There's something really special about Violet Evergarden that just feels comforting, even when it's making me cry my eyes out. It has a quiet charm to it that makes me slow down, take in the scenery and appreciate the little things for a bit. And this movie felt like a really beautiful extension of the series by keeping that same vibe!

I loved Violet and Amy's friendship.They're almost complete opposites on the surface, but underneath so alike.They both had their futures decided for them long before they were ever given a choice.They both had to survive in worlds that never really felt like home.And it was really sweet how comforting they found each other's presence after awhile.And I love how Taylor discovered her dream through something as simple as receiving a letter. I loved the idea that one letter could completely change the direction of someone's life. That happiness, that connection, that hope.. All in a letter. And instead of keeping it to herself, she wanted to spend her life delivering that same feeling to other people. It's such a beautiful way to look at what letters really are. It also reminded me why I began content creating to begin with.. To give back the same spark of happiness and share it with others.I was fully prepared to cry my eyes out again during this movie after what the series put me though LOL. I kept waiting for the ball to drop. For Evan Call to blast air into my eyes. But instead, this story left me smiling. It was emotional but gentle, wholesome, and just... hopeful.By the end, I found myself wanting to write someone a letter. In a world where everything is instant, there's something so beautiful about taking the time to put your feelings on paper and trusting they'll make their way to someone you care about. I left this movie feeling grateful and warm.I think that's a pretty wonderful feeling to carry into the rest of my weekend!See you all in the final movie next week 🤍Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/MIW_5lrizroI watched this on Netflix

Kali, I cannot tell you how much I've enjoyed rewatching all of these with you. You gave me a chuckle every time you said "they're just friends, right?" There is a genre of anime called "yuri", which is the Japanese word for "lily". It is a genre that has to do with women loving women. There are a lot of types of yuri, one of which people call "subtext", and Japanese people call it "soft yuri" or "yuri work". It shows relationships that seem to delve deeper than normal western friendships between women, but where one or both women end up in het relationships. Also, in Japan it is quite common for friends to bathe together. Public baths are a very popular cultural way to spend bonding time together as friends and family. I look forward to you watching the final movie... Kyoto Animation was working on it when the arson attack happened that unfortunately took the lives of 36 staff members, and injured 34 more. It delayed the movie and multiple series for years, but Violet's finale was the first piece they finished after they reopened. It's truly a special piece of media.

"This one is a lot more light" Yeah, still didn't stop me from crying again. Haha. Thanks for sharing you experience with us, I love this show and glad you loved it too. I also appreciate your analysis of the content you watch, shows that you're really absorbing it and appreciating the art. It's a fun discussion.

FYI, theres a bit of an extra thing at the end of the next movie after the credits. i think taylor didnt want to meet amy yet because she wanted to show her when she was ready that she was okay. that amy didnt just give up her life for nothing, that taylor can take care of herself and she believes that she would accomplish that when shes fully ready to deliver letters on her own. next week. the end of the violet evergarden journey. ;-;

For content I never seen before, I normally try to watch it before your reaction, so it would be a re-watch for me. But for this, I watched it for the first time along with you. Yeah, it was a pleasant experience and like you said, sweet and wholesome (unlike some of the heavier anime episodes). Some one else already commented on this, but in Asia, it's not uncommon for people to bathe together (especially same gender family and close friends). Today, there are public bath houses, hot springs and spas for this. So even though the fictional location of this anime is a very Western European setting, it's still very traditionally Japanese in many ways. That being said from what heard about this story, in the original novel, Amy/Isabelle had romantic feelings for Violet (and it was unrequited). But for this movie, they deliberately toned it down so it's up to interpretation.

Thank you so much for explaining! I was wondering the whole time what was really going on hahaha I definitely felt the deeper friendship than normal western friendships, but didn't understand if there was truly a deeper meaning or not. So thank you for explaining "yuri" (which makes me think of spy x family lol)! I feel like every anime I watch I'm learning a new genre of anime. It's crazy how many there are! I hadn't heard of the Kyoto Animation arson attack so I looked it up.. That's so tragic and sad 🤍 I'm excited to watch the final movie in the series, too.

I just realized Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is releasing next Tuesday! So to not burn out.. I'll push the final Violet Evergarden movie to the following week 🤍 I'm excited for both tho!!

kaliwali

I love that they kept it open to interpretation like that!

So funny thing, yuri for the genre is spelled in Japanese using these kanji: 百合 which is specifically the kanji for the lily flower - Yuri Briar in SPYxFAMILY is spelled with the katakana alphabet ユーリ which basically means his name has no Japanese meaning and is someone who is foreign or naturalized. Which fits for the show since it's not set in Japan. Japanese has 2 alphabets (hiragana & katakana), and kanji which is a logographic writing system brought over from China. And yeah, the arson was one of the worst things that have happened to anime in the last decade. So many of the people that worked on my favorite anime series (Sound! Euphonium) were lost in the attack.

A new anime movie is always entertaining this movie is very good I’ve watched it myself it’s a beautiful movie

Only after Taylor writes her letter and sees Amy the blurry image of her sister in her memory finally gets a face.

DreadPirateRob

Letter writing is a lost art I guess. The last letter I wrote was to a lady friend when I was deployed over seas during operation Dessert Storm in 1990. (That might be a bit before your time ;P ) It is amazing what a simple letter will do for morale when your thousands of miles away from family.

Amy Bartlett was an illegitimate child of the York family. There was no legitimate heir, so her father tracked her down and offered to raise her as the legitimate heir to the York family and in exchange they will make sure Taylor is cared for. The York family is a prestigious noble family of Drossel - Princess Charlotte’s homeland. In the novels it is Alberta, Charlotte’s head lady in waiting, that recommends Violet as a tutor for Isabella. In the anime Violet only mentions that the Drossel royal family recommended Violet - this would be technically correct as Alberta belongs to the royal household. “Eternity and the Auto-Memory Doll” is a wonderful bridge between the series and the movie. Stylistically it’s similar to the series while introducing new themes that will be developed further in the movie. And the movie is a full length feature film that is going to hit all of the emotions. KyoAni gave Evan Call a larger orchestra to work with and the soundtrack is all original to the movie. Be sure to watch for a brief end credits scene that caps off The Legend of Violet Evergarden. As mentioned previously “Violet Evergarden: The Movie” was KyoAni’s first production after the arson attack. The victims are memorialized in the credits of the movie. Completing the movie was a deeply important way for the studio to honor the victims.

What happened to KyoAni broke my heart

I think Amy is that York guy's illegitimate daughter because he called her "that woman's child" so he definitely knew the mom. I love how at the end of the movie Taylor kinda becomes Violet's sister as well when she gets adopted by the Evergarden family :)

Schroecat

"Lancaster" and "York" should sound familiar because they're the names of famous British families. Each of them was a cadet house to the Plantagenet Dynasty, and they fought each other for the British crown in the "War of the Roses" for over 30 years.

I enjoyed the film. I thought the relationship between Amy and Taylor was very touching. But I’m not sure I buy the reasoning for them not meeting at the end They were an ambiguous about it, but my understanding was that someone of Amy’s station couldn’t be seen interacting with someone so beneath their stature. Which is total BS Or perhaps it would raise questions about Amy’s own lineage. IDK I guess if Taylor became a postal delivery person, it would give an excuse for her and Amy to interact that wouldn’t draw any unnecessary attention I wish I could get behind the reasoning but the ending felt like a bit of a letdown after all the effort everyone put in to reunite the two sisters

mitchhamilton64

the week after next, the end of the violet evergarden journey. ;-;

Jason

I think Hodgins views Violet more as a daughter than anything else. He also feels a bit of responsibility for her since Gilbert asked him to take care of Violet in case something happened to him. There may be a bit of extra care as well because he knows her history and all she's been through better than most anyone else since they were both in the military.

I originally gave this an 8/10 on MAL years ago, but rewatching it with your reaction made me realize it’s a full 10/10. Turns out I like this movie way more than past-me remembered!

While Taylor was with Violet she couldn't remember what she and Amy did together. Then she got to see her face and the memories came rushing back. The effect that Taylor's letter had on Amy was so sweet! We get to see her in a bright white dress and it is reflected in her happiness. Amy crying out loud, "TAYLOR" with all of her heart and love is when the ball always drops for me. Open the floodgates Now... to finish the story

EgregiousGrievous

I think she was his daughter but a bastard, but as the last soul survivor if his blood, he made her a heir of his fiefdom!
