This is Flo's Fundamentals! In this series I'll be showing different fundamental subjects. Pieces of the puzzle you can use in your digital paintings. In this second class we'll be diving into the subject of water!

In the first part of the video, I'll talk about the theory. What does water look like and how does it behave? Water looks very different in various types of situations. Looking at your subject and studying it this way, will help you in the painting process. What are the characteristics you need to put in your painting to make the viewer believe he/she is looking at water?

In the second part of the video, I'll be doing a demonstration and show you how I approach painting water. I'll be demonstrating two different water conditions. I've attached the study files, you can use these to both check my work up close and to make your own study. I would also recommend checking out my Pinterest Board with water reference images. Try making studies from different reference images to improve your water painting skills! And if you ever struggle or have questions, please feel free to reach out. I'm here to help!

The next Flo's Fundamentals will be about painting fur!

Flo's Fundamentals: Painting Water

In this 1 hour video I will show you how you can approach painting water in Procreate. I'll start out with some theory, what does water look like and how does it behave? And what do you need to think about when painting it. In the second part of the video I'll do a demonstration and show you how I approach painting water.

Hi Flo, Is there something wrong with your link to the Pinterest Board? It leads to a picture with a Japanese comic. Thanks a lot for the tutorial, though!

Tonya Brooks

Flotastic lesson! I would have never thought to lay down a “fuzzy” layer under the “splash! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Jeanine Battle

How do I find the flotastic brushes regencies at around 8.58

Brenda

Heel mooi.

Simone Ribeiro

This tutorial is amazing! Painting water is so difficult but you make it easy with all your detailed explanations. Thank you very much! As soon as my ipad arrives, I will try this out.

John P Garrett

Thanks, Flo...great class! I've been wanting to paint waves but didn't know where to start. You broke down the process beautifully!

Lianne Robinson

I absolutely love your tutorials and feel inspired to create. Thank you so much 😉

Janice Tanche

Hi Flo - could you explain how to made the blurred edges on your sketching paper, please?

Ashleigh Williamson

Oh my gosh can you PLEASE make a tutorial for the main image you use for this tutorial!! 😍

Art with Flo

The technique is the same as for the other studies. I just started out with the dark colors that you see underneath, so pretty much a gradient from dark blue to the sand colors. And then I slowly built up the details using the same brushes as in the demonstration.

Art with Flo

You can do that by adding a layer mask and then removing the edges with a textured brush set to black (I used the Blocker from the Chalk Brush set)

Hi Flo. Thanks for another great tutorial. The attached study files do not have a practice side...or the gray side to practice....am I missing the file to use to practice along with you?

Art with Flo

You can turn off the painting I made on top in the layer menu. Just turn off the 'By Flo' folder

Janice H.

Hi Flo - I also don’t see the gray side and I can’t find a ‘by Flo’ folder.

Sara Campana

Thank you Flo these videos are fantastic!! I’m going to try even with some other images!

Art with Flo

I've downloaded it to check it, but it really has the folders. Please be sure to open it as a file in the Procreate gallery and not open it as an image, because then it'll flatten everything.

Heidi Bolduc

Thanks....I was not opening it correctly....I’m a newbie here with procreate so it worked perfect opening the file instead of importing it. Thanks Flo

Susan Carpet

I really enjoyed this video, Flo. Thank you for putting it together and sharing with us!

Art with Flo

Thank you so much Susan, I'm happy to hear that :D

Amy Parker

Donna Hut

Wow- that was terrific!
