Where to even begin writing about how beautiful and jaw dropping this series is so far...

At this point, I trust you all when I'm recommended an anime over and over again. And Violet Evergarden has been on my list since I started Frieren and started getting anime suggestions to begin with! So I went into this one without any trailers, synopsis, or even knowing the general genre it was lol. I just hit send. And wow. After only two episodes, I get why this one is mentioned so often. These episodes were heavily quiet. In a way that makes you look closer and listen harder. Every scene feels deliberate. Every pause feels meaningful. And the MUSIC. It's a whole character of it's own.Violet fascinates me. Watching her reminds me a lot of Frieren. Someone learning how to feel basic human feelings. How to feel love & connection & what it really means. It makes Violet immediately heartbreaking. All she understands are orders. Tasks. Missions. Survival.Major Gilbert's final words, "I love you" changed everything for her. They're words she desperately wants to understand.Words she won't stop searching for in everything she does. There's something so tragic about that. About her. To know a phrase is important and that it clearly matters so much. But to not actually know what it means. The animation is breathtaking.Every frame feels painted.I caught myself constantly feeling like I was in a trance. The way certain scenes swept me away and the music would swell. Two episodes in and I can't help but NEED to know more about Violet. And if this entire story really is about her learning the meaning behind those three final words... I already have a feeling this journey is going to hurt in every best way possible.Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿Want to watch in dub?Sync Along Video Link: https://youtu.be/MHqmbKiisJEI watched this on Netflix in original Japanese with subtitles

I don’t think a series has hooked me so quickly as violet evergarden did when I first watched it that opening scene almost made me cry on my first watch lmao

Howie

It will be my first time watching this. Looking forward to it!

Robert da Spruce

Been wanting to watch this one for a while. Now’s the perfect time to jump in!

Mitchell Hastings

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned a watch order, but it’s generally recommended to do eps 1-4, then the 30-minute OVA/special, then finish eps 5-13. It’s chronological that way, and the OVA helps develop violet’s character more for the rest of the season.

Dude Longcouch

I haven't been able to keep up with a lot of the anime lately, but I'm going to watch this one blind with Kali. Anyone have recommendations for dub or sub? I'm typically a sub guy but I can be persuaded if people feel strongly one way or the other.

LETS GOOOOO! FYI, how netflix has the episodes listed, episode 5 on netflix is not actually the fifth episode. theres an extra episode called "Violet Evergarden Special" thats supposed to be the fifth episode while the fifth one as listed is actually the sixth. very confusing. the reason for that is because "a netflix original series" is a bit of a stretch. they have the rights to the show to have it solely, but they didnt put a dime in production as the show was already made and aired when they acquired it from kyoto animation. you actually watched a movie of theirs already! A silent voice was them, and they have done so many breathtaking animes. they are like the disney of anime with so many people growing up with their shows like the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, air, and my personal favorite Clannad. but even calling them the disney of anime isnt saying enough since theyve stuck to hand drawn animation through the years, but i just mean in how they have inspired and helped so many people. i also learned that one of the two original founders for the company died this year. ;-; theres a nice detail with violet evergarden that since she cant feel with her hands, she will use her face in some way to feel. like when she got the puppy doll, she rubbed it on her face to feel it, and she put the brooch on her mouth to feel that, and maybe another meaning that shes not yet aware of. from the music, the animation itself, this is a STUNNING anime, kyoto animation really pulled all the stops for this. as for violets design with her dress, as one head master would say from spy family, it is elegant! one of my favorite designs. violet is voiced by a favorite actress of mine, yui ishikawa who youved heard somewhat before. she was sahara in a silent voice, the friend who learned sign language and later moved because of bullying, but shes also voiced 2B from nier automata and mikasa akerman from attack on titan. she tends to play characters that are cold and emotionless. 😅

Mitchell Hastings

This is my first time coming back to the show since the first time I watched it. The “burning” speech from the Lt. Col… I had forgotten about that. Oof.

Christian F

You know, I have seen hundreds if not thousands of anime. This is one that just didn't intrigue me at all. I watched the first two or three episodes and I didn't like any moment of the entire experience lol. But that was a while back, I never tried to rewatch it. I'm going to try again here and we'll see how it goes lol.

SgtOddity

Never watched this before! I was cutting onions for dinner so it was kinda blurry when I watched it. Pretty damn good though.

Marcel S

I'm glad that you enjoy this series so far. I will wait until all episodes are available here and then watch them all in one go. The wait will be torture :D

snowyy

Hope you been told to have a box of tissues ready, there is some pretty heavy episodes and moments in this anime :D The music is made by Evan Call, same guy who made the music for Frieren.

Mitchell Hastings

Both are good for this one. If you’re a native English speaker, the dub really makes Violet feel robotic and unnatural with a purely monotone and calculated voice, which for any other anime would be a complaint, but for violet it’s the point of her entire character. There are some scenes later where the dub voice acting has some great emotional moments as well. The sub is solid thru and thru as expected, great emotion and subtlety throughout. So just go with whichever you’re more comfortable in!

kaliwali

I guess I should start keeping tissues around with these kinda comments 😅

kaliwali

oh my goodness, I had no idea about any of this! thank you so much for all the info!!

kaliwali

Oo nice! I hope you enjoy this! And after hearing Mitchell's sub vs dub info.. I'm curious what the dub Violet sounds like now 👀 I may do a rewatch of these episodes tonight

kaliwali

Let me know how it goes! It's always okay to have your own style/taste haha

kaliwali

LOL these were emooootional episodes to begin this mini series. Now I'm very nervous for the rest of it 😅

IsaacDoesStuff

I have bipolar, so that's a big contributor, but I think I probably cried at this show more than any other. And I've watched a looootta stuff. Good luck! :D

Ryan Pork

The Composer for this Anime is the same music composer as Frieren. If you loved the music there you'll love the ones here

BattleMaster

This was a treat to watch. I can't wait for the rest. One of my favourites

DreadPirateRob

Yeah, every episode is emotional. Not all of it is sad though ;) This is my third watch of the show and every time, someone in the house is cutting up onions... I tell ya.

Why It

this freakin show man... i'm only 2 mins into the video and already tearing up.

Sonya

I'm sure this will have been mentioned before, but just in case - the music score for this anime was composed by the same person as Frieren.

hinaru

I've been waiting for this! This is one of the most visually stunning anime I've seen, and I've seen a lot, with an emotional story and amazing music. Kyoto Animation at their peak, they really went all in with this one.

Holy Arathi

Music is done by Evan Call. You should know that name since he did the music to Frieren. And it’s animated by Kyoto Animation, one of the most tragic studios that I can think of.

Florent ZBINDEN

Finally someone mentioning Evan Call ☺️. He’s an american composer living in Japan and completely understand the vibe for anime. Incredible work from him in Frieren and in here for Violet Evergarden. Can’t separate the music from the anime.

Holy Arathi

You are in for a treat and an emotional rollercoaster. Easily the best anime Netflix ever bought.

Howie

Oooh high bar! I've watched Full Metal Alchemist on Netflix! But yeah I like Kyoto Animation so I'm sure I'll enjoy it!

Holy Arathi

Evan Call is for anime what Howard Shore is for live action movies.

Holy Arathi

Yeah the hands are very weird invention in this story because it’s the only high tech stuff that feels out of place for the time period. This is definitely ww1 time period. Very trench warfare, chemical weapon kind of battles.

Holy Arathi

Look… I’m not gay but the blond postman kid…. I’d accept fried noodles any day of the week from him. Like are they joking?

Holy Arathi

45:45 I felt the same way. Violet Evergarden, to me at least, is one of the better anime’s out there. Like in general, on all levels.

eva

It's been a few years since I watched this anime. I remember crying on every episode and even though I've kinda forgotten the details the emotions have stuck with me. It's truly a wonderful anime.

XnathOW

I was watching this with my fiancee, and we kind of dropped it at some point. Not because it wasnt good, its amazing. Ill take this as a good chance to refresh and come back to it.

shido ^-^

"Am I really going to make my self watch Violet Evergarden and sob my eyes out again?" - My thoughts as I hit play and watch it anyway lol

Robert da Spruce

Very intriguing series! A lot of questions to be answered, but I’m digging it so far! The animation style looks great! I like they put a slight haze, making things a more ethereal

Jason

As some others have said there is a recommended watch order. While not crucial, it flows chronologically if you watch them in this order. Most important is don't watch the Movie until the end as it's the last of the story (as far as we know). Violet Evergarden Season 1: Episodes 1-4 Violet Evergarden Special Violet Evergarden Season 1: Episodes 5-13 Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll Violet Evergarden: The Movie Violet Evergarden: Recollections is just a recap of episodes 1-13. You can skip it. As far as Violet's past and where she came from, it's never really explained. Even in the light-novels a little more of her past is revealed, but still leaves most of it very much a mystery. In the end her story really starts when Dietfried Bougainvillea finds her and brings her to Gilbert.

MaxZR

Finally 😭 I (among many others apparently) knew that you’d love this one. Everything about this show is just so mesmerizingly beautiful and it’s another example of an already breathtaking piece of art that got elevated to a monumental masterpiece by Evan Call and his brilliant compositions.

Sam

please watch linked Park : lost same animations !

Waiting4Erik

Violet Evergarden is KyoAni’s Letter of Love to the world. There is so much love that shines through in every aspect of this anime. This is what happens when an animation studio famed for putting heart into their stories decides to make Art. While the Violet Evergarden: Special takes place chronologically between episodes 4 & 5, it’s a more powerful emotional experience if watched after the season is finished. On the one hand it fills in a lot of Violet’s growth between the two episodes, on the other hand parts of the Special will have more emotional weight if viewed after the season. There’s no right or wrong way to view it, as long as you watch it. It’s one of the best episodes. Don’t skip it.

Darian Harman

I've just accepted the fact that I am always going to bawl my way through this.

Schroecat

This is honestly the best anime of the last decade, and it isn't remotely close.

Yolanda Castillo

I love KyoAni so much. Their animation has always been great even when the material isn't at all serious. They just give everything so much time and attention. One of the reasons a lot of the KyoAni works aren't on crunchyroll these days is because of KyoAni 's working model and how it lets the company have an incredible work environment for the anime world. Anime as an industry has most people severely overworked and underpaid as contractors. KyoAni works are made entirely in house, so all the animators are paid on salary. It also has a reputation for a progressive, worker-friendly environment. They are known for having more women on staff and having them in more prestigious roles than other anime studios. They even have paid maternity leave! So whenever they make deals for streaming rights to their shows they will always prioritize a contract that pays the studio well. They fund and own all their IP so they don't have to share a lot of the profits, and that gives them the freedom to work the way they do. So while other animation studios crank out 2-3 anime per season to scrape a living KyoAni can release 1-2 projects a year while still paying their employees, taking time to make a good product, and not having to overwork their animators.

Yolanda Castillo

There's a lot of stuff from the original novels they could only vaguely hint at in the series, Violet is a real girl lol. You are more right following the thought that this was the only life she has ever known. She was found by the majors brother when his ship had to stop at this deserted Island for maintenance. Someway somehow she survived here as a wild child of unknown age and origin (gives me Tarzan vibes lol). Men being men seeing this little pretty girl tried to attack her and she, being a wild feral child, killed them. So the military ended up keeping her and training her to kill as a tool for them. (in the novels there is also talk of orphan children being kidnapped by the military and experimented on then abandoned if the experiments didn't work so its possible she could also be one of these children experiments that managed to survive being left on this remote island)

Yolanda Castillo

And of course being raised to be a tool in the military doesn't exactly give someone a good relationship with their sense of self or their emotions.

What a show again! Thank you, Kali, not just for this, but also for introducing me to something I kept pushing off, watching it myself.

Billy Dancel

Violet Evergarden is a series worth seeing in its entirety with you. I'm sorry to say this but you're stuck with me now. LOL This beautiful story is worth falling in love with it all over again.
