Seeing more of Violet's past after spending so much time watching her write beautiful letters.. was honestly shocking. The way she moved on the battlefield. Completely expressionless. Taking down person after person without hesitation. It almost didn't feel like I was watching the same character. She was so insanely lethal..While Violet slipped into darkness after learning about Major's death.. It made me realize how isolating a loss can be. We do anything to take it back and deny it at first. We bargain. We yell and scream and get angry. We slip into ourselves.. Into the darkness. It's never a straightforward checklist either. These emotions fade in/out and this show did an incredible job at showing Violet dealing with all of these emotions. Dealing with a loss. After seeing the flashbacks of Violet with the Major in their final moments, I can't help but wonder if their love is romantic or nurturing. Maybe it was the love of someone who desperately wanted to protect a child who had been forced to grow up in war far too soon. His sad eyes say so much. Although.. that line about beautiful eyes still has me wondering if those feelings slowly became something more.I'm not sure.. But one thing I'm completely sure of now is that he did love her. Deeply. No matter what form that love took, he cared about Violet with everything he had. From the bottom of his heart. This show continues to surprise me. Every episode somehow finds another beautiful way to explore the sadder parts of life. Loss, lost love, healing. Honestly, these might be my favorite two episodes yet.See you all next week for more!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿WANT TO WATCH IN DUB?Sync Along Video Link: https://youtu.be/QTtEJeZYonoI watched this on Netflix in original Japanese with subtitles

Happy 4th of July Kaliwali and PATREON FAM! 🇺🇸

These could be my two favorite episodes so far since they gave Violet’s backstory and it's been what I’ve been waiting for. I've been waiting to share this for a while but it's probably most appropriate now given Violet's backstory: I'm a huge Japan-phile and I've been studying Japanese for a few years now. Almost always in manga/anime, the Japanese word for love is 好き ( sounds like ski) and it could mean love or really like. But that same word could also be used for objects and non humans. For example, “I love ice cream or love cats.” But the Major didn't use that Japanese word. The word love used by him towards Violet is 愛する and it’s very intense and romantic and usually only used by married couples or lovers (and never for objects/non humans). So yes the major really did love Violet. And all these episodes she has been trying to understand what that kind of love means.

I didn't even notice you were clearing your throat until you mentioned it. Too engrossed in your reaction to this show I love. Lol.

BattleMaster

Old man came in clutch this episode. So good.

The music is amazing. It matches the tone and amplifies the impact of every scene. If anyone hasn’t mentioned it before, the composer for this anime, Evan Call, did the score for Frieren. The guy is legit.

kaliwali

yess it's so good! and he really is a genius!

kaliwali

okay good! 😅 glad you're enjoying these uploads!!

kaliwali

Oh wow.. Thank you so much for explaining this! It adds so much more meaning and changes my confused thoughts at the end of episode 9 completely! So, it is very much a romantic love that he has for Violet ❤️ That makes these episodes even more beautiful but also hurt more as well haha. Thank you so much for taking time to explain! I think it's beautiful and amazing that there are different words for love in Japanese. I guess it's time to download Duolingo ✨

I'm glad we were able to see the two episodes in one sitting - I think they are also my favorites. 愛=love in Japanese can be used in the same way as in English, it can mean romantic love, but it can also mean parental love, brotherly love, or compassionate love. So I think the connotation is kept intact when it's translated to "I love you."

DreadPirateRob

Interesting! The meaning is lost in translation to English but conveyed in the music. I was going to comment that the music betrays the real feelings.

DreadPirateRob

Yeah, his music is amazing. Zoltraak (yes, that is the name of the score LOL) was performed live at Wembley Arena back in May along with a bunch of the other Frieren scores. Just search YouTube for "Frieren OVO Arena Wembley Concert" if you want to see.

The theme that's playing while Violet is trying to save Gilbert in the fortress has to be one of the saddest and most beautiful pieces of music I've heard in any media. Oh my goodness. It feels like the world is ending

Howie

Hey Sonya, what you said it true about Kanji word 愛 but in the progressive verb conjugation 愛している which is what the Major said to Violet, it almost always means romantic love. If you don’t believe me you can easily look it up.

It helps to keep in mind that this is an adaptation of the light novels. While the love is clearly romantic in the light novels, the anime is painstakingly careful to depict the deeper love in their relationship. This makes the nature of their love ambiguous and harder to categorize in the anime while shifting focus to the actual acts of love. And the actual acts of love speak to a love that is much deeper than romance yet also more basic. It is sacrificial love, the greatest love. Violet is willing to die to save Gilbert. And after watching Violet sacrifice her arms trying to save him, Gilbert tells her to live, to be free, and “I love you.” It’s heartbreaking, Violet’s response that she doesn’t understand. So with his final act Gilbert shows Violet what it means to love: laying down one’s life for another.

The reason Violet doesn't go looking for Gilbert in the beginning is that early version of Violet only understands literal instructions/orders. She was told that Gilbert was alive and she needed to stay with Hudgens. It's also the same reason she's an emotion-less battle-machine in the beginning. She didn't understand emotions or what she was doing, only that she was supposed to do what she was told to do. The version that is coming out now is the Violet that is learning to feel and express her emotions as you can see.

Please watch 86…

kaliwali

I've listened to Zoltraak so many times but I haven't seen the Wembley Concert of it being performed!

Kal

I was going to comment on this, but you did so much more eloquently than I would have, another thing to note, it's that in Japanese culture, familial love is usually shown through responsibility, actions or attentions rather than said verbally or shown physically, which to western cultures might come off as cold or emotionless, when it's really just a different way to express it.

Schroecat

86 is a fantastic recommendation, but maybe one to wait a few weeks on after Violet Evergarden. Too much intensity all at once can undermine some shows.

Schroecat

It' so good! Although it's definitely the one that makes me cry the most. Like bawling my eyes out ugly crying. Its placement is in the story is perfect after Violet's acceptance of Gilbert's loss, her realisation that she's *not alright*, and also now understanding that she can make a positive impact in the world. This is the only place in the series this episode *could* have landed.

I may be overstepping here, but imho... the reason that Violet's trauma on the ship is not explored is because the studio that animated Violet Evergarden is Kyoto Animation. They are a highly respected studio, and I personally feel like they tend to stay away from SA. They'll explore suicide or physical assault though, for some reason. Maybe it's just one bridge too far for them? KyoAni is a paragon among anime studios. They tend to employ a larger percentage of women than other studios, they will take on people that have little to no experience in animation and train them at their school. Are they perfect? No company can be... but I feel like they strive to not be wastes of carbon. I truly hope you'll watch the two movies after the end of the series. While one is a true side story that just involves Violet... the finale movie is the swansong for the series. The finale was delayed because of the "Kyoto Animation Fire" (go ahead and look it up, it was devastating but also shows the perseverance of the human spirit). Violet's final chapter was the first animation that KyoAni released after the fire... it is truly beautiful ("utsukushii", as Violet learned) in so many ways.
