I don't think Book One could have ended in a more beautiful and moving way than it did..

It managed to feel HUGE and deeply intimate at the same time. There were giant spirits, massive battles, an entire war... but the quiet moments are what really hit me. The choices people made. The weight they carried. The sacrifices.Princess Yue absolutely broke my heart. She wasn't just losing something, she was giving back the life she'd been entrusted with. And she did it without blinking an eye and with so much grace. The image of her becoming part of the moon was beautiful... and devastating.I shed my first tears in Avatar with this finale 🤍And Sokka.. Being strong though all of it made it hurt even more. He's grown so much. They didn't have much time together, but their time was everything looking back now. Sometimes people come into your life exactly when they're meant to, even if they don't stay for long. And Zuko.Every single episode I feel myself getting pulled further into his story. He's still chasing Aang, but it never feels that simple anymore. He has this desperation that's so honest and hard not to sympathize with. His entire identity has become tied to restoring his own honor. I honestly don't think he even knows who he is without that goal. It's so hard not to root for him. To hope that maybe he can eventually find a different path. Not the one given to him by a Father who could care less. And Uncle Iroh. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. He has a moral compass that absolutely refuses to bend. He understands strength better than almost anyone we've met. He knows exactly when not to use it.And Admiral Zhao continues to make my blood absolutely boil. Destroying the Moon Spirit just to win a battle felt like the perfect example of someone so obsessed with victory that they completely lose sight of everything else. The consequences. He was willing to throw the entire world's balance into chaos for his own ambition. He's completely lost the plot and it's terrifying. The war was insane. And I love that Aang tried every peaceful option first. He begged. He reasoned. He searched for any other way. He didn't want to become a weapon even when everyone around him expected him to be one. When he merged with the Ocean Spirit... It didn't feel EPIC and AMAZING. It felt tragic.Nature was grieving. The music, the silence, the towering spirit moving through the water..It didn't feel like a victory lap. It felt like the world crying out..This entire finale was amazing and beautiful in every way.Book One honesty exceeded every expectation I had.I went into Avatar expecting typical silly Nickelodeon vibes. And while it absolutely has that, there is also SO MUCH MORE to unpack here. This is a story about identity, responsibility, forgiveness..The kind of people we become when the world keeps asking us to be someone else.I can't wait to start Book Two with you all next week!I'll be watching 4 episodes a week for the entirety of it ✨See you all there!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/c4pFpR4CDREI watched this on Netflix

Hell Yeah.... Man, I wish Kaliwali could post these EVERYDAY!

Dude Longcouch

Let's go! Can't wait to watch this later. Kali, now that you've seen the end of Book 1, I recommend going back and rewatching the scene in episode 12 "The Storm" when Zuko receives the scar from his father during the Agni Kai... see if you notice anything.

Justyn

Most people will say that the finale of season 1 is the weakest of the 3 finales by default but man oh man i LOVE siege of the north so much. Its probably my 3rd favorite episode in the whole show...wait a minute 🤔🤣

Kase

So excited to watch this later tonight 😄 Just know, it only gets BIGGER and BETTER from here!

BloodyBen

4 episodes a week? I'm so keen!

rubberkidney

Two episodes. My worst fears have been realized. Zero hour is upon us. I'll just have to suckle every tiny bit of React nourishment off of these two episodes possible. Got the Demon Slayer movie. That helps. Ooh, bonus! Four episodes a week now. That's a nice little pick-me-up at the end. Forgiven!

Andre Harry

Book 2, now we finally get to meet one of my favorite characters in the series. Book 1 was a good introduction, but Book 2....

Sky Quest Music Official

Even as a kid, I remember Zhao being one hell of a psychotic villian. Especially at his end when Zuko literally tried to help him and instead of taking it, Zhao preferred to let himself be drowned than to associate with someone he considered a traitor. This whole finale always gave me chills. Now reliving it as an adult watching along side you just makes me appreciate it even more. I'm SOOOOO happy you're loving this show so far!

Andrew Crabtree

Let’s go twinkle toes!!!!!! Hahahahaha can’t wait

mitchhamilton64

not to stop you from doing 4 episodes a week but book two has the same amount of episodes as one. the only one with more episodes is 3 and that has one extra episode. as you know, mark hamill does the voice of firelord ozai and when he was doing this show originally, he said the show wouldnt last because it was too good and too smart. he was right that shows like this dont usually last but im so glad it did. the people that flashed when the chief was giving his speech before starting preperations it flashes 3 people as hes talking about people who will leave the water tribe forever. those people being princess yue, master pakku and hahn. pakku leaving to go help the southern water tribe, hahn immediately got thrown overboard by zhao, and princess yue of course, her fate. the sort of theme song for sokka and yue is the same song iroh was singing on the ship in the previous episode. "Winter spring summer and fall. winter spring summer and fall. four seasons, for love. four seasons for love."

FrenchTantan

I love how the Water Tribe is saved here. 'Cause you said they bowed to Aang, but it's not really him, per se. You can see when he steps in the oasis, the eyes of the other koi fish start to glow as well. That's the spirit of the ocean giving up its mortal form, and temporarily merging with Aang's Avatar spirit to create this huge monster. The waterbenders mainly bowed to La, their guardian spirit. The scary thing is, in that moment, we see a very powerful, ancient spirit in a state of unbelievable anger and rage. This is an immortal who just lost its other half, and is taking it out on the ones responsible first, but where would it stop? Here, it only did when the moon came back, but what if it didn't? II think what we saw here was a glimpse into a world completely out of balance. The Ocean spirit, bringer of life, turned into a dealer of death for the Fire Navy. It's also interesting pondering as to why Aang entered the Avatar state here. We know it's triggered when he's in danger (like when he froze himself), or when his emotions go into overdrive (like when he saw Gyatso's corpse). But here, my headcanon is that La's rage was so strong that Aang, being spiritually inclined, felt it as if it were his own. Don't get me wrong, Aang must've been angry too seeing the moon spirit die, but the fact that he immediately walked towards La makes me thing that's where the bulk of the emotion triggering the Avatar state came from. Edit: Okay, I just read your written summary and just realized I basically paraphrased what you said. "Nature grieving" is a way better phrasing aha!

Binho

Everybody is gangsta, until nucle Iroh raises his voice.

Andrew Kerr

One of my all time favourite season finale's. And a brilliant reaction to go with it. Love your analysis on it all as always! Just a recommendation when going into season 2; you might want the skip the "previously on Avatar" reminders at the start. They can, on occasion going forwards, spoil the episodes a bit. They'll do a bit where it's "previously on Avatar, remember this character from 4 episodes ago" and then the episode will be "who is this mysterious person doing things. It can't possibly be the person we just reminded you about at the start". It doesn't happen in every episode, and it's not the end of the world when it happens, but it can still be annoying when it happens so just thought I'd put that out there.

Binho

That is prove of how good the writing, and the show in general is. It naturally progress to be better and better. We get more and more invested. It only makes sense that each season finale becomes better than the previous one.

Jahny Bravo

I absolutely love the way you write about the episodes after watching them. It’s always a beautiful summary of exactly what makes these episodes and character’s great, and puts things in an eloquent way I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else match when talking about the show. I think that’s why I (embarrassingly) can’t help myself from writing so many paragraphs in the comments of each of your reactions (I truly try my best to be concise but always overdo it 😭). Because I genuinely just enjoy hearing/reading what you think about all the many aspects of the shows/movies you react to One detail I always loved after having pointed out to me was that in the Avatar spirit at the end, Aang and the Ocean spirit can only create waves (aka push the water) to attack the Fire Navy/Soldiers because the moon spirit that pulls on the tides is dead. So Aang can only waterbend in one direction because he’s joined with the ocean spirit itself. It really highlights how waterbending truly is built on the harmony of the two, push AND pull, and one without the other ruins the balance. I’ve even seen people mention that if you rewatch the fight between Katara and Pakku in ep 17, you can tell the difference in her being an amateur and him being a master in the way his waterbending seamlessly weaves between pushing and pulling the water. Taking the water Katara uses to attack him, pulling it around him, and then pushing it back at her. Meanwhile she only ever pushes. Either hurling water at him, or pushing the water he attacks her with away from herself. She never uses push and pulling in tandem until AFTER she trains with him in these episodes. What’s great about this show is that the more you learn about each bending style (alongside the characters themselves) the more you realize that the bendings themselves are fully written to function on genuine martial art principles, eastern philosophy, and even actual physical body mechanics. A few years ago I started getting bad back problems from work and decided to start doing yoga to stretch more. A couple months into it I had one of my yearly itches to rewatch the show in the background so I put it on. I had already seen the show a dozen times by then, but watching it in the midst of trying to stretch, exercise, and be more active made me realize that 75% of the things they say when a character is learning/practicing bending could be applied to my own yoga and exercise to make it more effective and more BALANCED. Admittedly I only lasted like 2 years before I fell out of the habit, but I really should get back on that cause it was the healthiest I ever felt in like over a decade now. As for Uncle Iroh being called a traitor now for trying to protect the Moon Spirit (even tho he insisted the Fire Nation also depended on the Moon), consider that Zuko was cast out to hunt the Avatar SEVERAL years ago. While Aang was still in the iceberg and no one had seen signs of the Avatar in 100 years. Once the Avatar actually does show up for real, the Firelord promotes ZHAO to Admiral and makes giving ZHAO the resources to hunt down the Avatar TOP priority. All while knowing Iroh and Zuko are already out there doing the exact same mission for far longer. Zhao’s ruthless mindset is what the Firelord likes and supports. Neither of them genuinely care about the wellbeing of the Fire Nation, just the chance to destroy everyone else AS the Fire Nation. Zhao constantly gets promoted for the exact reasons that drove Jeong Jeong to internalize resentment toward his OWN firebending. He deserted the Fire army because everything he hates about firebending is everything the Firelord and his own pupil valued in it. I mean Zuko’s entire punishment came about from his arguing in the War meeting that sacrificing their own soldiers as bait was wrong (although admittedly that was just the reason for the Agni Kai, with the Agni Kai being the reason for the actual banishment). If his son caring about other soldiers is seen as weakness to him, his brother caring about the Moon spirit definitely ain’t gonna fly. P.s. now that you’ve seen the Firelord talking to Zuko’s sister in the end, if you go back to the episode (I think it was 12) “The Storm” you can see his sister in that episode, too. During the Agni Kai flashback where the Firelord scars Zuko, Iroh mentions to the crew that he couldn’t bear to look. And when they show Iroh avert his eyes in the flashback, you can see Zuko’s sister sitting next to Iroh SMILING at seeing her brother get burned by their father. Not only is she in that moment, but you also see her in the intro to every. single. episode. When they go “Water, Earth, Fire, Air” and show one person at a time demonstrating each element, she’s the one that appears to demonstrate Fire. So you’ve been seeing her since episode one without even realizing it, but “The Storm” is the first time she’s shown within the show itself. With no attention drawn to her other than the fact she’s the only child in the crowd, yet sitting directly next to Iroh. It’s one of those things that just makes one go “wow, how many details did they truly plan in advance?” when a character we don’t even find out exists until the season finale has been hidden in plain sight since the very first episode.

GormlessKong

These episodes are so important and relevant in the world we're in

just conor

4 episodes a week? absolutely amazing, thank you Kali!

Onno Smits

Yeah, I got watery eyed again as well rewatching this with you. Gosh, the music for this show just elevates it so much. I'm glad you're moving onto Book 2 without delay and upping the cadence, that's such great news! 😊

Josue

The series only gets better from here. Excited for Book 2 reactions! Have you given any thought to the recently released movie? Think you'd watch it after finishing the series? Just curious.

Daniel Morgan

Tysm Kali for this amazing Avatar journey. 😭 I finally caught with this show and One Piece about 2 weeks ago, and I've yet to actually finish Demon Slayer tbh, but I like season 4's beginning so far. 🥹

People need to learn that most good shows need stuff to build off of and the start is where people start . There is a reason why Season 2 and beyond get so much better because they had solid foundation to build off of .

4 episodes a week? Hell yeah!!!

Extremely well said-ˋˏ ༻❁𝓚𝓪𝓵𝓲𝔀𝓪𝓵𝓲❀༺ ˎˊ- , The whole mentality that this is a "kids" show really needs to go away for any media is written by people who were once kids and now are adults. Truly, what is a child, simply a living person who continually learns and grows for all their lives! This is why understanding children will need guidance in all things from the beginning of their lives, allowing them to thrive and more importantly survive. Leaving children in the dark is akin to taking away the moonlight in their lives, leaving them stumbling and injuring themselves in an eternal night. Ultimately, give your children the ̰𝓑̰𝓵̰𝓮̰𝓼̰𝓼̰𝓲̰𝓷̰𝓰̰ ̰𝓸̰𝓯̰ ̰𝓚̰𝓷̰𝓸̰𝔀̰𝓵̰𝓮̰𝓭̰𝓰̰𝓮̰ from the moment they are born, otherwise, your condemning your children with the ̰𝓒̰𝓾̰𝓻̰𝓼̰𝓮̰ ̰𝓸̰𝓯̰ ̰𝓘̰𝓰̰𝓷̰𝓸̰𝓻̰𝓪̰𝓷̰𝓬̰𝓮̰. Uncle Iroh is an inherently kindhearted person who has been through much that has provided him a sagacious mind and spirit. Zuko has yet to understand just how fortuitous of a guide Uncle Iroh truly is since he is too busy fighting off the demons and avoiding the pitfalls his biological father placed as obstacles in his metaphorical and literal path in his own sons life pilgrimage. I left an earlier comment about how part 2 is my 3rd favorite episode in the show, but every tim i rewatch it i feel like its my number 1. I literally love everything about the entire episode. Zukos little monologue in the cave, katara showing how much she really has mastered her element, Paku showing everything hes got as a master, yues lore, the color/black&wite stuff toward the end, aang and the most epic avatar shit literally fusing with the ocean itself, the music, every single line read, Koh the face stealer is just the creepiest and coolest thing The whole episode is just so cool i truly think its a perfect 10/10

UTU49

Well, I enjoyed reading your comment, so I don't think you need to try to write less. I always say to reactors (and everyone else) that I'm generally interested in hearing people talk about things that genuinely interest them. If they're talking at length about something that they are passionate about, I'm happy to follow along. If they are talking, just to talk, THAT'S when I'm likely to lose interest. Also... I totally agree with you about Kali's write ups for each video. I'll watch for your comments next season.

UTU49

I love Season 1, but ATLA builds on itself like few pieces of media I've ever seen. So, naturally, Season 2 is even better than Season 1, and Season 3 is even better than Season 2.

UTU49

UTU49

There's a similar dynamic when it comes to my favorite characters. Of the 5 main characters in Season 1, Sokka and Zuko are my least favorite, but that's really not very meaningful when you consider that I absolutely LOVE Sokka and Zuko. I just happen to love Iroh, Aang, and Katara even more.

UTU49

Hey Kali. I am really, really enjoying following your journey through one of my favorite shows. If you feel like it, would you like to talk about how you feel about each of the main characters in Season 1? Rank them, if that's something that would be meaningful to you. It's pretty obvious that you are connecting strongly with all 5 of our main characters from Season 1, but I just like to squeeze more thoughts out of my favorite reactors. [/tongue in cheek].

Kaliwali, Please watch and react an anime called Eighty-Six (86) . It is on par with Frieren and Violet Evergarden, when it comes story telling, music, characters, romance, action, animation and production. I hope ppl will recommend this too.

Thane Kyrell

I cannot wait for you to see how tough is in s2

UTU49

When one of my favorite reactors decides to post 4 episodes of Avatar per week: that's the kind of good news that makes me feel a little bit dizzy.

David Hansen

So a couple fun facts you may have missed. We actually see prince zukos sister briefly before in the storm episode for a brief second when we see prince zuko getting burned by his father. It pans to iroh looking away and zhoa and his sister smiling watching him get burned. Also when Aang is merged with the ocean spirit they are only pushing the water not pulling because the moon is pull while ocean is push.

SEAN ƴü KAY

Don't forget about 'Legend of Korra' after season 3. A lot to look forward to.

kaliwali

I loved your summary too tho!! Ty for sharing and watching with me!

kaliwali

UTU said it perfectly! I'm glad I can give you some extra passion to write it all out. As you can tell, I really enjoy writing out my thoughts after I've had a moment to sit with what I've watched for a bit. Sometimes emotions come so quickly but the real message takes a minute to really sit with and I found that after I've watched something, then sit to edit it for Patreon, I get so many more thought and things that click into place for me! So I started doing these post-watch blogs and I really enjoy doing them. It always makes me happy to know they get read by other passionate people out there, so thank you! And thank you for writing your own thoughts!! I seriously enjoyed reading them 🤍

kaliwali

LOL we'll see! I feel like ever since someone got me to do my Top 5 which turned into a Top 8 then a Top 10 for MCU then Endgame happened... I've been a bit traumatized by keeping favorites and a score on characters bahahaha.

kaliwali

I always enjoy reading your post watch thoughts!! Thank you for sharing!

kaliwali

I didn't even know there was a recent movie release! I suppose I'll check it out then!

kaliwali

Ty for the recommend! I've received this one before so it's on my list 👀

kaliwali

OMG that's crazy about the push/pull. Ty for that!

Padraig_V

There is a theory that Princess Yue was supposed to be the next Avatar after Aang, if he had not been frozen. Since Aang was still alive, Yue couldn't be incorporated into the avatar cycle and that's why she almost died at birth. But then the Moon Spirit intervened as we know.

Dude Longcouch

So I was trying to leave a little bit of mystery to this, but I can see that a bunch of other people have already told you exactly what I was talking about, so yeah :p

Josue

Awesome. You should avoid looking it up until you've finished the series to be safe.

Ghgh

Zukos sister aka the goat

Retna

Hell yeah 4 episodes a week lets go!

UTU49

LOL. By Endgame, the MCU has about 40 characters. At least with Avatar, there will never be anywhere near that many characters. Promise. lol.

UTU49

Maybe just talk about the characters YOUR way. I don't like ranking things either, so I'll just say things like the following. "Katara, Aang, and Iroh are my favorite characters, but I really like Sokka and Zuko too."

Null_Returns

Finally I can see you are getting right with Uncle. That's why he is still a fan fav character still.
