Watching this for the first time felt like stepping into a fever dream that was fueled by nostalgia, VR on steroids, and a wild 'what if' vision of our online future. I didn't expect to feel so seen by a movie that centered all around VR and it taking over the world, but here we are lol. At its core this story was about connection. Loneliness, escapism, and the hope that you'll find others out there just like you with the same nerdy interests. The Oasis wasn't just a VR playground. It was a refuge. And honestly? I felt that in my core as someone that also found years of refuge in WoW, Runescape, Diablo, CoD, Star Citizen, Habbo Hotel and New World (which btw... RIP New World by the end of this month 😭).I loved how this movie reminded us that while escaping can be comforting, living is where meaning actually takes root. There are actual people behind the screens, behind the avatars that we grow attached to. Without the other person on the other end of it, that same experience wouldn't exist. And that was so important to remember. The idea that the real world is still always worth fighting for, worth fixing, worth choosing was powerful! Sometimes it's so much easier to hide behind our avatars and keyboards and the curated versions of ourselves. But this story reminds us that showing up as we are is its own kind of bravery too.Ready Player One made me nostalgic for those MMO days, hopeful for more of them, and grateful that even though we have these online spaces there are still real people out there making those interactions mean something too. I'm so grateful for stories, for creativity, for game devs putting a piece of their soul into each game through easter eggs, and for the way fandoms and games make us all feel a little less alone. I think it's time to reinstall Star Citizen hahaha.Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/hsMRPiNmnPgI watched this on Amazon Prime (with my subscription)

Since you have watched this film can I suggest you watch The Shining at some point maybe during Halloween season and also Fall Guy is another movie that has a lot of video game and movie references. This is definitely one of the best video game like movies with many references especially Jurassic Park and also have Steven Spielberg as director is a plus.

Black_TYGR

I have so much to watch late nite. lookin fwd to watch ReadyPlayer and squid eps 4-6 can’t wait! 🙌 thx Kali!

Robert da Spruce

So many references in this film! Given your fairly recent journey into movies, it’ll be fun to see how many you recognize. There are a ton of video game and pop culture references though. So I’m sure you caught a ton of those! Looking forward to your reaction Kali!

PG Modehouse

I've actually never seen the film. I read the first novel which was a fun little power fantasy and tribute to 80s media. Lots of references to Rush, a band I love. It did get a little.... cringey and tropey at times, but I still appreciated what it was trying to pay homage to. Looking forward to checking this out! Also Runescape ♥️

Steve Mercier

So, this movie is very enjoyable, jam-packed with great nostalgia and easter eggs, and grounded by some really good performances...but, at its core, the movie is about saving a fake world through pop-culture references. Don't get me wrong: I still enjoy the movie. And there are certainly real-life (well...in-movie real life) consequences--the bad guys blow up a trailer park, and force people into indentured servitude. But even here, we're shown how bad the bad guys truly are because they don't know the pop-culture references--they're not as fun or as geek-intelligent as the rest of us. It's odd messaging in a movie that has so much going for it as a have-nots vs. haves kind of story. I think I would have liked the movie more if they took down the Oasis in the end. But hey...for what the movie is, I still enjoy it. And any flick other than The Iron Giant where the Iron Giant shows up is still pretty cool in my book. Anyway, (mostly) good shit.

chris berestoff

Diddy Kong Racing mentioned! Not the best kart racer but man I have fond memories playing that with my siblings.

TheJoeKerr

Looking forward to your reaction on this one since I first found you as a gamer. Side note: I’ve been watching every single RDR2 video again. One of my fav playthroughs. Hope to see you back with a controller this year!

James Park

The coins on the eyes are from Greek mythology its payment to the ferry man to cross the river Styx to get to the afterlife

James Park

And I do like how you got Godzilla mixed up with King Kong, check out Godzilla minus one 2023 its amazing

Terry In the UK

I loved all the pop culture references and easter eggs and visually the movie is a feast for the eyes and it's classic Spielberg, and sometimes that's all I need in a movie. However, I know a couple of people who are adamant the book is much better, and sadly that's too often the way when comparing between the two....that one medium doesn't live up to the expectations created by the other. Would be interesting to hear from those who've read the book and what they think as it does seem to be a very decisive difference of opinion.

Richard

As someone in your community who didn't come from a gaming background, this is one of the first movies I've seen where it made that whole world more appealing and interesting. Well, actually I haven't seen that many of those movies. Not being an expert, it was probably good for me because I enjoyed it a whole ton as opposed to gaming experts who might not like it as much for reasons I wouldn't have the in-depth knowledge of to understand. I guess it’s kind of like your experience from the opposite perspective. You come in fresh to movies, not knowing what you’re “supposed” to like. I liked this one a lot since it’s fresh to me. Speaking of gaming, that was a dastardly move Kali, recommending Detroit: Become Human as my first game - your reaction during that first episode had me 😭 You rascal. I loved how much fun you were having during this reaction, what with all the Easter Eggs, Twitch references, gaming nostalgia, vibing with the music, all of that. Super fun reaction and I thought the graphics were amazing in this. Also, sounds like Ohio is the place to be!

Chris

Really appreciate this comment. I’m less forgiving of it as a whole, but you pinpointed the same flaws that get me. It’s not the film’s fault, per se, but I also find such an uninhibited celebration of nostalgia difficult when so much of what we get in pop culture already is retread IP.

pinkdino99

Time for Kali to watch The Shining methinks !

James Park

I cant decide my favourite Kali Quote. "Buns of Sparta " or "holy cat boobs"

SpiffMan

Short version: if you like the movie, it's pretty much guaranteed you will love the book. The movie is awesome and the book is also awesome. The book just has so much more in it than couod fit in the movie. I found more character moments in the book as well.

Terry In the UK

Thank you... that's convinced me enough to give the book a try.

rian

this movies so cool 😎

McShades

I had a Atari 2600 when I was 8 and I got to play Adventure, it is true the creators name was an easter egg in the game.... Funny thing back then, there was no Internet to google stuff, you just had to find it by accident on your own, I think sadly a lot of players don't get to experience the joys of discovering stuff on your own, it's just to tempting to google solutions as soon as you start to feel frustrated... it's so much more satisfying discovering it on your own. I would probably wait until you've seen a lot more movies before watching it again, that way you'll pick up on even more stuff that's going on in the background... The same with reading the book which has even more pop culture references they couldn't show in the movie due to copyrights.

rian

OMG i got all happy you noticed the batman theme from the tries xD

M1 Maz

Yesss the Diddy Kong Racing mention in your intro! Such a great and underrated N64 game. I used to play it with my sister when we were kids, and we'd just goof around during the races. And then we returned together a decade later in the co-op story mode to take on together those damned silver coin races LOL This is definitely the type of movie that you can watch every couple years and see all the new references you catch haha. Like for me, most notable new one that I didn't recognize the first time was Galactica!! I had to pause and rewind several times during the huge fight scene, because I could have *sworn* I saw Garrus in there, but I don't think it was him haha. Also, this movie was definitely a great measuring stick to show how much you've seen and learned about in this one year journey you've been on so far doing reactions! Soooo much that you were able to catch!

M1 Maz

Did you mean Free Guy? :) Because I was definitely gonna recommend it as another great MMO / gaming tie-in movie that she'd enjoy!

Andrew Thompson

OMG! I LOVED sharing this movie with you and all the references! :-) As always Kali, thank you... 'Outlaws for life'

DarthChef

Like most book-to-movie adaptations, this book was better. It was over a longer span of time, more character development and way more pop references. Yes, the book is better. There is actually one bit that i really wished the movie included, but i can understand because of copyright why it wasnt done. Wargames, the movie, is an integral part of the book but wasnt used here, and that is all i can say about that. But as a movie it kept alot of spirit and themes of the book. I love this movie just as much and the idea that Spielberg had to go back and reference alot of his own movies, as well as movies he produced and loved was something I enjoyed on a different level as well.

DarthChef

Kali, you saw certain scenes and clips with no context from The Shining, so no real spoilers that would lessen your enjoyment for the movie. It just sucks we have to wait until October to see your reaction.

KamikazeCDN

As a lifelong gamer, there is so much about this movie and concept I love. Getting lost in a world that you can do anything, be whoever you want. It's like the next stage of gaming you hope for. But, it does come with some very real dystopian consequences. The standard of life is clearly terrible, absolute addiction, loss of real life and so much more. What's more scary, while some of this movie is very high concept...it's also not totally far off where our world is going now. I resonate a lot with the Halliday character in a lot of ways. Like at the end when he talked about not really feeling at home in the real world, I'm right there with him. I mean I totally had a lot of friends growing up but even then there did always seem to be something missing. Or when he talks about not liking change, when things were still just a game. I see that as him saying how he liked when things were simple and I truly agree. Obviously not realistic in an ever changing world but it really ways heavy with how different everything is now compared to before, it makes my heart long for a world that no longer exists. You should check out the Tron movies. They aren't exactly the same but there is a similarity with a main theme/concept (that I won't say to avoid spoiling stuff). There are three movies in the series. Tron (1982), this one absolutely shows it's age and it's not entirely needed for the second film BUT it does help with some context. Tron: Legacy (2010) I personally really enjoy, the visuals were great as was the soundtrack. Tron: Ares (2025) I haven't personally watched yet so I can't speak on it's quality, just what I've heard only and through others.

Dave Hill

So many countless easter eggs and movie/game/comic references in this movie. I LOVE it!!! Like the Zemeckis Cube referencing Robert Zemeckis that directed the Back to the Future trilogy. When Wade activates the cube, if you listen closely, you'll hear a short bit of music that was used in the Back to the Future trilogy. Ready Player Two is also currently in development, so there will be more awesome pop culture references to come!

Boba Fettuccine

This was a lot of fun to watch! If you've got the time I'd definitely read the book. It's every bit as fun as the film, plus it references even more movies, games, and music, particularly from the 80s.

rian

what’s cool is warren robinett put his name as an easter egg cause atari didn’t allow ppl to credit themselves

Terry In the UK

Thank you... that really does help, I appreciate it so much.

Aaron

The bomb Samantha blows up Sorrento with is a Mad Ball. Just rubber balls with wierdly animated faces that somehow were really poplular and had a cartoon tv show in the 80's. Had them when I was a kid.

Wil Castillo

I hope you can handle The Shining. You saw how terrified IOI was. You should watch Free Guy. It's another good movie with Ryan Reynolds.

Chris Chatham

You definitely have to do Ready Player One in your book club. I had the pleasure of reading it before the movie and it's an absolute favorite. The movie does what it has to in order to be a movie, I liked your reaction more than I liked my own seeing it the first time. In books they don't have to contend with copyright, so for all the references in the movie, there are tons more in the book.

Amper Sand

"Why are coins" - it's a religious belief from Greeks and Romans that coins will pay the ferrymen to cross the Styx into the underworld, ensuring passage to the afterlife. In my country is still popular, especially in the villages.

KJ

I guess you have to watch The Iron Giant now... 😁 This was my first time watch and I've fallen in love with Ready Player One. What it says about Creativity over Profitability. The Consumer vs Corporate. How you can make genuine friends online with people you've never met or seen... But also tye importance in touching grass 😂 It wasn't coined until more recently, but a break from all things online has become known as a Digital Detox - and I definitely believe in the benefit of that, for both physical and mental health. This film is going to be worth rewatching as your media journey continues just to see what other references you'll catch in the future. I may even get the Blu Ray - just for the Easter Eggs! 🤣

Mister Lou

Omg you have to watch The Shinning! And possibly The Iron Giant right after to avoid nightmares 😅

Alexander Ocean

God I love your essay recaps, so thoughtful and well written. Can't get enough of your reactions!

Phil Stubblefield

This is one of the most Kali movies ever! You obviously already had a great deal of gamer experience, but I'm so glad you got to enjoy this film *after* you saw so many of the movies that it references! (Yes, there were some real scenes inspired by The Shining, but they weren't really spoilers. Rather, they used a few settings and scenes as jumping off points for plot points from *this* film.) And, yes, the video game Adventure was real, and it was released for the Atari 2600 in 1980, so it is considerably older than you. (But not as old as I!) See the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_(1980_video_game) However, it's based upon an even older game, a 1977 text adventure game technically called Colossal Cave Adventure, although it is frequently abbreviated to just Adventure. I never owned an Atari console, but I did play a version of the text adventure many years ago. It was a groundbreaking game in many ways and paved the way for entire genres of the gaming community. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_Cave_Adventure Back to the reaction... Your best comment, when the bad guy took a kick to his jewels: Kali: "He lost an octave!" 🤣 Another great reaction, my friend! 😊

Jose Morales

I remember friends telling me to watch this movie. I ended up watching, and although I thought it was cool, I feel something about it didn't resonate with me, and unfortunately I don't know why. Although one movie I didn't expect to like was Free Guy, which I did enjoy a bit better, but both are good, and glad you enjoyed this movie. 😎

kaliwali

Ahh maybe I'll check out Free Guy sometime! Sorry you didn't love this one! I thought it was super fun but it did have a bit of an eerie "well, what if this WAS our future life?" vibe lol

kaliwali

This comment made me smile so much!!! You're absolutely right about this one hitting differently after experiencing so many great films over the past year! If I would have watched this back on Twitch when everyone told me to, I wouldn't have understood MOST of it honestly 🤣 In a way this one felt like a super fun recap of my reaction journey so far and that definitely made it feel way more special to me lol That's awesome about the game Adventure! I guess I was way too young for Atari lol but I love that they kept real gamer lore as part of the plot twist in this one! Glad you loved this one and had fun watching with me!! I def enjoyed it!

kaliwali

Wow, thank you so much!! 🩷

kaliwali

Alright The Shining is locked IN for this October now! lol

kaliwali

You articulated all of this sooooo perfectly! It really did feel like a love letter to the online imagination but with a gentle nudge to step back when the world gets too pixelated 🩷 I'm glad you got to enjoy this one for the first time as well! Thank you for such a beautiful reflection!

kaliwali

Ahhh I should have put that together bc I definitely know that info from GoW 🤣

kaliwali

I'd loooove to read that book sometime with you all!

kaliwali

LOL I'm nervous but anxiously ready for The Shining this year! I'll add Free Guy to my list too :)

kaliwali

Ahhh I see! I thought it was an angry bird zombie 🤣😭

kaliwali

Yessss! My N64 and all those games were one of the only things I kept from my childhood 🤣 Gotta boot it up again sometime soon!

kaliwali

With the upcoming Tron hype I've been seeing, I would love to check out the Tron movies sometime soon! But I really feel what you're saying about the pull of a world where you can be anyone, go anywhere, and exist without the weight of reality. That line from Halliday 100% hit me too. I think that what makes Ready Player One so powerful it hurts is that tension you described: the wonder and the warning. YES. Escapism can be so magical, but it also turns into isolation just as quickly. I def felt that "wait! hold on" energy from watching this too with how advanced AI and the online space has been getting the past 10 years. Thanks for bringing so much heart to the discussion! Glad you enjoyed this one!

kaliwali

Okay good!! I'm glad it wasn't too spoiled!

kaliwali

Omg the silver coin races were SO stressful 😭🤣 I'd do the same with my brother!! That's awesome! And LOL seeing a possible Garrus is hilarious! But I also wonder 🙀 there has to be some Mass Effect references in there somewhere! I heard there is a Zelda one too that I need to look out for next watch bc I definitely missed it this first time around!

kaliwali

Ahh I totally agree that players now just don't have the same experience in games! It was all about patience and exploring on your own. I remember just getting lost in Zelda for hours and finding all sorts of crazy stuff! But now there's wiki for everything and people are quick to just look online for answers. Some games are also way too easy now bc they expect players to just enjoy the game vs trying to really look around for answers! And good idea about waiting to watch again!

kaliwali

Detroit: Become Human is a heeeck of a way to start off your gaming era, Richard! 🤣✨ It's so good though! I hope you enjoyed it and didn't get too traumatized LOL And yesss, so many references in this one! I'm glad that you still enjoyed it even as a relatively new gamer!

kaliwali

Ooooh LOL yeah I clearly haven't seen aaany of those movies yet (King Kong or Godzilla) haha but maybe soon!

kaliwali

I'm glad you're still loving the RDR2 playthrough even tho it's a second upload haha! Thanks for watching again!! I saw I just hit 10k over on the gaming channel and I'm so surprised! I can't wait to pick up another game as soon as RDR2 reuploads are finally done!

kaliwali

I feel like this movie was a recap of my time as a reactor and I absolutely LOVED it for that haha! So many were mentioned that I've seen over the past year which is crazy!

Phil Stubblefield

After reading your response, I went back and reread your movie recap. (Which, BTW, is excellent as always!) One point you made was: I loved how this movie reminded us that while escaping can be comforting, living is where meaning actually takes root. There are actual people behind the screens, behind the avatars that we grow attached to. Without the other person on the other end of it, that same experience wouldn't exist. And that was so important to remember. I'm just now realizing the irony of this Patreon-mediated correspondence... because none of us has ever actually met in the real world! I'm not saying that participating in a virtual chat and playing an MMO are equivalent activities, because chats are more about sharing thoughts and feelings, presumably after a period of some reflection, while on-line gaming is more about sharing an immediate, adrenaline-fueled rush. (At least, that's my experience with on-line gaming, which is primarily confined to various Halo games, as you can probably guess from my avatar.) I just find it ironic that we're talking about the importance of the people behind the virtual presence... while never actually meeting those people IRL! 🤔

KJ

I think they were quarters. The agreed upon wage for Simon Pegg at the end was also 25 cents. And all the avatars wood burst into coins if they got defeated in The Oasis. I'm pretty sure all this was put into the Script not only as a nod to Super Mario, but because quarters were the coins used for video game arcade machines that everyone played on when gaming really took off in the 1980s and early 90s.

KJ

Ocarina of Time is still in my top 5 games ever.

Dave Daveson

The book is definitely better than the movie, but the movie is not bad. Might actually be a good thing that you saw the movie first. There is even a second book, Ready Player Two, which continues the story.

Cory Stanish

Madballs Madballs! Fun for one, fun for all!

Cory Stanish

Oh for serious? They're making Ready Player Two? I'm really interested to see how that turns out. Also, it must have been easy so sneak in that snippet of Back to the Future music for the Zemeckis Cube, since Alan Silvestri composed the score for both BTTF and Ready Player One.

Farbod

As an old gamer, it made me happy to hear some of the games you mentioned. Have you played E33 yet? Its replaced Witcher 3 as my favorite game of all time.

kaliwali

I haven't yet but I keep hearing similar praises! I should probably check it out this year 👀

Farbod

Oh you definitely should. Would LOVE to watch you stream it.

Troy Bressi

This is such a great movie the books are just as good

Robert Hinman

id argue the books are so much better than the movie is personally

Robert Hinman

I do hope you get around to reading the book, it gets so much deeper into the social stigmas around gaming as well as how far and how horrendous people can get when a large amount of money is at stake. It also shows you through a characters PoV how toxic and horrible the IoI debt "repayment" system is. I'm personally going to go an reread it myself just for the enjoyment of it.

Troy Bressi

I agree with you on that but I understand why they made the changes they did most this generation would not get a lot of the references from the books but they are both awesome excited to see what they do with the sequel

Jacob

The book was amazing

Jacob

You really should check out Grandma's Boy, the main characters are video game testers, one of the co-stars is a young Joanna Hill

Jacob

High 5 is a reference to the top 5 on the score board. There is a Ready Player 2 book, hopefully they make it into a movie, I haven't read the book yet though

Aaron Taft

I gave up my cell phone 3 years ago. My life is better without it (I still have a PC), but it almost killed me. It's impossible to describe life without the cell phone. I literally have no one to talk to. Witch is liberating and awful at the same time. It also costs money and extra time to just navigate day-to-day tasks. But, I've become an avid reader, I've become a problem solver, and I've liberated myself from old stresses. Everyone should try it.
