From the very first frame of this movie, it felt like we were being stripped from reality and placed into a comic book come to life! Every panel, every movement bursting with color, energy, and heart. I found myself completely swept up into the chaos and beauty of it all but still tugged back to the origins of Spider-Man in such a moving way! The MUSIC was incredible! It didn't just accompany the story, it elevated it. Every beat, every song choice, felt like it was speaking directly to the emotions of each character. You all know my love for music in films and this one... WOW. It made moments of triumph, fear, and joy hit so much harder every time. Miles’ struggles resonated with me in ways I didn’t expect. As a mom to a 6-year-old, I felt that familiar tug of wanting her to never grow up. To never close the door in my face. To never think I’m embarrassing her, or to doubt that I’m guiding her in the right direction. At the same time, watching Miles’ perspective mirrored his father’s struggles in such a beautiful way. I loved seeing him step into his own power while carrying the legacy of Spider-Man! And all the baggage that comes with it. I loved that he found himself amidst chaos and took that leap of faith into the unknown. And the mom in me realized… sometimes I need to take that leap too. This movie reminded me why I love storytelling so much. Because when it's done like this, it doesn't just entertain you. It makes you feel things you didn't know were possible. It opens your eyes and shines a light on the layers beneath the everyday motions of life. It shows the struggles, the growth, and the moments that go unnoticed. I loved this story for helping me see all of that, while still ringing true to the Spider-Man story and why we all love it so much. And the idea that anyone can be Spider-Man? That heroism isn't about age, experience, or perfection? I loved that. I love how this story told us that courage, responsibility, and heart exist in all of us. Because it's so true. Gotta add part 2 to the timeline now! :D

T3RM1NATOR

Yea! I was about to comment asking if she will go straight to the second movie or wait I guess we’ll see soon!

Great Movie, personally not the biggest fan of the sequel to this, but this, man is it good. Kali i really would recommend you read the first storyline of Peter Parker/Spider-Man that got released in the 60s, this pays homage to it in alot of scenes, obviously with Miles instead, but still masterfully done! I thought i loved Spider-Man after just watching the movies, but reading some of his comics I realized I didnt actually know the true brilliance yet…!

TheJoeKerr

Excited to watch this one later. Also can’t recommend enough for you to play the newest Spider-man games that started coming out in 2018. Between this movie and the game coming out within months of each other it was really good times for Spider-man fans

kaliwali

Ooo that's really inspiring to pick up the comics more seriously! I think once I read through the LoTR books this fall, I'll definitely be hopping into more comics and manga. I've always been really interested in it all but never took the leap of faith (haha get it 😅✨)

Kristoffer

😂 But for real, there is just something about books, comics etc. That are just… better? In a way. As you said Lord Of The Rings books are just great, same with Game Of Thrones i thought i loved it, but then i bought the books called “A song of Ice and Fire” (Which btw is just a fantastic name) And my love for it just doubled. I think its probably something to do with, not having to hold back on explaining everything and deep diving into even small characters, where movies and even tv shows has to cut out stuff.

Amazon Prime huh? We go back and forth on these streaming services so much I don't know if I have Prime now lol. I totally relate to how often emotionally charged content or content featuring teens/young adults makes you automatically think of the precious little ones, and I love how you captured that in your write-up. You are obviously an engaged, present, conscientious parent and in the end all you can do is do your best. But I have a gut feeling things are going to go well. I'm probably in the upper percentile of those who enjoy animated films, and I don't even care if they're aimed more at young people. I enjoy wholesome content and with animated or well-done CGI you have so much more freedom to fully portray your vision on the screen. No limits. CGI can be expensive, but not as expensive as top-paid actors haha. The message in the end that you touched on, I loved this because yes we all have that potential inside us. Be brave, and let it fly.

Good reaction! This movie change the animation industry creating a unique style that inspired future animated films to emulate the look of the film. The movie takes elements of Miles Morales comic backstory while adding the multiverse plot line from the Spiderverse comics. In the comics just like the film, Miles is from an alternate universe from the main Marvel comic universe. The main comic universe is dubbed Earth 616 while Miles is from Earth 1610. In the original comic story in 2011, Miles watched his Peter heroically sacrifice himself during a battle with Green Goblin. Feeling guilty for not helping, Miles took it upon himself to take on the role of Spider-Man to honor Peter while being his own hero. Miles just like Peter struggle with everyday problems including having his uncle being a villain just like in the film. He has different abilities like invisibility and his venom blast. Eventually Miles meets the main comic universe version of Peter through multiverse and the two teamed up. Earth 616 Peter tells Miles that he honored the legacy of Spider-Man well. Later in a multiverse event, Miles universe got destroyed but he and his family survived. After helping save the multiverse, Miles & his love ones now live in the main comic universe so now Peter & Miles are both Spider-Man in the same world. :) I like the theme that anyone can wear the mask as that is what Stan Lee said many times in interviews that he believes anyone no matter where you’re from can wear that mask & be a hero.

The Amazing Webhead

This one you got to meet Spider Gwen, Spider Ham, Spider-Man Noir, & Penny Parker who are all from the comics & those are their comic backstories. They all had their own comic run before eventually meeting in the Spiderverse comics. In 2018, Marvel decided to do a storyline where every version of Spider-Man in the entire multiverse team up against a threat that they couldn’t handle on their own. So many versions of spider people were included and was the introduction to Spider Gwen. She first appeared in those Spiderverse comics but people liked her so much that Marvel gave her an ongoing comic series that tells stories from her universe. Just like in the film, Gwen got bit from the spider instead of Peter and Peter became that world’s version of The Lizard that Gwen had to stop ultimately leading to his death riddle her with guilt. This is also your introduction to Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin. He may be a crime boss/only human but he’s really strong to fight. He’s a Spider-Man villain but he’s also the main villain to another hero you haven’t met yet but you will soon. 👀

My second time only watching this. Miles leap of faith montage really hit me in the feels. They're never going to pay it off in the Tom Holland movies, but in Homecoming there was a sort of Miles Morales Easter Egg. Donald Glover played Aaron Davis, whom Spidey webs to his own car after interrogating him in the parking lot. He mentions his nephew in the dialogue. Donald Glover actually inspired the creation of Miles Morales after he wanted to audition for the Amazing Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). Glover also wore a Spidey costume in the season 2 premiere of Community.

Dave Olden

I’ll be watching this tonight. Def looking forward to it. (Btw, dropped a movie suggestion in a direct message. I forgot to include that it’d be a great poll addition as I’m sure plenty of others here might like to see you react to it. 🤷‍♂️)

AdmiralZhou

Oooo yessss so glad you're watching the Spider-Verse movies! Some of the best animation I've ever seen. And the music! I've been listening to the soundtrack for this movie and the second one ever since it came out

Fred Aczon

This is definitely a love letter to Spider-man lore. I love that there's a universe out there where Gwen isn't the victim but the hero. There's a hilarious video in youtube where Donald Glover does standup and explains the controversy of him wanting to be Spider-man, the backlash, and Marvel creating Miles Morales because of it. Which comes full circle when he appears as Miles' uncle in Spider-man Homecoming.

Dave Olden

btw … the movie suggestion was Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

Jojo Garlin

Miles is character that in the comics comes from a different universe of the mainstream comics called Earth 1610 or the Ultimate Universe. The Ultimate Universe was created in the 2000s. It was way to introduce new readers to Marvel without rebooting the mainstream continuity. Fun fact a lot of the MCU origin stories , character designs and personalities take inspiration from the Ultimate Universe

I have seen so many Spider-Man movies and read so many comics, yet was somehow still surprised when his uncle died. My autistic son has been obsessed with these movies for years. It has kind of been his identity. He has seen this movie countless times, dresses up and draws the characters, listens to the music non-stop, and carries figures around everywhere he goes to this day (honestly there are a lot worse movies on which he could be fixated.) So, these stories are very important to us and are to other people as well. During the pandemic when a lot of kids were feeling sad and alone, Jake Johnson/Nick Miller/Peter B. Parker offered to leave a voicemail as Spider-Man for your child and it has been one of the most cherished things for my son. If you're curious, here is Jake Johnson's IG post about it: https://www.instagram.com/p/B98gKpHg6x0/ Another less personal fun fact, a lot of the animators apparently wanted a chance to animate Stan Lee. So there many, many versions of him throughout the movie in the background. You can see him walking his dog, on the street, in the subway cars, etc.

Wait this was so good! I had no idea what to expect from this one, and I really didn't think I'd love it this much! I love the retelling of Spider-Man's story in these movies. Even felt it when we first went into the Andrew Garfield films, that the way the story gets told is very unique for each character, but it still has those same familiar overtones. That while gives us an opportunity to predict what's going to happen, doesn't make those moments any less impactful. Also, I didn't realize until I looked it up after that Spider-Man Noir was voiced by Nicolas Cage! Now you gotta add my favorite movie of his to your watch list haha - Gone in 60 Seconds Also, I just really love that all of the Spider-Man stories are so down to earth and relatable, that they all resonate with us in our own unique ways! The music in this one, omg was so good! So many great songs that fit the vibe of the movie. But my favorite was Prowler's theme, playing so many times ominously throughout the movie, until it finally morphed into the song that was playing during Miles' swinging montage!

Jojo Garlin

Wilson Fisk Aka Kingpin is absurdly strong, he has no super powers but he’s strong enough to fight against super soldier level people and Spider-Man. Though it is very important to understand that Spider-Man holds back a lot even against the supervillains with powers. It’s still impressive that Kingpin can keep up with him. In the movie Wilson was able to kill him because Peter was already dying due to being pushed in the collider. Just to clarify

Jacob

I think the first Spiderverse will be remembered as a timeless classic. A true masterpiece and one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Robin Holmes

This is horrible, but Stan Lee stated that the one thing Spider-Man always had to deal with is losing. Consistently. Spider-Man is never allowed to be successful because Stan Lee wanted a hero who "always got back up" which means he could never be on top. So he can have a decent love life, but be broke. Or get money, but lose the girl. Lee said that Parker could never win because "we'd lose sight of the moral of the story" which is the struggle.

KJ

There was a great technical trick the animators used. When Miles was unsure of himself and struggling to learn the ropes from Peter, he was animated at a lower frame rate than Peter to show he was not as smooth. They increased his frame rate after he took that leap of Faith and embraced who he was.

Robert da Spruce

Fun reaction Kali! I love the look of the animation in this one. How they mimicked the four color printing process used in classic comics to give it that comic book look They even replicated how each color ink didn’t perfectly align with one another. So you would get color fringing on some of the edges I really like what Sony Animation have been doing lately. This film, and most recently, K-Pop Demon Hunters

The Dingo

I mean, the comment in the intro where you said you were ready for another Peter Parker story - I knew then that this movie hadn't been spoiled for you. LOL You didn't see ANY of the twists coming, other than Gwen - but even then you were caught off guard as what you expected to happen to her didn't happen. Chef's kiss.

kaliwali

Yes! I'll be watching 'Across the Spider-Verse' after I watch 'No Way Home" 🩷🔥

kaliwali

Yes! I reallllly need to play these games. I was tempted to play them on my own since I keep hearing they are amazign and my backlog for games has grown so much since I have been trying to get the re-uploads situated before booting up another game! But scheduling wise now I think I'll be done with reuploads by December-ish so I might as well wait a little longer so I can do my playthrough on cam! I know a lot of people have been waiting for that one, myself included lol I hope you enjoyed this one!

kaliwali

I was also surprised that Disney+ didn't carry this one! But they do have the second animated one "Across the Spider-Verse" which I thought was very odd lol. Who knows what these streaming platforms do. I guess just follow the money 😅 I ended up having to rent this on Amazon actually! I guess I should take the "Prime" off when I rent it next time! This one hit home for a loooot of reasons. Definitely because of being a mom as well. I felt for Miles' dad a lot. But I really loved Miles' journey and how he got there! I loooove animated movies! That's why I've seen so many already with my daughter. But there are still a few out there I've been dying to see! I can't wait to check those out :)

kaliwali

I always enjoy your comic book knowledge and reading about it after my reactions! And I also really enjoyed that this story shows that anyone can wear the mask and be that hero. It's definitely a huge part in why I love this story so much. I really love how much they honored Peter's legacy though Miles' journey in this. It felt like a perfect balance. That Peter Parker heart with incredible action. And yes! That introduction to the multiverse is finally starting to appear 👀🔥

kaliwali

Ahhh that's an awesome easter egg! Thank you for sharing that! And I totally agree about the leap of faith montage ❤️‍🔥 This movie was so beautiful!

kaliwali

Hey! I'm planning to check my DMs tonight (sorry it's been a few days most likely!!) so sit tight on that 🩷 But I hope you enjoyed this one!

kaliwali

The animation in this was absolutely incredible!! That mixed with the music made this an easy favorite already 😻🩷 I saved the soundtrack to my spotify right after watching this haha

kaliwali

Oh 100% a love letter to Spider-Man fans! The way they honored Peter Parker's story while mixing in so many new layers of Spider-Man comic book lore and love. Such an awesome film!! I have to see that video hahah

kaliwali

Thank you for the YT link! I was gonna try to go back and find the moment again, but I appreciate this. Very cool easter egg!

kaliwali

I love that! It's honestly a really clever way to reintroduce new readers while expanding on the world 🔥

kaliwali

This has nothing to do with your comment but I love your profile pic! Everytime I see it it takes me to the beach 🤣🩷

kaliwali

Thank you so much for sharing this! I love that Spider-Man has been such an important part of your son's world. What a beautiful message to make your 'identity'. It also shows how much these films can mean beyond just being "movies" and I'm all for that. And that's such a beautiful thing to do during the pandemic! That's a really special core memory 🩷 Also, I thouuuught I saw Stan Lee again sneaking around in the background once or twice lol. I love that!

kaliwali

I knew the voice of Spider-Man Noir sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it! Probably because I haven't seen a Nicolas Cage film yet buuuut I'll add Gone in 60 Seconds to my watchlist for sure now I think that's been my favorite thing about Spider-Man. How down to earth the stories and movies have been. No matter the version. Which is honestly incredible!

kaliwali

Kingpin's strength is scary wild! But thanks for clarifying everything!

kaliwali

Ahh, that is really sad to think about 💔 But I guess what also makes him deeply human as well

kaliwali

As soon as I saw Sony Animation pop up I knew I was going to be mesmerized just like I was in KPOP Demon Hunters! It definitely felt like we got scooped up and dropped into a comic book Thank you for joining me in this one! I loved the animation, too!

William

Perhaps I missed it, but is there still a place in the schedule for Across the Spider-Verse in the near future? Just curious. 😉

kaliwali

I got mixed up with Superman, Batman & X-Men but yes I still plan to watch that one :)

Christian F

To this day, watching this movie in theaters while tripping balls on psychedelic drugs was one of the most insane and existential experiences I have ever had in my entire life. That might be a little too much information and not PG rated. I'm just saying the truth. I saw this movie when it came out and the addition of the psychedelics made it one of the most stimulating and mind-blowing cinematic experiences of all time lol.
