I absolutely love that the beginning of this Season felt like picking up right where we left off. But I have to start with a little confession...I could absolutely kick myself for not catching the deja vu moment during the wagon ride when they were talking about low funds! It mirrors the cart ride with the Hero's party from the very beginning of Season 1 so beautifully... Somehow I blanked on it in the moment. I think I was really overwhelmed by the excitement of starting a new season of Frieren. The music, the landscapes, the feeling of stepping back into the journey. My brain must have short-circuited for a second LOL. It wasn't until I was rewatching that part during my time editing it down for you guys that I realized exactly what that moment was.. A direct callback to the very beginning of it all. I think what makes Frieren so special is how they plant all of these tiny, quiet echoes throughout the entire story. It puts so much care into the subtle emotional parallels. Wagon rides, a line of dialogue, the way a character pauses for a second before speaking. It rewards you for paying attention. And it rewards you even more when you come back for a rewatch and notice the threads that you didn't realize the first time around. That's the kind of storytelling that ages beautifully!Episode 1 focusing so much on Stark was such a lovely choice. After the Mage Exam, Stark almost felt a little distant from the story just because we hadn't spent much time with him. So starting off Season 2 by addressing his place in the party felt incredibly intentional and smart. I can understand why Frieren and Fern might quietly wonder if he's happy traveling with them. Being surrounded by two very intense mages cannot be easy (we even heard Stark's grumblings in the bar that one time LOL). And the added complication of slowly developing feelings for one of them? Yeah.. that's a lot for one guy to handle 😅But the reason he gives for staying with them sent my heart spinning. They pushed him to become more than he ever believed he could be.They helped him grow stronger. Not even just physically, but as a person. It's such a simple motivation, but it carries so much meaning. Stark isn't chasing glory or fame or destiny. He's choosing the people who help him believe in himself. And Frieren... She continues to be one of the most quietly beautiful character journeys I've ever seen. Her memories are changing. When she recalls Himmel and the Hero's party now, the moments linger longer. They feel warmer. There's more emotion in the way she sits with each memory instead of just observing them from a distance. And her expression afterwards... The little softness in her face. The tiny smiles. The Frieren we met at the beginning of this story would recall those moments with a sort of 'meh'. But now you can see the feelings and emotion behind them. She's not just remembering the past, she's feeling it.And Fern. Her agreeing to Stark's date idea absolutely made my heart do a penguin dance. It feels like such a small step and it could go horribly LOL. But I feel like this is so huge for Fern. She's always so focused, so disciplined, so composed. Seeing her finally allow herself to explore something like that shows just how much she is growing too!I don't know if their relationship will blossom into something more. Maybe it will stay in this sweet, awkward stage forever. But either way, I'm really excited to see where it goes. These first three episodes reminded me why I fell in love with this story in the first place. The tone never shifted. The story didn't try to reinvent itself all the sudden or become something more dramatic.Frieren continues to do what it does best. Slows down. Breathes. Allows the small moments of life to pass by and remind us that those moments are often the ones that matter the most.A wagon ride (still kicking myself for this one lol)A memory.A shy invite to a date.A warrior realizing he belongs right where he is.These tiny moments feel just as epic as any grand battle in this show.If this is how Season 2 begins, I have a feeling this journey is going to be just as beautiful as the last one 🌿 See you all next week for more!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/Tr8E0NK-LIYI watched this on Crunchyroll in original Japanese with subtitles

Yay! More Frieren! Can’t wait to see what happens next! On a completely different subject. I know you’re in Ohio. Just curious if you heard/saw the meteor yesterday

TChang23

That opening hit so hard after waiting a year and a half for a new season, it’s probably the only show that I’ve ever almost started crying over the first two minutes lmao

Terry In the UK

It quite literally seems like only yesterday that I first tentatively pressed play on episode 1 from the first season..... nervous about not liking it. And now, here we are.... already into the second season, and all my initial hesitation has dispelled like smoke on a windy day. I cannot stress how deeply I truly love this show and how grateful I am that you took that deep dive into this world and encouraged us all to experience this journey with you. It's been a combination of the most surprising and enjoyable adventure I've had through a TV screen in a very long time. Thanks Kali.

Joe

Your write up for these was especially good. It’s obvious the love you have for these characters and these stories. It makes these reactions so great. Excited that you are almost caught up, but sad we will run out of episodes soon and we will all wait together.

I like that shot of the four items on the desk that Fern values. The butterfly hairpin from Frieren, the mirrored lotus bracelet from Stark, the wooden Goddess necklace from Kraft, and the butterfly pouch from Sein.

I specifically put off watching S2 just to watch it here. Its amazing so far!

when the intro hits...mmm...just right

idk if you played clair obscure expedition 33, great game btw, but theres a simple great motto in that game of "For those who come after" and that represents the hero of the south well. he knew he would die, and maybe he would be forgotten by time, but he would carve a path for those who come after him to kill the demon king. good catch with frieren and the other theme of this show which is understanding context better when you look back at something. how she views her journey with her party before was sort of with a "well, that happened" as she continued on with her life, but as we know, later regretted that she didnt treasure himmel more. didnt understand how fleeting her journey with him was. and as she remembers things, she understands better what all those moments meant and how they shape her now. apparently the reason frieren was throwing a tantrum was because they left a chest unopened that i think had a 99% chance of being a mimic, which apparently is how she got her creating shaved ice spell was from a 99% chance chest. that or the chest they didnt open was just a regular chest. either way, with how she is, her tantrum was understandable. i wonder if the red apple to green is a reference to the fact that the group that sings to opening is called "mrs. green apple." im glad stark is getting more of a bigger role this season with the last bit of last pushing him to the side as fern and frieren took their first class mage exams. also, to clear some confusion, stark hasnt asked her on a date before, its just when he "gets her back" or teases her, she reacts like how he imagined usually. also, the reason fern knows frieren took time to pick out her gift to her was because fern was stalking her because she knew she was up to something. great timing btw on things cause when next weeks reaction goes up is the week the last episode for this season will wrap up, so the following week you can finish!

In the opening Himmel is always looking back to check if Frieren is there 😭

HadSkills

The reason why Frieren says this feels familiar in episode one is fantastic, go back and watch the first 5 minutes of season 1 episode 1 and you will see they mirrored it perfectly

PaoloGP

i love your emotional attachment to this show and their characters, very genuine <3

So as someone who consumed the physical manga/books, the introduction of The Hero of the South is one of my most anticipated moments for season 2 especially wanting to learn more about his story. And I can definitely say they delivered because for a side character that was literally only mentioned in passing, to have so much depth and impact the same way Himmel! Its just a refreshing portrayal of the word "Hero". In my own personal interpretation, the Hero of the South (HotS) represents the unsung heroes. Of course he still gets the recognition for being one but not to the same accolades as Himmel (as portrayed in the story that his story isn't as widely known because he didn't land the final blow). And yet his journey played a significant role in ensuring that THE party of Himmel could get the job done. An even bigger revelation is that the HotS could see the future and acknowledges his death. Some fans believe that he could maybe alter his future by simply not showing up OR that even if his future is certain, he still faces death and knowing your time is coming is never going to be easy. We don't know how he reacted during that revelation, but what we do know is that despite all of it, he embraced it. I closely relate to this as someone who takes part in community programs especially coming from a 3rd world country. Most of my peers do community service because its the right thing to do especially in this global climate. I don't necessarily work frontline but I do my part and I know people won't know nor remember us, but we try to do our part in bettering the lives of those who were less fortunate because its just the right thing to do. I think that's what makes Frieren amongst all type of media very close and relatable even in a very fantasy setting, the stories they tell feels very much human.

So episode 1 of season 1 starts off in a very similar way to episode 1 of season 2. In the first season they are riding in the back of a cart after defeating the demon king and they are talking to each other about needing money and having to find jobs. In season 2 they are also riding in the back of a cart and talking about needing money. That's why Frieren says it feels familiar.

Whenever Himmel is on screen there's about a 75% chance I'm going to cry lol

Sky Quest Music Official

I hadn't laughed that hard in a while throughout Freirens whole crying/tantrum scene 🤣 Because these three tend to be allot more calm and reserved it seems, whenever they have a more wild moment like that its so funny, especially Freiren 🤣 It really warmed my soul too that Fern quietly wanted Stark to stay in the party. I was like you in the sense thats I was really happy to see Fern caring allot more about Stark than I think she was comfortable letting on, especially when he made his decision to stick with them rather than go with the other guys party. I REALLY hope their date and whatever else follows goes and works out okay. Idk why or if it makes sense but I'm like....INCREDIBLY nervous about that 😭🤣

Every time you say Frieren was your introduction to anime, I'm always a little bit confused and taken aback and wonder what you mean. Didn't you watch Your Name before starting Frieren? Also, I've noticed for a while now that you have the Sailor Moon series on a shelf behind you, if you're displaying them I think that means you've watched them before right? Is there something more specific you mean when you say Frieren started your anime journey? Because even if you haven't watched a lot before Frieren, it doesn't seem like it's your very first time watching an anime.

M1 Maz

I don't think I've ever watched a series or movie that's as openly hopeful and wholesome ALL the time as this one. And I love it so much for that! It has made for such a cozy, relaxing experience. Always learning and growing, while remembering the past and honoring it. And I think the new intro and outro credits really highlight that so well! Also, your outro of the first episode really got me thinking on memories. And you really are right about how they impact us as we grow up. With each passing year, we see them differently. Sometimes cringing, sometimes with tears, and sometimes with smiles. But as long as we hold onto them, there's always something new to learn or remember. And this series shows that off so beautifully

kaliwali

Frieren is my first anime SERIES ever! I haven't seen any anime series before this one. My anime experience/watches so far are (and in this order): Animatrix, Your Name, A Silent Voice. I loved those last two anime movies so much that I decided to watch more and wanted a series to get into so everyone suggested Frieren and here we are! As for the Sailor Moon manga, those were gifted to me off my Throne by a super generous community member! They bought them off there about 2 weeks after I started Frieren. I've only read book 1 so far, but I love it and hope to pick up the rest in the collection soon! I haven't seen anything Sailor Moon before so the manga is my introduction to it. Hope this answers your questions!

DorkRunner

Ohhhh okay haha. I thought they were a box set of DVDs or something, I didn't know they were the manga and a new addition. Nice :). I hope my question didn't come across as accusatory, I was genuinely curious to know what you meant; I didn't think you were lying or anything. Inconsistencies or discrepancies with what someone says versus what it looks like can often come down to simple differences in perception, so I wanted to know yours! Like, I wondered if maybe you watched Sailor Moon as a kid or something and so maybe thought of it as just another children's cartoon--something like that. I'm still watching your reaction to the first episode of season 2; I kind of chuckled at your reaction to the idea of Stark being recruited. When I watched them for myself last night (I hadn't started in on Season 2 yet because I've been watching other shows, but I wanted to see them for myself first before watching your reaction) I knew you'd react that way, I feel like when Sein left that has made you nervous any time even the possibility of another party member leaving comes up haha. I'm actually kind of starting to watch through Sailor Moon myself. I remember watching some of it as a really young kid a long time ago, and it was definitely just because I had a big crush on Sailor Moon lol. (I had a big thing for blonde's as a kid, like my sister watched Spice Girls and I thought Baby Spice was really cute too). I didn't keep watching it because I was getting disapproving comments from my mom, and I was embarrassed too. Anyway, I don't remember anything from it because I was so little when I watched, it's such a classic anime series and a big part of the culture and some people's history with anime, namely as a show that a lot of girls into anime watched growing up, that I feel like I should actually watch through it at least once. I have to say that without the previous attachment I had to the show of thinking Sailor Moon was cute that it's not managed to grab my interest much so far, but I'm sure after I've watched more of it I'll probably find something to enjoy. (I only have one sibling, a sister, so I can enjoy some "chick flicks" or shows every once in a while and don't feel at all self-conscious about it, even if it usually takes me a bit to get into them.)

Giovanni Velazquez

As I watched season two I couldn’t wait to see your reactions and hear your thoughts especially on certain episodes. And here we are in so excited for you

DorkRunner

My first handful of times watching this intro I didn't quite know what to think of the very fast sequence of cuts of their journey. I knew it probably had to mean something, but I wasn't sure what. (It's made especially difficult by the lack of english lyrics translations.) Upon watching it again for your viewing of the second episode, I think it has come to me; I think the reason we see very rapid bursts of cuts of their journey (with a significantly longer pause lingering on Himmel simply looking at Frieren) because that's how Frieren experienced the journey. "It was only ten years." I think that's how fast it flew by for her, and I think that's why she felt like she hadn't ever really gotten to know the others in her party. That feeling that she didn't really get to know them isn't just because of her aloof nature; I truly think it's because of how she experiences time compared to everyone around her. Ten years to her probably *doesn't* feel like a long enough time to really get to know a person any more than we would feel like we really got to know a person if we only knew them for a week or two of our lives. I think it was Serie, or someone, from last season that talked about how everyone has important decisions that have to be made during their lives, things that for humans cause imminent existential crisis moments, but elves can (and do) postpone them for centuries because that's just how long-lived they are; that definitely has to also affect how they experience the nature and strength of their connections. During the course of the show Frieren will sometimes bring something up, and we (as the viewers) will think "wouldn't this have come up a long, long time ago?" But what if it really didn't? What if it really simply took years for Frieren to think to talk about something that we would think would have been shared after just a few weeks? I do think that this journey she is now on is maybe her learning how to see the world from the perspective of the humans she's come to know and cherish (and be cherished by) in her life; it's her beginning to understand that even though these years feel really fast to her, there are treasures buried in them that she can carry forward with her. A crazy thought I had a few weeks ago is that when Fern and Stark are an old man and woman nearing their deathbeds, Frieren will likely still look the same as she does now. Though Frieren is raising Fern, one day Fern will look and even act like she should be Frieren's mother. And for Frieren, that moment is going to come really fast. This and Frieren's comment about dates to Fern also made me think, you know, to Frieren Himmel probably didn't look much different (age or maturity-wise) than Stark does now. We as the viewer kind of internalize a perspective of Stark being like a "son" to her because Fern is her adopted daughter, and we see Himmel as an "old flame"/romance so to speak, so it's interesting and striking to place Stark beside Himmel and realize that there's really not much difference between them if we were to look at it from Frieren's perspective. We only have the perspective that we do because of the surrounding context and nature of these relationships as they existed in her life when and how they did.

Love your channel and even more so since you also watch anime :) I hope you consider watching Violet Evergarden anytime soon. It's so beautiful and Emotional.

Holy Arathi

Here’s the potentially bad thing with Frieren being your first anime. It is such a cut or 2 above most other anime’s it sets a really high bar for everything that could come after. I think for some it’s really hard not comparing everything beside it.

Holy Arathi

10:00 I mean Fern holds grudges easily…. Until you feed her snacks. Then she’s fine.

Holy Arathi

I love they use the same singer for the ending song as they did in the first season.

PaoloGP

I'm curious did you rewatch any of the episodes? there is always more details to found^^

Holy Arathi

Dude lock that sword up so it stops getting taken.

Michael

I really like the frieren. I think it could be fun to watch you react to Death Note, the anime.

Robert da Spruce

I finally got a chance to get back into more Frieren! As much as I enjoyed the mage trials at the end of season one, I really like the vibe of these opening episodes. Very reminiscent of the early episodes of season one They really are getting much closer now. And really starting to feel like a little family. Just don’t call Frieren the grandma 😊 Romance is in the air! Looking forward to Fern and Stark’s date!

choerrim

I agree with people recommending Violet Evergarden, and I also think Land of the Lustrous is another anime that would be a fun watch with similar emotional touches but a very unique storyline. Also I hope you are able to watch the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once at some point if you haven't yet

BattleMaster

Thanks, I suggested Vio0let Evergarden hehe

With the flower petals, I always felt like the initial one when Frieren is in her white one piece from when she was Flamme's apprentice to represent Flamme herself... and then the 5 in her hands at the end to represent Himmel, Heiter, Eisen, Stark, and Fern.
