(📌 Be sure to check out my message down below in this description box before watching along with me! Thanks!)This movie was incredible! Up until now, my only 'courtroom drama experience' was binge-watching random Judge Judy clips on YouTube back in college. So, diving into A Few Good Men felt like a whole new world to me. I think I might actually be hooked on courtroom dramas now lolThe characters were all so layered. Watching Kaffee grow from a cocky young lawyer who treated everything like a game into someone willing to face the toughest questions head-on was so satisfying. And then there's Col. Jessup. Jack Nicholson felt like this force of nature that left hurricanes in his wake. Every scene felt like a storm gathering strength, and when it all finally broke and the truth came crashing out, it was actually electric! This story makes you wrestle with questions about loyalty, truth, and the line between following orders and doing what's right. And even though it's set in the military, those questions started to feel universally human. Feeling the weight of justice crash down like that left me feeling like I'd just ridden an emotional ethical rollercoaster. I'll take your courtroom drama recommendations now, please and thank you! 😅🍿Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿LINK: https://youtu.be/EofjaHoEg54I watched this on YouTube TV (A very grave mistake and I'll never do this again lol)📌 I watched this on YouTube TV and I didn't realize there would be small moments where the screen goes blank for 'Ad Breaks' sigh lol. Unfortunately by the time I started watching, it was too late to turn back since this is a 'blind reaction'. I won't use YouTube TV in the future and learned my lesson! Well, it looks like my after-dinner plans have just been revised... 😁 Sorry that the YouTube TV experiment was a disaster, Kali, but thanks for taking care of us as always. I shall delete the file promptly upon completion of the reaction! 👍🏻 Also, I love your description: "Jack Nicholson felt like this force of nature that left hurricanes in his wake." So poetic, and so accurate! That's one of the reasons I voted for The Shining in your spooky movie poll. His performance in that film is iconic! Edit: I'm looking forward to seeing whether you recognized the famous quote when it was delivered, as was discussed in the comments on the poll...

Wil Castillo

Courtroom Drama Recommendation: The Exorcism of Emily Rose I have a lot of recommendations, but I'll only recommend this one because it's a good movie and Halloween is coming up. And don't forget, you also saw Gifted and Liar Liar. 🙂

Robert da Spruce

Yeah, even some of your full length reactions on YouTube sometimes has ad breaks. Not sure why. I think it’s on my end. But has only happened a couple times. So nothing to be too concerned about That aside. If you like courtroom dramas, the next logical choice is My Cousin Vinny 😊 (totally different vibe though)

Jeremy Pierce

I was watching the copy that I bought on vudu and it looks like a couple of scenes in the beginning are shortened

Steve Mercier

Going to watch this tomorrow when I get home from work...absolutely spectacular movie.

TheGuy

Can't wait to check this one out. First that come to mind as far as courtroom dramas are A Time to Kill (my favorite of these), The Rainmaker, Erin Brockovich, My Cousin Vinny (a bit more comedy than drama, but I think it still qualifies) and 12 Angry Men (1957).

Steve Mercier

Oh...and favorite court room drama is The Verdict, with Paul Newman.

rubberkidney

secret Christopher guest cameo. playing a rare serious character. buddies with the director.

Richard

Glad you enjoyed this one! I like how this movie peels back the sometimes clandestine nature of the events that go along with and inside military enlistment. The often-confusing conflict of who to be loyal to, God or Country or Fellow Soldier or Commanding Officer. Just very well done. I'm guessing you will empathize with those two naive young soldiers caught up in the middle and looking forward to your reaction. There are some amazing courtroom dramas in your future it would seem! I'll recommend some later. The guy playing Jessup, Jack Nicholson, is an actor with an incredible background who has won a lot of Best Actor awards. One reason I bring this up is that he is the Joker in the Batman movie from 1989, which along with the 2 Superman movies from 1978 and 1980 are the first true “modern” superhero movies. I know your insiders have recommended the Nolan Dark Knight trilogy but I’m not sure if this first Batman is on your radar. I think you’ve also gotten some recommends for As Good as it Gets where both he and his co-star won best actor/actress. Dang my Aliens comment was loooooong, sorry about that haha I kind of got carried away. I'll try to rein it in next time for the sake of your mental health :D

Jay Robert

I seem to have to pause you every few minutes to let my copy catch up. Weird.

Mark Messer

Minority Report and War of the Worlds are two great Cruise films! Also both directed by Spielberg and music by John Williams! :)

Chris

Were you able to handle the truth? Courtroom/Legal Drama Recs! 12 Angry Men (1957) A Time to Kill (1996) Erin Brockovich (2000)

Chris

Lawyer here. The courtroom drama that actually was discussed at law school, believe it or not, is My Cousin Vinny. A comedy, but they do a very good job with the courtroom scenes. It'd be my top pick. Twelve Angry Men is also an all-time classic, also adapted from a stage play (more a jury drama than courtroom, but still). A bit dated... but also timeless, if you know what I mean. I wouldn't have it in quite the same league, but Primal Fear is also an excellent courtroom drama, and I bring it up because you just had it in your poll. If you say legal dramas rather than pure courtroom... Michael Clayton is one of my all-time favorite films. Before Tony Gilroy did Andor, Michael Clayton was his best work (and this from a guy who also wrote the Bourne films). Clooney's best role too. Separately... whenever I die in a video game I still say "I strenuously object." It's about as useful for me as it was for Jo. Edit: if you haven't seen The Social Network... it's not a courtroom drama, but a whole lot of it takes place in depositions. It's also my vote for best film post-2000 (and it was written by Aaron Sorkin, same as A Few Good Men).

Chris

Would fully support Best in Show (or one of the others, but mostly Best in Show) making it on here.

Chris

Yeah something funky. The beginning scene with santiago is much shorter on her reaction than on my movie too. I guess they're doing some sort of "time tailoring"

rubberkidney

waiting for guffman best Christopher guest movie

Chris

The thing is, there's no wrong answer--it's just whichever is your favorite. They're just all so good.

The Dingo

And now you see why I love this movie! Here are three more courtroom drama's you might like: A Time to Kill The Judge My Cousin Vinny (this one is a drama/comedy - but it's damn good too!)

Joe

When I left the military to go to law school, the people at my base tried to get me to join the JAG because they didn't like that their current JAG lawyers "keep going on and on about people's rights." I politely told them that I probably was not their guy. I always find the intersection of military and law very interesting. This movie is the perfect illustration of how individual rights might conflict with the overall mission, but also why those rights are most important to acknowledge in environments where they are difficult to uphold. My favorite legal movies: 12 Angry Men. My Cousin Vinny. A Time to Kill. Erin Brockovich. When you are ready to return to Tom Cruise: Nothing more Tom Cruise than the Top Gun Movies. Plus, Minority Report is another personal favorite.

MattN

great react! I love this movie too. Some other good court movies, My Cousin Vinny - one of my comfort movies, so funny & very smart, The Rainmaker - may be my fav legal movie ever, Lincoln Lawyer - a very fun legal thriller

Chris

Speaking of rights conflicting with mission... you have any insight on the whole Kaffee potentially getting in trouble for accusing Jessup? How strict that all is? It's such a key part of the film, but I've always wondered about it, because clearly it's an issue particular to the military.

Paul T

Great reaction as always! I have done the same thing in reverse that you did with YouTube TV. Same result basically. Your comment about a hurricane being the result after Jessup has done his thing was very good!!! There were some comments you made during your reaction that I loved hug can't remember now 🤦‍♂️ lol

Joe

I wasn't a military lawyer, so I don't have personal legal knowledge. But having served, chain of command is a concept that is engrained in all aspects. I think an unsuccessful accusation of someone that high up the chain could end his legal career, in the military at least. And if done without proper justification a dishonorable discharge could be possible, which might even impact his license. Just speculation though.

PrincessLayup

I'm exited for you to get to Daredevil because there is some amazing court room stuff in there

Robert da Spruce

Wonderful reaction Kali! But a nightmare to sync. Looks like the version you watched (I watched on Amazon) and my version were edited differently. I think your YouTube version was made to run in a certain timeframe because my copy would go out of sync every 10-15 seconds. And I would have to pause and unpause your reaction to let my copy catch up every couple of minutes. That being said. I did enjoy your reaction. I could tell you were really getting into it. The gears were definitely turning! As I said in my other post. My Cousin Vinny is also a very popular courtroom movie. Although the tone is completely different As far as Tommy goes. Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick

KJ

Primal Fear is a courtroom drama too :) - Lincoln (2012) - A Time to Kill (1996) - The Rain maker (1997) - Fracture (2007) - Philadelphia (1993) - Amistad (1997) - The Client (1994) - The Hurricane (1999) - A Civil Action (1998) - The Insider (1999) - And Justice For All (1979)

KJ

Sometimes digital copies don't run at the same fps depending on the region, or sometimes digital verses optical Media. It's probably an issue with Amazon video versus almost everyone else lol

KJ

Probably an Amazon video issue

RP

Ya this was unsyncable for me, YT really squished the time so it always got ahead of my digital copy, but I made it work cause I knew you’d do a great reaction for this one. May I recommend… JFK Magnolia Though very different, both are massively dense movies with huge all star casts, and a drinking from a firehouse feel. Magnolia is a vibe and has Tom Cruise with an Oscar nominated performance unlike anything else he’s done. JFK is cinematic brilliance throughout, even if including many debated facts and conclusions. And the last hour is all courtroom drama. Hope you catch them both sooner or later. 🍻

Phil Stubblefield

Wow, Kali! A fantastic reaction to a fantastic film! The final fifteen minutes comprise one of the most intense, best acted scenes you'll ever see. "You want answers?" "I want the truth!" "You can't handle the truth!" Kali, one of the many things that makes you an excellent reactor is your expressive face. And after that interchange, you looked absolutely stunned! In your post for "This Week's Watchlist", I commented: A Few Good Men boasts a stellar cast and one of the single most famous movie quotes of all time! I hope you can handle it... 😉" (I have to admit I was pretty proud of sneakily referencing the quote without spoiling it!) You responded: One of the single most famous movie quotes of all time!? Now I'm very curious if I've heard it before 👀 So, did you actually recognize it when you heard it? It's included in many lists of the most famous movie quotes of all time. But I didn't know until just now that Jack Nicholson reportedly ad libbed it! What I also didn't know until just now was that the story was based on a real-life event, although the actual victim recovered and none of the Marines involved were dishonorably discharged. However, the circumstances in the movie were so obviously similar that several of the Marines filed a $10 million lawsuit against Castle Rock Entertainment! Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise rightfully garner the majority of praise for this film, but Wolfgang Bodison's portrayal of Lance Corporal Harold Dawson is also exemplary. His speech about being willing to accept the consequences of his actions — "What do we do then, sir?" — brought us both to tears! Yet another thing I just learned was that he had never acted before! He had been director Rob Reiner's personal assistant for some time, and when Reiner had difficulty casting the role of Dawson, he asked Bodison to read for it. The rest is history. A few notes: * IANAL, but, yes, there are rules for the information that must be disclosed between the prosecution and the defense in a criminal trial. * I think Markinson took his life because he was ashamed in general for what he had done as a counter-intelligence officer and specifically for what he didn't do to stand up for Santiago against Jessep. * As you said, Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Col. Nathan Jessep is incredibly intimidating. IRL, high school Phil dated a young lady who lived down the street, and my friend Kurt dated her sister. Their father actually was a colonel (in the Air Force, not the Marines), and although he couldn't have been nicer to us, he was incredibly intimidating! 🫨 I'm glad you've discovered this genre, Kali! I sense a courtroom drama poll in our future...

RP

You asked why Kaffee would tell Jack about Markinson. As it is in criminal trials, it is required by law for either side to disclose new evidence immediately if planned to be used in court. I think a foundational rule if a fair system is to be aspired to. 🍻

McShades

Some of these might have already been mentioned but here's my Lawyer Movie list: The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) Erin Brockovich (2000) Legally Blonde (2001), comedy I thought you might enjoy A Time to Kill (1996) The Client (1994) The Firm (1993) Another Tom Cruise movie The Pelican Brief (1993) Runaway Jury (2003) The Rainmaker (1997) Primal Fear (1996)

.

People who think think Tom Cruise is just an action star need to think again he's a seriously amazing actor as well and im sure he will win an oscar one day hopefully for his movie next year when he returns to drama. Also I hope we will be continuing the journey into Jack Nicholson's filmography come spooky season with the shining

SavageDiplomat

This censored version of the film is absolutely atrocious. Alters some of the originally excellent dialogue and scenes in ways that take away from the movie. I dont think ive ever scene this version before. Definitely the edited for day time tv version. I would recommend anyone that watches this reaction to use the google drive link and download the version of the film she watched otherwise its quite unwatchable sadly.

Simon

I think you would really enjoy Erin Brockovich.

Simon

The version you watched was either censored or cut down in some way which is a shame as I was looking forward to watching it.

kaliwali

Hey Simon! In the description box here I left my version that I watched so it can sync perfectly for you if you're interested in viewing that way! I made a mistake and trusted YouTube TV's version of this. Which was censored and had "Ad break moments". Unfortunately, I didn't realize this was the case until about 15 minutes into the movie which was too late to turn back for someone doing a 'blind reaction' haha. I won't make this mistake in the future! But, since I already recorded it I did give you guys access to the copy I watched in FULL. Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1deQDDr5P7p_NItrx9obenlIiDaJ0jERd/view?usp=sharing My apologies!

kaliwali

I'm so sorry it happened this way! Since it's a blind reaction, by the time I realized it was definitely too late to turn back. Fortunately, it's pretty easy to view the movie I watched with the Google link or they can download it. Etiher way works. So sorry and this won't happen in the future :)

kaliwali

I was so surprised by Jack Nicholson's performance in this! And I totally agree with what you said about Tom Cruise. I know there was quite a bit of 'action' in The Last Samurai and Edge of Tomorrow, but all the films I've seen with him have been phenomenal. His range is crazy!

kaliwali

I had no idea! Thank you for this info! I'm kind of excited to eventually deep dive into more law/courtroom films. I guess I should brush up on some terminology first tho haha

Simon

No need to apologise! I saw the Google Drive link but I dont think I can bring myself to watch a cut down version of one of my fav films lol! I'll just wait for your YT edit of the reaction. Really glad you enjoyed it.

kaliwali

I'm so sorry about the version I watched! I trusted YouTube TV for the first time and I'll never make that mistake again. We just started paying for YouTube TV to watch more football, but I won't even try to use this service again for a reaction :( Sadly, I didn't realize it would be an issue until I was watching along and already 20 minutes into the reaction. Which, being a blind reaction, I obviously couldn't just go back and retry haha I left my copy here for you all if you want to watch without the syncing headache: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1deQDDr5P7p_NItrx9obenlIiDaJ0jERd/view?usp=sharing

kaliwali

I will neeeever trust YouTube TV again haha. I didn't realize it would be this way until it was too late to turn back lol. I'm glad you enjoyed my reaction and summary tho! This movie was SO good

kaliwali

Thank you for the recommends!

kaliwali

Ahh that's such a fascinating perspective! Hearing it from someone who's actually seen military/law overlap must have made this movie very interesting to watch. You're very right about how this movie really illustrated how individual rights almost shine brighter when they're being tested in places that want to dim them. And thank you for the recommends!

kaliwali

Thank you for the recommends!

kaliwali

I'm so sorry! It's the version I ended up watching (which I'll never choose YouTube TV to watch a reaction again) I'll always either pay for the whole movie through Amazon or use the normal streaming platforms. It's my fault, I'm sorry! I did leave you all a copy of the version I watched tho for this exact reason. To watch without having issues please use this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1deQDDr5P7p_NItrx9obenlIiDaJ0jERd/view?usp=sharing

KJ

Some of these might arguably more legal dramas than courtroom dramas but I feel fall under the same bracket. Others have mentioned Erin Brockovich too which is excellent.

kaliwali

This movie really does peel back those hidden layers of loyalty and conflict in a genius way. I feel like I also learned a lot about Marines and military lawyers that I never knew or even thought about before so it was very cool to see that side of things for a change! Thank you for the Nicholson notes! I can't wait to see more of him in the future. I've heard of him and seen clips of him. But this role was a first for me! Can't wait to keep exploring those courtroom dramas in the future now! And no worries! I read everyone's comments, but I might not have time to reply to every aspect of them lol. There's only so much time in the day but just know I do read them all the way through even if I don't reply to everything!

kaliwali

Ahh awesome to hear a lawyer's perspective on some films that focus on the topic! I see a few other comments suggesting My Cousin Vinny so I'll definitely throw that one on the top of my new 'courtroom drama' list. I see a lot of people also rooting for Primal Fear which is funnily enough on my "spooky vibes" poll this week haha. I'll have to get into that one if it doesn't win the poll this time around for when I get back into courtroom dramas! Thank you so much for the recommends! And that's hilarious about your "I strenuously object" game over line hahaha

Robert da Spruce

No need to apologize. Stuff happens sometimes It didn’t keep me from enjoying your reaction though! Looks like the version you watched was originally for the Sundance channel (judging by the watermark) And had been edited down from the original theatrical runtime of 130+ minutes to fit into a two hour window. By shaving of a second here. A second there, throughout the film Thx for giving us a heads up ahead of time. If not, I would have been wondering WTF was going on the entire movie 😂

kaliwali

I feel like Gifted and Liar Liar were a bit courtroomy looking back, but nothing like what this movie was all about! I really enjoyed it being the main focus and learning more about Marines and Military law through it! But yes, you're definitely correct haha

kaliwali

I'm so sorry for the syncing issues with this one! It was on my end because I decided to trust YouTube TV for the first time and it made it a whole mess. I did give you all my copy because I felt like this was definitely going to be an issue.. I'm so sorry for the mixup and I'll never trust that platform for a reaction again! You can use this without any syncing issues: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1deQDDr5P7p_NItrx9obenlIiDaJ0jERd/view?usp=sharing

SavageDiplomat

You didnt know so there's nothing you could do about it Putting up the google drive link was the best thing you could do to make it watchable so im sure the patrons appreciate the effort you put in. Its just a shame you didnt get to experience the film at its absolute best.

Amper Sand

No need to apologise, it's not your fault - but I totally agree with SavageDiplomat it's "atrocious", lol

Joshua s. Jackson

Please watch the 1986 movie "Legend " starring Tom Cruise.

kaliwali

There will be no sync issues with the downloaded version as it is my exact copy that I watched. But it is censored for TV so instead of dropping the F bomb every other scene, there is less of that. Which (you know me) I didn't mind lol. But to each their own! Won't make the same mistake twice with YouTube TV and perfectly okay to just skip this one if that's your decision! I'm not going to lie, it does make me sad as I put a lot of time and thought into this one! But it's my mistake. I'm sorry.

kaliwali

It's crazy to say, but that was my first time ever hearing the "You Can't Handle The TRUTH!" line 😱🤯 It was soooo perfectly delivered and that entire scene was so well acted. I was on the edge of my seat and sweating the whole time hahaha. I'm kind of glad I've never seen a meme or clip of that scene before because it really was SO good. I'm glad you enjoyed my reaction to it!!

kaliwali

ooo I'll add it to my list!

Phil Stubblefield

Wow, it amazes me that the quote had never been spoiled for you! I'm *so* glad you were able to enjoy it. 😊

DirtySteve

Runaway Jury (2003) The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) A Time to Kill (1996)

M1 Maz

It's pretty funny as someone who's a big Tom Cruise fan and who's watched a lot of his movies, that the first three of his films you watched were all new for me LOL. So I've really enjoyed this second round of discovery with you, and seeing more of his acting range! I really loved this one! I wasn't sure what to expect, *especially* when I saw that Cruise was the defense lawyer for the 'murderers' (so we thought). But then it all started to fall in place, seeing what they were fighting for. I love how he evolved into such a sharp and composed lawyer by the end. I feel like he always had those talents hidden away, but was so afraid to pursue them out of fear of failure compared to his father. But he found purpose in this case that brought out his true potential I love courtroom dramas in general. And it's not just the 'who dunnit' problem solving, mystery aspect of it. But the psychology. Not just being about what you say, but when, and how. And as someone who loves getting into people's heads, it's all so fascinating. Following all the twists and turns. Thanks for the great reaction!

McShades

Just finished the movie, and I really enjoyed your reaction, and thanks for making your version of the movie available. IMO the movie had the same impact as the theatrical version, sure the cursing was removed but it was still good.

Eddie

Hi Kali. A very good reaction, as always. There are some very good courtroom thrillers. Here's a short list: - A Time to kill (1996) - The Rainmaker (1997) - Class Action (1991) - Suspect (1987) - To kill a Mockingbird (1962) - Runaway Jury (2004) - 12 angry men (1957) - Presumed Innocent (1990) to name a few :) I hope you check them out in the future. All the best from Germany.

kaliwali

Thank you! Yeah, I think aside from the cussing (which doesn't really do it for me, anyways) there wasn't much of a difference besides the obvious fade to black for ad break inserts lol. I don't need to hear the F bomb to be more moved, so it was fine for me but I get why others might protest this version. I'm glad you still found enjoyment from it regardless! It was an EXCELLENT movie!

Fanchman

I thought it was me at first. I didn't read your comments until I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't stay synced. Thank you for the complimentary copy!

kaliwali

So sorry about the mixup! I hope you still enjoy it even with my language friendly version hehe 🩷

Fanchman

If you intend to watch other courtroom movies, I definitely recommend My Cousin Vinny. Not only is it a great comedy, but it is considered very accurate about courtroom procedures and testimony. I've even heard that some law schools will show the movie to law students. As for following orders, the issue is whether or not it was a lawful order. This was a peacetime order that had nothing to do with combat. They were basically being ordered to assault a fellow Marine, which unfortunately led to his death. In my humble opinion: when Lance Corporal Dawson asked Lt Kaffee "Do you think we were right?", Kaffee should have been honest with him as his lawyer and told him that the order could be considered illegal. I'm still glad they brought down the leadership who gave the order that resulted in a tragic death, but some responsibility has to be taken by the men who carried out that order.

Giancarlo Gasparin

Great reaction! Seeing a lot of really good recommendations in the comments including A Time to Kill, but I didn't even consider how this is going to tie into the Superhero Odyssey. Watching one of our beloved heroes work a courtroom is certainly going to be a treat. Looking forward to it!

McShades

My Mom was very strict about not using foul language in the house, if we did she would smack us across the back of our heads lol. I couldn't even watch R Rated movies until I moved out at 18... We only got to watch them on Airplane flights because they would edit out the bad language. I don't mind other people using it, or watching it in movies, but to this day It's very rare if I use bad language myself because of my mom lol..

Mr. Mike's Multiverse

This is such a good movie. I knew you would love it Kali. In addition to the plethora of courtroom movies already recommended, one that seems fitting with the passing of Robert Redford, is Legal Eagles.

Ricky

🤣 I was so confused with the first lines of Jack Nicholson because I was like I thought he was a bit more foul with his language 😂😂😂

kaliwali

Thank you for the suggestion! I don't believe I've gotten that one yet!

Sean Ellingham

This is a great film (although this censored version is rather watered down). For all their talk of honour, not one of those Gitmo Marines seems to have any - it's honestly more like they're in a cult. I'm not an American, but as I understand from what I've read about US military code, both officers and enlisted personnel are *required* to refuse to follow illegal orders - so everyone who followed Colonel Jessop's order all the way down the chain of command was committing a crime. Seems pretty clear that a large proportion (if not all) of the entire unit deserves to be dishonourably discharged, if not thrown in jail

Mr. Mike's Multiverse

I hadn't seen Legal Eagles in 20+ years and watched it again over the weekend. Not as much took place in the courtroom as I remembered, so maybe not a good choice for a courtroom drama poll, but you would enjoy it if you watched it.

Milton Reduxed

SLEEPERS (1996) is an excellent crime drama/legal courtroom drama with an all star cast

SnakeandNape

Legal Eagle on YouTube does a video on this with an actual JAG lawyer

Nina

Rest in Peace Rob Reiner. The director of this movie and his wife were found dead in their home. Stabbed to death. Apparently their son did it. This is terrible. Rob Reiner also directed wonderful classics like When Harry met Sally, Stand by me, Misery and The Princess Bride. A few good men was my favorite. ❤️

Habman

Loved that movie. Great acting and actors in it.
