Wow. This first look into Season 1 absolutely scrambled my brain. I'm still trying to piece together exactly how I feel, because it dropped me right into thick of it without any real explanations! The moral complexities, the tensions, and the blend of sci-fi with raw human emotion already has me hooked. It feels almost like there is this heavy weight hanging in the air, like every choice matters, and I can already tell I'm going to get way too attached. I leave this first episode with so many questions, and I love that. See you in the next one! Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿LINK: https://youtu.be/nNd990uczJQI watched this on Amazon Prime (but will be switching to Blu-Ray DVD's next time!)

Man that’s a nice job by my part to have just randomly checked the Patreon and I refresh the page and this shows up. I love the tension throughout this entire episode and you feel the weight of them not having slept much for 72+ hours and counting. I still can’t believe Jamie Bamber (Apollo) is British and not American. You literally can’t tell he’s hiding an accent and this was the first time he had ever hid his accent.

Lastboyscout73

Just an interesting tidbit, they used Frak to be able to say the "bad" word and get around the network censors.

kaliwali

WHAT now that I know Apollo is british, I'll be looking out for that masked accent lol. It always amazes me how well some of these actors can pull off different accents. Absolutely wild! This first episode was SO intense. I love all the mystery and intensity they brought into literally everything. I can't wait to dive into Episode 2 now! I'll probably start 2 episodes a week once The Last of Us finishes up btw.

kaliwali

Haha I love that! AND my new shirt!! Thank you, John!

Dude Longcouch

What kinda TV show would do that? They must have been out of their gorram minds!

KJ

This first season has some of the best writing of any TV show out there. You're in for a treat.

Russell Rutigliano

Cool! I was wondering if you were ever gonna do two episodes a week. That will help make it go a little bit faster. It’s great you can watch the extended episodes now and also all the webisodes that came out which two are very important one during season 3 and the other during season 4.

SultanOfSwing

2 episodes a week would be amazing!!

You hit it right with the weight of the decisions on the show and you feel it while watching. Every decision is not only life and death for the character or live and death for their crew, it is about the fate of humanity! Further, the writers and actors have done such a great job of making these characters feel real, which means they are flawed. Even though many of them may be great leaders, soldiers, engineers, or scientists, they are not perfect, some are far from perfect, and some may even be unknown undercover robots. Following a story where any wrong decision could lead to extinction and wrong decisions by flawed charecters feel inevitible is captivating. Also the treatment of religion on this show is fascinating to me. We have two sides which are both motivated by their religious beliefs, one polytheistic and the other monotheistic. Yet the show gave the genocidal robots a religion similar to that matching the beliefs or at least background of the target viewing population. It is such an interesting decision and can be a little unsettling. Can't wait to continue your reactions and I do hope a streaming service picks it up.

Russell Rutigliano

I was gonna suggest certain episodes be watched back to back. For example in season 1 the season finale Kobol’s Last Gleaming Part I and Part II should be watched B2B.

To your comment on the memorial hallway with all the pictures being a lot, beyond the 9/11 memorial vibe it was intended to convey, its also a tiny drop in the bucket of all the people when you think about it. While they haven't provided the population of the Twelve Colonies, even just using our planet as a surrogate for all 12 means billions of people have died. 50k is just 0.00063% of Earth's population. And I'd think the combined population of the Twelve Colonies, given their tech and multiple developed planets, is probably multiples of Earth's. Its loss on a scale we can't even comprehend...

Phil Stubblefield

Despite the fact that I'm a SciFi nerd, I'm one of the people who has never watched BSG. (Despite having met the casting director of the original series and listened to stories about Cylons...) Not only do I finally get to watch it, but I get to share the experience with you, Kali! 😁

M1 Maz

Considering how this picked up literally right after the end of the mini-series, I feel bad for anyone who skipped it and just started with season 1 haha. So much intensity right away! And the stakes are soooo high since everything is always on the line. There's no home planet to go back to. Absolutely loving the characters too. Just off the mini-series and episode 1, we're already seeing how much depth each character has with their strengths, weaknesses, and beliefs, and I know that's going to make for an amazing series! I was able to finish season 1 last night, right on time before Prime takes it down. And worst case if another service doesn't pick it up right away, my DVDs should be coming this weekend, so I'm very excited to continue watching into season 2! Also, I had never noticed this until now because Prime skips the credits so quickly, but did I just see the name of Bear McCreary? Like.... THE Bear McCreary?? No wonder the music in this show is so good!! Also, have to say that the 2000's era CGI / Animatronics makes the metal Cylons look sooooo much more creepy and unsettling than if it was a modern show LOL

Chris

lets goooooo!

Kali, not that you don't have enough to keep track of, I mentioned that the actor who plays Apollo was British irl and was in the BoB in Discord. You mainly see him in Episode 7 "The Breaking Point" during the attack on Foy. He was the Lt. leading 1st platoon that was ordered to go around the back and attack from the rear by Lt. Dike (the bad C.O.). BTW, a lot of actors in the BoB were British irl, including Damien Lewis who played Major Dick Winters. The British are so much better at copying the American accent than we are copying their accent in most cases.

Andrew Roach

I am concerned with reacting to anything on dvd/bluray as there is always the remote possibility of differences between that and streaming and I believe the vast majority of us do streaming and, well, ummmm... blu ray is dead if not mostly there.

Cory Stanish

Shortly after Galactica ended, Jamie Bamber guest-starred on an episode of Dollhouse, where he used his natural accent. I remember how many people were on the message boards at the time complaining about how terrible his "fake" British accent was! LOL

Cory Stanish

I remember how hard that memorial wall hit when the episode first aired, so soon after 9/11.

Nihildum

I'm not sure if this has been covered yet, but a 'model' of Cylon is like a model of car. A Honda Civic is a model of car, destroying a single example of a Civic does almost nothing to the totality of the model of which there are many examples. Sorry if this comment is unnecessary, I may have misunderstood you. Very much looking forward to watching through this show again.

Cory Stanish

This was a hell of a first episode. I knew I was going to enjoy the show after the miniseries, but man this episode really stepped it up. I remember after this episode ended and my bestie and I had our first discussion untangling the ethics of what happened in a Galactica episode; that they'd fire on a civilian ship based on what little information they had is such a difficult thing to grapple with. It's easy to feel it was justified after the fact when they turned out to be right, but... yikes that is, as Chidi Anagonye would say, "a disgusting bowl of ethical soup." And that ending, with the baby boy being born to increase the head count for once... it's just incredible how this show can really make you feel their desperation so much that such a small thing makes you feel like weeping for joy. You really see the importance to clinging to any shred of hope you can find.

Phil Stubblefield

Holy cow! I have to admit that I thought the miniseries was good but not great. But this first episode?!? First, the utter exhaustion of the crew; I felt drained just watching them. Next, the drama and *terror* regarding the Olympic Carrier: did they do the right thing? Were there any humans on board? Then, the bizarre appearance of Cylon Boomer with Helo; they're obviously playing with his mind, but what is their end game? Finally, what is with Number Six's continual references to God? As someone who does believe in God, I find it fascinating that a SciFi show is elevating theology as a central theme of this series. Wow! Color me intrigued... 😲

Dude Longcouch

Pretty decent first episode. The 33 minute thing was very fascinating to me... that's gotta be important for some reason, and I expect it to come up again later. The "no sleep" aspect was particularly interesting to me because I'm someone who has dealt with severe insomnia due to chronic pain before. At its worst, I was awake for 7 days straight with no sleep. I thought the portrayal of that here was pretty good for the most part, it showed the physical and mental toll, the lack of focus, the increase in mistakes, the melancholy of not actually knowing what you've been doing - just floating from moment to moment with no connective tissue. The only criticism I'd make is they should have included a few hallucinations. When you don't sleep for days at a time, you start seeing things. You become unsure of what's real and what's not. I saw things out of the corner of my eyes that weren't there. It was usually something small, like a cat darting around the room. But a few times I even saw people, and I'd turn to look at them and then they'd be gone. But maybe they didn't want to go too deeply into that because they're already playing that angle with the Cylons themselves, and they didn't want to add another layer on top of it. Or, in universe, maybe the Cylons calculated the 33 minute gap as the perfect interval to ensure minimum human sleep effectiveness, as a way to further obscure and conceal the Cylons that have infiltrated the humans? I could definitely see that being a thing. Very excited to see where it all goes!

M1 Maz

There's unfortunately no choice since the show is no longer available on streaming services in the US. And it doesn't make sense to buy it digitally off Prime at $35 *per season* when the DVD set exists with everything plus the movies. I wouldn't worry too much, it'll be fine

Joe

Gotta like this for the Good Place reference alone. And you are so right about the palpable feeling of desperation.

Russell Rutigliano

Well at the moment we all don’t have a choice. It’s either we get it on Blu-Ray for $55 bucks or spend $35 bucks per season on Amazon till it shows back up on a streaming service and that’s a lot of money! That’s $140+ dollars!!! Or you can just spend $55 bucks and have it forever. The Blu-Ray also has an advantage in the fact Kali can now watch the extended episodes of certain eps like Pegasus for example. You can’t watch the extended episodes on streaming services.

Russell Rutigliano

Yes you did! Bear McCreary took over for Richard Gibbs when the season started cause Gibbs couldn’t commit to the series so Bear ended up becoming the sole composer. He had helped Gibbs during the Mini-Series. His music makes this show 100x times better!!

Andrew Roach

First sorry, I had a brain freeze and was thinking in terms of movies where you could rent it all for $5, ops. However I do indeed hope she does NOT watch extended episodes on BluRay as that would mess up those watching using streaming.

Russell Rutigliano

The one episode I mentioned Pegasus is the ONLY episode I would say is important to watch the extended version cause it gives crucial context! The others are not really necessary but Pegasus imo def is.

Tim C

At the moment, there's no streaming to mess up. Unless you're in a country where it remains available, it's going to be BluRay or nothing for the time being. But honestly, if there was ever a show where the physical media was preferable, BSG is it. The Complete BluRay set is exceptional, as it comes with every broadcast episode, every extended episode, every mini-series and every movie. Some of those have never been available for streaming.

Joe

I am a little afraid of buying the Blu-ray and then some streaming service announces they pick it up. So I may give it a few weeks just to be sure.

kaliwali

I honestly think that's what I love the most about this show so far. How REAL the characters feel because of their faults and imperfections. And the possibility that any of them could be sleeper Cylons!? This is gonna be an absolutely wild ride I can already tell. And I'm 1000% here for it :) I really hope a streaming service picks it up too.. Go figure, I start the first episode of the first season and Amazon gets rid of it! I'll be watching on DVD from now on, but I know a lot of you (including myself, honestly) only use streaming. So fingers crossed it ends up somewhere else soon!

kaliwali

Someone mentioned to me in the Miniseries comments that this show was very shortly after 9/11. That stuck in my mind since then and I can't help but see all the parallels and how real the shock feels through the actors, because it probably was. That memorial wall definitely hit me in the heart knowing that as well..

kaliwali

I'm soooo glad to hear you loved this first look as much as I did! I think all of my time in Star Citizen and space sand-box games had me hooked at the Miniseries haha.. But this first episode just completely sealed my excitement for the mystery and complexities in this show! The references to God are also leaving me very intrigued!! I left this episode with SO many questions and thoughts to think deeper on.. I can't wait for the next episode already! And I'm really glad to hear this episode really got you into the journey, too :)

kaliwali

Same thoughts! What if I didn't know better and just picked this up from Season 1 Episode 1? If I didn't have you all, I most likely would have 😅👀 It would have been a completely different vibe. Still intense, but the character development they did in the Miniseries made everything feel so much more insane and real. I feel bad for those poor souls haha And wait a second, wait a second.... Bear McCreary!? No wonder!!! That tribal, melodic, calming vibe that also makes you feel like your soul has been inspired. Yep, that makes total sense now!! Good catch, I totally missed that! I guess we are both moving to DVDs here soon!! I got the USB player you sent over and I'm extremely thankful for your forward thinking and awesome gift!! I'll be using that from now on!

kaliwali

That's insane that Damien Lewis was also British! I never would have guessed. And now that you mention Apollo again, I totally remember us having this conversation back in Discord! I always think it's so awesome how good actors are at copying accents. But I think you're right about British being waaaay better at copying American accents, because I can never tell!

kaliwali

Totally valid concern! I'm fingers crossed all this week that a streaming service picks it up sometime before I record Episode 2. But if not, I'll have to resort in Blu-Ray! It's super unfortunate, but no real way I can work around it right now. I heard that Blu-Ray is awesome for BSG tho and hopefully it doesn't pose an issue for anyone syncing up with streaming services! I'll be sure to include as many "sync copy points" as I can in each video just in case!

kaliwali

Information like this helps me keep everything straight, so I seriously appreciate it! After this first episode, I'm already hooked lol. Can't wait for Episode 2! Once I finish up The Last of Us, I'll bump it up to 2 episode per week of BSG :)

kaliwali

Yes! This episode seriously cranks everything up a whole notch from the miniseries. Which I didn't expect for the very first episode lol. The civilian ship moment hit hard. I was just sitting there wondering, what would I have done?? And those brutal ethical knots make this show SO good. I loved your Chidi reference too because wow, this episode really is a moral minefield. It's totally that sliver of hope that you cling to. And this show really knows exactly when to throw it at you! I can't wait for the next one and this entire season :)

kaliwali

You know me, I also cling onto numerology significances lol. It HAS to mean something, for sure. Why 33? Seven days with no sleep is unimaginable. I've only ever gone like 2? I feel like they really captured that disoriented, fraying-at-the-edges feeling you get. And you might be right about the writers avoiding too much overlap with the Cylon mind games. There are definitely plenty of those already! But still, it adds a lot of depth to consider how that gap would psychologically grind people down. Thanks for sharing your experience! Very excited to see more of this!!

Fanchman

I think someone alluded to it already, but when referring to Cylon models, the blonde Cylon is model #6. She said that right before Baltar's house was destroyed in the miniseries. Sharon, is another model. Same with the arms dealer that Commander Adama killed on the munitions station and finally the journalist Baltar accused of being a Cylon. Those are 4 models of the 12. You will learn their model numbers eventually. At this point, we don't really know how many copies there are of each model.

kaliwali

Yes, I was a bit confused on the model numbers vs how many actual copies there are! From the Miniseries, I took away that there are 12 models (copies) only, but now it makes a lot more sense that there are possibly infinite copies but 12 different models! Thank you for helping me understand that better. Honestly makes it even more insane to think about now!

Marty McGee

It's a very tiny moment, but the very end when Roslin writes the new number and turns around and almost breaks down is one of my favorite moments in the show. Hits me in the feels every time. It's hard to believe that 2 years passed between the airing of the mini series and this episode. It's pretty seamless. The only thing you have to infer is there had to be some time between their first escape and when the Cylons started following them and attacking every 33 minutes. As for Helo, his character was originally not going to appear in the series. But he was such a fan favorite of the miniseries they wrote a whole story line for him to come back. Love that this first episode hits you with a really hard moral decision. It sets the tone that this series isn't going to shy away from that stuff.

Alex

I immediately caught the 237 jumps as a reference to Room 237 from The Shining.
