There was a haunting beauty in watching Truman stumble toward the reality of his own life while the world watched, cheered, and controlled him. And beneath all that control, there was fragile, unstoppable hope that pushed him forward the whole way. Hope that he would see Sylvia again. Hope that there was something more to life than the tiny, sheltered bubble he couldn't seem to ever leave.I kept finding myself torn. On one side, the producers, so obsessed with their perfect illusion almost convinced me it was kindness. A safer world free from violence, hate, sin. After watching Se7en I almost preferred Truman's world for a moment. But then there was Sylvia. Aching, furious, desperate for Truman to wake up and claim a life that's really his. A lot of this film felt like a fight between love and manipulation. And I will always choose and root for love.Jim Carry was incredible in this! I still saw that goofy wild energy from Liar, Liar, but dialed way back. He brought something so much deeper and raw into this role as Truman. The way he showed innocence, his quiet rebellion, his hunger for freedom. I found myself feeling the same feelings as the people in The Truman Bar: Laughing, aching, and cheering for him. This movie definitely still lingers strongly afterward. It asks deep questions about what's real, what's chosen, and what cages we live in without ever noticing. I felt myself rooting not just for Truman, but for every part of myself that dares to push past the walls of my own reality. And I loved it for that! What Jim Carrey film should I check out next!? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

KJ

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is Jim Carrey's best dramatic role. It's very raw and very real, even if many of the scenes are surreal.

TheJoeKerr

“Good morning! And in case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening and good night!” I still sometimes say that line to friends when I know I won’t see them the rest of the day. Also got to do that lean and smile 😆

I'm about to watch the reaction, but I thought I'd share this first. There is a *FANTASTIC* examination of The Truman Show by a YouTuber called Christopher Bingham. It really goes deep, tackling questions like what the deeper themes of the movie are, character examinations, and my favorite segment: "When does Truman figure it out?" Hint: it might be far earlier than expected! It was initially spread out over 8 episodes I think, but here's a link to the all-in-one version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zds_mmQD5m0 It's almost 2 hours long, but it's outstanding the whole way through. Just FYI: if you view the Christopher Bingham's full list of videos, there are also deep-dives into Groundhog Day and the best Disney animated movie ever made - despite how insane and chaotic the production process was - The Emperor's New Groove. Depending on if you seen them, or what you may have heard previously, there might be some "spoliery" type stuff about. Nothing more than you'd probably see in a trailer, but just FYI. And if you've not seen Groundhog Day or The Emperor's New Groove... well, I would think the best place for those would be on a "To Watch" list. Probably at the very top. :D Also also... because I can't resist, here's a teeny, tiny taste of just how wild the making of The Emperor's New Groove was. This is a snippet from a Vulture article about the movie called "We’ll Never Make That Kind of Movie Again". It's spoiler-free: David Reynolds (Groove's screenwriter): I’ll tell you one other thing about this story that nobody gets. One day, a friend of mine at the studio comes by pushing a two-wheel cart. It had three or four legal boxes on it. He goes, “Okay, Reynolds, thanks for this.” I go, “What’s that?” He goes, “This is the Groove, these boxes. This is everything you’ve written.” Anytime you write something and you hand it in, they stamp it and it goes into a box somewhere, because Disney owns it. Some time after the movie came out, a guy knocks on my office door and says, “Are you Dave Reynolds? I’m from archives. I just need the final script for Emperor’s New Groove. They didn’t send one down.” I go, “What’s that?” He goes, “The final draft, the whole final script.” I go, “No script.” He goes, “There’s no script? What are you talking about?” I go, “We don’t have a script. We never wrote a script. We just made the movie.” He goes, “You’ve got to have a script. Archives has to have a script.” “I don’t know what to tell you. Tell them to go see the movie. It’s in theaters right now.” He goes, “You guys don’t have bound pages?” I go, “Nope. We have no bound pages. There’s three or four legal boxes. You can have all you want. I saw them the other day.” They had a couple interns just take all the pages and put them into a document, and then they wrote interstitials, and they slapped my name on it. This is the honest-to-God truth: The first and only draft of The Emperor’s New Groove was handed in two weeks after the movie was in theaters.

I think the purpose of us not seeing anything beyond him exiting the door is that the show is over. We don't get to watch his life anymore. Time to move on. "Where's the TV guide?" 😁

Fanchman

In case you're interested in another drama with Jim Carrey, one relatively unknown movie is "The Majestic". It takes place in California during the 50's. It doesn't have a strong following, but I really enjoyed that movie.

Michael

That's a fantastic movie and a Carrey movie that gets lost in the fold.

Fanchman

One of the few Jim Carrey movies with little to no crazy antics. Just a good quality drama.

I had never seen this movie before until watching it with you, but I did still know its premise. So it was very cool to see you go totally blind into this and figure out the crazy world first hand! I love how this movie was both so serious and raised so many important questions, while also remaining somewhat lighthearted with Jim Carrey's trademark humor coming through. Just like I would have been if this show was real, I was 100% *invested* haha Also, funny side note - Since I have a lot of meetings at work with people who are in different parts of the world at the same time, I often open with "Good morning, good afternoon, good evening!" Now I guess I just gotta add Good Night to it LOL

Mister Lou

I would TOTALLY watch this, I'd be the guy in the bath! LoL some Jim Carrey movies I'd recommend are - The Cable Guy (1996) - Bruce Almighty (2003) - Man on the Moon (1999) - Yes Man (2008) - The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013) - The Number 23 (2007) - Lemony Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) side note one of my all time favourite albums by Eminem is The Eminem Show his album title is inspired by Truman Show and the cover art is inspired by Jim Carrey's Man on the Moon cover art.

Andre R

I've seen in mentioned twice but Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an absolute must watch

Richard

It’s interesting, most comedians who take the plunge at acting are really good at it (Robin Williams). One reason I think is that being a comedian requires you to be an actor part of the time. The second reason is that for many comedians, comedy was a way to cope with pain or trauma and those things fuel acting ability as well. Jim Carrey’s family was once homeless. There are many that disliked his manic behavior, but he became a great actor.

Wil Castillo

The next Jim Carrey movies you should watch: Dumb and Dumber Bruce Almighty The Mask As for The Truman Show, I don't think I would be watching 24/7. I don't think I would even have it on in the background. But I would probably check in on it from time to time. Also, can I just say how much I like that you're choosing movies from the ones that were suggested and recommended to you? At the start of each week, I start wondering which movie will be next. This was a good movie to watch again. It makes me think, what if our lives were the same as The Truman Show? What if we're living in a simulation, kinda like The Matrix? Anyway, have a Good Morning, a Good Afternoon, a Good Evening and Good Night!

Lastboyscout73

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it's a real mind bender.

Chris

I struggle with this film. Always feel like it’s too much, ya know? Of COURSE it’s bad to not have any actual genuine relationships with anybody else. That’s kinda obvious, no? I find myself wishing they’d complicated it by adding more genuine conflict among his interlocutors where there’s less clarity in what’s performance vs. what’s real. I guess at bottom it’s just about Truman’s journey… I suppose I just find that less interesting than I’d have been in a deeper dive into the bigger thematic questions.

Joe

You mentioned wanting to see Truman get together with Sylvia at the end. But I am glad they didn't. I think the whole point was when he left, Truman's life was no longer for other's viewing pleasure, both watchers of the Truman Show in the movie and watchers of the movie. I will echo others that I would love to see a reaction to Eternal Sunshine, my favorite Jim Carrey performance and one of my favorites in general. In 2022, Jim Carrey announced he was likely retiring from acting, saying ""It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink, that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I'm taking a break." The next year he announced he would be returning to play Dr. Robotnik in Sonic The Hedgehog 3.

Chris Truex

You're one of the first reactors I've seen notice the makeup bib on the lady at the travel agency (I certainly didn't the first time)

Mark Messer

I agree with people recommending Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind. Great movie!

Nina

We don't know what happens after he leaves. But the whole point is that we don't get to watch him any longer. 🙂

McShades

one of my favorite movies. Sometimes I think comedians make the best drama actors. You should see Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society (1989), one of his best acting jobs, especially when you take into consideration that Robin Williams can't stand still for 2 seconds lol. As for the Truman show, I don't think I could watch it in the real world, just because it would probably get boring watching him do the same thing day in and day out, when I look at my own life, I work 8 to 5, 5 days a week, and usually hang with my same friends on the weekends... With occasional excitement like snowboarding trips, Jet Skiing, Hiking, etc... but overall I think it would be a boring watch. I'll just wait for the DVD highlights disc to come out :)

Phil Stubblefield

I thought she had just come from eating lunch and had forgotten about the napkin tucked into her blouse... D'oh! 🤦🏻

Onno Smits

Gosh, what a great movie. Such a wild combination of funny, dramatic, and above all, just sad. Others are recommending Jim Carrey movies, so let me suggest an Ed Harris film. He's the actor who played the creator/producer in this. He is absolutely phenomenal in "The Rock" (1996). A great action-/comedy-film. Something for next year's Summer Vibes perhaps?

kaliwali

For sure gonna watch this one soon!

kaliwali

Ahh an Ed Harris recommend! I feel like he looked so familiar, but after looking through his films I realized I hadn't seen any yet! I'll definitely add The Rock to my list, thank you :)

kaliwali

Ahh, I remember getting a ton of recommendations for Dead Poets Society! Thank you for the reminder!! And I guess that's really true about it getting boring and just waiting for the greatest hits DVD haha

kaliwali

Definitely checking that one out soon then!

kaliwali

I love that so much and it makes this movie even deeper!! That's a very interested golden ink role for him haha... Hmm

kaliwali

I can see what you're saying here! On a first time watch, it was very intense and enjoyable to see Truman figure out just how much his life was controlled.. I guess that is just the deeper overall theme here.

kaliwali

For sure gonna check out soon with all these recommendations!

kaliwali

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be watching 24/7 lol. But I would check in from time to time. I'm on Twitch a lot since my whole content creation career began over there and I have a ton of friends in that space! So when they do 24 hour subathons or days long subathons, I'm definitely in there for most of it even if it's just on in the background lol. I always think about the simulation theory! It's one of my favorites to think about even though it does freak me out as well 🤣

kaliwali

Oh for sure! Being a comedian is definitely being an actor. You have to act genuine enough to have the audience believe what you're saying and also laugh at it lol. Jim Carrey is very gifted!

kaliwali

Oo haven't heard that one recommended yet! Thank you!

kaliwali

Definitely a lot of recommendations for that one up in here! I'll have to watch it v soon

kaliwali

I read this about 2 days ago and went on a binge of Bingham's YouTube LOL. Not for the 2 days but I just haven't been able to sit down and respond to comments until now. Thank you so much for sharing that channel with me! I watched the Emperor's New Groove one and was so shocked by all of it hahaha. Appreciate it!

kaliwali

LOL the guy in the bath hanging onto the shower curtain had me dyingggg Thank you so much for the recommendations! I've seen the Lemony Snicket films since I looooved the books growing up! But none of the others yet. And that's amazing about the Eminem album!! I need to go look at that again!

kaliwali

LOL I wonder if people in those meetings get Truman vibes from your openings 🤣

Nina

one of the greatest scripts ever written!

Nick

Yes! A truly amazing movie and Jim Carrey's best performance in my opinion.

Nina

Ed Harris is so amazing as God/The Creator. I loved that he was nominated for an oscar for this. You can see in such a weird way, how much Truman means to him, how much he wanted to keep him safe. He was like his kid. It's such a wonderfully complex role. And I think he was right when he said that if Truman really wants to leave he can. The ending shows that. Sure they are trying to stop him, but the ending shows that he was right. He can turn back anytime, or not even try because he's afraid. But in the end he made it through all of that because of how much he wanted it. Nothing could stop him, not even a storm. He has more determination than ever before. It's because of his own strength and willingness that he is free at the end. 💖

kaliwali

Ed Harris did a phenomenal job! And yes! I honesty didn't realize how much Truman meant to him until that end scene. Him cradling the speaker to talk to him as if he was cradling Truman himself... It really shifted my perspective on him all over again in that moment! And I love what you said about Truman's freedom & how it was possible because of his 'own strength and willingness' because YES. Thank you for sharing!

Aleksandras M

you should watch The Majestic, in my opinion best movie by Jim Carrey

Dan Gonya

It makes me wonder, like, what if Truman ended up being a serial killer or something like that? Would they have kept filming? Or if Truman killed somebody, would they continue the show from a prison setting? Just thinking about some of the stuff the crazy producer didn't think of.
