First off, HOLY INTRO. The Nirvana cover, the intensely tragic scenes displayed the way they were, the knowing where Natasha was headed but not really understanding until now how she got there... It hit me straight in the feels and gave me goosebumps all over. I think this may be the best intro to any movie I've seen so far, no exaggeration. This movie was incredible. The entire time I was sitting there, heart wide open, watching Natasha not as the flawless assassin we all know her as, but as a woman grappling with her dark past, her found family, and the legacy she never asked for. What meant the most to me was seeing Natasha finally take center stage in a story that honored her complexities. Her dry wit, raw courage, and vulnerability underneath the smirky smirk. This movie let us see her step into her own power- not just as an Avenger, but as a survivor reclaiming her own narrative. As a true admirer of Natasha since I first saw her, this film gave me so much closure that I didn't know I needed. I loved every second.Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿LINK: https://youtu.be/KH7qMF4BBjYI watched this on Disney Plus

The Dingo

I'll watch late tonight or tomorrow - right now I'm at the movies about to watch...well I won't say who in case you don't know... in Marvel's newest movie: Thunderbolts*!

kaliwali

I saw it got reaaaaaally good reviews! I'm so excited to get to that one! I hope you have a fun night & enjoy it ✨

Russell Rutigliano

If only this had come out before Natasha died it probably would be loved way more by MCU fans but cause it came out after people dismissed it as something you could easily skip and that’s just not true! There is so much here that sets up stuff to come. I loved the intro too! Nirvana is one of my favorite bands and that cover of Smells like Teen Spirit was sooooooo god damn good!

Danny

i love this movie and was surprised it wasn't very highly rated when it came out. i was especially impressed with Scarlett Johansson and how she adjusted the same character she's played so many times before. she goes from the professional she has to be in all the other films to a big sister. she acts exactly like an older sibling might while her younger sister tries to show off and impress her. yet also like a kid with very legitimate reasons to be furious with her "parents". everyone in this weird little fake russian family is so good!

Malcolm Ferguson

I haven't seen this one in a while, but I remember liking it quite a bit. Of course, I really like Natasha as a character, and I was surprised by how much I ended up enjoying the rest of her family in this. I did always think it was a bit of an odd choice to release it after Endgame though...

Richard

You look very elegant Kali, like you should be at a ball or gala or something. Will watch and comment after.

kaliwali

Oh man.. Is that why this one wasn't more heavily talked about??? This movie was SO good. Definitely one of my absolute favorites in the entire MCU so far. Really sad that it was dismissed as a 'meh' because of her death. This added soooo much to her character and the decisions she makes in Endgame mean so much more now as well.

kaliwali

100% agree! This was definitely one of my favorites in the entire MCU so far. I loved Scarlett Johansson in it, and feel the same- She really added so much more depth to Natasha's character throughout the entire movie. And her fake Russian family was everything hahaha. I loved Yelena!

kaliwali

Yeah, going in I didn't really know what to expect from this movie. Was Natasha coming back? Was this in the past? If it's in the past, why is it so important now? But then I watched it, and WOW. This is one of my favorites in the entire MCU so far. Really, really loved it!

Richard

First, Kali that's awesome that the music was super nostalgic for you; music has a unique way of going that. It goes straight to a particular spot in the heart that's hard to define but means so much. That was right in your wheelhouse being a millennial and all. I was very confident you would like this film; not only does it have a female protagonist doing amazing things but one with a sister which I knew you would be able to relate to. I am thrilled that Wanda and Natasha rank so highly for you when it comes to superheroes, they do for me as well since I am all about girl power. Girls rock. One of the specific things I want to pick your brain about with this movie: in previous films, a lot of Natasha's backstory was alluded to and/or shown briefly in clips in previous films. How did what was depicted in this movie match your expectations based on your concept of the "red room", her recruiting and training, etc? Was it wildly different; more or less satisfying? Payoffs of those expectations is a huge part of the experience, for me anyway. Infinity War and Endgame, for example, having huge expectations going in and actually having them exceeded was unreal. For this particular film, I'm reminded again of Natasha's incredible bravery and toughness; no super powers but this small woman has been constantly fighting strong men and supervillains for years. But the scarring on her back from years of battles was visceral, and it stung. No woman should have to live a life of violence like that. Natasha's ability to manipulate men is something that has been there from the beginning and something I think you appreciate, and I love the way she used it in this movie to turn the tables on Drakov. I sound like a broken record but I LOVE your outros, you are such a great communicator we are able to understand everything you were feeling and how you were impacted. And don't get me started on that synopsis you wrote, there are people getting paid a LOT of money to write that will never write something that eloquent and meaningful. Holy . . . That end-credit scene has you intrigued, doesn't it?

FearTheTREMOR

This is such a beautiful movie in the most tragic of ways. It's a story about broken, flawed people coming together and being the family they each need. Natasha is such a flawed character and it's why I love her so much. She's done a lot of bad things. Not all of them are her fault because she hadn't known any other life than being a killer. Clint giving her that chance to be better is what makes their relationship so touching too. They saved each other. The intro was really disturbing but really effective. Human trafficking, being a horror that is sadly real, is just something that boils my blood and breaks my heart for children who become something that they were made to be, not because it's who they actually are. Yelena is such a great addition to the MCU, and Florence Pugh is the truth lol. Red Guardian was also a really cool addition. I like the idea that other countries saw Captain America and they worked on their own version of the Super Soldier Serum. And Red Guardian being a kind of knock off version of Russias poster boy is just really funny, David Harbour makes everything he's in instantly better 😅 I'm very excited for you to check out Loki with a new set of eyes with all the context you now have! It's a VERY interesting watch, which I'm sure you already know, but boy, does it recontextualize the MCU in such a dramatic way. See you then Kali!

Phil Stubblefield

Yay! I'm so excited to watch this, Kali, but I have to wait until after rehearsal tonight... Patience is so hard sometimes! 😉

Lastboyscout73

I knew you would love this movie. First ScarJo (Natasha) is the OG and will always be the OG Black Widow but now that you have met Yelena (Florence Pugh) which is the new version of Black Widow, I think you will be happy. Florence Pugh is an amazing actor and she is so charismatic, magnetic, clever, funny and amazing as Yelena. You couldn't ask for a better person to continue the character in obviously a different version. She's in one word....Amazing. I do love how this movie gave us a great back story and filled the gap between Civil War and Infinity War while also telling a compelling story. Some comic book fans were a bit upset with how they portrayed Taskmaster in the movie because "his" origins are way different but he does have the skill set of mimicking anyone he fights. Personally, I try to look past some of that. The MCU re-writes the comics all the time to fit what story they need to tell cinematically. Not all comics would translate to film. I'm here for your journey but I am a little surprised you're going with Loki first over Falcon and the Winter Soldier but honestly it won't hurt anything. The two stories/shows aren't intertwined. I think you will have way more fun with Loki now that you know the MCU a lot better. Loved your reaction and yes the intro absolute drives home the tone of this movie from the beginning and how tragic these girls were forced to grow up. It gives you a deep understanding of why they are so broken but allows you to see how strong they really are through the story. The cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is so dark and dreading unlike the original and it really sets the mood from the beginning.

Trevor Go

Bring on Hawkeye TV show!

M1 Maz

I've been totally knocked out with allergies today LOL so I really needed these good reaction vibes tonight! This one was so good! I've always loved the action spy / thriller side of the MCU. And you know how high I've always had Black Widow on my top 5, so it was very interesting, and emotional to take that dark look through her past. It took me a little bit of time on first watch to warm up to Alexei and Melina, to embrace them as Natasha's found family. Mostly because of how I saw them as casting her and Yelena away as kids. But the extended conversations with the four of them in the house really brought it home for me. Family really is what you make it, even if it's sometimes under the messiest of circumstances. This movie also makes a rewatch of the MCU focusing on Natasha's character so much more interesting, because as you said, it explains so much. It also makes her death in endgame all the more powerful, because it hit me just now watching this with you, that when she died, she did it finally making her own choice.... Okay, you know I already commented on it, but the intro is soooo good and sets the tone for everything. Especially following the emotional and intense plane escape at the start. To me, so much of what makes music powerful is the context under which you listen to it. And that song, the way it was slowed down to a haunting pace along with the imagery just made it HIT. It was one of those lean forward in your chair moments for me when it first came on. And I'm glad they really extended the opening credits and played the whole song Yelena is so awesome! Especially her dynamic with Natasha. Witty, funny, stubborn... she really is the little sister haha. And reminds me so much of my relationship with my sister. Ultra protective, but also with all the banter LOL

Marty McGee

Yeah this is a really good one. I cringe a little on some of the action scenes. I mean some of the stunts and falls without at least having some super-soldier serum in her were pretty ridiculous. But the heart and the story of family were really great. ScarJo and Florence Pugh had really great chemistry as sisters. Natasha's arc is one of the most interesting of all the Avengers aside from Tony's. It really is a shame we never got this pre-Endgame, because that sacrifice would have hit even harder. I actually like Captain Marvel, but Black Widow was OG. We should've gotten her solo movie before Captain Marvel's. But, all that aside, I still love this movie. I agree with the intro credits scene being incredibly powerful. What hits hardest is you know scenes like that are happening, but they aren't being turned into soldiers. It's a far worse reality.

Lawrence Gibson

Elaine from "Seinfeld" is the female version of Nick Fury. Glad to see her in the MCU! She was great in "Veep" as well!

Lone_Starr

Under rated movie for sure...should watch Hawkeye series to tie this all up.

Giancarlo Gasparin

This movie is so slept on. Simpletons criticized it for lacking stakes because they already knew how Natasha's story ended. But for the rest of us, this movie served as both a much needed look into her backstory, and an elegant passing of the torch to the wildly talented Florence Pugh as our new Black Widow.

Robin Holmes

The fact that you said "vengeance" shows you're a mom. Because that pain hit you so hard. The doofy-dad trope was cute but I can see Nat and her sister hurting while he's oblivious but you also get to see he actually saw them as his daughters.

McShades

There was some upset with Taskmaster, as they did a gender swap for the movie and redid his origin story, given he was a popular villain in the comic books, a lot of fans were not happy with Marvel doing this. Otherwise, it was a good movie.

Richard

Going back through this, a couple of other things stand out to me. One is being reminded of the sickening, horrifying reality that so many girls and women are trafficked in today’s world. Ugh 😔 The other is, it used to NEVER be acceptable to show a man punching a woman on screen. It’s just so shocking and ugly and I never get used to it.

Onno Smits

I friggin' LOVE this movie. It's very high in my overall ranking of MCU movies. It's very sad it wasn't really given a chance due to COVID, being released directly to Disney+ without a theatrical release. Like you mentioned in your blurb, you really need to watch this movie with your heart wide open to get the full emotional impact. Something else that I think people were struggling with in the horrible 2021 COVID-times. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) is such an incredible addition to the MCU. She was amazing in this movie. Able to make you laugh and cry with such ease.

Onno Smits

PSA for anyone reading this comment that's up to date on the MCU: GO SEE THUNDERBOLTS* IN THEATERS! It's an incredible movie, like literally one of the best MCU movies ever, not just since Endgame. I need it to make a billion dollars so that they make more like this!

Onno Smits

If you ever do a re-watch of this movie; It's a lot of fun to try and figure out from which Avengers the Taskmaster (Dreykov's daughter) is copying her moves. You can spot Natasha, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Captain America, Winter Soldier, and more if you keep an eye out for the specific fighting styles she employs.

Cory Stanish

Remember in the first Avengers movie, when Natasha hired a little girl to lure Bruce to her? Bruce said, "Is she a spy too? Do they start that young?" and Natasha says, "I did." Well, now we can see that she wasn't exaggerating! Also, my favorite fun fact about the continuity of this movie is that Natasha is still wearing Yelena's vest when she turns up in Infinity War. I mean, why wouldn't she? It has so many pockets! I think the only thing you may have missed by watching this slightly out of order was the introduction of Valentina (from the after-credits scene). who first appeared in Falcon & The Winter Soldier.

Scott S

Appreciate the recommendation. Did you like the last MCU movie prior to Thunderbolts? Don't want to title for spoilers reasons.

Onno Smits

I really like the main character of that one, but the movie itself was not great in my opinion. It had some good moments, but overall it just felt like they lost their way with it somewhere in production. 🤷‍♂️

The Dingo

This is a bit of a spoiler. Maybe edit it to remove details from things she hasn't seen yet?

MotoDork

Has she not seen Infinity War?? Why is she watching this if she hasn't seen that??

KJ

On the discord MCU thread, I've mentioned more is revealed about the mysterious 'Valentina' in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. But that's all that needs to to be mentioned as of right now.

KJ

There's a lot of influence from the Bourne Identity and Mission Impossible movies in this. I think the bizarre misfit family-non-family parts are much needed levity for what is otherwise an incredibly dark movie. Dreykov isn't super-powered or an alien with ideas of grandeur and supremacy: he's just a man with a psychopathic level of misogyny and megolamania. That he's just a human with that level or power with no level of remorse makes him terrifying. Just an incredibly evil and vile person. Might be worth revisiting the scene between Natasha and Loki in the first Avengers movie: that's where Dreykov's daughter and Natasha's ledger of blood is first mentioned. And I so agree it makes so much sense that Natasha's final act in Endgame was her deep personal need to balance out the debt she felt. Some bad news: a sequel movie or series that deals with finding & freeing the Black Widows around the world is in limbo. I won't say any more on the chance it spoils or tempers expectations of parts of Phase 4 & 5 you're still to see.

Mister Lou

OMG great reaction! I had a blast watching this with you! You said something about Spider-Man and X-Men? can we also throw in Blade and Fantastic Four too? I know I'm greedy and want all things Marvel.. and if that's too big a load to take on, I get it. keep up the good work.

Jake Follain

Great reaction. A couple complaints about this movie but overall, definitely more good things than bad. Fun fact, Taskmaster was a dude in the comics. About watching the non-MCU Marvel movies, I would watch all the old Spidermans & No Way Home before starting with the X-Men movies. It makes the most sense, to avoid confusing these universes. To be clear Spiderman is owned by Sony and X-Men was (until 2019) owned by Fox. Which is why even when the MCU was in full swing they were kind of rival franchises. For a little backstory, Marvel sold the rights to some of their characters in the 90's because they were going through a rough time financially, that's why other studios have some of their characters. Disney bought out Fox in 2019 so now they have the rights to the X-Men back. Only reason there was an MCU Spiderman was because Sony agreed on a deal to allow Disney to use him. Some people will mention other pre-MCU "legacy" Marvel movies from the late 90's and early 2000's like Blade, Daredevil and Fantastic Four. That would be a good idea. You'll also meet the MCU Daredevil, in time, I would suggest at least starting his TV series before No Way Home, though not mandatory. Don't have super high expectations with some of the old legacy Marvel movies, while some have aged well others haven't as much, but are still fun. It will all make sense eventually.

Phil Stubblefield

Fantastic reaction as always, Kali! It took a little longer to make time to watch it...I've often thought of the Guardians of the Galaxy and AntMan movies as the emotional "heart" of the MCU, but after this rewatch I'd definitely have to add Black Widow. The feels! It's funny how ScarJo's image has morphed over the years. If I had met her 10 or 15 years ago, I would have thought, "Wow! What a beautiful woman!" Now I just want to run up and give her a big hug and say "Thank you for your sacrifice!" Also, one of the things I love about many MCU storylines is that the villains are *not* one-dimensional. For example, Thanos is a horrible enemy, but you can at least understand the logic behind his viewpoint even if you disagree with its morality. In contrast, General Dreykov is *pure* evil! There is nothing redeeming about his character, and we want nothing more than to see him DIE!!! BTW, your line about "Walmart Captain America" made me laugh out loud!

Aldo Gonzales

Cory, KJ, please edit your comments immediately and stop spoiling.

Lastboyscout73

The introduction to her is fine in Black Widow, it spoils nothing from the series imo.

kaliwali

I thought I recognized her!

Javo Vargas

Wonderful reaction. I loved watching the movie again with you and seeing your reactions. I think it's a good movie. Important information: You need to watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Onno Smits

Just rewatched this for the first time since you posted it over a year ago. Wow, what a great reaction this was! I hope you've had a chance to rewatch this on your own some time, because this one clearly resonated with you.
