Starting up Season 2 of Squid Game felt we picked up right where we left off. But then the leap forward by two whole years made the show feel slower and more intentionally paced. It makes us focus more on the silence, the weight, the small character moments, the atmosphere. The pacing worked. It made me really appreciate how these episodes trust us to sit with the tone of this season instead of jumping right back into the chaos and escalation of the squid game. Instead, we get to sit with the emotional aftermath of what the games really leave behind. This season is all about choice. Somewhat. Maybe more like the illusion of it. Everyone knows exactly what the game costs now but yet... They're still pulled back in. That realization hit even harder in these first episodes. The games aren't about shock value anymore. That lens got stripped away last season for me. It's about desperation, guilt, and the quiet ways people convince themselves that they have no other option. They're at the edge of the cliff. I kept thinking, this is what trauma looks like when it never lets you go.Emotionally, episodes 1-4 felt really grounded and psychological. Less spectacle, way more dread. I kind of love that this is how the show lets moments breathe this season. It hangs around just long enough for you to feel unsettled before moving onto the next thing. The game isn't rushing anymore, it's watching. Asking us to really meditate on the idea of if these games are 'right' or wrong still.Overall, I'm equal parts hooked and uneasy. A familiar feeling at this point in the series lol. These episodes don't give any answers yet. Only more questions, knots in my stomach, and that familiar Squid Game feeling of "I really want to look away, but I can't". If this is the emotional groundwork laid out in just these first episodes, I'm thinking we are in for a ride next week as we finish out Season 2 already! If you're watching this with me for the first time as well, what did you think of it so far!?Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/DpysXgxtEE0I watched this on Netflix

Kieran Byrne

thats my next 4 hours sorted while I paint :D

kaliwali

These episodes were sooo much longer than I thought they'd be for a show! But I loved it haha. Enjoy!

kaliwali

Ooo that sounds delicious! Enjoy!! Happy Saturday!

can't wait for your frontman reaction to joining lol

There are people who like Thanos and people that don't like Thanos. THRILLED you are in the like Thanos camp. Adds such a unique wildcard to the season that season 1 lacked. Also not me acting like a VIP viewing these people as reality tv characters.

James Park

I never got around to watching season two, im ready for the roller-coaster

Liam Harrold

plus it wasn't a fluke in season one il nam purposly chose out to show they were given a choice but still returned

Ayeee 92 here as well :) and thank you for the binge sessions like this. It’s nice watching this again with someone so sensitive and not really afraid to show it. As a pretty burly blue collar man that people are afraid of most of the time, I’m actually a cry baby with stuff like this and a lot of other things, just super emotional and sensitive lol. Been made fun of a lot for it in the past, mostly by women of course. Kinda feel like you’re one that wouldn’t judge anyone for that though. I subbed to your patreon for this and Frieren which is one of my favorite animes as well, so I’m really excited to see you react to both, and I’ve been watching a lot of your other stuff too. Thank you for all the content you create, you’re an amazing person.

I just realized that one of the first teams to die in 6 legged race was the team that rejected the mother and son from their team.

Shreyas Anand

I see SEASON 1 as mirror of the real world = about a system where the advantaged take advantage of the of the disadvantaged and how people are willing to die to escape the system humans themselves created. SEASON 2 and 3 as also mirror but in a different way = about showing how difficult is it to change the existing system from the inside and outside, and that there would always be people who are desperate because of capitalism. I think from the recruiter guy, we kind of have a hint of what kind of people the organization looks for to work as guards, a type of person who sees hates humans as sees them as trash and have no empathy or feeling for anything.

Shreyas Anand

In the 6 legged game, both teams aren't competing against each other; if one team crosses the finish line before 5 minutes, the other team doesn't get killed, they have cross it before the time's up. The both teams are trying to beat the 5 minute timer. The reason they were done this way to get through as many groups of 5 as quickly as possible. ALSO, I like how this season especially this episode explores the flaws in the gender norms, the masculine marine guy was slightly made fun of for being good at gong-gi (traditionally known to be a game for girls) because he played with his older sisters which makes him seem slightly feminine. The pregnant woman said she was good at Ddakji (the recruiter game) which is traditionally known as a game for boys.

Shreyas Anand

If you think about it, 001 (front man) and 456 also went to the games for the treatment of their loved one (the mom for 456 & the wife for 001). They both won, but came back home to realized that it's for nothing. They both saw the money they won as blood money and 001 didn't spend his money either like 456, and was living in a cheap motel room if you remember from S1. I'd like to believe he kind of sees a part of himself in 456. I'd also like to believe that he let the pregnant woman in his team as a sympathy pick because it probably reminded him about his pregnant wife. Just to note : the person who shot the body in the coffin the game is number 11, when she had the mask on in that scene with the black square officer guy, she had a voice changer that makes her sound a little less feminine. Basically, number 11 has been working in the games for years and just took a 2 year break after the year season 1 took place (2021) before being invited back.

James Park

Ive got similar calluses, mine are from 30 years of manual labour

To give you some important background on this season and season 3, S2 / 3 was actually supposed to be combined as 1 season (SEASON 2) which was intended to be 13 episodes and s2 and 3 was written + filmed simultaneously, but Netflix chose to split the story into 2 seasons probably to make more profit. In reality, Season 3 is basically "SEASON 2 : Part 2", Season 2 is a set up bridge season to season 3 instead of a standalone season, S2/3 are both one single story split into 2 halves.

Thank you, Kali. It's really cool that it's the whole thing here, as opposed to youtube. Of course, you can be sure I'll be thanking you over there as well.

It's funny that watching your season 1 reaction with you, since I had already seen it, I could be (slightly) less tense, already knowing who I should and shouldn't get attached to, and who will prevail in those life or death situations. But this now being a blind watch for me is stressful LOL! Especially the russian roulette. Loud bangs always make me jump, so I find myself tensing and looking away each time the trigger is getting pulled I really like these characters! As a whole, they're giving a very different vibe than the ones in season 1, and I love them all the same. Thanos is a vibe LOL Also, the pentathlon and the stress of having to perform for your teammates is taking me back to my Overwatch days, having a bad game, and all your teammates looking at you like "come on bro" LOL

David Trumble

I was excited for you to start this after your sentiment from last season about wanting the games to mean something "more" than they did, because this season certainly gives you a better look into the mindsets of the perpetrators. Because the audience knows who the Front Man is this time around, and follows the character of 011 as she works for the guards, a new feeling of unease is introduced to all the carnage: a subtle sense of narrative complicity. We know more than Ji-hun at this point, our minds begin strategizing for both sides like a chess game, it's not as simple as going through the games with the contestants, we are pushed into the uncomfortable position of being privy to the villain's plans. The benefit, though, is being able to glean some idea of the fragile rationalizations the perpetrators have made in order to carry out these atrocities. The Front Man, having suffered a tragedy in his life even before going through the games, draws from a deep nihilism about humanity's character to justify his involvement, 011 deals with her trauma of leaving North Korea and being ripped from her daughter by viewing her executions as mercy killings for the wretched in society, and her crooked boss who's continuing the organ blackmarket tells himself that he is salvaging life-saving organs from the dead so their lives were not a total waste to society. Even the Recruiter, the Ddjaki guy, as unhinged and warped as he clearly is, spends his off-time performing his own mini social experiment with the Lottery vs Bread test with the homeless in the park. It's clearly not something that falls under his job description for the games, not a means of recruitment, therefore its only utility seems to be as a means of re-affirming his warped view of the people he ensnares as being trash making their own self-centered decisions. The VIPs and Oh Il-nam's original vision for the Games may continue to be utterly shallow and base, but I like that the show gives some examples, even in someone as messed up as the Recruiter, of the kind of extreme compartmentalization one would have to maintain in order to facilitate the murder of hundreds without question. But...will someone question it?

Jose Morales

I had also thought the games would be the same when I first watched. Same games, new people. Then when game 2 was completely different, I think I felt the same dread Gi-hun felt. The characters in this season definitely have more diverse personalities. I keep laughing when you say "I love him/her/them" and immediately course correct yourself to not feel this way, because I did the same thing as well.

PG Modehouse

Yep, Rock Paper Scissors in asian countries have some slight variations. That gun shape with the fingers is scissors. I know that in Japan, there's sometimes a follow up high-speed mini game by the victor who points in one of two directions (left, right) while yelling "Acchi muite hoi!", and the loser must turn their head away from that direction to win. This either gets them the victory via comeback, or lets them retry RPS again.

PG Modehouse

The actor who plays The Recruiter, Gong Yoo, is actually quite famous in Korean film and tv dramas. When he started out he was cast in lead heartthrob roles for romantic comedy/dramas LOL. His most famous series being Coffee Prince, which came out the summer of 2007, and made him a star all over Asia, and even amongst Korean Media fans in the US at the time. This was pre-BTS, the fan scene was different then lol. He became recognized worldwide after the 2016 film Train to Busan, which was a critical success. Squid Game only cemented that for him.

James Park

"I can't love people" 😢dont stop Kali your empathy is what makes you special

PG Modehouse

If I were to hazard a guess as to the gamerunners' logic, 465 being present in the games gives the competitors an "unfair" advantage, so having a confederate 001 in the games is their way of eliminating his influence "fairly".

kaliwali

Ahhhh actually a really interesting way to look at it!

kaliwali

This actually makes a lot of sense because he was incredible in this episode! Apparently I really need to see more of the film he is now!

kaliwali

The more diverse personalities are amazing BUT not great for our hearts 🤣😅 I honestly love that this isn't just a 'copy' of Season 1! Makes it really interesting and intense.

kaliwali

Oh wow. I love how you put this. Especially "narrative complicity". I agree that shifting our perspective to the perpetrators really changes the experience in an uncomfortable but important and intentional way! It feels like the show is asking us to really sit with both sides and weigh the options even more than it did in Season 1. Which makes it really uncomfortable. It's like you said, they are so ordinary. None of them see themselves as monster, but instead as merciful, necessary.. even logical. The question you end on is the part I'm really curious and nervous about as well. The show seems less interested now in whether the games are evil (obviously they are) and more in whether anyone inside the system can still break these mental gymnastics long enough to say "stop now". It definitely makes this season feel very intense and interesting already! I love that it isn't just a copy of Season 1, but an entire shift in mentality.

kaliwali

It's awesome to see you over on Patreon now Irrelevance!! I also love that I don't have to chop it all up here just to share it with you all. Feels much more relaxed and enjoyable 🤍

kaliwali

I'm the saaaame way with loud noises and that's definitely why the russian roulette scene was hard for me as well lol. I've heard of it before but never actually witnessed it and I have absolutely NO interest in that in any form. New fear unlocked 😅🤣 I love that this is your first watch too so you can suffer alongside me now bahaha. And the Overwatch days lol. You're reminding me of the same feeling now in Tarkov and Valorant now when I'm the last player alive and I gotta save their loot or come out with a clutch 😅

kaliwali

Someone (kinda rudely LOL) on YouTube said it was from him slapping the people playing ddakji. I didn't know you could get calluses from that only from manual labor of some kind lol. Or guitar playing!

kaliwali

Ahhh I see! Of course Netflix would do that lol. I was wondering why this season and the next were so short compared to 1

kaliwali

LOL I wasn't too sure about him at first, but he grew on me very quickly after he hit her with the "he knows you're a flower" 🤣 but then the drugs came in and he's just so unhinged I can't help but laugh and love it lol

kaliwali

Yessss I totally agree with your thoughts here! I think he definitely can sympathize with 456 because he entered the games very similarly. And thank you so much for the number 11 info. I was wondering if maybe others were also feeling the same way she was. But thanks for clearing that up so I'm not confused going into the end of Season 2!

kaliwali

92 let's gooo! lol I'm glad you're enjoying this show with me here and other stuff as well! I definitely wear my heart on my sleeve all the time 🤣 I've also been made fun of for being too emotional in everything I do, so I feel you there

kaliwali

TRUE 🤯 How have I forgotten this detail! Thank you for reminding me that Il-Nam was the last to vote as well!

kaliwali

Hope you're liking it so far!

David Trumble

Indeed. In that way, I'm glad you've already watched and really been engrossed with "Andor", which feels like a real companion show to this, being about the tipping point for revolution within a society and what it takes for ordinary people, as you say, to be radicalized. Will be very curious to hear your thoughts once you've finished this about how this show makes its own unique points about struggle within unjust systems. Thanks for your responses.

011 and the dad of the sick little girl both appear in a Korean horror series called Sweet Home playing total opposites of them here, you should check it out!
