Words can't describe how ready and excited I was to watch more Frieren with you guys this week! Last weekend we got snowed in with over 20 inches of snow and I caught a bit of a head cold, so I rewatched the first three episodes not once but twice 🤣 So to say I've been absolutely loving this show so far would be a huge understatement. I'm obsessed. These four episodes brought us right back into that calm, meditative vibe of memory, time, and the spaces people leave behind. The idea that souls linger not in some dramatic unreachable afterlife, but in an almost mundane place feels so interesting to me! I love that this world keeps revealing itself to us in fragments. Quests. I can almost see the map unblurring and expanding through every episode now and it's amazing!I can't help but notice that Frieren goes to people in search of quests, but the tasks she is given aren't even for the people assigning them. They're always for her. Even all the way back to her master, Flamme, encouraging her to collect spells, observe humans more closely, and value moments that won't matter to her in the short term but mean everything in the long run. It's clear that Flamme wasn't preparing Frieren to shape history or even defeat demons. She's preparing her to understand grief, connection, and regret. Even long after she has gone. Then comes Eisen with his 'quest' for Frieren. He frames the idea of the journey to heaven not as something he needs, not as a personal wish, but as something Frieren might one day need. He understands something that Frieren doesn't yet. That she's carrying so many unfinished feelings she doesn't even know how to name. This journey is meant for Frieren to finally face what she's been avoiding. And that's when my theory finally got set in stone. These "quests" are so tender because they are acts of care and love. These tasks aren't for Heiter or Eisen or Flamme. They're tasks set for her so far ahead in time that even though she doesn't understand why she does them now, she'll grow into the meaning behind them one day. These people that are living such short lives compared to hers, are actually quietly shaping her future long after they're gone. And that... Is just so incredibly beautiful to see. And Frieren never turns the quests down or even questions them really. She treats them as errands. Curiosities. Completely unaware of the emotional breadcrumbs they're leaving behind. This journey was never about the destination. It's about Frieren having time and space to become someone who can finally look back and feel something more. To stop being so cold and shut off from the people and world around her. It's a journey that I can also feel changing me as well.See you all next week for more!
