening someday, i think i'm ready. I'm honestly not the kind of person who enjoys having a large platform or being any kind of public figure, but i've been doing this for almost 12 years now, I'm confident in my ability to manage and grow the channel from a business perspective and I still have so much more to prove creatively. if my aspirations manifest, this is only the beginning. 6. my professional relationship with dustin for the past 5 years has been limited to commissioning him to mix and master my battles (before hiring VVDSOUND to do it starting this year). I did not write anything for him after happy appy vs flowey in 2020 so I can’t speak on working for him firsthand. as a result, it’s not something I care to post about in detail publicly. but, since you asked: I have disagreed with how he conducted his business for a long time and spoke to both him and the collaborators we share together about it during many instances over the past few years. At the end of the day, he’s an adult running his own rap battle operation, one of the few larger than mine, and the people I spoke to about it seemed to be fine with continuing to work for him anyways, so I voiced my opinion and left it at that. I didn’t know how many people felt wronged by him until it all came out and to be honest it’s still kind of upsetting to think about. i do not think he had bad intentions, and have no interest in kicking a man while he’s down, but I also don’t believe he was competent enough professionally to run the operation at the scale in which it existed, and I hope this incident sets a positive precedent for how to conduct business and behave professionally when money is involved in the community going forward. in case you or anybody else were worried I was exercising the same kind of business practices to get to where I am, I can assure you I have always and will always run my series very differently, and I maintain a strong relationship with all of my collaborators on both a personal and professional level. 7. it's my favourite food. I hope any non-canadians who have never tried it get a chance to in their lifetime

Eddiefrb

just make something! you have to put yourself out there. most people try their hand at making a battle, meet other creators as a result and work their way up. that's what I did. doesn't hurt to reach out to people via DMs or email, especially other people in the comments of smaller rap battle channels or people you recognize regularly in the comments of battles and make connections that way. discord servers probably exist for networking and hanging out but I keep to myself these days so I'm not sure where I would suggest you to look.

Thunderslanging

You’re the goat! I love your content btw!

Kamren The Person

Questions about Urban Legend Rap Battles! 1 : Out of the three that were made, which of them do you feel the most satisfied with? 2 : Would you consider using an Urban Legend for modern AvA (I.e : Bloody GIR vs Goner Kid) 3 : Do you have a favorite cryptid?

Diego Fox

I noticed that many of your battles feature characters from Indie Projects such as TADC and deltarune. What are your top 3 indie games and indie shows? Also, have you seen Indie Cross? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Eddiefrb

1. wario apparition vs herobrine is probably the best overall 2. yeah i would consider it 3. i always liked the loch ness monster

Eddiefrb

for games i really like undertale/deltarune, rivals of aether (1 and 2), yume nikki, cuphead, pizza tower, balatro, most newgrounds stuff and most stuff by valve (tf2 and the portal series chief among them). for series, my favourite is ena and i'm also fond of chikn nuggit, dont hug me im scared, death battle, erb (obviously), brain dump, satina, and i really liked rwby when i was younger. havent seen indie cross the series but I was around for the FNF mod so I should check it out, moro does great work. i love indie properties and they will continue to be a staple in the series going forward

Joel Parraway

What would you say are the steps to making a good animated rap battle. I want to make one but I don’t know how.

Ayden Bolden

I’m making my first rap battle do you have any tips for how I could make it entertaining I don’t have connections to do a animation and I don’t know if people still like png and clip rap battles no hate but I know people like your non animation rap battles but my lines don’t sound that good

Muse

When people ask what you do for a living do you tell them “Rap Battle Creator” or are you more vague?

Eddiefrb

depends on who is asking. usually terminology that matches the person's experience. if its a chronically online person i can usually just say i make those rap battle videos and it works out. if its like a grandma at a family get together its more of a "i make music" thing. i dont like to brag about the numbers but i will admit that being able to give numbers of subscribers and revenue and things of that nature make it easier to bridge the gap to normal people who might otherwise assume its some hobby or something

Eddiefrb

ive answered this question in some other replies

Eddiefrb

ive answered this question in some other replies, but i will say you should work with what you have. you probably wont be super great at it when you start out even if you have all the resources in the world. make it because you want to learn and find the process fun, not because youre expecting an immediate result, or you'll probably burn out very fast

Ayden Bolden

Ok and another question sorry do you know any good softwares to make beats

Trottin Plant

How do you decide what matchups you want to do for each chapter?

Ana

what is the next AVA after peppino vs suction cup man

H2o

I'm calling it now: it's probably Snow White vs Ramona Flowers

pomegranate_haze

In the future, do you see yourself remastering any of the newer releases?

Eddiefrb

hard to say, but maybe! I'm working on the second "reanimated" battle right now. i only do projects that i feel like I can substantially improve with modernized production value and a couple small polish changes. we'll have to see how the current stuff has aged in 5-ish years

Eddiefrb

i will announce it shortly after scm vs peppino is out

Eddiefrb

it's pretty spontaneous, i have some big projects I have planned from the beginning, but I always come up with new ideas I get excited about, so i make room for stuff that comes up mid-chapter too

pomegranate_haze

If anyone could improve their battles enough to remaster em in that time, it’s you. Been watching for a long time, and its always great to see how much you’ve improved. Keep up the good work goat
