First off, huge applause to you all for picking this in the Patreon Poll for our Horror/Mystery genre. I'm reminding myself right now that I need to get the Comedy/Horror Poll up to you all later today lol. Out of everything on that Horror/Mystery list this felt like the most perfect fit since we have really been on this Sci-Fi kick with Alien, Aliens, Venom, and Andor lately! So, when I saw that UFO zoom by in the beginning of The Thing, I instantly grinned. I just knew you all had picked another spooky sci-fi ride, and I honestly love you all for that!Alright so... The Thing. Wow. 😹 I knew it was going to be intense just based on the comments here and on YouTube, but this? I actually had nightmares about hahaha. I think what really got to me was the gore factor and that constant paranoia of who could be The Thing. You never knew who you could really trust, and the tension just kept building the whole time! But the blood test scene? Absolute genius under pressure. I loved the way they came up with elaborate methods to figure out who was still human and it definitely had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. And that ending... Are they both human? Are they both The Thing? Is one of them The Thing? I started learning toward Childs being The Thing (which, side note, is a young Keith David! I didn't even realize until I checked out the cast afterwards). But if it was Childs, maybe that's why McReady was laughing? Like, he knew it was over for him, and he was sharing that last drink with the monster that won. But then again, how could he be sure? My main reasoning for it being Childs is because he was gone an awfully long time..Yet I still don't know.. And that is what makes this film so brilliant! I'd love to hear your thoughts on who you thought was The Thing or how the ending played out for you. I'm honestly still spiraling over it. I had to google if John Carpenter ever explained the ending and turns out, he never has. Which makes it all even more brilliant. I just picture him somewhere, eating popcorn and scrollign through endless debates online, being the only person alive who actually knows the truth. Thank you all for picking this one! I think the fact that I've been following 3I/Atlas news hasn't help my nightmares lately with this one now in my brain 😅 But I seriously enjoyed it! Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿LINK: https://youtu.be/X1XXBWxAA9II watched this on Amazon Prime (Rented)

It might be a coincidence but if you notice in the end while our hero is breathing out you can see his breath because of the freezing temp but childs you can't see his breath at all . Almost like the freezing temp isn't affecting him hhhhmmmm... Edit: NVM seems it was just the camera angle

Nina

Can I ask something? Completely different subject. Could you include some romance into your reactions or polls? I watched a lot of your reactions in the last few weeks, became a patron for your Tom Cruise movie reactions. 💖 But I noticed that you do a lot of genres except for romance. There are so many great ones I can recommend. Like Jerry Maguire for example, another fantastic Tom Cruise movie. Or Pride and Prejudice for example. There aren't many good romances anymore, the last decade was pretty terrible. But the 90s and 2000s had so many great ones. ❤️

Lmao welp there goes that theory

2026-09-07 13:00 I am so excited to watch his reaction. This is one of my top 10 movies of all time. John Carpenter has two movies in my top 10. My number one is Halloween. But this film is beyond incredible. I love how it holds up to this day. I think where is John Carpenter exceeds with all of his movies is the score that he makes himself. The score is always golden I remember seeing this movie when I was about 16 and the ending rocked me to my core. It was one of the first times I experienced an ending that wasn't happy and left open-ended, and it started me down the path of liking my stories ending that way. At least, especially for horror movies. It makes them scarier and makes the story more interesting. And this movie is a master class at it. I can't wait to see your reaction! Thank you again!

Not really my jam. But I hope you enjoyed the film Kali! And I hope everyone enjoys the reaction!

Also if you look really closely you can see Childs is breathing.

#$%&ing-A! Just my second favorite horror movie of all time (after Alien). Love this flick. Lots of theories out there about who may or may not be the thing in the end. One of the most popular takes note that MacReady's breath is fogging in the cold, whereas Childs' isn't, implying that he is the thing. And maybe that the drink is mixed with gasoline, which the thing really wouldn't be able to notice, having no experience with human taste and food. Not sure it matters, either way. The paranoia here is what always pulls me in--that, and Rob Bottin's special effects, which are still amazing. Good shit.

First off, I’m so glad you watched this one in the poll — it’s honestly one of my favorite horror films of all time. You nailed every point about why this movie is so great: the characters actually make smart choices, and the story leaves you with so many questions even after the ending. It really pulls you in and makes you feel like part of the experience. And of course, Rob Bottin’s effects still hold up incredibly well even today. A few fun facts: during the blood test scene, the shot of the Petri dish with the fake hand used a few quick cuts right before the jump scare to fake you out a little. Also, Carpenter had Dean Cundey use light in the actors’ eyes to indicate who was human—except for Palmer, and notably, he chose not to with Childs and Mac at the end. And can we talk about how creepy that dog was before the kennel scene? The way they got it to move like that is just unreal. I could talk about this film for hours, but I’ll save some for the reaction watch-along tonight—this is one I revisit every year!

Childs breathing is not what I was talking about.

Kali did better on her first viewing of "The Thing" than I did when a friend and his girlfriend invited me over to watch a movie they'd rented on VHS from their local video store. My friend said, "It's supposed to be scary!" He popped the tape into the player and I had a funny feeling about the husky being hunted down by the Swedes... er, Norwegians. NO ONE hunts huskies - they are too valuable to have as working dogs in arctic environments. When the Thing revealed itself in the kennel, I was horrified, never having seen practical effects like that! We got a little further into the movie at which point there was so much tension and anxiety that my friend paused the VHS player then asked me, "You wanna take a short break?" to which I readily agreed. I was so would up that I felt like I need to calm myself away from the movie for a bit. We did finish the movie after our intermission and came away stunned at the unresolved ending. After watching "The Thing" many times over the years my personal feeling is that it's no longer important to me if Childs is the Thing or not. I like the open-endedness of it all and feel that John Carpenter achieved his goal. Carpenter's next film was a twist from the usual horror that he's known for - it's 1984's "Starman". It's something a little more relatable with some great performances by the leads.

Richard

I don't like the bloody stuff either, I just like the story and suspense. There's an "unseen" major character lurking in the background the whole time, which is . . . . . . paranoia. Pervasive, claustrophobic paranoia, as you alluded to. Not knowing who if anyone you can trust (understandable). Also in these kinds of movies it seems characters can’t help but act impulsively, which I can certainly relate to. When “people” stupidly fail to think things through before acting, they can cause unintended irreparable damage, and it can’t be taken back. Forever regret. The curtain falls. Like Steve said below, a lot of us think it was Childs because his breath isn’t coming out as condensation like MacReady’s is. Anyway, as you said last week, I am sure the comedy-horror next week will be much more in your comfort zone although it seems you liked this better than I thought you would.

kaliwali

Ahhh dang! I thought you were onto something!!

kaliwali

Ooo yes, I'd love to add some romance into the mix! I'm a huge sap so the romantic genre always gets to me the most lol. There are a few I've had my eye on through recommendations and I'll definitely add those two to my list as well! Thank you for the recommendations

kaliwali

Omg I also love that the ending is so open-ended!! I think it's brilliant and leaves so much room for thought! It definitely adds a whole other layer of thrill and spooks to it. I hope you enjoy! ✨

kaliwali

Thank you! I did actually enjoy it a lot since it had those sci-fi themes hehe

kaliwali

Gasolineeeee ah! Interesting! Like maybe he handed him one of those maltov's that were in the basement as they were blowing it up. That actually would make a lot of sense why MacReady chuckled like that!!! Ahh.. Interesting to think on more! Thanks for sharing!

kaliwali

The characters were a breath of fresh air after the fiasco with the Alien crews hahaha! They were SO clever and figured out the blood situation so quickly to try to test for The Thing. Definitely makes you feel more invested in their storylines and trying to figure it out with them The effects were SO gooey lol. And very interesting theory on the eye shines!!! Hmmmm. So neither eyes were shining in the end? 🙀 Very interesting. I am really glad this one won the poll! It was creepy and gross yes, but also veeeery interesting, entertaining, and well done! Enjoy ✨

kaliwali

I bet that seeing this for the first time in the 80s was DISTURBING haha. You set the scene so well.. I feel like because I've played really gory games like Diablo and seen some awful stuff just in gaming alone, I wasn't too terrified of these effects but I won't lie that I have definitely been having some vividly awful dreams lately LOL. Just a side effect of this month's watches I suppose 🤣 And I'll have to write Starman down on my list, thank you!

Nina

oh that's great. I thought you might not like romance movies - so glad to hear that you do. 🙏 I really hope to see you react to some of them. You'd love Jerry Maguire. I noticed a lot of people recommended Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, which is one of my favorite movies. That counts as a romance as well, but a more unusual one.

kaliwali

Paranoia can 100% be the scariest of all feelings. Especially being isolated with no comms, no plane, and no people for miles and miles. Shew.. They did a good job at setting the immediate tone of this one with the comms issues, storms and talk of people losing it out there LOL I definitely have been surprising myself with these movies! Alien, Aliens, now this. I really enjoyed each of them so much more than I ever thought I would. The mystery behind them is what does it for me! And getting scared isn't as horrifying as I thought it would be. There still a lot of October left, but I'm still optimistic that I'm actually liking this horror genre a lot more than I thought I ever would and it's helped me be less terrified going into them!

KJ

"Yeah! Get it! Get the flamethrower!" - Kaliwali 2025

The “eye light” trick that Dean Cundey used was specifically for the blood test scene, not the ending. Carpenter and Cundey have both said they wanted to subtly help the audience tell who might still be human in that moment, but by the end, they intentionally left it ambiguous.

I remember watching this when I was around 10. The head spider scene has stuck with me to this day . Back then it looked so real and it holds up pretty good compared to modern CG stuff. I would say Invasion of the body snatchers is another really good suspense horror. The 1978 version.

Hefty517

I was afraid you would have noped out after the dog pen scene. So proud of you, and love how into the paranoia and mystery element of this movie you got.

KJ

Overall the sad thing is Dr Blair realised they were all doomed early on. The infection likelihood was 75%. That's why he had a breakdown while sabotaging the base. He knew it couldn't get out or the world would be in peril.

McShades

I'm not sure which version you watched, mine was slightly different then yours, could you post the length of the movie so I can make sure to match the same copy as yours. Thanks.

kaliwali

I watched this on Amazon Prime and rented it through them! It's also offered through Paramount+ on Amazon Prime which I think is the reason why it said Paramount+ in the beginning. The runtime will always be in the bottom right corner of the movie screen when you watch on here! Hope this helps!

kaliwali

Yeah 75% is a very high probability. If I saw that I'd be freaking out as well..

kaliwali

LOL I keep surprising myself with these horrors! I think because they have all been in the sci-fi genre so it's been manageable 😅 The story in this one was so interesting tho!

kaliwali

If I was 10 I would never sleep again seeing this hahaha.

Armchair Rizzard

What a great treat to enjoy now that I've got home from work. This is one of the best most classic horror movies of the last half century. The practical effects are truly impressive when considering the limitations of the time. Also as you said, the tension is the chief element here and its very entertaining and anxiety inducing. Great movie. I'm making this comment before watching your reaction, but I'll come back and make another afterward.

M1 Maz

You referencing Spider-Man in the intro of movies that have helped prepare you for the scarier stuff LOL. Honestly, truth! I really enjoyed this one! From the overall vibes at the beginning, I thought this was going to be a more Alien style survival film, just banding together to survive the night. But I really appreciated that mystery side, trying to piece together the clues and find out who's The Thing. As for the ending, I'm leaning toward Childs being The Thing, but who knows honestly haha. Fun to theorize now! As for the gore, yeah.... 60's-80's era practical effects in horror freak me out wayyyyy more than modern CGI haha. There were so many moments in this movie that I just couldn't help but laugh while watching. Not that I thought it was a joke, or not scary, but the effects were SO over the top bonkers that all I could do was laugh. The chest opening up and biting the guys hands off? The spider-head? Absolute gold

rubberkidney

good ol cosmic horror. the youd rather be alone in the universe type of aliens for sure.

kaliwali

I hope your work trip went smoothly!! Glad you're coming back to one of your favorite horrors here haha. Once again I keep surprsing myself with how much I genuinely enjoy these sci-fi horror movies. I really thought I would have given up on the whole 'spooky month' movies by now! And even though this one was so bloody and gross, I loved the paranoia and mystery behind it all so much that it kept me entertained instead of just creeped out 🤣 I hope you enjoy when you can!

kaliwali

Spider-Man films were definitely a toe dip into the horror realm and I will always appreciate them for that 🤣😂 But I really do keep surprising myself with how much I enjoyed Alien and now this! I really thought that I'd be running for the hills already with these October movies like I was last year LOL. I think it's like what you said.. The mystery side of it keeps it so interesting and intense and the horror/gore/effects just become part of the journey. You know they'll come and probably scare the crap out of you again, but the mystery and tension behind everything makes it easy to focus on that instead of the horror elements if you want!

pinkdino99

Well done. This is easily considered widely among both critics and fans to be the best horror movie ever made. I had a copy on VHS as a 13 yr old kid, and got as far as the dog scene before "NOPE"-ing out. Some fun facts... this was made by John Carpenter whom invented the slasher genre with Halloween (should be on your list), and worked with Kurt again on cult classics the thriller Escape From New York and comedy action movie Big Trouble in Little China. Carpenter was an expert at making great movies on a shoe-string budget. The FX were from a young maestro called Rob Bottin. Bottin was struggling under the load, so Stan Winston who did the Terminator FX did the dog scene (which is actually a puppet !) As to the ending, after initial screenings fans mobbed Carpenter asking for a resolution. He told them that it was up to them to decide, and they all yelled "OH I HATE THAT !!!" There is a recently made prequel (which is all bang and no tension) which had an interesting revelation. The Thing can not replicate metal, so that team's test involved looking at teeth. If you had fillings, you were human ! At the end of our movie Childs has an earring, so by the future film's logic, he was OK. This movie is a part of Carpenter's unofficial Apocalypse trilogy (along with the underrated Prince of Darkness and the brilliant Mouth of Madness). In each of these movies it is GAME OVER for humanity from the first reel. No matter what anyone does, a rescue team will come and be infected by trace organisms, and humanity is doomed. One more Carpenter movie that I think you'd love is called The Fog. A creepy ghost story with Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) and her mum Janet Leigh (Psycho). If you are doing 80s Carpenter, you can't go wrong. His films went severely downhill in the 90s though. As with all horror remember this mantra... "It's only a movie !" What's that behind you !?!

pinkdino99

The dog's name was Jeb (he was a GOOD BOI !) The crew were stunned at his ability to act, particularly the scene where he walks slowly down the corridor before going into Norris' room. Jeb did not look once at the many crew members or cameras. Jeb also appeared in a few other movies.

pinkdino99

I'd add Oscar winning As Good As It Gets to a romance poll. Crotchety OCD suffering romance novelist Jack Nicholson is horrid to everyone except for the only waitress in New York that can put up with him (Helen Hunt). Feel good and romance. Also Whip IT! which is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut about Texas roller derby with then actress Ellen (now Elliott) Page.

pinkdino99

Oh and for more Keith David and John Carpenter AND sci-fi try They Live !

Brad

You couldn't see Childs' breath. Only Macready's. Unless that was an accident and we're just not supposed to know.

kaliwali

A few others mentioned this here! Very interesting..

StianWiu

I am very late to the party here, I had never seen The Thing until now and watching the beginning was very different for me as I am norwegian I could understand what the norwegian guy with the gun was yelling. Interesting to think this could have panned out very differently if he had spoken in English instead.

Antarctica research stations study Earth’s climate, the polar environment, and even deep‑space physics. The continent is one of the most scientifically valuable places on the planet because its ice, atmosphere, oceans, and ecosystems preserve records and processes found nowhere else.

All I can say .-ˋˏ(•˕ •マ༻❁𝓚𝓪𝓵𝓲𝔀𝓪𝓵𝓲❀༺/ᐠ- ˕ -マˎˊ- is.. Childs or MacReady infected? Hrmm, dunno, but if MacReady was.. then it's playing 5D chess the way it's drinking out of its various alcohol bottles and then nonchalantly sharing them with others team members! Now taking in consideration of what Fuchs says about preparing your own meals, eating only out of cans. Highly suspicious I'd say, then handing Child's the bottle at the end then laughing when he drinks. ╮ (.ᵕ ❛ ᴗ ❛.) ╭ 1982, definitely practical effects, gotta luv em. I remember hearing something about using green mint bubble gum during Norris's transformation when his head detached. Definitely looked well done.
