Here's a wonderful exercise to train your eyes to get better at judging edges and values. This isn't just a beginner tutorial, it's great for all skill levels. You might feel like this is a bit boring, but believe me, it's really a good way to improve your skills.

I've added multiple photos of the same cloth in different positions, so you can pick whatever photo you like. Or make your own photos of course, or paint from life.

I've also added my working file, in case you want to take a look at my process.

Beginner Tutorial: Edges and Values - Exercise time!

Here's a great exercise when you want to work on improving the edges and values in your paintings. We'll be painting a piece of cloth with folds!

Thanks for this exercise :) . I just finished it. Is there a place where we can show it to you to get advice on what's wrong with it?

Art with Flo

There's a feedback & critique section in the Flocreate community at flocreate.com 👍🏻

Boysavior

Is there a color palette for this video?

Art with Flo

No there isn't, just stick with anything between white and black 👍🏻

Mikey

Is there a video that is helpful to learn how to blend and combine the colors more accurately? Mine are coming out very fuzzy

Hi Flo look forward to seeing your tattoo I personally think this is probably one of the best tutorials you have done for a beginner as a beginner who likes to run before he can walk this is one I should definitely have a go at. I am quite a keen photographer and in photography it’s all about the lights. The same as the drawing it’s all about getting the tonal values correct in this tutorial it teach me exactly that so looking forward to having a go. Thank you for all your time and effort trying to teach this old crony what to do. Xx

Wendy Dresser

Thanks Flo. A great training exercise. Your tutorials are so clear and I can follow them. I love that the different photos of the cloths range from simple to complex.

Thank you Anthony, I'm happy to hear that. I hope you'll have fun during this exercise :)

I am having trouble getting my source pic set up next to my canvas.

In your next vid can you draw coronavirus

Peter Jansen

Can you please show us how to split screen so we can have a reference on the left like you do please?

NK

Hi Flo! Could you add to the post brush you are mentioning in the video, please, "Block In" one? :)

Art with Flo

Oh my, I didn't say it in this video? I often tell it at the beginning of a video. Just swipe up from the bottom of your screen, you'll see a bar with apps. You can drag the app you want to use for your image to the side of your screen to open it in a secondary window. Good luck!

I actually like drawing and painting to forget about the virus, so I don't think I'll be drawing it

NK

Thank you :)

Hi Flo. I’m having trouble with the brush download. Where else might I find it?

Art with Flo

Have you tried using Chrome browser yet? Downloading through the app doesn't seem to work

Mollie Allen

I haven’t tried that yet. I will. Thank you!

Joe Kurian

Do you have the full Sketch Brush Collection?

Anthony allard

Thank you Flo I loved doing this one several times I nearly deleted it but I stuck with it and surprise myself thank you for all your time and effort looking forward to the next one xx

My pleasure! Your result looks wonderful Anthony

Hi since I am a new patreon member and got to have the pleasure to watch a dozen from your lovely well explained videos from the provided material, i have to ask a simple question which may be already has been asked before, what is the benefit from traceing an image instead of putting it in a layer and lower the opacity and begin from there? I’m really new at digital handdrawing or let it say drawing by hand at all. Keep on your wonderful work, just great!

Art with Flo

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. You mean placing a reference photo on a layer and then painting on top of it? I wouldn't suggest that. Tracing the basic shapes and creating a sketch on top of your reference, can help you train your muscle memory and help you understand the shapes. But after creating the sketch, I'd ditch the reference from your layers and just put it next to your work.

starmedia ART

ah okay i understand, it‘s to train drawing and not for getting easily a hand drawn picture effect from a real pic. Sorry for my bad english.

Celestia Young

Hey flo! I can’t download the block in brush or any of your sketch brushes via the post on my Patreon let alone any of the brushes you have. I’m twelve, and have parents and they can’t really help me. Please give me some tips cuz I can’t get them via the Patreon app on my iPad. Thx😀😎😎🥰🥰😍

Art with Flo

The Patreon app often doesn't work when you try to download something, it's best to use a browser like Chrome and go to patreon.com and log in through the website. Downloading should work if you follow that route

Great exercise Flo - I'm a newcomer to your Patreon site and a relative newcomer to Procreate - I'm looking forward to learning a lot from you.

Art with Flo

Thanks Betty, that's great to hear. Welcome to the community! If you ever have questions, just let me know :)

Hi !! Where I can get illustration brushes

Art with Flo

In the welcoming dm I sent you when you joined :)

Angela Lengkeek

In case you are looking for the photo Flo used, and like me downloading them all, it is cloth6! :)

Angela Lengkeek

Finished it, and I love these types of tutorials because it really improves my skills and hand eye brain cooordination, rather than just copying like with YCDT :) so more of these please!

Art with Flo

I'm happy you enjoyed it! I'm working on classes about fundamentals. So more stuff like this will definitely come :)

Jeremy Herring

Wow! I didn't think I could come close to doing anything like this! You proved me wrong!

Melissa Sheedy

This is soooo relaxing! And I love that you include several different angles to practice with. I get a little better every time. Thank you, Flo!!
