Watching this movie for the first time felt like stepping into a parody that I thought would immediately sync with my wavelength.. but instead it kind of drifted in and out. Maybe I needed more 'mr. coffee' before watching the 'mr. radar' LOL. After loving, adoring and watching Young Frankenstein every year for many years now, I was expecting that same sharp, joyful chaos mixed with nonstop Star Wars inside jokes. But in my opinion, it didn't dive deep enough into the Star Wars lore to really be a parody of that epic franchise.Instead, the movie felt much more focused on poking fun at merchandising and the whole big-business machine around fandom. And I get why that's funny! But if I'm being honest, that joke has never landed for me and is a bit of a personal pet peeve.BUT even with my expectations of this one wobbling, I definitely enjoyed watching my favorite characters in Star Wars get roasted in that goofy Mel Brooks way. Everyone was very committed to the bit. Honestly, my favorite scene out of this entire movie wasn't even a Star Wars gag it was the Alien reference LOL. So thank you so much to the people warning me I needed to watch Aliens before this! I would have been so mad at myself for spoiling that plot twist! Thank you for hanging out with me during this awkward humor fest! Even though Spaceballs didn't sweep me away like I thought it would, I'm really grateful for the experience and it felt like such a goofy endcap to our sci-fi kick we've been on this entire year. Watching things with you all makes the journey feel more magical, even when the movie itself isn't a new favorite lol!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/tnU0Vm47-34I watched this on HBO Max

My favorite spoofs are usually things like Black Dynamite or Galaxy Quest, because the love the filmmakers have for the material they are parodying comes through. I've never gotten onboard with Spaceballs, primarily because it just comes across as cynical and joyless to me. What I get from this movie is, "Stars Wars is dumb, ha-ha". Just doesn't do it for me.

skz

Spaceballs is a classic but its not for everyone. In my opinion the Family Guy trilogy is a way better parody when it comes to the actual joke writing. There's also Fanboys which is a very good comedy about a group of friends who go on a road trip to steal Episode 1 before it comes out, that's probably my favorite not-Star Wars movie. I'm still not a big fan of all the severe merchandising though. There is a point where it gets abusive and many franchises are there right now.

Cindy Clarkson

If you know Star Trek the real good parody film is Galaxy Quest…

pinkdino99

Never been a huge fan of this one. Has some funny lines, but as you say... it does not maintain like some other comedies do. Try Blazing Saddles which definitely does maintain.

Joe

Totally agreed about Galaxy Quest. I’ve never seen Black Dynamite but maybe I should. I like it when it works as a movie on its own but also has funny references that lovers of the franchise recognize. Galaxy Quest is a love letter to Star Trek and its fandom. It’s also a fun space adventure movie and people love it even if they haven’t seen the material it honors. I have the same problem you do with Spaceballs and many of its parody peers.

pinkdino99

I think even if you don't know Star Trek, Galaxy Quest is essential.

pinkdino99

"Can we get someone from the actual miliary in here ?"

KJ

Some parodies end up being a product of their time and don't age well. Some jokes still hit but some just aren't funny in the modern day. Spaceballs is worth watching to say you've watched it but I'm quite indifferent to it. Some have mentioned Galaxy Quest and it's one of my favourite comedies because it satirises Sci Fi tropes without demeaning the fan base - and actually acknowledges how important fans are to franchise longevity.

KJ

I love Galaxy Quest. Still holds up so well.

Kevin Cavanaugh

I think if you saw this when it came out in 87 you’d feel different. I love it. I think it’s great but I’m old-school so

Joe Blankenship

Yeah, I definitely don't have the same nostalgia for this movie as other people my age. It's got a few funny bits, but overall, it feels so corny and lazy. One of Mel Brooks' worst.

Chris Truex

Perfectly valid opinions! Two things that are important for one aspect, though: Star Wars was a fairly novel thing in terms of merchandising. At least on the scale and variety of toys, accessories, etc. It was part of what sparked the explosion of film toys, etc, that would happen in the late 80s and 90s. So it was iconic in that aspect, hence the jokes. But, on a more SPECIFIC note, Mel Brooks asked George Lucas for his blessing for the movie (which he didn't need, per se, but it helped; for instance, Industrial Lights and Magic, Lucas' effects shop, did a lot of work on Spaceballs). Lucas loved the script but had one stipulation: Mel Brooks was not allowed to make merchandise. That's the other major reason for the merchandising joke. Brooks couldn't make merch in real life, so he put it in the movie.

Chris Truex

That aside, I love this movie because I grew up with it, but it's not one of Brooks' best. There are lots of great individual lines and references (Alien, etc) but it's a weaker core.

Chris Truex

Also? Thank you so much for being honest! It shows integrity, when some reactors will edit their reactions to make them pander to their audience

TheJoeKerr

Idk I never felt this movie was demeaning the fan base. I think of this movie as a love letter and ultimate form of flattery. Having George Lucas give his blessing along with use of his technology is a testament to how he knew Mel would do it justice. With merchandising being the running gag since they couldn’t sell any outside of the movie was so funny to me. Maybe since knowing that going in the first time I watched it gave me the different perspective.

SultanOfSwing

Glad you are an honest reactor. You don't have to like everything.

McShades

Yeah, I wasn't a huge fan of Spaceballs, i thought it was ok, but some of the humor was a miss for me, It probably didn't help that a lot of people overhyped it getting your expectations high. BTW, Mel Brooks (I think he's like 93) is making Spaceballs 2 The Search for more Money right now.

KamikazeCDN

I personally do enjoy this movie however I would never fault someone for not being totally into it. It's not exactly peak cinema, in fact I'd say it's pretty dumb lol. I think a lot of it is simply because of when it came out. At the time I believe only the OG trilogy and two smaller animated shows had come out. Star Wars was popular but it wasn't the giant it is now, the world was also different as well. But it makes the fact they are doing a sequel a bit interesting. It's not that a parody can't work in the modern era but one like this? Not so sure to be honest. Of course I say that like I was alive when this first came out when I am in fact a year younger than this movie lol. But I did watch it young, I think only The Phantom Menace from the prequels had released by the time I watched it. But I'm sure a lot of my enjoyment is nostalgia. And to be fair the whole merchandising gag is likely my least favourite of the gags in the entire film. You may enjoy a movie like Fanboys. Its not really a parody of Star Wars but Star Wars is a core plot point of it. It's more of a satire adventure comedy instead of a slapstick comedy. Oh, I think the books you're talking about were called Animorphs.

Wil Castillo

I'm looking forward to the next one, Spaceballs: The Search for More Money.

Dave Hill

Love your Millennium Falcon earrings! :)

Brad

We need to start warning you about other movie spoilers in movies. I didn't even think about PotA until halfway through..

Bernie Zwicky

I remember when Star Wars first came out…they really took merchandising off of a movie to a whole new level, which may be why they decided to poke a little fun at that. A couple of movie references that you might have missed was when the ship turned into a maid and Barf said it’s a transformer…They were referring to the relatively new movie franchise which started with an animated movie The Transformers (1986), but in 2007 they made a regular movie by the same name, which is actually a great movie, with lots of humor and action! Also, the guy who made all of the sounds with his voice, starred in the movie, Police Academy, where he used his talent to make for some very funny scenes…the movie is a great comedy that I think you would really enjoy!😊

M1 Maz

Even though this movie wasn't entirely my cup of tea, one of the things I've really liked about exploring all this media with you that's new to me is seeing all the pop-culture references they have today! For instance, I'm now realizing that Elon Musk must be a fan of this movie LOL. Okay hear me out - the fastest Tesla cars have the "Plaid" nameplate, and have a "Ludicrous" mode that makes them go extra fast. Considering that the Spaceball One went Plaid using ludicrous speed, I don't think that can be a coincidence haha

Farbod

Thats a shame. It might be a generational thing. I think its amazing. Still laugh and I have probably seen in over 20 times.

Maerandir Eldar

The whole merchandising thing wasn't making fun of the fanbase or the Star Wars cultural phenomenon, it was a direct jab at George Lucas himself... when Mel Brooks went to Lucasfilm to get the OK on the parody, George had two rules: 1) Lone Star couldn't look like Han Solo, which is why he's instead dressed as Indiana Jones, the other Lucasfilm character played by Harrison Ford, and 2) Brooks couldn't produce or sell any Spaceballs merchandise. The merchandising jokes were 100% him giving George the finger (he's said as much in interviews), and why the figures you saw onscreen were intentionally higher quality and better character likenesses than anything Kenner had put out up to that point for the Star Wars collection.

Anyone waiting for the sync along link, it's done uploading now! Sorry for the little delay. We went to a christmas tree lighting tonight 🎄✨ I uploaded some pics on Discord and Insta Story :)

I've always liked parts of this one very much (mostly Dark Helmet. Rick Moranis was on fire in this), but it definitely didn't have quite the same Marx Brothers-esque sense of irreverent chaos from his best years of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

Chris

I like, but don't love this movie (how I feel for most Mel Brooks, tbh)--Rick Moranis is fantastic, and the guy with the afro pick will never stop killing me. Sometimes, though, I feel like Mel Brooks needs to be reminded that the obvious joke isn't always a funny one (Snotty? Really?)... That said, never felt like he's taking shots at Star Wars for selling out, or at the fandom. Acknowledging that it's a profit play, and that Star Wars mech WAS ubiquitous, doesn't necessarily amount to an accusation that it's being done cynically. It would be if he were saying that there's been no attempt to make something good... but I don't think the joke is trying to say that here. I mean, I'm not a merch guy generally, but if you put Nemik's manifesto on something that's not kitschy, I WILL buy it.

Richard

Sorry you didn’t have more fun with this one Kali! Yes the humor is very broad and one has to be in a certain mood to enjoy it. Definitely some funny parts but yes the relentless barrage of bad puns, slapstick, and too much winking at the camera can be draining. I love Mel Brooks. My favorites are Blazing Saddles (of course!), History of the World Part 1, and Robin Hood: Men In Tights. I had not seen this one before, only clips here and there. I was doing OK until I saw the pizza guy. That just went too far for me. Mel or not, I had to turn it off. Maybe someday I'll try to watch it again. But yuck ! Oh, the Harrison Ford character was wearing a cowboy hat, not a Stetson, so I think that relates all the way back to American Graffiti, where he thought he was hot stuff and wanted to race the town champ. In AG, Harrison Ford wore a cowboy hat. I don't know if you've seen it or not. I highly recommend it. When he played Indiana Jones, he wore a Stetson (like Bogart and all them gangsters used to wear).

Jose Morales

I know how it feels when a movie is beloved or loved, only to watch and feel it was good, but didn't hit that spot for me. Glad you still enjoyed it. When I first watched this movie as a kid, I hadn't watched any Star Wars movies as my dad didn't like them, so we never got to watch them. I saw this movie at a friend's house. As for Mel poking heavily at the merchandise, he had an agreement with George Lucas that he could make the parody, so long as Mel didn't sell any merchandise for Spaceballs. I feel it wasn't poking fun of consumers, but more poking at a contractual agreement he had, but I don't believe it was well known. I saw Young Frankenstein as a child, but don't remember it at all. I think I should give that another watch.

Doug

The singing, dancing alien kills me every time. The amazing thing is it's hilarious even if you don't get the Michigan J. Frog reference (famous 1950s animated short).

Raymond Guerra

It's not as great as It'd hyped to be, the truly funny things are subtle.

Lastboyscout73

Just an odd side note, they changed the pronunciation of Uranus in 1986 after the Voyager 2 flyby. The astrological community wanted the general public to stop making crude jokes using the name. I remember that as a teenager. I still refuse to pronounce it the new way lol. Yes, I agree, this movie is nostalgic for me but the humor is just so-so now. I guess for me it didn't age well. I find that to be true about older movies sometimes that I used to love. Still, it's a classic and I'm glad you watched it. Yes, the ending was from the 60's version of The Planet of the Apes. I'm sure you will do the latest version when you get to it, so unless you watch the original version of those movies the reference will be lost on you. :)

kaliwali

Yeah, that's what it was! The "Star Wars is dumb, ha ha" wasn't funny to me either. I wanted more jokes about pod racing, or the accidental sibling love even lol, or more one liners. I was surprised this entire movie I never once heard "I've got a bad feeling about this". So it felt less like a SW parody and a bit all over the place with booger jokes and pizza the hut which doesn't really hit for me I guess. Oh well! We can't love everything we watch haha

kaliwali

I haven't seen Star Trek yet! But maybe I can watch that one sometime! So many of you in here seem to love it more than Spaceballs

kaliwali

yeah, some moments definitely made me laugh!! but it just felt different than I expected from Mel Brooks I suppose

kaliwali

LOL I loved the alien dance too! But I guess I need to watch this Frog reference short haha

kaliwali

Yeah that's how I felt too! I knew it's loved, but for some reason the comedy wasn't hitting for me the way I thought it would! I had some great laughs, but overall something didn't land for me here so I get it. But that makes sense about the contractual agreement. I don't think it should have been harped on THIS hard tho for an 'inside joke'

kaliwali

I FEEL YOU. Honestly Pizza guy made me feel so strange lol. It wasn't funny just gross. And the booger jokes were a bit lazy in my opinion. I loved Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein so much, so I was expecting that sharp witty humor. But instead... It had a different feel I wasn't really expecting and honestly didn't love.

kaliwali

Yes! The constant winking at the camera was too strange. Maybe this was the time where fourth wall breaks were more funny and maybe I'm desensitized to them? But I went in expecting more witty Young Frankenstein humor and instead got hit with booger and schwartz jokes. All in all, I had a few great laughs. But not really what I expected! Oh well :)

kaliwali

I'm feeling the same now looking back. I liked it! Definitely didn't love it. Rick Moranis was great tho, I agree lol. And yeah, the booger jokes were a lot. Snotty wasn't even the only one 😅 And I see now about the merchandising jokes!

kaliwali

Yes, exactly! I liked it, but didn't love it like I thought I would

kaliwali

Ahhh I see! For such an 'inside joke' it shouldn't have been so front and center. I went in expecting way more Star Wars inside jokes and instead got booger jokes and a flame thrower for kids LOL. But that's okay! Still had some great laughs, just overall not a love for me.

kaliwali

Possibly generational for sure! More of a 'had to be there' kinda humor I guess.

Greg In East TN

I'm sure you've already seen Blazing Saddles. My favorite Mel Brooks' movie is History Of The World Part 1. If you haven't seen it, it should really be on your list. If you get to it, I'll tell you some things about it. Be well, Grg

kaliwali

LOL I did not know that about the fastest Teslas 😅🤣 He's definitely a fan of this one!

kaliwali

Ahh yes! Definitely didn't' get those references! But apparently I need to check out Transformers and Police Academy now 👀

kaliwali

Animorphs, yes! I always remember staring at them on my trip to the library with my grandma. I tried to read one once and it wasn't my vibe. But the cover art was always fun to me. And I totally get your thoughts about this one! Makes total sense! I think my minset was going into it expecting witty, snappy Young Frankenstein humor and this... wasn't that at all lol

kaliwali

That's disappointing to hear lol. Amazing that he's still making movies at 93 tho!

kaliwali

Maybe I need to reword my thoughts here lol. I think the fanbase is supposed to get hit with some shade (that's the point of most parodies right?) but I think the merchandise jokes were just TOO much of the movie. I wanted more witty and snappy Star Wars jokes about pod racing, "wait she is my sister??", the tiny bears, or whatever. But instead it was just merchandise, booger, and suck jokes. I liked this one and some parts really made me laugh, but it just wasn't what I was expecting I suppose. And yeah, I think going in knowing that inside joke gag would prob make me look at the merchandise differently lol.

kaliwali

I had no idea that was a thing, wow! That's actually crazy 🤣 Sounds like the $400 Star Citizen ship I have in my hangar for FOUR years now that still isn't in game 🔥😅 At least your Chewbacca showed up tho

kaliwali

Yeah, I like this one but definitely didn't love it! I wanted more sharp, witty humor! And I get the merchandise jokes now so I guess I can change my description thoughts about it lol. It's just a personal pet peeve because I've had people shade me on buying too much Harry Potter or Gaming gear and I just don't understand it. I love what I love and if I see a mug that has my favorite character on it, I find joy in those things! ✨

kaliwali

Yeah I agree. It was worth watching to say I've seen it, but I won't be rewatching it again most likely. I had some fun laughs and moments, but most of it didn't hit me the way I thought it would! Which is okay! :)

kaliwali

That's actually crazy they had the name changed LOL. I had no idea. And I think you're right about it just not aging well. I think if I had watched this when it first came out, I'd love it more. But today, it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Joe Mallard

This movie is terrible and not funny at all, Dark Helmet is the best part of it.

Bernie Zwicky

That would be great…I’m Very confident you would love them! There are sequels to each of them, but I especially like the first two movies of each of them!😊❤️

Chris Truex

I understand totally. I think it's no one's business what people buy as fun merch. A mini nuke from fallout is sitting on a shelf near me right now. I also warn you that later Brooks in general is much broader in its comedy. The early brilliance kind of fades

Raymond Guerra

Yeah definitely not his best work. I'm biased too, my cousin watched it endlessly as kids so I was over it, blazing saddles however is very funny lol this doesn't measure up.

Camron

This one has some fun moments, but it just doesn’t hit the same when you’re not 8 years old.

Dave M.

I love it when she said, "balls." OMG.... Girlllll, another movie you GOTTA check out from Mel Brooks is Robin Hood: Men in Tights. By the way, they are making a Spaceballs 2!!!! I guess there was a search for more money. 🤣

Matt Rowland

I think people like me who were elementary age kids when this came out have the most appreciation for it. But honestly, I don't really enjoy watching it anymore, lol. It was great for what it was when I was 12 and my friend and I would watch it every weekend, but now, meh, the humor doesn't do it for me anymore. It still is very quotable though! Kali, I don't think I've ever seen one of the reactors I follow watch this, but if you want to check out 80s humor, especially SNL alumni humor, check out Spies Like Us.

rubberkidney

i always have my copy ready but kali has the goods. no syncy upy. ez mode.

Clockwork360

It is refreshing to see reactors that are truthful in their depiction of a movie/tvshow whether good or bad. Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but the constant references to the in movie advertisements were because when Mel pitched the idea to George Lucas, George liked the idea but had the stipulation that Mel couldn't sell merchandise and toys of characters in this movie, so he added the merchandising gag in the movie to poke fun at that stipulation.

kaliwali

Definitely quotable and had me belly laughing in some parts LOL. "We ain't found s***" 🤣 but yeah I guess this one didn't really age well and definitely wasn't as strong and witty as Mel's Young Frankenstein!

kaliwali

Ahh yes I see! That makes a lot of sense and probably would have been funnier to me if I knew that beforehand 🤣 But I think I was definitely expecting more sharp and witty humor than whatever this was hahaha. Still funny in some parts, but mostly didn't hit for me personally which is okay!

Matt Rowland

That's a great line! And I repeated it once while I was a kid playing in my room, and my mom heard me, lol. Yeah I got grounded for a week. 🤣

rubberkidney

i think he said that about the french because their rep is instantly giving up.

James Park

Hey Kalli I was reminded of some great family movies when seeing this cast, Uncle Buck, Cool Runnings and Honey I shrunk the kids are ones I watch with my kids

DragonFireCK

If you like *Star Trek*, I'd recommend *Galaxy Quest* as it makes fun of it. I always think of Rick Moranis from *Honey, I Shrunk the Kids* myself. Probably just because its closer to my time than *Ghostbusters*.
