Yep. I love this one already.

Going in, I knew nothing other than people have been very passionately recommending this to me for YEARS. Even before my recent deep dive down the anime rabbit hole. When a series gets THAT much hype, it always makes me a little nervous going in. But so far, you all haven't led me astray a single time!I understand immediately why all wanted me to experience this story. The sounds, the music, the dialogue, the adventure, the fun, the journey.I'm already so into it!Aang is impossible not to love. He's so much fun and adventurous and silly. He feels like the monk version of Luffy 🤣 But under all of his childlike wonder, there's this deeper sadness and anxiety that surrounds him. Watching him discover what actually happened to his village while he was trapped in ice was heartbreaking. It feels like one moment he's laughing and playing and riding penguins, and the next he's carrying the weight of an entire civilization on his super young shoulders. A weight he mentions he never asked for...I also already adore Katara. Her kindness. Her warm energy. She feels like the emotional anchor of this group, while Sokka had me laughing the whole way. The two of them are such an awesome balance to Aang's energy. And then there's Zuko. I already find him super fascinating even tho we're only a few episodes in. I feel like under all of that anger and determination, there's glimpses of a boy desperate to prove something to his father. To himself. Right now, I'm standing at the beginning of what feels like a super long and fulfilling journey. When an intro starts us off by opening a map... I'm already in it for the long haul 😍 I think this adventure is going to be something really special.

Awww man. I remember this show Every Saturday morning on channel 5, at 9am 1 whole hour of "Avatar: The last Air Bender"... dammit Kaliwali, you are going to make me cry with this nostalgia 🥲

TChang23

This just made my day! ATLA is a generational story that’s a must watch I’m so glad you’re enjoying it so far!

Cephandrius

You are on a crazy streak with these new series. ATLA is one of my biggest childhood staples and it has aged very well.

Lyon

Perfect timing I just took my lunch and might be 20 mins late to finish this video but it's worth

Kali, you are going to fucking love this show. Alright, time for me to go into my spiel about cartoons and animation. The word "cartoon" actually derives from the Italian word "cartone" in the era of the renaissance. It was originally used to describe pieces of art that were preparatory sketches and works created on thick paper stock to be displayed. As we approached the 20th century, the word became associated with the style seen in newspapers: simplified figures with quick, often political, messaging. Once we moved into the era of early animation and early Disney, the term was applied to all animated content in general. At that point, everything was considered a cartoon just by merit of how the word evolved, with no slight intended. It is a common misconception that cartoons were always for children. Many early animations were actually intended for general theater audiences, such as the "Termite Terrace" productions (Warner Bro, Bugs Bunny and that whole universe). There were several competing groups in that era(Hanna-Barbera(Flintstones, Jetsons), Rankin/Bass(Claymation Christmas shorts), UPA(mr. magoo), MGM(Tom and Jerry)) and the general public used "cartoons" to describe animation and the broader graphic storytelling methods being developed. In Japan, they were always interested in the medium, though America was the clear world leader in animation at the time. Japan essentially signed on and started working on their own styles, which we currently are in the midst of experiencing with the other shows you're watching. Since they speak Japanese, their word for animation is simply "anime." They have no history or derivation from the word "cartoon," just as a matter of history and linguistic development. Western and American animation "yō anime" There really isn't anything deeper to the term than that, though "anime" has become associated with the higher quality. I understand why: a lot of American animation isn't given much attention or funding, and stories that would be perfect for the medium simply aren't being made here. It feels like an abandoned industry in the U.S., whereas Japan took the medium and essentially mastered it. We tended to focus on children's audiences and 3D animation or for humor. I don't personally have an issue with 3D, but I also love 2D animation and I don't want it to disappear just because 3D exists. They can complement each other; 3D animation certainly has its place and offers great instances of art, but 2D animation is just unparallelable. Nowadays, "cartoon" is often looked at negatively because much of American animation has become "slop" pushed out as fast as possible with very little artistry. Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the sole exceptions. Even though the in-between animations were done in Korea, the production work was done by Americans. I still count it as American animation, and I'm proud of it for that reason. Whether it is animation or live action, regardless of any of that, it is one of the best stories that has ever been made into a show. Period. I don't know if that is a hot take, but I feel like it is not, honestly. It is just that good. Maybe at some point you can watch the Shyamalan version—that thing that he called a movie. We don't like to talk about it too much, but it would probably be fun to watch your reaction to it. The Netflix show honestly suffers from what often happens with these projects: the people making it at Netflix look at it as a children's show that they need to "fix," and they end up ruining everything about it. A great example of this is in the beginning of the show you just watched, the intro where Katara and Sokka find Aang and have that little quarrel demonstrated Katara's waterbending abilities and set up Sokka and her character for the long term. They set up the conflict between them and illustrate that Sokka may not be the most comfortable with women . They completely sterilize that from the Netflix show and remove it from his character, even though, as you will see as you watch, it is utterly vital to the character of Sokka and is absolutely a part of his character arc. We also get a glimpse of Katara's burgeoning waterbending abilities with a glimpse of great power, but it has a bit of serendipity to it. I wouldn't recommend watching the live-action show, but if you do, you'll see that they don't go that direction with it at all. It is just a constant stream of decisions made for the worse by the Netflix producers. The creators of the show, who I trust implicitly, actually disassociated themselves from the Netflix project, which should tell you everything you need to know. They completely disregarded that excellent storytelling for no reason at all, simply because they think they know better—and they don't. I'm not a fan of the live action, especially the movie by Shamealame. Sorry, this was a freaking long one.

Justyn

This is seriously one of the best shows of the 21st century

Steve Mercier

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet...

Jojo Garlin

Just a little fyi because it’s never clearly stated in the show you just have to pick up on it. the arrow Tattoos on Aang does not symbolize he’s the avatar. The Arrows symbolize when a Airbender has become a Master (Similar to how a Jedi Knight becomes a Jedi Master) The arrows mean Aang is an Airbending Master

Dude Longcouch

This is a great day. Been waiting for this since the first day I subscribed to Kali :D

PhoenixVoyager

I'll have to watch this when I get home from work but yes... This show is absolute S tier, 10/10 show. It immediately hooks you in and it makes you just want to binge it all 😅 The humor, action, emotional moments... It all is beyond amazing. I remember being a kid watching this when it first came out, even one of my parents who never watched animated shows back in the day, couldn't wait for the next episode to come around. 😅 We can't emphasize enough how much this show meant to a generation of children and adults who watched it live as it was coming out. PEAK animated show ❤️😁😁

Kristoffer

I would more call this a cartoon. But man this is gonna be an amazing journey!

Chuckles1004

Here we go! The classic, the Iconic ATLA!! Yayy!! Thank you Kali!

Andrew Crabtree

It may be an animated series but the actual animation is just as good and sometimes even better than anime avatar is very famous for its art styles and animations

Ancientswords

Aang growing up before a 100 year war really makes him a weird character in that world haha. He is not used to war, he just wants to have fun and be a normal child basically xD

La Baanga

Glad you're reacting to this one. Even when I saw it for the first time all those years ago, I remember being struck by how this kids' show instinctively trusted its audience to understand weighty themes. So many shows try to demonstrate they can be "mature", usually with shock value. But ATLA understands that if the emotions of the characters ring true, the audience will follow you willingly to some dark places narratively.

Andrew Crabtree

Oh my gosh I forgot how much I needed uncle iroh such a sight to see again a true og

DragonFireCK

When Aang is talking about the Avatar to Katara, he says "I didn't know the Avatar, but I knew people who knew him" he is hiding the truth, but also not *quite* lying. Do you really know yourself like you know other people? "Previous Ons" are nice if its something I'm going to watch intermittently over a long time period, such as TV shows or a series of movies. I may not remember some of the important details, or missed them originally, week to week, let alone year to year. Showing a brief overview of the important details from earlier episodes, especially when you're going to go back to something that came up many episodes ago. When I'm binge watching a show, I tend to skip them to speed up the watching. I didn't watch the original cartoon until well into adulthood as it came out when I was just old enough to not really watch Nick anymore. The cartoon *really* holds up well, with plenty of kid-friendly fun while dealing with very heavy topics. The live action movie gets a lot of hate, and while I feel its mediocre, I feel its better than lot of people let on; its a far cry from the cartoon. I do need to watch the Netflix live action remake as well. Do you have any plan to watch any of those remakes? Are you planning to watch Legend of Korra as well? I didn't like it as much as The Last Airbender, but it was still pretty good. Mostly, I tend to dislike the heavy mixing of industrial tech and magic.

mitchhamilton64

lol shes just watched the first 3 episodes of avatar, lets let her enjoy AT LEAST the first season before recommending the live action movie, the live action show, or korra. also, the live action movie is teeeeeerrrrrrrriiiiiiibbbbbbllle. it is awful, even if its not an adaptation of one of my favorite shows, it is god awful

Garrick Smalley

You mentioned the live action movie... Or did you mention the live action tv show? I like the tv show but I have some problems with it. The movie by M. Night should not exist and is unholy. You may need to watch it just to understand how horribly wrong it is. So very glad you are watching one of THE best animated shows ever.

mitchhamilton64

really an amazing show. the first season is more lighthearted and kid friendly. i remember actually watching this when it premiered and watching all 4 episodes at once since it was the pilot episodes. i was watching something, dont remember what when the announcer was like "and now the first episode of a new series" and i thought, sure, why not. had id seen any promotion for this show, i dont think i wouldve watched it since i wouldve assumed it was anime and anime wasnt my style back then. glad i didnt because it is one of my favorite shows. eventually i lost cable partway into season 2 and had to know what happened so i bought slowly the single dvd's they had. i cant remember how many episodes they had but it was 4 separate dvds for 1 season and math is hard but slowly waiting for those so i could watch the show, and slowly collecting the bonus comics that came with those, what memories. and i own the 3 separate box dvds for seasons 1 to 3. what im saying is, im a fan. you will enjoy this, such an incredible series with amazing messages. some fun facts, sokka was originally meant to be way more serious but jack desena improvised and was funny and they let him just cut loose for sokka. also, the "previously on avatar" didnt start until like the middle of season 2 and i would recommend for the most part, at least later to skip them. because theres times when itll go "previously on avatar" and show a character who hasnt been shown in a long time and we have no idea what happened to them for a while but wasnt really wondering about either. it just sort of makes you go "oh them! oh, theyre most likely gonna show up in this episode since theyre showing them again in the recap." another fact, i think "the southern air temple" is one of, if not the only episode that doesnt use the usual title card to say the title episode. momo in japanese means peach, the fruit he stole from sokka at the end. its interesting you mistakenly called katara kaya at the end because that was originally her name before they changed it. last fun fact, iroh is going to be your favorite. :)

Holy Arathi

Idk. I love and not quite so much love this show. It’s classic, it’s fun, it has pretty decent characterization and growth. But… there’s a ton of contrivances strewn across this whole show. As a kid it’s great. As an adult who’s watched shows for decades I scratch my head a lot watching it. It’s still fun, if you turn your brain off sometimes…. And it’s a lot better than Legend of Korra.

Ben

The Netflix live action isn't horrible, but it definitely has its fair share of problems. The OG series is amazing though, you're in for a treat :))

Sky Quest Music Official

YEEESSS! Oh I'm SOOOO excited for this! This show was so well done in everyway dude. One of the more prominent voice actors in this said they didn't think this show would work originally because it was too smart. It was indeed smart as hell but it worked! It worked SOOOO well. You're Gonna love this journey!

Holy Arathi

Uncle Iroh is pretty much everyone’s favorite character.

Garrick Smalley

For a retired general he is very retired. Yes, yes he is, also very wise.

Ancientswords

Fun fact: Momo is Japanese for peach and he called the Lemur Momo in the spur of the moment there because he took the peach back from Sokka

James Park

I never got around to watching this show yet looking forward to watching with you

Wutai

Wow Kali, bangers after bangers! What did we do to deserve such treatment 😂

Onno Smits

I agree with you; The music in this is incredible. For what is essentially a kids show, it has no business being this well-produced. Some really cool and eccentric instruments take center stage in the orchestration, like an Armenian Duduk and the Chinese Erhu and Guzheng. I love this show. The worldbuilding is incredible. It's a bit childish (especially the first dozen episodes), but you've already found out how that's part of the charm! Very much looking forward to more next week!

eladrin22

Hi, just a suggestion in case no one else has said it. This isn't a big issue in book 1 but at the start of episodes there is a recap. This can end up getting a bit spoilery, so even though it means skipping the intro, I kinda suggest jumping to the title card and starting from there. Just a suggestion though.

Justyn

ive rewatched this probably a dozen times at this point and i never get sick of it. the exposition and visual/environmental storytelling and characterization of the cast and world in just the first 60 minutes of screentime is so well done. its amazing how tight and digestible the dialogue is for someone of any age despite being having such complex and general topics like war and loss and hope for the future.

tv tv

The best action cartoon Nickelodeon ever made

Isaiah L

YESSSS! You are doing Avatar reactions, I'm so happy!! I promise this show won't disappoint. Avatar holds a special place in my heart.

YYZHawk

Welcome to the GOAT show of western animation :)

Irrelevance - Bjorn Vanbelleghem

Thank you, Kali! Epic good show this. Been here a bit less, because I've been watching almost all of the World Cup Football.

Vry36

If Avatar makes the cut then Arcane makes the cut as an "anime" Unless you've already seen it.

Jacob

So genuinely excited for this one

kaliwali

oooh okay! good to know, thank you!

choerrim

so exciting, I never get bored of rewatching this!! the world building is top tier and the journey it takes you on through its runtime with the characters and events is unforgettable—genuinely a transformative show

Maria

i haven’t seen this in sooo long. excited to re-watch it with you, you’ll love it!!

MorahSDG

Let's goooooo! Avatar is the best, so excited. Season 1 is definitely very enjoyable, but it's also definitely the most "This is a kid's show, so we gotta be careful what subjects we tackle", but it absolutely matures and goes super deep. Something that only gets better as we go, without losing any of the heart. Can't wait to see you tackle this. It's sorta a "Don't think about it too much, it's not that deep" type thing, but the swirl pattern of the statues I always felt was something where like they probably just have to move the statues every few decades, whenever an Avatar passes. And maybe the tower gets a new top layer when enough Avatars fill up a whole "ring" on it. So every few hundred years, they've gotta renovate lol

Josue

Can't believe you never watched this before. Absolute classic. This show has aged so well. In time, your questions will be answered.

PG Modehouse

I love the variety of Asian influences of this show. So much inspiration and influence from North Asian/East Asian/South Asian art and history. The Southern Water tribe's outfits appear to be modeled on Yupik, Sireniki, and Inuit culture. The Fire Nation's armor is inspired by both Samurai Armor and Thai Armor, especially those cool shoulder pieces. The armbands worn during the Agni-kai resemble the Prajjad armbands worn in Muay Thai. Agni is also the Sanskrit word for fire, and the name of the elemental fire deity in Hinduism. Aang and the Air Nomads robes are based on Buddhist Monk's robes in monasteries across Asia such as Bodh Gaya in India, Kye Gompa in Tibet, and the Shaolin Temple in China.

Paul Wright

Since you mentioned Jedi's, I wanna say the director of this season, Dave Filoni, went on to work on the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated show, and he's now the president of Lucasfilm.

KuroDaKing

Omg yes my favorite series thank you thank you

Paul Wright

Did I cry when I read this outro? Yes Did I cry while watching this reaction? Yes Will I cry when I watch this reaction again? Yes All tears of joy. You're absolutely cooking with content, KaliWali and I'm so glad to see you continue this journey.

Robert da Spruce

I honestly thought you were going to start watching the live action series when you announced it 😂 Have never seen the cartoon. I have seen the 2010 movie. Which wasn’t that bad IMO. Not as bad as everyone says As far as the cartoon goes, I like it so far. I see a lot of inspiration from Buddhism. And maybe I’m reading into it too much. But Ang’s playful nature reminds me of the Dalai Lama. Who is also very playful and childlike in personality

Andrew Crabtree

I also would like to point out something that might not have been said or talked about but I don’t know if you’ve seen the robin williams movie hook where Williams plays as pan and has to relearn to be pan and gets taken back to Neverland and the person in charge of the lost boys ru ru ru rufffff ruffffio ruffio the same actor who plays him is the voice actor who plays zukko the fire nation prince and to some of us it added so much more nostalgia I don’t know if the animator decided to copy some of the Ruffio character and outfit and color scheme into zukko but once you learn it’s him it’s hard not to see

Malcolm Ferguson

I don't believe any movie or show is perfect, but this one is about as close as one can get, IMO. I'm so excited to see you experience it for the first time! Fun fact - Commander Zhao is voiced by Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy, among countless other iconic roles. The live-action Netflix series is OK. It can't hold a candle to this show, and I definitely have my issues with it, but there are also things about it I really liked. It's not nearly as good as the One Piece live-action, but I would still say it's better than most live-action adaptations. I'd say there would be no harm in giving it a chance once you've finished the original series. The 2010 live-action movie by M. Night Shyamalan, on the other hand, is an unholy abomination that should be burnt at the stake. Avoid it at all costs. Regarding "previously on" segments - I'm generally not a big fan of them, unless I'm coming back to a show I haven't watched in a while and need a refresher. My biggest problem with them is that I find they tend to spoil things that happen in the episode, like characters returning, etc.

DontBmad

avatar is such a great show.. starts off more kidish but get way better by season 3

Armchair Rizzard

I'm 37 and this is my favorite cartoon of all time. I watched it when it first came out and everybody in my life, all my friends, loved it too.

Creamish

you think you love it after only 3 episodes. You have no IDEA how amazing it gets.

Chris Truex

I'm very excited for your journey here!... but beware the comments. Not because they'll be nasty, but because in my experience, ATLA fans get really... REALLY excited about discussing the show, and some can't always stop themselves from saying "Character X is my favorite because he gets really good in season 2" or "Oh man, I can't wait until you get to episode x of season y, it'll blow your mind!" That kind of accidental spoiler. Or people defending their stans/ships that only really come into their own in the third season, when you've barely met characters. (I say this because there are ABSOLUTELY episodes I can't wait for you to get to, and characters I want to enthuse about) Your reactions are great because you react honestly and sincerely based on your viewing experience, and I just want to make sure you don't accidentally get spoiled!

Dude Longcouch

You were right on when you were saying that just knowing you are a bender doesn't mean you automatically know how to use it. In the ATLA universe, bending is a martial art. And martial arts take years to master. And you pretty much need to have a good teacher. AND you have to be born with the inherent ability in the first place. It's kinda like being a Jedi in that way. Regarding your questions about the live action adaptations, I personally think none of them are worth your time. The M. Night Shyamalan movie is legendarily bad (even the wikipedia page says it is considered to be one of the worst movies of all time lmao). I left the theater from that movie mad at the universe for doing that to my beloved show. The Netflix series is... okay. It's not as bad as the movie, but I still don't think it's great. Watch if you want, but I would personally recommend waiting until you're finished with the animated show, and going in with tempered expectations.

Kristoffer

Kali I want you to know how much you really mean to a lot of us including me. I have been watching you since the Red Dead Redemption 1 days, I discovered you because RDR2 and Arthur Morgan are my favourite game and character of all time, but I have stuck around and even subscribed numerous times to your patreon because I have truly found a once in a lifetime let’s player and reactor. And I’m not just saying that lightly you are legit the best at those 2 particular aspects I have ever seen and I have seen a lot, the closest is “Bowskii” on YouTube but he sadly isn’t consistent enough to compete. You mean a lot to me, and whenever you post something, that I am interested in I will always give it a watch recently it’s been X-Men and now Avatar: The Last Airbender. You are just so authentic and after getting insights through your RDR2 playthrough into your real personal life (Which is the best playthorugh I have ever seen) I have just fell completely in love with you as a person. You see all the little details while also remaining fun and engaging. It’s very rare, and my hole point of this message is actually just to reinforce your want to actually post what you really care about, instead of posting random content you know will appeal to the most people. While I’m not one of the persons who are watching your anime content, I know you have had problems with weirdos or whatever the polite term is for them, who have complained about your new found devotion to it. And I just want you to know that we people that don’t like anime are actually here and support your decision to watch even tho we don’t watch it personally. What will always be the most important part is that you actually want to watch what you react to, because that will in turn make it more engaging and fun for us to watch! Keep going and I look forward to exploring the Last Airbender Universe with you, and whatever movies you have planned next. Love you ❤️

Michael Montijo

Up to you, but I've seen some reactors skip the "previously on avatar" segments because sometimes it kinda spoils what you might see in the episode. They are good recaps if you need a memory refresh, but sometimes they do allude a little too much to what you are about to watch. So food for thought! If you like them, no shame in watching them, but just thought you should be aware.

Jaron95

Dave Filoni, co-creator of The Clone Wars & other Star Wars animated projects, and now-President and Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, has a lot of directing and storyboard credits across Avatar. His work here led to being recruited by George Lucas.

Clifton

man Aang reminds me of Luffy a tad bit

dave

Never noticed before, but seeing you two side by side you kinda look like Katara. Just missing the hair loopies and blue eyes.

Yolanda Castillo

I second this! Since it was a kids show that used to be on a weekly basis the recap tends to be really in your face with the foreshadowing to an adult who can pick up on more subtle context clues that kids might not be able to.

Yolanda Castillo

I feel like the reason the fire nation destroyed the air benders in the first place was because they wanted to quickly get the reincarnation cycle going again so that way the avatar can reincarnate back into the fire nation and be raised as a weapon for the fire nation in this war. But since no one has seen any avatar in a hundred years some people had the (not so crazy it turns out!) conspiracy that the air bender avatar was still out there in hiding. Hence why Zuko was looking for an old old man in episode 1.

UTU49

Avatar is a great addition to your YouTube Channel and Patreon. It's animated, and it's stylistically very similar to true anime, but I think there are a lot of people who watch Avatar, who don't watch a lot of anime.

docile cat

Id love if someone could sound byte her "got em" for the boomerang return. I think the softness would have an impact.
