The world got soooo much bigger in these episodes! Meeting the Hashira the way that Tanjiro did felt so suffocating and scary. On one hand, I was in awe at the different Hashira's personalities and styles. Their presence, their confidence, the way each of them carries something unique to them. It made the Demon Slayer Corps feel real in a way that hadn't before. Like this isn't just Tanjiro's journey or burden to carry.. There's a whole amazing group of warriors and philosophies right here in front of him now. Fighting the same fight, but even better. On the other hand, I was so upset and frustrated. The way they treated Nezuko? It hurt to watch. But at the same time, I get it. Their entire existence is built around this one truth: destroy demons. No exceptions. No hesitations or mercy. So when they see Nezuko, they're seeing every life they've lost. The way they tried to break her to prove a point made my stomach hurt tho. Nezuko isn't just a "demon". It made me want to scream at the screen to STOP and realize. She's Tanjiro's heart. And watching him lay there, powerless, aching from the last battle... yeah that was rough. That rooftop moment with Kocho though.. That felt like a breath of fresh air after all the tension and intensity from the trial. There is something so gentle about her but also burning. I love that she actually listened to Tanjiro. She believes in him. And maybe it is a little bit of a selfish belief because of what happened to her sister, but that conversation meant so much to Tanjiro regardless. You could see it shift his own perspective a bit.I think he needed that more than anything. He's always carrying so much and in a way, it feels like Kocho took some of that burden for him.But I'm not gonna lie, seeing Zenitsu and Inosuke in these episodes surprised me.It feels like the fire inside of them dimmed.Inosuke especially. He's always so loud, relentless, charging ahead. But he's different. It makes me so sad to see both of them get left behind in the training. I want to help them, shake them, tell them to snap out of it. That they're still capable.Meanwhile, Tanjiro is out here doing the absolute most.Total concentration breathing... all the time!? Thinking back to when he could barely hold it for moments without feeling like his body would explode.. Now he's out here training to live in that state constantly. That's insane dedication on a different level 👀It honestly makes me so excited for what's coming next in this show!Because Tanjiro isn't just growing stronger.. He's also becoming someone the enemy can't ignore. Like the master said, he's bait. And with the Hashira in the picture now. With friendships being tested. With new power growing stronger and stronger. It feels like the story is taking another deep breath before diving back into something SO much bigger. And I'm very ready for it!See you all next week for more 🔥Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/qDnPsEWZAbsI watched this on Crunchyroll in original Japanese with subtitles

I'm sure you won't care about rui at all just like you said...nope you cried. kind of a weird spot for next week only 2 more episodes in this season and then you could watch 2x01 next week as well, then watch the movie as next weeks movie, then just continue on with 2x08 next next week....listen its a perfect idea, ok?! (just heard you address this very idea, its the only rational choice) also very appropriate closing emoji on the book report. interesting that you noticed regokus hilt. for the names its japan so they always say the last name first kamaboko gonpachiro, rengoku kyojuro, tengen uzui, so on...

Namu Amida Butsu is a prayer in Buddhism . translating to "I take refuge in Amida Buddha" or "I bow to the truth of infinite light and compassion". Basically its a prayer to bring peace to ones mind .

Can’t wait to watch this later today this and the frieren reactions have become a highlight of my week

Wutai

Thanks for the reaction! You should watch Lisa's "First Take". Lisa is the singer of the opening song and First Take is a You Tube channel where singers do only one take of the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpYy6wwqxoo

In japan, the first name you read is the family name, and the second name you read is their given name. So for Kamado Tanjuro, we call him by Tanjuro, his given name. Additionally, people will call others by their family name if they are not close or comfortable enough to be informal with that person. Like in the case of the butterfly hashira calling Tomiyoka Giyu "Tomiyoka san", his family name, while Urokudaki calls him "Giyu", his given name. Hope thats not too confusing, love reliving this show with you, great reactions!

An interesting fact I learned recently, which I think adds to the show, is that the Buddhist version of hell that's more common and traditionally believed in Japan is a bit different from the more Westernised Christian version we're probably used to. And the show has so many Buddhist references and elements to it, that presumably the Buddhist version of hell is the one that's relevant to the show's mythology. Apparently, in the Buddhist version, it's not about eternal damnation but instead is more about cleansing. So you go there and suffer for a set amount of time, depending on the sins you committed in life, and then once your time is served, you can pass on to heaven or be reincarnated. And that time can apparently be shortened by the prayers of loved ones or the forgiveness of those whom you have wronged. I think that version really suits the Demon Slayer world, as some of the demons' backstories are so tragic that the idea of them suffering forever just doesn't feel right. I think the idea of them suffering for a while to pay penance for the evil they did, but then getting to move on once their time is done, is much more appropriate. And it adds an extra layer to Rui's parents going to hell with him. They could have waited for him to serve his time in hell, then be reunited with him afterwards. But they loved him too much to let him suffer through that alone, so they willingly chose to go through that suffering with him. It makes it even more of a beautiful sacrifice in my mind, which is why I thought the fact was worth sharing. But I'm no expert on the topic. It's just something I saw someone mention once when they were talking about Demon Slayer, and I googled it a bit afterwards. So I may be misunderstanding certain aspects or not explaining it well. But that's how I understand the belief system to be in its most basic form.

Are we getting the movie or the breakdown in episodes? Would def love to have the movie reaction at once lol.

Luii

i love this series along with Frieren. I wanna suggest Violet Evergarden, Haikyuu, or even Hunter x Hunter. (if you want a longer series.) all great animes that I return to all the time.

Luii

Vinland Saga as well.

I genuinely never believed how engrossed, enthralled and just how much I could come to love animé in such a short space of time. Without you, I would have never taken the plunge into this medium Kali, you led the way and I followed and I'm so, so glad I did. Whereas at first I thought I'd just be dipping my toe to see what these shows were like., I'm now happy to dive head first into the deep end into what is one of the finest art forms I've had the pleasure to watch for a long time. Thank you Kali.

Holy Arathi

Mitsuri, Kocho and Rengoku are my favorite Hashira.

Holy Arathi

I love the pacing of this show. I’m so bloody excited for all future arcs!

She's planning on watching the movie :)

Yes! She's going to be watching the movie :)

I really loved meeting that Hashira! And getting to see their crazy characters haha. Really also enjoyed all the time you took at the end of Ep22, to go back through all their introductions and really get to know them

It for sure hurts to watch the Hashira treat Nezuko the way they do, but you're right, that scene is *such* an important scene. Also, if they hadn't treated her that way, I would question the writer's ability to portray the characters authentically. Developmentally, it's important because it establishes official amnesty for Nezuko. Consider the fact that every Demon Slayer except for Zenitsu that Tanjiro has met and that has seen Nezuko has tried to kill her (and reasonably so)--she is now officially known about and recognized as a demon that is to be permitted to live as per their master. Regardless of each individual Hashira's feelings on the matter, it's clear they wouldn't disobey. Narratively, however, it's sort of essential for the believability of these characters that they reacted the way they did. Besides what you already said about their entire existence being to Destroy demons, you have to consider exactly what that means and why; the Hashira are driven. Driven enough to suffer whatever it took to reach the heights of power that they now have. They're not *normal* people, not by a long shot, and you can bet that each one of them probably has a reason and an event (likely not so different from Tanjiro's) that put them on this path to dedicate their lives to destroy all of the demons. Nearly everyone in the corps has a deeply personal reason for why they hate demons so much that they would constantly put their lives on the line to see that no more lives are claimed by them. Consider how little of a break Tanjiro gets between missions, and now multiply that by many years and possibly even increase the intensity of it, because you can bet the Hashira have even more burden for accomplishing and completing missions on their shoulders. Additionally, none of the Hashira, in all their years (and some of them their ancestor's years) of slaying demons, have ever met a single demon that wasn't evil. Obviously Frieren's universe and Demon Slayer's is vastly different in the origin of demons and their exact nature, but one thing you can relate and parallel is that the Hashira likely see demons in a similar way that Frieren does. Again, consider all of the demons that Tanjiro has fought so far and all of the lives every single one of them has taken, and now place that in the context of a lifetime of seeing that happen and never *once* encountering a demon that was anything other than a massacre waiting to happen. Nezuko is an anomaly, as is Tamayo, and the Hashira do not know about Tamayo. So yeah, as painful as that scene was to watch, imo there really isn't any other way that it could have realistically played out. Every single Hashira knows that when they hesitate, people die, so it's definitely not in their nature to be curious enough about a demon to give it a chance to prove them wrong.

John Smith

There was no word in the letter that he would take care of this situation or "you can count on us".Nezuko will be dead without his participation, obviously after a single act of devouring a person, Hashiras will immediately kill her.He said he would commit seppuku, which is essentially suicide. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seppuku

DreadPirateRob

Violet Evergarden for sure. It will break you though.

It’s actually so cool you’re watching this! Your emotional capacity only makes that so much better. This story will also only get better. Total legit ride, all the way. Thank you, Kali.

So for how names work in Japan, it is considered proper to call people by their familial names . As someone starts to develop a more personal connection and relationship with someone they may start to use their given first name with permission, but it's not "normal" like it is here to do so and carries much greater significance. There are sometimes specific circumstances where using a first name is permissible too, though; like if you were to enter someone's home, in that situation the master of the house would be called by the family name, and you would use first names for the rest of the family. Also, going along with this, in Japan when saying someone's full name, the family name usually comes first followed by their given name. So in English dubs they'll say "Tanjiro Kamado," but in Japanese it will be "Kamado Tanjiro." One more thing, as it relates to pronunciation, Japanese phonetic rules are MUCH simpler than our own. Japanese is considered a "sound poor" language, which means (taken from an AI overview because I don't want to go try to find my Japanese language book right now) "Japanese has a much simpler phonetic system than English, with only 5 vowels and roughly 20-23 consonant sounds. English, in contrast, features around 12-14 vowels (plus diphthongs) and 24-25 consonant phonemes, offering a far greater variety of sounds." Functionally, what this means is that the sounds are (as far as I'm aware) always consistent with how they are spelled (English letter spelling of Japanese words is called "Romanji") and do not change based on different combinations of letters like ours do. So for Rengoku for example, his name "Kyojuro" will be "kyo-joo-ro" as three syllables. Or for Uzui, it would be "oo-zoo-ee." (i's always make hard "e" sounds, u's are always "oo"." The Japanese have two phonetic syllaberies/alphabets; thy're are comprised of essentially the same sounds, but used in different contexts. They're known as the Hiragana and Katakana, or together known as the "kana." There are 46 characters, and they have strict sound-to-symbol matching, which is why the sounds in Japanese are consistent. Again, just gonna copy and paste below, in case you're interested. But, whenever you see the Romaji spelling of a japanese name (or word--you can pay attention to the song lyrics for some anime too if they're captioned), their composition will nearly always be some form of a combination of these letters/sounds, and pronunciation of them will not change. Vowels: あ (a), い (i), う (u), え (e), お (o) K-Row: か (ka), き (ki), く (ku), け (ke), こ (ko) S-Row: さ (sa), し (shi), す (su), せ (se), そ (so) T-Row: た (ta), ち (chi), つ (tsu), て (te), と (to) N-Row: な (na), に (ni), ぬ (nu), ね (ne), の (no) H-Row: は (ha), ひ (hi), ふ (fu), へ (he), ほ (ho) M-Row: ま (ma), み (mi), む (mu), め (me), も (mo) Y-Row: や (ya), ゆ (yu), よ (yo) R-Row: ら (ra), り (ri), る (ru), れ (re), ろ (ro) W-Row: わ (wa), を (wo) Ending: ん (n) (Some notes--"a" always makes the "ah" sound, "i" always makes the "ee" or hard "e" sound, "u" always makes an "oo" sound, "e" always makes an "ay" or hard "a" sound, and "o" always makes the "oh" sound.) So for the "K-Row," it would be "kah, kee/(key), koo/coo), kay, koh." The S-Row would be "sah, see, soo, say, soh/so," and so on. So "Inosuke" is actually "ee-no-soo-kay," but when you speed it up some of those sounds get very abbreviated (so the "suke" part can sound a little bit like they're just saying "skay," but there is a small "oo" after the s). It would be like when we say "beverage," but it can often sound like "bevrej" because we don't linger on the "er" in "beverage" for very long at all. And for "Muichiro," it would be "moo-ee-chi-ro." Basically, as a general rule of thumb, if you see a phonic sound in Japanese, it is going to be pronounced--they don't tend to drop entire vowels or syllables like we do in word spellings. All of this is why Japanese is actually one of the easiest languages for an English speaker to learn; they follow a lot of our same language rules, being a language based on phonics, but without all the rule-breaking and exceptions. The most difficult part about learning Japanese, I'm told, is the Kanji, simply because there are thousands of them. Kanji, unlike the Kana, are symbols which represent words/concepts/etc, they are not phonetic spellings. Think I guess the difference between the numberal "3" versus spelling it out, "three," but in Japan and China they have symbols to represent what seems like a vast majority of their words and names (not just numbers as we do).

DorkRunner

The part of the sword you were referring to is called the "guard," or "crossguard." The "hilt" would essentially be the whole handle, which is comprised of the pommel (the very end of the hilt/handle), the grip, and the guard/crossguard.

Oh awesome haha thanks!

"Each girl has two boobs, one behind, and two thighs" That is the quote of the year🤣🤣 I'm just thinking about how Fern in Freiren thinks Stark is a perv for simply accidentally walking up on them bathing in the river WHILE THEY WERE FULLY COVERED MIND YOU. WTF would she do if she met Zenitsu, or rather if Zenitsu met her. 🤣🤣 Its amazing how this show can go from such incredible truly meaningful moments like Rui's backstory, Tanjiros plight about how demons were once humans, Nezukos memories as she stopped herself from biting Sanemi, Shinobu and Tanjiros talk on the roof etc...and then just pull a hard 180 degree turn into "EACH GIRL HAS TWO BOOBS, A BEHIND AND TWO THIGHS AND THEY SMELL AMAZING" Like BRUH WHAT IS GOING ON🤣🤣🤣 I also just REALLY REALLY want to give massive props to Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina, the composers for this show. The music they have composed for this is UNBELIEVABLE. Especially the different versions of Nezukos theme, from the light, gentle piano version that always plays when her human side is at the forefront and when Giyu saw her, to the more orchestral version that plays when shes fighting against her demon self and the urge to bite Sanemi...their compositions are absolutely and have been so brilliant throughout and Nezukos theme in particular never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Like you said dude it gets you every freaking time. I absolutely love and adore this show so far. EVEN THOUGH the urge to deck Zenitsu returned a little🫣....I adore this show 🤣🤣

hinaru

The japanese will say names as last name/first name but in the subtitles they're written as first name/last name. Even though Shinobu wants to fulfill her sister's dream of befriending demons, she knows she can't because deep inside she hates them. That's why she is relieved to have met Tanjiro who, like her sister, truly sympathies with demons and she feels she can entrust that dream to him. That was such a meaningful moment. Kanao backstory incoming... Fun fact: "Kocho" literally means "butterfly"

hinaru

I wanted to suggest that too! And maybe include a reaction at the end of season 1?

Howie

I'm late to the party as you are only two episodes away from the end of season one. Looking forward to rewatching the entirety of season two with you! And the movie!

Kase

Just in case you don’t know, when Urokodaki mentioned in his letter that he, Tanjiro, and Tomioka would commit seppuku if Nezuko ever kills a human, it basically means they will take their own lives. That’s why Tanjiro looked at Tomioka that way, he didn’t realize Tomioka committed to that.

Killua X

hello, not sure if you've talked about this yet but hopefully you'll be watching the acclaimed Mugen Train movie for S2 and not the broken down episode version, thanks.

l4zer

too many comments for me to skim, sorry if someone else already said, the sword part you were interested in on rengoku's sword was a "cross guard", used to protect the hands in the case of a clinch or parry.

Shane

ahhhhh i can't believe people convinced you to watch ep1 BEFORE the movie! I mean it's fine in terms of story but you're going to miss out on a hell of a lot of emotional depth! there's many lines and scenes that just won't have anywhere near the same weight or meaning as watching it in release order! it's like watching Star Wars prequels before the original trilogy! always watch in release order!

kaliwali

But episode 1 is before the Mugen Train episodes start up, right? 😅 So it is still the same viewing order as intended

Shane

you won't miss anything story wise but like I said you'll miss a lot of the intended emotion! you won't get that feeling of nostalgia etc... I can't say much else without giving things away! but maybe after the movie at least do a quick rewatch of ep1 then you might understand what i mean!
