This is the eighth lesson in the Learn to Sketch series! In this lesson we'll focus on animals. I'll show you how you can approach sketching animals and the different approaches you can use. I'll also show ways to exercise and train your animal sketching skills.

I've added the exercise file I used during the demonstration. Of course you can also grab your own reference images or go plein-air sketching!

Hi, this is great! Do you have anything on how to turn sketches into cute cartoon versions of themselves?

Art with Flo

No I'm sorry, I don't think I have ever created something like that

Anand Monteiro

Flo, you are an awesome teacher! In the animal sketching tutorial, you really provided great insights into: Outside-In vs Inside-Out; I'd always wondered whether there was one "right" method, and you provided the definitive answer. Also, your tips to practice are indispensable - how to self check and how to practice finding shapes in images were particularly illuminating. Your "Art Noveau Fox" will be one of my goto warmups; I found that it is easier for me to sketch "Left to Right", or "Bottom to Top", and I used the Noveau Fox to consciously sketch in my non-preferred direction - actually tracing as you suggested. Finally, I really liked the fact that you showed us how your sketches are sometime "off the mark", and how you detect and correct. Thank you for also providing the extensive practice material! One last "nice to know" question: When you were a beginner, just getting started, how many hours did you practice every day?

Art with Flo

Thank you Anand! I'm so happy you are finding my lessons to be helpful 😊 I have no idea how many hours I practiced when I was younger to be honest, there weren't many distractions back then, so it must've been many hours. I really enjoyed drawing animals from the Lion King as a kid and I devoured books about drawing.

This sketching series is brilliant, I have been waiting for the animals part 💜

Emi

Hi Flo, I just wondered if you have done / or have plans to do a series like this but with colouring/ painting on procreate? This sketching series has really helped but when I try and colour or paint it tends to look ‘blocky’ 💜

Emi

Oh brilliant, thank you so much 💜
