EPIC 🔥 Heath Ledger's Joker was like watching chaos learn choreography. His madness, aura, and demeanor felt so rhythmic. He was unpredictable yet deliberate. Magnetic but in the most unsettling of ways. He didn't just play the Joker, he became the Joker in every sense. Every glance, every line, every whisper sent full body chills down my spine. Never before has a villain made me feel these types of emotions. Terror, awe, and shock. It was so heavy that I couldn't help but tear up at the level of unhinged chaos lol.By the end of the movie, I mourned for Bruce. For Batman. For the man who can't ever really separate those two (sometimes even three) parts without losing pieces of himself. Heroism always looks so lonely. This story never gets easier no matter how many times I hear it. I saw his sacrifice coming from a mile away, but it still hollowed me out. That kind of sacrifice was honestly so human. He stepped into darkness on purpose to become the villain so others could still cling onto hope. It was so noble and painful at the same time that it gave me that throat-tightening feeling where you don't know if you want to smile or cry. With this kind of ending. Watching Harvey fall, watching Rachel be taken, watching Bruce carry all of the blame on his shoulders. It felt like watching the light of Gotham city dim. The Dark Knight didn't just show me chaos and sacrifice. It made me actually feel the weight of what it costs to stand between them. Brilliant, tragic, and incredibly epic movie! I can't wait to finish this trilogy with you all next week 🦇✨ See you all then!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/KGqEABFSlbMI watched this on HBO Max

RIP Heath Ledger🙏🏼 What an incredible talent he was

Hefty517

Posting this 2 hours into the workday is torture. 😂

The Dingo

Ledger as Joker: Best. Villian. Ever. Thanos is number 2 and Killmonger is 3.

Robert da Spruce

Been waiting for this one! Can’t wait to watch your reaction Kali! Have a great weekend!

Nina

One of the top 5 best performances of all time. Insane. Heath died shortly after filming and won the oscar for best supporting actor posthumously. His family accepted the award instead. Very emotional moment 😢 I find it so sad that Heath didn't get to witness the effect this performance had on people, how much he was praised for it. And how it became such a huge part of popculture. When you see this performance and afterwards you watch a romcom like "10 things I hate about you" - it's just the craziest experience. It's insane that this is the same person...

Chris

Nolan is fantastic, so it's gonna be pretty good regardless... but the true separator, I think, is Ledger. He's on another planet. Now might be a time to consider putting Brokeback Mountain on the schedule, his other grand performance. It's a fantastic movie, and juxtaposing his performance in that to this... damn. One of the great careers we never got to see. RIP.

Hey everyone! If you prefer the old way make sure you check the description box for the YouTube link. I'll be doing both going forward ✨ Thank you for all the feedback on which format you prefer! SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/KGqEABFSlbM

Ooh! This is your first Heath Ledger film too?? Prior to these he was playing heartthrob roles like in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), A Knight's Tale (2001), Casanova (2005), Lords of Dogtown (2005) and Brokeback Mountain (2005).

Darian Harman

My plan was to re-watch all three episodes of Pluribus tonight, but fortunately, my plan has been foiled by this post. I always, always come away from this film with something new to say about it; some new wrinkle in my perception of it.

AdmiralZhou

Yesssss so glad you watched this. This is my favorite movie of all time. Every time I watch it I’m consumed by Heath Ledger’s performance. Even though I know it’s Heath, every time I watch all I see is the Joker. He did such an amazing job. I’ll never get tired of watching this movie

TheJoeKerr

RIP Heath Ledger. I loved his performance and he earned that best supporting actor award. The scene he first had with Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal) was the first time she had seen him in full character but a lot of what Heath Ledger did coming up to her with the knife and grabbing her was all improved. It’s why Maggie looked really creeped out during that scene. Also Heath would lick his lips a lot not because that’s what the Joker did but the prosthetics scars would start to slip so he would lick them to get them to stay/stick. It made his portrayal that much more creepy. “Some men are not looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn”

Nina

Harvey is in my opinion the most tragic character of this franchise. He was so good, such a big hope for Gotham, a white knight. He's so likable. The hero who doesn't wear a mask, which makes him brave but also extremely vulnerable. And of course the Joker had to destroy him and corrupt him because of it. By taking Rachel from him. He switched up the adresses on purpose because he knew Batman would wanna save Rachel, but he saved Harvey instead. The Joker didn't want to kill Harvey, but Rachel was expendable so it would drive Harvey mad. And somehow the Joker even managed to put the blame on Gordon, so Harvey went after Gordon instead of him. Even though he was more responsible. But Harvey was suspicious of Gordon's department from the beginning. He even mentioned to Gordon that Wuertz and Ramirez were corrupt scum. And those are the ones who betray him later on. It's such a tragedy. Also he's turning Batman into the villain because he doesn't turm himself in - and Harvey does it for him, which makes him even more of a target. The Joker is a genius and the ending of this movie is actually really dark. Because he DID win, he wanted to corrupt a hero and he actually succeeded. And now they have to cover it up by lying to the public.

Nina

I love your reactions - I love your reviews. ❤❤❤ But one thing: I do wish you would also mention the directors more often. They are the ones who made the film after all. I don't think you mentioned Nolan once. I would like to know what you think of his style, the type of movies he makes or if you can see similarities in his movies. Because I think you have some experience now, since this it the 4th movie you've seen from him. (Interstellar, Batman Begins, The dark knight, The Prestige) ❤ Also: Wally Pfister's cinematopgraphy is absolutely stunning. And so are the practical effects and stunts - the heist at the beginning, the truck flip, the hospital blowing up, the chase with the batpod and so many more. It looks so great 😍 I've seen it in theaters more than 10 times 😁

Richard

Looking forward to this new format! Thanks so much for your efforts to continually tweak the user experience, we appreciate it! Great film of course, my only issue is that I think a person as crazy as the Joker would not be able to control and maneuver events that perfectly. The thread I ponder on (which I assume you will mention in your commentary) is how this is a deep look into sociopathic insanity, and specifically how it can drag the "good guys" into that circle of insanity and what it does to them and makes them become. My favorite scene is actually the 2 ferries not blowing each other up - it showed the truth of humanity that the Joker didn't want to acknowledge. I looooved Bat-Pixel. The actress who played Rachel lives just down the road from where I'm working today. One of my friends did the roof on her house. This came out the same year as Iron Man, so two very different presentations of the superhero genre, and both equally valid and high-quality.

Nina

I love Hans Zimmer's theme for the Joker. It's so unsettling. He's using razor blades on the strings of cellos 😰😰

Simon

Lets gooo!! Looking forward to watching this evening.

Nina

Jim Gordon is my favorite character. Gary plays him with so much warmth. I love him so much. 🥰

KJ

The more times you watch TDK the more you realise the Joker is the ultimate deceiver and unreliable narrator. He tells a different back story to his scars each time. He lies about the location of Harvey & Rachel to make Batman go one way instead of the other. He disguises hostages as clowns and his thugs as doctors. With this in mind, we can't trust the speech he gives to Harvey about chaos is true, either - he could be telling the lies Harvey needs to hear to go over the edge. He may also be lying to the citizens & the criminals on the ferries: they could actually have the trigger to their own demise, because the Joker is a proven liar. Is he an agent of chaos without a plan - or is he actually a diabolocal genius who has planned out everything? Aaron Eckhart's performance is outshone by Heath Ledger's and it's a shame because he is outstanding in showing his fall from grace. Why this movie didn't make him an absolute superstar is a crime.

Joe Blankenship

"A Knight's Tale" and "10 Things I Hate About You" for more Heath Ledger!

PG Modehouse

I highly recommend playing the Batman Arkham games and maybe checking out Batman The Animated Series! You'll meet many of the famous Batman villains, The Rogues Gallery, some of whom you've already seen, like The Scarecrow, Two-Face, and of course his canonical arch-nemesis, The Joker. Much like Superman, there's many different iterations of Batman, I tend to be partial to the noir heavy stories that lean into his moniker The World's Greatest Detective.

Fred Aczon

Batman ties Spider-man for having the best Villain's rogues gallery of any superhero. For context, when 1989 Batman came out, Jack Nicholson's Joker was so iconic that it was a hard act to follow. Any future performance was compared to his. When the news of "pretty boy" Heath Ledger was cast, everybody hated it. Then he proved everyone wrong, and blew everyone one away with his unique, grounded, layered performance. He was frightening, unhinged, chaotic, and funny, which is the essence of the Joker. And now Heath's is the benchmark that people will compare future Joker performances to. There's a multitude of reasons why this movie is regarded so fondly. This transcended people's expectations of a superhero movie, this was an epic crime drama.

Joe

Good list. Killgrave and Kingpin also round out that top 5 for me.

La Baanga

I've never been more tempted to call off early just to watch a patreon video. It's difficult to describe the absolute fever pitch of the hype surrounding this movie when it was releasing. Word of mouth was building about Ledger's transformative performance even prior to his untimely passing. And to think that Iron Man released that same summer, kicking off the MCU.

PG Modehouse

When Joker says "We're destined to do this forever," it was meta-commentary. Batman and The Joker really are in an eternal adversarial dance throughout the comics over the past 85 years, since Joker's appearance in Batman issue #1 in 1940. Superman has Lex Luthor, and the Batman has the Joker.

CJgutierrez

love the reaction and LOVE the new video format!

SultanOfSwing

Can't say enough how much i love the new format!

Richard

I just got done watching, she did mention the direction specifically and how good it was.

PaulieXP

And yet, the best joker is Luke Sywalker himself

Nina

I prefer Rachel and Harvey over Rachel and Bruce. They had great chemistry and it just felt right. Which is why it's so heartbreaking that we lose them both 😭 I'm also a total mess everytime I watch this movie. It's so heavy, so well written, so much depth. It just gets under my skin. It really deserves the number 4 spot on imdb ❤

20 16

Did you know before this role heath ledger was known for roles in romance films and when he was announced as joker people dis liked it . Funny how he is usually seen as the best love action joker.

Nina

yes I've heard it. 👍 But I meant a bit more in depth.

ChopChop

Thank you for doing a full watch along! That made it a lot easier for me. And the reaction was amazing, as usual. What a movie huh!

Maxim Marbach

Great reaction! Can't wait for Dark Knight Rises :D

Matt Rowland

Kali, I remember seeing this in 2008 with three of my friends, and we were at the first showing of the day on that Friday. We walked out, with crowds lined up to get into the next one, and we were trying to process what we had just watched. All four of us were talking softly back and forth, and started asking the question: "did we just watch the best movie in cinema history?" I took my wife the following night and focused more on things I may have missed. It was an experience that I seldom have while watching a movie. I'm different than most people, I actually prefer the third film in the trilogy over this one, but that doesn't diminish this one's importance to the industry or it's role in history.

Matt Rowland

It's #3 right now. Godfather, Godfather 2 and Dark Knight all seem to move around from time to time.

Marty McGee

It was also heartbreaking knowing Heath could never be back as Joker.

pinkdino99

The Dark Knight was a top 5 movie of mine for many many years. The unease with the Joker scenes comes from the Hans Zimmer score. He uses two sustained violin lines moving in opposite directions holding one note each and sliding portamento up and down the scale. It sets my teeth on edge. And then you get to Ledger whom fans absolutely crucified before seeing the film (oh he's far too pretty for The Joker !) I remember distinctly the moment I realised I was watching something special is where he is with the mob bosses and says "A guy like me..." and just breaks off his sentence. All those little ticks and mannerisms. And his "LOOK AT ME !" line is absolutely chilling. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Kali you have the best jump scares in any reaction ! The entire cinema was out of their seats in that moment, popcorn FLEW ! That scare (can the real Batman please stand up) comes from absolutely nowhere. And that is the magic of Joker in this film. Because funny enough... it is not a Joker movie. It is a movie about the mob and Dent's eventual fall from grace. The Joker is incidental and completely chaotic. One scene I love is the party scene where Bruce goes out to the balcony and throws his glass of champagne over the side, as he does not drink... only appears to. Then Joker turns up and throws the champers out of a glass before pretending to drink it. They are opposites, but also so alike. Kali, I know you are a car nerd (have you watched Fast & Furious yet ?) The motorcycle was then the most expensive sports bike, an Augusta MV, notoriously unreliable... but oh so sexy ! One thing that annoys me so much is Gordon's son. Yeah in the books he did have a son, but all James was good for was becoming a villain. Gordon was far closer with his daughter Barbara Gordon. You know... BATGIRL ! More Heath Ledger - Lords of Dogtown - the (awesome) origin story of skateboarding - The Patriot - Mel Gibson Civil War epic

Nina

oh wow! The shawshank redemption at number 1 will probably never change 😂

KJ

Great watch along. Every time Joker spoke or acted at length on screen, you were literally stunned silent. Can't recall the last time a character did that to you - perhaps never before. And couldn't agree with you more about Batman's sacrifice.

Robin Holmes

There's a line I'm paraphrasing in Batman: Arkham Living Hell, where Jeremiah Arkham, the director, is lying in bed and gets distressed he has no phone alerts. He says something like, "The Riddler says he has a hostage and will kill XXX if we don't release him, or Scarface is trying to plan a heist or blah blah blah" but the line that always stuck with me is "The Joker got access to the cleaning supplies, he's going to kill us all!" The Joker is terrifying.

Nina

For comic book villains yeah. But outside of that it would definitely be Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, Hans Gruber in Die Hard, Amon Göth in Schindler's List, Stansfield in Léon or Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the lambs. I think they are way better than Thanos or Killmonger. But Heath as The Joker is high on my list as well.

Steve Mercier

One of the greatest comic book movies ever...that statement feels kind of dumb, actually. Whatever. One of the greatest movies ever. There. Better.

pinkdino99

I could not get on board with Maggie Gyllenhaal in this. She would be fine if she was in batman Begins, but her character was different to how Holmes played her. Holmes seemed to have more fire.

pinkdino99

And then we get Jared Leto !

Kristoffer

Heath Ledger made one of the best performances in not just superhero movie history, but in movie history! And because he did this, Aaron Eckharts preformance as Harvey Den/Two Face gets overshadowed alot! But i really want to appreciate his preformance and the execution of the character Two Face in this movie, not just when he became Two Face, but also before. I know that me and other Batman fans who knew about Batman lore before this movie understood some very subtle, awesome and also heart wrenching forshadowings, in this movie. At Harveys fundrasier Bruce after complementing Harvey says: "And look at this FACE, this is the FACE of Gothams bright future..." And after while speaking to Rachel, Bruce says "Gotham needs a hero with a FACE." When you already know whats coming for Harvey as a Batman fan, watching these scenes are like torture instead of sweet moments.... Cudos to Aaron Eckhart what a preformance!

pinkdino99

Good shout with Spidey's rogues.

pinkdino99

Some people really do not focus on directors. It takes a while of being a cinephile before we start asking those kind of questions.

pinkdino99

If anyone ever fancies doing a Michael Caine impression, his "I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine" is perfect.

Kristoffer

My favorite thing Spider-Man and Batman has taught me. Spider-Man has taught me, that whatever happens in your life, no matter how tough of a position you find yourself in, you HAVE to keep going. You have to pick yourself up and do whats responsible. Batman has taught me, that no matter what anyone says or thinks about you, always do whats right. Even if everyone is gonna disagree with you, even if everyone is gonna hate you, stay true to whats good.

KamikazeCDN

I absolutely love this movie for so many reasons, it's honestly impossible to list them all. But it truly is fantastic from start to finish. It gives more of the character that is Gotham City. It further showcases the best parts of Batman, refusing to kill Joker multiple times and taking the fall. And then just all around great performances by the cast. They also didn't do the thing Hollywood often tries to do with forcing an origin story. The Joker doesn't technically have a definitive origin story, he doesn't even have a true real name in the main timeline for the comics. The closet we have is from The Killing Joke and in that he has a line that's like “Something like that happened to me, you know…I’m not exactly sure what it was. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another…If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!". They did exactly that with this movie and how his scars story was different each time. I remember back when Health Ledger was cast as The Joker I wasn't sure since I really only knew him from movies like A Knight's Tale (2001) or 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). Both are enjoyable movies but so different from The Dark Knight and the character of The Joker. However from the first moment I knew he was meant for the role. He genuinely sells the chaotic nature of The Joker., to the point you question if it's even an act. The "magic trick" followed up by how his face changes and the response to when the guy calls him crazy near the start is so truly intimidating. All his mannerisms and body language were so perfect for who The Joker is at his core as well. Even something as small as when he grabs the glass of champagne and spills it everywhere before trying to drink it really sells the fact that The Joker is everything most of us aren't. For all his plans there often also isn't any forethought when he does something. He was terrifying in the best way possible. There is even fun fact type of stuff that made the performance even better. The licking he was constantly doing started because the prosthetic scars would move and he was keeping them in place. He just ended up adapting that into a full character trait. If I remember correctly Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel) was terrified of him as well during the party scene. If you watch it back when he starts getting into her face there is a moment she glances off "screen", apparently looking at Nolan for a cut because she was scared but then just resorted to closing her eyes most of the time. All in all, I love The Joker...he is my favourite villain across comics. He is just so chaotic, so unpredictable...it makes the character so much more entertaining when you don't know what's coming. Heath Ledger is the best Joker we've had. Well, Mark Hamill (yes good old Luke) is also perfect but that's animated so I'm speaking strictly live action. Jack Nicholson was fun but that was back in '89 so the tone and design, it was certainly much more comic book but still good. Joaquin Phoenix was also great in The Joker (2019), I really enjoyed him in that role but that movie was...different. I don't want to say much more to avoid spoilers before you have a chance to watch yourself. (sorry for the wall of text again, I need to stop lol)

Farbod

I love this movie. That being said I actually like The Dark Knight Rises even more. But I also think T1>T2, Alien>Aliens.... Excited for this reaction.

Nina

I don't think Katie Holmes is a very good actress. And I don't buy her being a lawyer at all. She looks like a little girl. I prefer Maggie Gyllenhaal in every way, she seems sophisticated, I can take her seriously as a lawyer. And I like Rachel a lot more in this movie than in Batman Begins 🙂

Nina

Oh I think she has seen enough movies to share her opinion on that. You don't have to be a "cinephile" for that. At least in my opinion. 😉

kaliwali

RIP for sure. I've only seen him in this but now I really need to check out more of his work so I can be sad that such a treasure has passed.. 🤍

kaliwali

LOL Happy Friday! I hope you get to enjoy it soon!

kaliwali

YES! I gotta say he bumped down my number 1 which was actually Zemo. So mine now goes Joker, Zemo, Thanos 🔥

kaliwali

It was everything I thought and so much more!! Hope you enjoy when you can! Happy Friday ✨

kaliwali

Oh man. That sounds VERY emotional but so so so well deserved. He was incredible in this movie! The emotions he made me feel were like nothing I've ever really experienced before from a villain. Definitely up there with Zemo and Thanos for me. I heard about Heath Ledger when it happened, but never thought about it too much since I didn't know who he was. Just that his death was tragic and untimely. I need to check out more of his work now and after seeing his performance here, I understand why so many were devastated by his accident 🤍

kaliwali

Heath Ledger was 100000% on another planet. I went into this expecting Batman epics and instead got blasted with a villain that actually took over the entire movie in so many ways. Not that Batman wasn't amazing in this! But wow, Heath/Joker was just so incredible! What a performance!! I definitely need to check out more Heath Ledger films now. I have 10 Thing I Hate About You and Knight's Tale currently, but I'll add Brokeback Mountain as well!

kaliwali

Glad you enjoy the format change! ✨

kaliwali

I definitely need to watch more Heath Ledger after this because WOW 🔥

kaliwali

I love that so much! I hope you enjoy!! Let me know what new perception you've discovered this time 👀

kaliwali

I get what you mean! He was so captivating in this movie omg!!

Nina

yes! Since I already asked for more romance movies - Brokeback Mountain is a beautiful love story and Heath is wonderful in it 💝

kaliwali

I noticed the smacking/licking of his lips a ton, but WOW so crazy that it was for that purpose as well lol. It's always fun learning behind the scenes facts of what went on during filming. Heath Ledger was absolutely incredible in this 🔥

kaliwali

"The hero who doesn't wear a mask" EXACTLY. He really is so tragic. Watching him succumb to the darkness was gutting. The Joker picked apart at every last bit of him until he finally gave into it all. Such an incredible story, but tragic nonetheless.

kaliwali

I did give my respects to Nolan a bit in the end there! Once I finish up his trilogy I'm sure I'll have more to say about the entirety of it 🤍

Nina

okay 💖

kaliwali

I'm glad you're enjoying the new format! And I have to agree a bit on the Joker, but then again I've also seen insane people do even more insane things. They're capable of thinking up such twisted and mind-bending ideas that actually work because any normal human couldn't fathom thinking in that way. I didn't touch too much on insanity in my outro. Only because I've done that once during a playthrough and got absolutely blasted for it. We all are a little insane on the inside if you think about it. But if you succumb to it, if you let the darkness take over, that's when it becomes true chaos. And yes 100% they can drag the "good guys" down into that whole with them. Misery and insanity love company. I loved the two ferries scene too! The way the Joker's smug look fell apart at the thought that good people do actually exist. Because YES, that is the truth of humanity in the end. And it's hard for evil people to swallow that not everybody thinks the way they do. And that's awesome that you live so close to that actress! Very cool!! (And Bat-Pixel was not amused or happy with my idea LOL)

kaliwali

Yes, EXACTLY! That's why I freaked out and said "That's not true!" when he tried to convince Batman that he was the only one not being deceptive. The only one telling the truth and showing all of his cards. He's never been truthful. Everything he does, says, and portrays is a lie. And very interesting all the way down to the ferries as well! That maybe blowing up one another is actually blowing up themselves because the Joker... Is a Joker without fail 😅🔥 He just wants to watch the world burn. And I walked away wondering the same exact question. Agent of chaos that everything works out for because everything is just so insane that it ends up working perfectly? Or diabolical genius that lies through his teeth in order to trick others into his master plan? Hmm. I also have to agree about Aaron Eckhart's performance! Heath Ledger was just on fire here lol.

kaliwali

Definitely need to watch those next!

KJ

🤮

KJ

I'm really looking forward to what you'll think of some upcoming villains in your Odyssey 😁

McShades

When it came time to film this movie Kattie Homes started dating Tom Cruise and he was a bit of a control freak with her, he didn't want her doing this movie and on another one of her movies "Thank you for not Smoking", he insisted the Director remove her nude scene from the movie. As much as I love Tom Cruise in his movies, he's a bit of a weirdo off screen.

McShades

Batman Begins 8/10, The Dark Knight 10/10, The Dark Knight Rises 8/10.... All 3 films are amazing but it defiantly peaked with The Dark Knight thanks to Heath Ledger's acting, he was suppose to be in the 3rd movie also but with his death they had to rewrite the story with Bane being the villain. Ledger was so talented... If you ever want to watch a lighter movie of his, give "A Knights Tale (2001)" a watch

The Amazing Webhead

Good reaction! This movie is probably my second favorite film in general. I remember seeing it for the first time in theaters when it came out. Good times. You met Harvey Dent aka Two Face & you met Batman’s main villain & arch nemesis: The Joker. Joker is arguably the best villain in comic history or the top 2. He’s like the king of comic villains & Heath Ledger played him so good. Joker in the comics & other universes can be dark/twist in one story or goofy/over the top. He is unpredictable. Batman & Joker probably have the most iconic rivalry in comic history. The line where Joker said “you & I are destined to do this forever” is a meta Easter egg to the fact that they been enemies in different universes/adaptations for almost 100 years in irl lol. The whole thing with his relationship with Batman in the lore is Joker sees him as the closest thing to a friend in his own twisted way. But it’s more of an obsession tbh. Joker sees Bruce like a kindred spirit. Both men became who they are because of Gotham’s corruption. Joker’s origins in the comics is never clear but one thing that is true is he experienced a really bad day that turned him insane. He doesn’t know Batman’s identity nor would he care but he sees he went through a bad day (referencing losing his parents). It’s why he doesn’t want to kill him. He enjoys the cat & mouse game they have. Hence why in the film he says “you’re too much fun” or “you complete me.” Joker is created to be the antithesis to Batman. They’re two sides of the same coin. One represent Justice while the other is chaos. Joker is comedy & Bruce is tragedy. Joker’s goal in the comics is to have Batman break his No kill rule to prove his point that “one bad day” can break anyone. In doing that, he either kills or traumatizes Bruce’s love ones but even with all that, Bruce still won’t kill him because if he did, Joker would win.

The Amazing Webhead

If you want some good Batman stories featuring the Joker, I highly recommend “The Killing Joke” which tells his origin story or a possible one cause Joker’s known to be an unreliable narrator. “The Last Laugh”, “Death in the family”, or try the Arkham games as they do show more of the relationship between him & Batman.

Danny

This movie is so frantic. I swear it hardly has any scenes that last more than 30 seconds before a cut. And half the time it's cutting between 2 or 3 different things happening at the same time. It's like Joker's fractured mind is directing the story. it's so manic and unsettling. A real masterpiece!

eladrin22

59:22 - that facial expression XD

M1 Maz

This one was so dark and heavy in ways that I never expected a superhero movie to be! It all felt like a war of ideas. The concept was definitely highlighted in the previous film (and very much so in V for Vendetta) but this one took it to an entirely new level. And showed how much power the concept of an idea and what it represents holds compared to just the man behind it. Chaos waging war with hope and bravery. And how sacrifices must be made of oneself to preserve the ideas you stand for Joker was horrifying as a villain. Previous to watching this film I've always felt the more crazy bad guys in superhero / comic book movies had a little bit of over-the-top silliness to them too, which I really don't mind in those films. But here, the Joker truly embodied the agent of chaos. And you said it right as I was thinking it too - that he's so scary because he's so unpredictable. Literally *nothing* was off the table for him, and he showed that time and time again. And Hans Zimmer's themes for him set the tone so perfectly. I don't think I've heard such dark and tense scores from him before, and I loved it here. Can't wait for the next one!

Other Chris

I’m going to watch this later tonight and I can only imagine your reactions to the scenes I’m thinking of….But I’m reading comments and I just had to drop in and jump on the bandwagon in adding a knights tale to your watch list. I hope to see it on a poll soon! I think it would be a great watch for you!

JoneZ

I have never met a person that didnt like this movie, glad you enjoyed it on all the levels the rest of us did, it is indeed mind blowing. Great reaction to one of the best movies ever made really.

Wil Castillo

The video format was good. The movie reaction was good. The choice of movies have been good. This has been, by far, the best place to hang out and watch movies!

Paul Wright

I remember seeing this movie in theatres off a recommendation from a co-worker, with the last Batman film I saw wasn't Batman Begins, but Batman & Robin(I saw Begins afterwards, unfortunately), but this film(and Iron Man) changed my life on superhero films. Your reaction to this was phenomenal, you caught all the twists and turns of this film. Heath Ledger was a tour-de-force in this film, but everyone did a great job in their roles. I cannot wait to see your reaction to Rises next week, and eventually tackle the Superman movies when you can. So thankful for this channel.

This movie is definitely one of my favorite superhero movies. I saw this opening night with a friend. Two days before the movie released, I had a car hit my driver's side mirror and snap it off on a freeway. When that scene popped up my buddy just looked at me and laughed. Very insignificant scene, but it's a memory I have associated with this move. Glad you enjoyed this movie. Heath Ledger's Joker is still my favorite live action iteration. Although it's a game suggestion, I highly recommend playing the Arkham series games now that you are getting into the Batman lore.

If you're allowed to put the full movie video and audio in the watch along video, that makes it pretty darn convenient. But I usually don't have trouble finding my own copy. Everything is findable.

Epic reaction to an epic movie Kali! I was definitely trying to downplay my excitement for you to watch this one. I didn’t want to add to all the hype you must have been getting leading up to this film. I was afraid your expectations might have been built up too much. I’m happy to see that it wasn’t The Joker in this film is one of the great villains! Yes, he’s insane. But also insanely smart. He planned everything to a tee From the bank robbery at the beginning, to Rachel and Harvey’s kidnapping, the two ships, all the way to Harvey’s downfall. His understanding of human nature. And how people would react. Planning everything 5-6 moves ahead is truly impressive! This intelligence, along with his insanity and desire for chaos, make him truly a scary villain. And Heath played him so well! Seeing this is your first Heath Ledger film, I highly recommend A Knight’s Tale (2001) if you want to see him in a role on the other end of the spectrum. Although completely different to this film, I think you would enjoy it Can’t wait for the 3rd and final installment of this Trilogy!

Favorite line in the entire movie (@ 59:30): "Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan... is to blackmail this person?" "Good luck!" 🤣

Firstly, I would like to say that your commentary was excellent, and you were most certainly receptive to the primary sticking points of what this film was asking. I say, "asking", because the movie somehow manages to toe the line between "saying" and "questioning", whilst simultaneously making strong statements from a variety of viewpoints. After this viewing, my prevailing thought is that it is almost impossible for me to talk and think about this film without talking and thinking about FILM, in general. There is a magic to this movie that withstands the legitimate criticism of its makings.  The Dark Knight has been both lauded and picked apart, then lauded again, for over 17 years.  We know its triumphs, we know its failings, and yet, no matter how many times I re-watch it, it has its way with me from the opening scene, all the way to the credits. I've listened to several film professors talk about the differences between plot and story, and about the delicate balance which must be struck between the two in order for a film to really coalesce into a digestible cinematic experience. While I don't want to say anything as hyperbolic as, "The Dark Knight transcends that notion", I can't help but think that, in some ways, it kinda rejects it. The more times you watch this, the more you notice those, "Wait a minute, now", moments; but, even though you can peer through the mechanics of the film-making, the dreamlike thrust of the story pulls you over the humps of the clumsily assembled plot. It's like the Hitchcock "Refrigerator Test": It's not the job of the filmmaker to make a movie which stands up under scientific scrutiny; the movie only needs you to be onboard with it for as long as it is on-screen. If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, wondering, "Wait, why didn't Batman go back up to the penthouse where Joker still had everyone held hostage?", well, welcome to watching movies. If you ask yourself that question, and many others, on the very first viewing, then the movie hasn't done its job too well. The strange thing about this movie, though, is that I know all of these things going into it, and the film still captures me completely. On one day, I might say that this is a film about the battle for the soul of a dying city. On a different day, I might say it's a movie about causality and duality. I don't think I really know what this movie is about. I just love how it's about it, to paraphrase Roger Ebert.

The Batman and The Dark Knight, the two best superhero/comic book films, both transcend the genre. Glad Heath won the Oscar and other awards for this but sad he was not alive to see the film and the award. Batman roles will get u awards whether it's Oscars, Emmy's, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG, and more. Joaquin Pheonix also got an Oscar and more awards for playing Joker in the 2019 Joker film that you should watch. Colin Farrell as The Penguin and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone/Gigante in The Penguin show also got awards like Emmy's, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG for their performances. I can see Robert Pattinson being the first hero and Batman to get nominated for awards like an Oscar after The Batman - Part II. That film will get nominated a lot, like the first film, The Dark Knight, Joker, and The Penguin.

Batman and Superman came before all the heroes, the two most iconic characters with Batman being the most popular and best ever and Superman being THE most iconic...Wonder Woman and Spider-Man behind them, John Stewart's Green Lanterns and Black Panther for me up there for me💪🏾...DC has better top quality films, shows, games, comics than Marvel, it is great you are gettin into it. After this trilogy u should watch Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022) starring Robert Pattinson, and then the Colin Farrell starring The Penguin (2024) show that Reeves and him produced as well as Lauren LeFranc who wrote the show and signed a deal with HBO to develop more from that film and others. Both acclaimed on all fronts with box office/viewership, awards, and more. That Batman world is on another level when it comes to "Cinema" as a film fanatic even outside of comic book projects myself. Superman (1978) would be a great watch after as an introduction to Supes and then Superman II, then watch James Gunn's Superman (2025). Perfect Batman and Superman, I hope Matt Reeves and James Gunn come together and have Robert Pattinson's Batman in the new DCU...I hope they are playing us and Rob shows up in something like the R-rated body horror Clayface film next year for The Batman villain because Reeves is producing that too because it was his idea to want to make the film and Mike Flanagan wrote a great script I already know, it is heavily based off of Batman The Animated Series' Feat of Clay episodes in the 90s...Reeves and Gunn both casted the Clayface actor Tom Rhys Harries together...Matt Reeves still has his solo Batman films and spinoff shows like The Penguin in Gotham and he runs the Gotham side of the DCU, while Gunn runs everything else and diving into Gotham and working with Matt here and there which is already happening for an animated film called Dynamic Duo about the two Robins Dick Grayson and Jason Todd...Reeves and Gunn are both producing that film and it releases 6/30/2028 but we still do not know if it is connected to the live action Batman yet, because characters can go from animation to live action to games to comics in any way in the DCU...the difference in tone is what would make it so good if David Corenswet's Superman and Rob's Batman meet. The Justice League films would break records. Reeves still has The Batman Part II releasing on 10/1/2027 and other shows from Gotham like The Penguin S2 maybe, Catwoman, Arkham Asylum, and other shows could still come and obviously The Batman Part III film. A Batman movie titled Brave and the Bold is another film in writing as well but we will see what happens with that. The Superman sequel titled Man of Tomorrow releases 7/9/2027. Obviously there are other projects u should watch like The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker S1, and Blue Beetle, all of which are not fully canon to the DCU but necessary and great watches...and then Creature Commandos S1 and Peacemaker S2. Gunn makes sure it is not confusing, especially as u watch. The upcoming DCU releases next year are Lanterns S1, Supergirl, and Clayface. A new Wonder Woman film is being written right now and might release in March of 2028 for Women's History Month, and I can't wait to see who they cast. Batman is so iconic an R-rated lower budget solo film about his villain Joker had a spinoff film in 2019 made by Todd Phillips that Martin Scorsese helped on that made over a billion dollars and won many awards, with Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. One of the most profitable films ever and the first and best R-rated billion dollar hit. That film is one of my favorited and is not connected to anything by the way, it is its own thing. I am more of a DC fan but I am also a Marvel fan, and I see the DCU passing the MCU, it is better currently than what the MCU is right now too.

The score by Hans Zimmer in this is great, but wait until you hear the score and music in The Batman from Michael Giacchino.

LeSteeler

Gotham is located in New Jersey, but Nolan filmed mostly in Chicago and Pittsburgh for the last one...Matt Reeves for The Batman filmed in the UK, Chicago, and the team in New York for The Penguin.

Heath Ledger is absolutely incredible as the Joker. It’s one of those performances where I just don’t see the actor at all – I only see the Joker himself. He manages to be both funny and terrifying all in one, not just with his delivery, but with his facial acting too. He just dominates every scene he’s in. The Joker is the perfect arch-nemesis for Batman, as they really are complete opposites. Batman is all about order and justice, while the Joker is all about chaos; Batman is dark and quiet, while the Joker is loud and colourful. And as the Joker says, they are destined to do this forever, as neither will kill the other for their own reasons. There’s an episode of the animated series, where Batman appears to have died, and the Joker is upset, because without Batman to fight, committing crimes is no fun anymore (or, as he puts it, “Without Batman, crime has no punchline.”) That said, while Heath Ledger is obviously the standout, I have to say, Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent was incredible too. He plays both parts of the character really well – the honest, straight-as-an-arrow white knight, Harvey Dent, and the crazed, vengeful maniac, Two-Face. That said, I think his best moments are before the transformation, when you start to see hints of the monster he will become, like when he’s threatening the Joker’s lackey in that alley. Seeing him on the edge between the two personalities there really demonstrates his acting skills. Two-Face, in most iterations, has generally been portrayed as one of the more tragic of Batman’s villains, and I thought they pulled it off really well here (though I will admit, when I first saw this, I was kind of disappointed they killed him off here – I thought they were going to carry him over to the next movie). Also, I have to say, one bit of criticism I have is that the whole thing of Batman taking the fall for Harvey’s murders, while it is very powerful and symbolic, and perfectly fits the themes of the movie… also doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. Like, why not just blame the Joker for those deaths? I really don’t think anyone’s going to question that, lol.

Malcolm Ferguson

Oh, also, one more detail I love - The Joker says to that cop, "In their last moments, people show you who they really are." And what does the Joker do as he falls to (what he thinks is) his death? He laughs hysterically.

Ricardo de Leon

This film is still an emotional ride and one of the most cerebral Batman films, a signature of both Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan (Fallout / Westworld). They co-wrote and collaborated on many of these films together. There have been many iconic Jokers, but Heath Ledger was one of a kind and improvised much of the performance (including the hospital scene outside when the trigger was delayed). When Joaquin Phoenix was recognized for his own role, he paid tribute to Ledger and his late brother, as they were all friends growing up. (I'm glad others are suggesting A Knight's Tale, such an iconic cast who have since become legendary actors. Another film recommendation featuring an outstanding performance by Aaron Eckhart is the film "Thank you for Smoking").

FigLeaf Bicarbonate

It was such a great watch and reaction. Also I think I actually prefer the new format.

Mike G

I wanted to say thank you for the unedited version. I was waiting for this reaction and was struggling to find my own version. Wasn't until a day after you submitted that I noticed I didnt need one lol.

kaliwali

Jack Nicholson's Joker!?? Oh man. Now I really have to see those Batman films even if they are considered not 'as great' as these. I gotta see him in that role!! I love that everyone didn't warm up to Heath Ledger being Joker LOL. Jokes on them (pun intended) because he was so incredible in this wow.

kaliwali

Nice!! Glad you love the new format here :) I know it's getting more and more difficult for people to find movies/shows. Even for me I usually end up renting everything which I know can be costly.

kaliwali

Apparently I really need to check out A Knight's Tale now 🙀 I'd love to see Heath Leger in another role after this performance omg. And I believe "Thank You for Smoking" is also on my list but I'll double check and add it!

kaliwali

So I was wondering the same thing about Batman taking the fall. I love that it is powerful and symbolic and something he would 100% do. But they could have very easily pinned it all on the Joker LOL. Oh well, makes for a good ending! I didn't see Heath Ledger AT ALL. This was my first movie with him so all I've seen are movie posters or the random meme of him I think from 10 Things I Hate About You where he's dancing lol. But I didn't see him as the Joker for even a second. He did such an incredible job! I can't wai tto see more movies that he's in!

kaliwali

Ahh I thought I saw some hints of Chicago! Pretty cool that they used a bit of a mix of cities so it didn't look too much like any particular one

kaliwali

Apparently I really need to check out A Knight's Tale next! And I honestly can't wait to after seeing Heath Ledger's performance in this.. wow, just WOW. I'm really exited to watch the final installment too this week!! I've loved these movies so much so far!

kaliwali

More and more creators on Patreon are going with this format so I thought I'd try it out! Obviously if there are issues I will stop. But for now, I'm glad it is more convenient! I am also still linking the YouTube version where you have your own copy in the Description box so if you like that way more, it'll always be there as well

kaliwali

Ahh that's a crazy coincidence 🤣 I'm always jealous of you guys that went to the theatre when all of these epic films were coming out. I was never into the movies or going to the movie theatre, so I only started going recently and they are to see Disney movies mainly with my daughter like Moana 2 and Lilo and Stitch LOL. But it really is an awesome experience!

kaliwali

I'm so excited to finish out this amazing trilogy this week! It's been so much more than I ever thought 🔥🩷

kaliwali

A Knight's Tale will be coming after seeing this comment section! Shew! I will probably love it with all the recommendatiosn lol

kaliwali

Now that you've said it, YES! it does feel soooo frantic which is honestly genius considering we're dealing with the Joker in this 🔥

kaliwali

Ahh, thank you! I'll add those!

kaliwali

I love the wall of text so never apologize haha! I loooove that Rachel was actually terrified, because she definitely looked it!! It's so cool to see how much went on behind the scenes to get what we got here. Makes going back and rewatching pretty awesome because I can look out for those things haha! So thank you for sharing!

kaliwali

Yes!!! That's why I love both of them so much, too 🩷🔥

kaliwali

I think in some of these jumpscares lately I've actually gotten height off my chair 😭🤣🤣🤣 So awesome how movies can make you literally jump out of your pants LOL I haven't seen any of the Fast & Furious movies yet! I'd looooooove to watch some and I think maybe this summer we may hop into a few? But no set in stone plans yet. I haven't seen anyone recommend that Heath Ledger film yet so I'll add it! And I've had my eye on The Patriot for awhile ( I haven't seen any Mel Gibson films yet and I'd love to watch some eventually! ) So thank you for the recommends! But YES this movie was absolutely epic. All of the performances in it were so well done! Literally every single one. And I don't think I've felt so scared of a villain I wanted to just cry before 🤣🔥 Can't wait to watch the final one of the trilogy this week!

kaliwali

Oh Also! I did get your package!!!! I can't wait to open it ✨

kaliwali

That's wild considering how WELL he did in this role! Everyone was so wrong about him haha

Trevor Go

It was probably said already, but Heath Ledger was not a popular pick to play the Joker. He was known for Knight's Tale, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Brokeback Mountain. Give those a watch, and his performance here will be even more amazing. I think you would get a kick out of watching earlier Batman films before diving into Matt Reeves' version. In TV and movies, Batman wasn't always played this dark. I think you would enjoy the transition.

Justyn

Wot the heck i didn't get a noti for this one? I was waiting for it 😭😭

kaliwali

patreon be rude like that!? 😮‍💨🤣

pinkdino99

Fast & Furious... as a car nerd you will be fine. The first couple are fun, but they take a dramatic down turn in FF3 & 4. But you are rewarded for slogging through as FF5-7, the best in the series bring everyone together in absolutely spectacular and jaw dropping fashion. They are fan faves so everyone will love seeing your reaction, and you are so right... they are summer movies (they get a bit sweaty !)

Fred Aczon

You should definitely check out Batman 89 sometime. There's plenty of cheesy fun to be had, and Jack Nicholson was definitely having fun with his performance. The score is still pretty iconic, and most importantly, it made Batman cool again.

Giancarlo Gasparin

The Joker's misdirection during this entire movie was so fun to watch. He told anyone who would listen that he's not really the planning type, while masterminding every aspect of his elaborate scheme. Knowing that Bruce would chose to save Rachel and switching her address with Harvey's was diabolical.

C. J. Ramirez

I miss heath , the joker kinda had him cause he had to be in a dark place to play joker

subete_wa

A little late to the party, but I would like to say that joker is my favorite Batman villain, which some people might think is a bit of a lame choice, given that he is Batman's "arch nemesis" but there's a reason that he is. He compliments Batman so well in so many ways. Jokers insanity is something he believes everyone shares, that deep down, everyone is like him, and all it takes is a little push to draw it out. And he's especially obsessed with proving this about Batman, who is objectively probably a little mentally ill. His lack of a backstory or alias really contributes to his character as well, making the audience speculate as to what could've made him this way or if he was born this way.

Ray

For law enforcement and security flashlights are standard equipment.

Ray

If I were Harvey I's ask Rachel, "ok, where is the 2nd safest place in Gotham City.
