I genuinely don't know where to begin saying goodbye to Violet Evergarden.

This movie felt like closing the hard cover on a book that I've been carrying around with me for awhile now. The pages all crinkly from the tears I've cried on almost every page 😭 I honestly loved this finale. It left me feeling happy, fulfilled and honestly a bit heavy. This has been such a beautiful, painful, incredibly human journey.Violet grew so much since the beginning of this series. Letter by letter, person by person, she learned how to live. She learned "I love you" through other's love. She learned grief through other's grief. She knew what it meant to miss someone, to regret something, to desperately wish you could say the words you never got a chance to say.But... GILBERT WAS ALIVE!? I had completely given up hope, guys. This entire time. Whenever Violet insisted that he was still alive, it honestly just hurt my heart. I thought she was only lying to herself. Learning to cope through ignorance. I thought accepting his death was going to be the final step in her healing. I thought she'd move onto another love..But she wasn't in denial. She just never gave up hope. And honestly, that feels like genius writing because I understand her?If someone I loved disappeared, I'd never give up hope too.If there was even the smallest possibility.. I don't think I'd ever give up.I was so MAD at Gilbert at first for knowing she was alive and still choosing not to return. But the more he talked and explained, the more I understood him as well..Gilbert was burning too.Violet spent this entire series learning how to live with those burns. She found people who loved her, she had friendships, a purpose at the Postal Service HQ, and all those experiences slowly taught her how to carry her grief and guilt. Gilbert didn't have that. He isolated himself and let his guilt consume him. It was his way of coping. And that's really what this series has taught me since the very beginning.. Grief isn't linear. It doesn't look the same for everyone. There isn't one "correct" way to heal. We all end up different on the other side of it.Guys, I'm genuinely going to miss this beautiful, devastating little series. It broke my heart in half, had me sobbing, gave me tension headaches LOLBut I love it for exactly that.Thank you guys for hanging out with me through this entire emotional journey. Experiencing Violet's story for the first time with all of you made it even more special, so THANK YOU for crying with me!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿WANT TO WATCH IN DUB? When the movie came out their was a section of fans that were upset that Gilbert was actually alive because to them it felt like it cheapened violets growth and acceptance of his “death” in the story but I fully disagree because Gilbert being alive doesn’t change how much she grew throughout the story, if anything she deserves a happy ending for everything she’s been through throughout her life which is why I found the ending to be one of the most satisfying endings a story could possibly have. I’m glad you enjoyed it and can’t wait for cyberpunk next week!

Yeah, I had mentioned that divide in the fanbase before. I for one despise this ending with a passion. Which is quite interesting to have a such a divide. I think it does cheapen her growth and her mourning. To go and create a new life for herself only to end up back where she began. Then also vindicating her denial sounds unhealthy to me. As well as having Gilbert being rather terrible to everyone. Then subjectively I felt it didn't fit the themes of the story, that Violet was the only one out of the whole story that got to have her love return while everyone else didn't. It was about her sharing that suffering, how everyone was burning. I felt it was way more satisfying having her be able to learn how to live with such a loss alongside everyone else who had suffered.

I think the anger at the Gilbert ending was less about absolving all the growth Violet did, and more that he groomed his 10 year old, emotionally stunted, naive adopted daughter. I loved Violet Evergarden. Every second of the season (except ep 5… go figure), while I thought the love was parental, a caregiver, platonic. I consider eps 7-10 one of the greatest anime runs ever. Until the last half of the movie. Then it becomes a story I hate that I enjoyed, and cannot recommend to anyone. “I’ve always wanted this”. There’s no explanation that absolves this story of pedophile parental grooming. He was 25, she was 10. At “I love you” he was 29, she 14. The argument is that she was of-age when she makes her own decision to be with him. But it wasn’t her decision. And it wasn’t made in her older years, it was made when he told her he loved her. It was a seed planted by someone who should have known better than to get romantically involved with a child.

The anime took a lot of creative liberties that the Violet Evergarden light novel didn't have. This movie, in particular, showing that Gilbert was alive all this time was purely something the anime portrayed. There were other differences between the light novel and the anime adaptation, some small, some large. My understanding of what the fans you mentioned about Violet's growth in accepting Gilbert's death has to do with how trauma heals in the first place. It's very much like an open wound closing. Showing that Gilbert was alive reopened Violet's wounds, launching her back into the past that her continued efforts in being an Auto Memory Doll would have diverted her attention from. Her work in her profession began as a way for her to understand what she couldn't in her personal history. It evolved into a way for her to have a future and to give other people who were her clients a future without being dragged down by an emotional burden. Trauma doesn't heal in the sense that anything is "cured". Rather, it's put into a state of dormancy where without feeding the addiction to be always sad, or always angry one has applied self-control to their current behaviors. Glibert being alive quite literally made Violet's pain rise out of dormancy to need to start all over on what to do with it.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to have access to this lol I only have the TV show membership I haven't seen the series yet so watching this would be a spoiler, just found it curious I could press play on it Maybe down the line I shall experience this full reaction! Till then I hope everyone else enjoys it!

And then there's also the fact that if Violet Evergarden were shown in some sequel having a relationship with Gilbert, I would bet anything that it'd be a very turbulent one. Their bond is essentially one born out of trauma. Those relationships tend to be as conflicting as they can be passionate.

Mitchell Hastings

… in the LN he kept his survival a secret until the end of V2, then they date and marry? What do you mean him being alive is anime only? Or do you just mean that the novels made it more obvious that he survived instead of keeping it secret?

HadSkills

Yeah, this ending didn’t do it for me, it’s really the only thing I didn’t like about the series. To me I love all of it till this movie. Just my opinion though, it’s a fantastic series and loved all the reactions ❤️

The stain on the Violet Evergarden legacy. People are upset that Gilbert absolved Violet of her growth. I’m upset that he groomed his 10 year old, emotionally stunted, naive adopted daughter. I loved Violet Evergarden. Every second of the season (except ep 5… go figure), while I thought the love was parental, a caregiver, platonic. I consider eps 7-10 one of the greatest anime runs ever. The argument is that she was of-age when she makes her own decision to be with him. But it wasn’t her decision. And it wasn’t made in her older years, it was made when he became her only source of safety, and furthermore when told her he loved her. It was a seed planted by someone who should have known better than to get romantically involved with a child.

Mb. I was misinformed about the Light Novel don't showing Gilbert and Violet's reunion. In fact, it shows it much earlier. Their involvement is also far more romantic than in the anime.

kaliwali

Yeah! Usually for movies that are attached to an anime series I've been just sticking in the show category since it's an extension of it! ✨

kaliwali

Totally understandable opinion..

I’m so glad you watched the entirety of violet evergarden, it’s definitely been great seeing your reaction to this show. Fun fact but the light novel is actually completely different to the anime, so different to the point that they might aswell be two completely different shows lol. Traits about light novel Violet that aren't part of the anime: 1) She's older The anime cut out a massive timeskip that was in the LNs. In the anime, Violet spends 4 months (120 days) in the hospital after the war and starts working for CH Postal almost immediately after she is discharged. In the LN, Violet lives with the Evergarden family for over a year and a half, close to two years, after she is discharged. This is because Hodgins still needs time to set up the business, and Violet herself also needs time to acclimate to her artificial arms and complete her physical and mental recovery, in addition to learning etiquette and proper social mannerisms from the Evergardens (ever wonder why Violet was so effective at her job in Isabella York's school? This is why). Even with the anime doing timeskips for its movies, Violet is only 18 at the end of the final movie, but she is 20 (or very close to it) by the end of the light novels. 2) Because she is older, she is less naive She can pick up on social cues more easily than anime Violet did. One major example is during the tutoring job for Isabella York. In the LN, Isabella legit asks Violet for a kiss during their dance training. Violet, without missing a beat, immediately says no, and instantly defuses the sexual tension in the air between them. When Isabella asks Violet to take a bath with her, Violet agrees but very firmly warns Isabella that if she touches her inappropriately, the job will be ended, Violet will return to CH Postal and file a complaint, and they will bill Isabella for breach of contract. None of this was present in the anime. 3) She's not a pacifist The LN Violet doesn't have a problem with committing violence if necessary. The biggest difference between LN & anime Violet is that LN Violet has absolutely zero regrets about anything she did during the war. Heck the only reason she refrains from killing people is because Hodgins asked her not to before he hired her to work at CH Postal. There is a scene in a chapter that wasn't adapted in the anime where her client knows about her military history and outright calls her a monster, and she just nods and agrees with him without any other reaction. This all leads up to a huge difference in how she acts during the train hijacking: these two episodes in the anime got plenty of criticism from viewers who were groaning at how hard she was trying to spare the terrorists. Well guess what, LN Violet isn't like this at all, in fact she's going full-on Agent 47/Sam Fisher on the terrorists, stalking them from the shadows and ambushing them one by one. There is one notable instance where she grabs a terrorist's gun, shoots him in the knees, and throws him off the train while it's going at 100 mph, and later tells the terrorist leader that "he's probably still alive, I wasn't trying to kill him" lol. 4) Many men have tried to R*** her This ties into the above, one major reason why LN Violet doesn't regret all the killing she has done in the war is because a disgustingly large number of the men she killed were soldiers from her own army who constantly tried to sneak into her tent and assault her. This is a huge reason why she is so attached to the Major, because he provided a safe haven for her and never attempted to touch her inappropriately and even stood guard over her as she slept. 5) She is not as strong emotionally One of the most interesting differences is that the anime Violet become an emotionally stronger person much faster than the LN Violet. In the LN, Violet is still struggling with feelings of being a living weapon who needs orders even as late as the final volume, and she even confides in a female friend that she feels like she lacks confidence and is a failure as a woman. This is a huge contrast to anime Violet, who already confidently declared to Dietfried in the TV show's last episode that "I don't need orders anymore." That's all I can think of right now, I need to reread the novels again frankly. Maybe someone else can chime in with other details.

may the talented people at kyoto animation who worked on this movie and whos lives were cut short in that arson attack know that their work was beautiful and may they rest in peace. and so we reach the end of a journey. i love how it focuses on the grand child of anne, the arc that was so devastating and probably made people cry the most. as sad as that one was, i love that it carried on with that one with the letters and granddaughter. i think with violet being more emotionless in this is because she was going through a depressive phase. like shes brought happiness to others and closure and such but to her, theres still this emptiness where she cant bring herself happiness. she cant be with the one person she loves no matter how much happiness she brings others. god, when scion, yuris's brother went up to his brother after hearing that letter, not fully understanding that yuris was gone, that really wrecked me. i loved how violet was remembered. its such a satisfying way to the end of her journey, we know that even though shes gone she will be remembered and carried on to the future in some way for her amazing accomplishments. and god, that ending where the seconds were ticking and she was stepping to that? just beautiful, like shes a small part of time and she doesnt fight it, she just goes along with it. just a wonderful way to end the series. cant wait for your cosplay! 😁 its gonna look great.

jtet

such an amazing series, I’m so glad you started watching anime😭

What I expected watching through this series and the movies was to see Violet's personal development and emotional maturity What I didn't expect was seeing just how much of an influence she had on everyone in her time and the future. I think that was the most beautiful part of all of this for me

Waiting4Erik

Great reactions to this beautiful series! I always find the criticisms of the movie from its own fan base as weird. Violets represent faithfulness and everlasting love. That is the essence of Violet Evergarden. That is who she is. Before she had the words and concepts to express love she expressed it by following orders - because that was the only way she knew how to express faithfulness and devotion. Her “growth” stems from these roots. While she accepted that Gilbert was not with her, she never accepted that he had died. She states that explicitly in her letter to end the TV series. She will remain faithful; she will not stop loving. The movie very bluntly reminds us that people don’t simply move on from trauma and grief. All it takes is an inopportune phrase or image to trigger a flashback. Hodgins’ comments remind Violet of her grief and it eventually leads to her flashback. Grief and trauma are like that. It doesn’t go away. People don’t get to choose this. People don’t get over this - they learn to live with it. Yuris and Lucas’ friendship mirrors Gilbert and Violet’s relationship. Both Yuris and Gilbert isolated themselves because of the pain they felt. Lucas the ever faithful friend like Violet does not want an apology. He just wants Yuris to know that he still loves him; they are still friends. It is exactly the same for Violet with Gilbert. The word “Sincerely” at the beginning of the movie is a reference to the OP of the TV series “Sincerely” by TRUE. And so ends the Legend of Violet Evergarden with Violet’s footsteps resembling the ticking of a clock - echoing through eternity. A final reminder that Violet will travel anywhere to meet us across time and space.

Watched this movie for the first time along with you! I was fine with the ending and thought it wrapped Violet's and the major's relationship and story well. I was so pissed at the major as well. After he read the letter, I was like, "run you idiot the boat is leaving!" Thankfully he did! By the way, if you rewatch the very first episode of the series, a wind carries off Violet's letter as well! So when this movie started and ended with the same thing, it was very appropriate! Looking forward to your cosplay and the Apothecary Diaries!

I'm a bit unnerved that there is so much hate in these comments about this ending. People can preach about pedophilia and grooming all they want until the cows come home, but no one ever bats an eye at our own history. We as a society have come very far since the days where we were grooming and marrying off 10-12 year olds, but if we sit here and decry every piece of art that depicts that time in history, whether fictional or historical, we are going to sanitize every reason that art exists in the first place. Kali, I'm glad you enjoyed this series. I look forward to the cosplay. Despite the ending, I personally feel like Violet's growth was not destroyed in the slightest. Personally, when I saw Violet being a bit emotionless at the start, it made me see my own grief for my parents' deaths. I went through times of healing, and times of backsliding into hurt. I feel that we simply fell into one of those times for Violet. It is very easy to grow weary when holding onto hope, and it is emotionally exhausting. As far as Cyberpunk vs Your Lie in April... they are a horse a piece for how much they destroyed me emotionally. I don't want to spoil anything for either of them, so that is all I have to say. They are two other of my top 25 anime of all time, and Violet stands above them. Granted, I like to be emotionally destroyed, so all of these anime track. Best of luck with the rest of the series that you are working through!

i have to leave another comment after seeing the backlash this movie has gotten and theyre just wild. first off, the idea that violet's journey is undermined by gilbert being alive. this is a take that is rarely a good one because it doesnt magically undo every single thing violet has done, she still did those amazing things and we see in the future, at least to the point where daisy gets that clipping of violet that her feats were carried into the future and left an impact. so no, it doesnt undo all that its done and while i can see the argument of cheapening her journey that she learned to grow without gilbert, its also her ultimate reward. she had her journey and violet being who she is didnt want anything but for gilbert to come back, and her efforts rewarded her with her wish. second, the grooming which is absolutely insane to me. gilbert didnt want violet to be around him to begin with since his activities involved being on the battlefield, but when he was away she became violent and very anti-social. he didnt orchestrate that, it naturally happened as he was the only one that cared about her. on top of that he thought he was going to die, he lost his arm, eye, he had been shot, bombs were dropping, he told her to live her own life. AND on top of that, he didnt come back! he was totally fine with letting her live her own life without her ever knowing that he was alive. he was going to be fine with her leaving forever too until he read her letter. that would be insane grooming with cosmic power level of foresight if that was his plan. i swear, people make it sound like he orchestrated saving her from his brother, sending her to battle after battle which we know is not the case, getting shot, losing an arm, almost dying, bombs dropping, getting buried in rubble, losing his tags, going to a random hospital, going to a random island, not seeing her for years, having a young child ask him to write a letter for them, etc etc. just wild.

kaliwali

I was so close to deleting my reaction to this bc of some of the comments. I never saw it that way & yeah... thanks for leaving this comment to remind me it wasn't meant to be taken that way

I enjoyed the time watching Violet Evergarden with you. Hope you get to see "Attack on titan" soon. :)

This show 😭 While I liked the ending, it wasn’t what I was expecting. I actually had no idea how they were going to end the series, but the Major being alive wasn’t on my bingo card I guess it was a bit of fan service (I’m not mad at it), but the show was never really about them being together for me. It was more about Violet’s emotional growth and journey The Major wasn’t somewhere she was heading towards, but instead, his death was the catalyst that sent her on her journey. He was always the start line, not the finish line I did like how they showed Violet’s legacy. And how she, and her letters, are still remembered generations later And I guess that’s her true legacy. To tell the people around you how you feel, while you can. Tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone And it’s not just for the other person’s benefit. Saying what you need to say can help you heal, and move on. So you can move forward and not be stuck in a moment of anger, regret, or grief I think that’s what will stay with me the most Great show. I enjoyed experiencing along with you Kali

And just like that, this marathon is over. If I was smart enough I would have subscribed to you before this began. Then the pain would have been drawn out even longer. I guess the quick pull of the band aid was better. Not really. At least I'll get to start new stories with you from here on out. Take care
