I really looooooved Constantine! It's dark, smoky, and unapologetically cynical. It's a meditation on what it means to live in a world already split between Heaven and Hell. This movie doesn't treat them like faraway realms, it treats them as reflections of the choices we make here every day. Every act of kindness or cruelty tips your own personal balance. And if you all have been following my BSG journey, you know how much I believe in this already. We're not waiting until the end to see which way our scales tip, we're already living in both.In the middle of this balance stands John Constantine. Keanu Reeves at his most haunted and human form yet, which is honestly wild to even say after seeing John Wick recently. He's the man who has seen too much to believe and suffered too much to stop. A sinner who does holy work, a cynic who still chooses to fight for something better. What makes him so poetic is that he doesn't just fight out of hope. He fights out of defiance.Keanu's role was so elegant and heartbreaking, yet again. He really does have a knack for these roles. You can feel the weight of his damnation in every exhale, every cigarette. And that final act of restraint, when he doesn't take what he easily could, said everything about who he's become. He finally finds a sliver of peace by letting go. By proving to himself that redemption doesn't always need a reward. So for me, Constantine was a mirror. One that reflects the hells we build and the heavens we yearn and reach for. It's poetic, tragic, and strangely comforting. Because if Heaven and Hell really are already here, then maybe salvation isn't some distant promise. Maybe it's just the small, defiant choice to do good in a world that tempts us not to.Thank you all so much for the votes and recommendations for this one! Keanu Reeves is one of my favorite actor discoveries of this year, hands down! It's crazy how Constantine felt like it was speaking my language. A world where Heaven and Hell already coexist, where every soul is caught in the tragic web between both. And one man had the audacity to stare down the Devil and flip him off on his way to salvation... 10/10 for me 🤣🔥Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿LINK: https://youtu.be/ZS_Izw2YXXMI rented this from Amazon Prime

Looking forward to checking out your reaction Kali!

Knew you'd love it. Grabbing my drinks and snacks right now!

Despite this movie having little to do with the comic book (John Constantine, Hellblazer) that inspired it--and which I love--I really, really like this movie. It just works. The noir feel works, the largely unexplained magical elements work, and Keanu Reeves (who is not a British blonde guy, as he is in the comic book) works. Also, you can never go wrong with Rachel Weisz or Tilda Swinton; although, it's Peter Stormare's interpretation of Lucifer that steals the show for me, and may just be my favorite movie version of the devil.

When Pixel met Duck :) I'm happy you liked it! Me I'm arranging my couch and my popcorn to enjoy it again.

rubberkidney

you should do a silksong playthrough, also constantine will def mix it up with mainline dc heros like superman and batman. mostly he sticks to himself though, mostly.

The Amazing Webhead

Good reaction. If you didn’t know, John Constantine is actually a DC character who crossed paths with Batman, Superman, & others in the DC universe in comics & animated stuff. So technically this was your first DC reaction. He’s an interesting character & has great stories. A underrated film for sure.

Onno Smits

Great reaction! I knew you'd dig the subject matter! You missed the post-credit scene! 😱 It's worth going back and taking a look for yourself. I would hope that if you are a really good person, one of the perks would be that you get to flip off the devil personally as you ascend. 🤣

Was that a little Tenacious D karaoke/reference at the start? And seeing A Perfect Circle live? Showcasing that great taste in music once again. It's funny, I mentioned how I have a love/hate with paranormal/possession movies towards The Conjuring with it sitting sorta in the middle. While not as strongly themed, Constantine is absolutely a case of love for me. There is a number of reasons why but a big one is the lack of the "based on true events" tag which I said before, I think movies sometimes think that will equal a good/better movie instead of just making a good/better movie. The character of Constantine is such a great smartass and sometimes ass-ass, I think in large part due to Keanu's performance. The movie just has so many themes I enjoy. Its dark, gritty, gothic, comic booky, occult, etc. I know you're still very much heavy in the world of Marvel playing catch up but now that you've dipped a toe into DC with this I look forward to when more of their movies appear. There is absolutely some stinkers but also a lot of great movies as well. The Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy, The Batman (2022), Joker (2019) as well as a bunch of more classics and I guess some of their more modern stuff of the last decade. You may also enjoy the two Hellboy movies by Guillermo del Toro. They are absolutely different movies, one is more Supernatural Fantasy Horror while the other is more Dark Fantasy Horror. But they're both sort of in that gothic occult with a "superhero" realm.

This one ended up being such a pleasant surprise! I initially thought it was going to be only an action packed romp through Hell, just blasting demons haha, but it ended up being so much more. The whole story and world, with the crossover of heaven and hell on earth felt both so mythical but also real at the same time. And I felt that this ended up being such a perfect movie for you to react to with your own background and beliefs! You were always several steps ahead of me with picking up on what was happening and where the story was going next. Also, a Perfect Circle concert in a thunderstorm sounds like such a vibe haha Absolutely loved Keanu in this! Through all the films with him, he's just so good at expressing emotion. His voice is always so level, but through the pacing of his speech, his expressions, and his body language, he just makes us feel what he's feeling inside so well. While we're on the Keanu train, it's another action movie, but one of my favorites from him that I gotta recommend is Speed!

Mister Lou

I agree an epic way to die and go to Heaven, flipping off The Devil.. LoL there's a cool little after credit scene, you might want to check out, next time watching this. I would recommend a funny movie called "Always Be My Maybe" that's on Netflix.

ButtercupsTrueLove

If no one has mentioned it yet, there is a short post-credits scene.

So, I was raised Catholic (I will keep my views on religion to myself) but because this is based on a comic book along with the cast, I enjoyed all the references that I grew up with growing up going to Catholic school classes and being an alter boy and so on. I have said I never like to watch scary movies but I do make exceptions from time to time. It depends on the content I suppose. Both Marvel and DC have a supernatural side to their comics. For marvel, after watching The Eternals and you heard the voice of Blade, he is a part of that supernatural side of Marvel. They were and might still experiment with going down that path someday but it would seem it's been put off for now. I'm not as big of a fan boy for DC comics but I think John Constantine is one of their biggest characters for the supernatural. They have talked for years about making a sequel to this movie, and Keanu always says he would love too but they haven't figured out a story they want to tell in a second movie. It may never happen but I hold out hope it will. You have probably been told this a bunch of times now, but you missed the small post credit scene. Going forward, it might be wise to check by letting the credits roll or even mousing through to see if one is coming. If you can still access the movie, I would suggest going and watching it real quick. It's nothing you need to show everyone your reaction too but it is a nice bow to end the movie with. I knew you would love it, so this is why I said, hands down, it has to be Constantine. I'm glad I was right. :)

John does usually do his own thing and there is certainly nothing in this to say it connects with the dc universe directly but John there are many other media usually the animated films where John does interact with the dc cast .

Jordan

Continuing your Keanu phase, I HIGHLY suggest "The Replacements" it is a severely underrated movie!

Farbod

Yup. Came here to say this.

Excellent reaction Kali! Wasn’t sure how you’d feel about the film, so I’m glad you liked it! Very interesting take on heaven and hell Not sure if you’re familiar with actress Michelle Monaghan. But apparently she was supposed to be a half breed love interest for Constantine. But that whole story line was cut from the film My guess is that they felt it distracted from the “will they, won’t they” relationship between Constantine and Angela You can still see Michelle briefly in the hospital scene at the end as one of the half breeds showered with holy water Now that October and Andor are over. Frees up some room. What’s next? Some comedies perhaps?

Squeesher

YOU RECOGNIZED THE SONG! Easily the coolest part of your reaction for me is that you not only recognised "Passive", but that you've seen APC live, and during a thunderstorm. *bows deeply* I can't wait for more Keanu Cinematic Universe, and for CP2077 to starting being re-uploaded on your gaming channel!! Peter Stormare is THE Lucifer I think of when I picture the character. He was fking magnificent in the role! "So do I take the rest of my clothes off or can I leave them on?" '...' "John?" '... I'm thinking.' Keanu is a charisma main 😜 Couple things: 1. "Softener?" which you said after the demons are killed by Constantine and Angela starts retching. He said "It's the sulphur." The smell of sulphur left over from the death of the demons was making her ill. It smells like rotten eggs. 2. The water bottles with the crosses on them (which should have been a hint hehe) were HOLY WATER! He set them up as a kind of barrier around the outer wall of his apartment. "I'd choose to be in denial." So you're saying... you'd choose the blue pill 😄 (And I also view the world similar to you, which I noticed in BSG, and so I absolutely KNEW you would resonate with this movie...because right after seeing it in theatres during my final High School year's spring break is when I started shaping my worldview. The film had that much influence on me!)

kaliwali

I hope you enjoyed it! 🍿✨

Yes! The noir feel is what did it for me as well! I knew as soon as John Constantine appeared for that first exorcism that I was going to love this movie even though it had that 'paranormal' vibe lol. It was just different and worked SO well. I also really loved Peter Stormare's Lucifer. He played him SO well all the way down to his insane giggle lol. Loved this movie so much!! I'm planning on rewatching it on my TV this weekend with my husband for Halloween since he hasn't seen it yet!

kaliwali

I hope you enjoyed it! 🍿✨ I'll be giving this a rewatch this weekend already for some Halloween vibes since my husband hasn't seen it yet!

kaliwali

I haven't played the first Hollow Knight yet! I'm just a lover of the music from that game lol. But I think I'd enjoy it? I've actually never played a 2D Action type before!

kaliwali

That's actually a really epic for DC movie! I just watched V for Vendetta this morning and was surprised to see DC Comics pop up again!! Complete and wild coincidence that I've watched 2 DC films now back to back lol. Or are there 'no coincidences' 👀😅

kaliwali

Ah, you're right! My mod even warned me about it and I completely forgot. I guess because by the end of this one I even forgot it was in the DC universe which is still wild to me lol. And yesss! 🔥 Honestly if the movie ended right there I wouldn't even be mad LOL

kaliwali

In GOW there was a "spear of destiny" as well and I couldn't stop humming Tenacious D for the rest of that playthrough 😅🤣 A Perfect Circle was soooo good live. One of those concerts that I wish I could relive over and over And I totally get it and agree! I did not think there would be exorcisms in this movie and I was a little taken back at first.. But the noir feel and tone throughout the entire thing made it.. acceptable and okay lol. Brilliant even. And DC is definitely on my radar now! I was going to get into X-Men next, but I think I've accidentally gone down this DC path with Constantine and now V for Vendetta which I watched this morning and only realized in the beginning it's a DC as well! Such a crazy coincidence (or is it?? 😅) So maybe I'll start up Batman/Superman and flip/flop my time with them! We'll see :)

kaliwali

Yesss "mythical but also real" was a perfect way to describe this one! I also thought it would only be action packed and was so surprised with the depth and heart put into it all! Plus, with how I look at the world it definitely hit me on that crazy spiritual wavelength while still being amazingly epic and weird at the same time lol. A Perfect Circle live during a thunderstorm is a moment I wish I could relive over and over lol. It was such an awesome night! But yes, Keanu just gets it lol. He has such a calm quiet restraint but underneath you can just tell he'd easily f stuff up when necessary lol. I'll definitely add Speed to the list now!

kaliwali

My mod even warned me and I still forgot lol! Sorry everyone! 🤣😅

kaliwali

Oh wow, I didn't know that about you yet! Thank you for sharing! And I agree, Constantine definitely earns a pass in the 'scary movie' department. I know it has demons and a whole exorcism in it, but it just works and hits so much differently. I would loooove to see a sequel to this! Keanu was absolutely amazing in this as well. He brings such a weary grace to Constantine that I don't think anyone else could really hit. Totally missed that end credit scene even with a warning from my mod lol. One of those weeks I guess!

kaliwali

Thank you so much! I was really surprised there was a movie out there with my views on heaven/hell! I had no idea about Michelle Moaghan! She would have fit a love interest role with Keanu so well.. But yeah, I guess the 'will they, won't they' wouldn't have felt as deep as it did here. And I love how they summarized it by him being a changed man. As for what's next, I'll be going through my top recommendations for a bit! Definitely sprinkling in more comedy for sure tho :)

kaliwali

Yesssss! Hearing A Perfect Circle in that bar felt so fitting and I was completely taken back. I loooove how much music goes into movies with Keanu Reeves lol. And yesss, more in the Keanu Universe for sure! I actually didn't play Cyberpunk on YouTube so I can't re-upload that since it was on Twitch.. Very sad! But I did only get through the beginning of the game before I ended up stopping Twitch, so maybe I could re-visit it for an eventual YouTube playthrough sometime! Thank you for the details also! I totally misheard sulfur lol. It's also really neat to see that you also view the world this way! It's amazing that a movie can leave such a deep mark on you, especially when you're forming your worldview. I think that's why I am so inspired by music. Music and gaming was my life since I was 10 and figured out how to play Sims on the PC lol.

rubberkidney

well its the one time where the acronym 'GOAT' actually applies. the atmosphere and the bug world that it creates totally match the music you would love it, and be down to watch a playthrough.

Squeesher

Aww darn it! Well I fully support a new CP2077 run for Youtube sometime down the road then. As Lu said, "Busybusybusybusybusybusy!" and I'm sure you are too! lol With the excellent but brief Andor behind us now, maybe we can return to BSG? I feel like getting teary-eyed with someone while a flute or tin-whistle plays a Celtic melody accompanying some sweet, tender moment 😄 Also, just thank you for taking the extra time to respond at all to us 🤗 Yeah, I'm definitely of the mind that this reality, this universe, this dimension...is the only place we will ever have influence over, and that heaven and hell exist here already, in many forms. Another main reinforcement of my own beliefs is the distinction between "knowing" and "believing", another thing that gets both said and shown in this movie, and in the character of John Constantine in particular I have a feeling that if he could go back in time, Keanu would request that Neo's real name be John Anderson instead of Thomas Anderson in The Matrix lmao. Just for consistency's sake! (I played The Sims too, and my Mom got really into it! She was almost 50 at the time, and I was very proud lol. She still games to this day, probably more than I do these days!)

Amper Sand

Of course I've enjoyed it Kali, it goes without saying - keep up the good work 🤗

Paul Wright

I freaking loved this movie. I absolutely loved the cast of this film, was not expecting to see Shia LaBeouf in this. The visuals and the story were freaking epic. Last I heard on the sequel, James Gunn, head of DC Studios, said they are still waiting on the script and he stays in contact with Keanu. I recognized Djimon Honsou(Guardians of the Galaxy 1, Captain Marvel, Gladiator), Tilda Swinton( Doctor Strange), the actor that played the priest(Pruitt Taylor Vince). My time with Matt Ryan's portrayal of John Constantine sorta prepared me for this film, so it wasn't too bad on the horror aspects. I would recommend checking out his tv show, since it's mostly self-contained.

Ricardo de Leon

A Perfect Circle is a whole vibe and perfectly embodies this film and era

Ricardo de Leon

Another film recommendation with a similar vibe and religious undertones, is The Boondock Saints. It's another cult classic with an incredible cast, epic noir-action scenes, and the soundtrack was used well.

FatLittleButterfly

Keanu flipping off the devil while ascending to heaven is pure cinema!

rob bryant

not sure if anyone has commented yet, but if you like the music in Keanu's movies, he's actually the bassist for a band called DOGSTAR
