Okay.. Honestly, this one quickly shot up to my FAVORITE Ghibli movie so far ✨

The MUSIC, the details, the animation, the vibe.. It completely swept me away.I was transported into a dream that made more emotional sense the longer I stayed inside of it.And I LOVED Sophie and Howl.Their love story was this huge, obvious romance constantly announcing itself in beautiful ways. And now realizing back to the very beginning of the story, Howl does tell Sophie "There you are. I was looking everywhere for you." which connects to the time loop where Sophie travels to the past to tell young Howl to find her in the future 😱 Something I honestly didn't put together until I watched this one a SECOND time already later that night lol. I just had to.. I put it on in the background while I was getting some admin/editing work done for YouTube and that realization hit me like a wave. But I think my favorite part of this was Sophie's transformation. At first, I kept trying to understand the rules of the curse. Why was she sometimes suddenly younger? Was it only when she is asleep? Why is she getting old again? Then it started to click. The curse wasn't only something the Witch of the Waste had done to Sophie. It was more like the physical form that Sophie already believed herself to be. I LOVE THAT.Her appearance ties to how she sees herself. When she's afraid or insecure, the years creep back onto her. But when she's passionate, confident, or completely consumed by love.. we see Sophie underneath it all. It makes her curse feel painfully human. Like maybe I have one of those too..How many of us become smaller versions of ourselves simply because we've decided that's all we're allowed to be? THAT message is what shot this one up to my favorite Ghibli experience so far.And then there's Howl. So incredibly charming. Almost a complete opposite of Sophie. He has this enormous magical identity around him. He's beautiful, powerful, mysterious, and honestly dramatic as hell LOL. This man literally melted down because his hair wasn't the perfect shade. The more I learned about him, the more I realized Howl isn't this fearless wizard. He's running too. From responsibilities. From the war. From people who only want to use him and his power and his love. From the pieces of himself he's given away. And Sophie becomes this little anchor inside all of that chaos. She witnesses Howl's heart being lost during his childhood. That moment felt so strange and beautiful and sad. I went into this one expecting another beautiful Ghibli movie and walked away remembering that I am worthy. Worthy of being loved. Worthy of living my own life. Worthy of finding love in someone who helps me remember who I am when the world changed me into something else.So I loved this one.. It was weird. Beautiful. Funny. Romantic. Occasionally very confusing lol.But maybe that's why I loved it so much?I can't wait for Spirited Away in a few weeks!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/OHR0XiGqke8I watched this on HBO Max

Studio Ghibli movies are so magical. Thank you for reacting to them.

Robert da Spruce

Never seen this one. Sounds like you really enjoyed it. Looking forward to checking it out!

Never seen this 🤔 LETS CHECK IT OUT FAM! 🙌

Man...this is gonna be a ride. I haven't seen this movie since 2005 when I went to Otakon and saw a screening there with a girl that I was involved with. Very chaotic time, always dredges up memories... some good, some bad. Time to take a walk down memory lane.

Yeah, Disney handles all the voice work conversion for Ghibli movies, so they get people like Billy Crystal and Tony Todd. I don't know if Tony Todd is a huge star, but they get big names who have interesting voices and they know how to cast for voice acting—unlike a lot of anime, where they just find some dude in a room. Just like here in America, when we speak, write scripts, say something, or communicate with words, we have a particular cadence and style of speaking. The same is true in any other language. When a show is written in Japanese, and all the sentiments are much more commonly tuned to the Japanese language, the actions and reactions of the characters are more Japanese. It feels better to hear them say things in Japanese. Just like a script written by Americans sounds better and more natural when it's read by Americans, a lot of Japanese sentiment and phrasing does not sound very good in English. It tends to sound corny, but in Japanese, it can be full of emotion; and convey the feeling that is transmitted by the speakers, while not necessarily being totally understood. So now we have both the side of the language—its phonetics and its interactions with the culture and people that speak it—and there is also a talent and actor-level difference. In this movie, the actors did an amazing job with the characters they're portraying. It also, of course, helps that it's not deeply based and steeped in Japanese culture.

all time classic!

One of the best Ghibli films I'm excited to rewatch it. You should definitely watch princess mononoke at some point its the best Ghibli film in my opinion.

Usagi

A nice surprise✨

Usagi

I can not wait for your Spirited Away reactions I could tear up lol Also, Spirited Away is one of the few anime I equally love the sub and dub versions! Might even prefer dub sometimes. They did a great performance in English.

Richard

Love those insightful takeaways. Thus, I still think you would have made a great therapist haha; but it would have drained you.

kaliwali

lmk how you liked it! I thought it was beautiful and so much deeper meaning to think about

kaliwali

oo haven't heard of that one yet! i'll add it on my list to check out, thank you!

kaliwali

oo now i'm very excited for Spirited Away!

I have only ever made 1 movie recommendation to you and it was about a year ago. I cant remember what reaction triggered it, but it was a love story and maybe anime. The way you reacted to that film made me think that this one would hit you in the feels. This may be my favorite film... or at least in my top 5. This and La La Land are my 2 favorite love stories. Thank you sor sharing your reactions to this one. It's a particularly special film to me... :)

Howl's Moving Castle is adapted from the 1986 fantasy novel by Diana Wynne Jones—well worth a spot on the bookshelf

Howie

YES!! I knew you'd love the music! The genius of the "John Williams" of Japan: Joe Hisaishi! Not gonna lie, but I didn't really like Howl's Moving Castle when I first saw it. It was probably because I've seen nearly all of Miyazaki's previous movies before it, and it didn't measure up to the others initially. But it's grown on me more and more after each rewatch, so that's a testament of it's greatness. As for how awesome the movie looks, you have to remember it came out in 2004. Kiki's Delivery Service is much older and was released in 1989. Fun fact, this movie is loosely based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones. I heard it's very different from the book! Btw, there are YT videos of people recreating anime food into real recipes and dishes! This is my first time watching the dub and HAHA I heard Christian Bale Batman too! Anyways, so glad you loved it! Looking forward to more Ghibli movies! You may have to do a My Neighbor Totoro reaction even though you've "seen" it before. As for sub or dub, like you I want to honor the original voice actors and almost always prefer it. But sometimes the dub is equal to the task. The purists will always say nay, but I'd rather have someone watch the dub and enjoy the movie than to not watch it all because subtitles are the barrier.

TChang23

Love your comments on sub vs dub at the start, Japanese voice actors genuinely elevate the stories they are acting out, they genuinely make you feel the emotions that trying to be conveyed. In any case, the dub for this is incredible and I’m glad you were able to experience it! Ghibli movies are always so beautiful when it comes to the art and stories they tell, I always look forward to these.

mitchhamilton64

idk if swayed to look at the english cast because of my comment but i will take full credit for it 😁yeah, christian bale apparently asked specifically to be in a ghibli film since he loved their previous works and whats interesting is i heard a story of him doing a signing and as you would expect, most people were bringing their batman stuff for him to sign and someone brought a copy of howls moving castle and he lit up from it. i was wondering if you heard some of the OST before because this one especially has a great OST that is used a lot. suliman didnt curse howl. he caught a falling star and seemingly made a deal with him before swallowing it and giving it his heart, hence how calcifer was born. like it said earlier "you who swallowed a falling star." kik's delivery service is good but this i think is really great. i cannot wait for spirited away!

2026-09-07 13:00 I made the mistake of reading the book about 2 months before watching the film so I kept comparing them to each other. I'll do a p.s. to let you know how I enjoy it with you.

P.S. it has been so long since I read the book that I do not remember what my problems were. I was able to enjoy the movie and look for the story the movie was trying to tell. I love how much stories touch you, how the characters draw out hope, love, suspicion and joy. Thank you.

This one was my Studio Ghibli gateway drug. Never read the book but I always loved the imagery of this big walking building. By the end I was ready to try just about anything this studio has made.

JULLIEN Nicolas

It's my favorite too! My second favorite is "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind". Though not technicaly a Ghibli movie as it was released before Ghibli was founded. It is the success of Nausicaä that made the founding of Ghibli possible.

JULLIEN Nicolas

I am so happy you are continuing your journey through Miyazaki's works. I hope you'll see "Princess Mononoke" and "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", their original soundtracks are just so memorable (again by the genius that is Joe Hisaishi).

Please add Castle in the Sky to your watch list, I feel like too many people don't get around to it when they find Ghibli movies

Peter R Iorfino

I can't wait for Princess Mononoke. By far my favorite Ghibli movie.

kaliwali

YES! Biggest time I noticed it in my anime rabbit hole journey so far was during Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle when Shinobu was having the flashback to when her and Tanjiro talked. "I'm always angry" and the Japanese VA was INCREDIBLE. The English version was so much less dramatic & just kind of... bland lol no offense to them. But that realization made me see just how different these stories hit if you're watching in sub vs dub! It's pretty insane.

TChang23

Oh 100% she was my favorite character and when I read it in the manga I couldn’t wait to see what her voice actress, Saori Hayami, would do with it. Shes probably a top 5 favorite voice actress of mine, she always does incredible work, even in lesser known series when the story isn’t as deep she always elevates her characters so well.

Sonya

I loved your reaction as always! Yeah the dub for this was pretty good. Unfortunately for most anime dubs they don't have the budget, and in many cases the VAs do the dubbing separately post production, whereas in the original Japanese casting the VAs get together in a studio and can work off each other, reacting to each other's timing. So I hope you'll continue reacting to the subbed version for 99% of the cases. You might be interested in "Shirobako" it's an anime - about making anime, and the anime industry. It's a pretty entertaining drama about "troubles in the workplace" on its own, but the anime studio setting makes it that much more intriguing if you are interested in anime.

Da OnlyTEEMZ

I’m so glad you decided to watch this movie in dub! It’s one of my all time favourite ghibli movies and “spirited away” being a close second with “my neighbour totoro” the background sound track for this movie is called “merry go round of life” and is composed by “Joe Hisaishi” Who also composed the music for most of the ghibli films. The sound track for this movie holds a very special place in my heart as it’s the reason why I wanted to learn how to play piano. In fact I brought a piano when I was 16 years old and the sound track for howls moving castle was the first piece I ever learnt to do play! I think I spent a solid month in my room just learning how to play the entirety of the song. And about a whole year trying to perfect it. Also if you’re going to be watching “spirited away”, might I request that you also watch it in dub? I grew up on the ghibli films watching them in English and for some reason feels more at….. “home”? Not too sure on how to explain it haha. But of course I won’t complain on whether you decide to watch it in sub either as I’m sure everyone else has their own preferences. Thanks for the reaction!!! Have a great day kali👍

hinaru

Yes! Princess Mononoke is my favourite Ghibli movie

KamikazeCDN

Haven't watched this one in awhile. Still really enjoy it, I always enjoyed how...whimsical it sort of it - not that Ghibli is missing that normally. I wouldn't stress too much about the sub vs dub. I know people do prefer one version over the other with anime, myself included but some people just get so crazy over it. If the English voice cast is attracting you more, watch it in dub. Personally I prefer sub like 99% of the time, I think Japanese VAs just sell the emotions better but there are some instances when the dub is just as good if not better (such as Edgerunners). Do I prefer this in sub? Sure. But it's not like the English is bad, I personally have a hard time not hearing just Christian Bale (and a little Batman) instead of the character of Howl. Great actor, voice actor...maybe not so much lol.

Psy

It's been a minute since I've watched this movie. Very much enjoyed your reaction to it. Looks like Spirited Away is the next one on your list, another great one, I'm hoping you will eventually watch Princess Mononoke (my personal favorite).

Why It

omg I just noticed your frieren mimic figure. I love that lmao

David L

One of my favorite Ghibli films! I can't wait for Spirited Away! I hope you watch Princess Mononoke after that. Great Reaction,Kali! Have a great day!🙂

Ian YY

One of the Ghibli films I didn't understand when I first watched it (I was little, lol). Time to rewatch! I LOVE THE MUSIC. I played this soundtrack when I went to Japan, attending a Youth Orchestra Exchange Camp with my school in Taiwan. It was an AMAZING experience.

Justyn

My jaw is constantly on the floor at just how stunningly gorgeous this movie looks

Justyn

The SCORE in castle in the sky is 10/10 my god

kaliwali

Ooooh okay! Not going to lie some of the plot points were really hard to digest on a first watch of this with so much happening lol. But that just makes the rewatchability super high! I thought Suliman had cursed howl because those star things were also there when she sucked the magic out of the Witch of the Waste. The little cut out people too! But thank you for explaining!!

LainWulf

Beautiful movie, i was due for a rewatch tho i had to do a "watch along" lol cus i just can’t watch anime in dub...it completely ruins the experience for me But yeah, definitely hope you will check out Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Ponyo, Porco Rosso and imo a very underrated and amazing movie, When Marnie was There...in sub ofc haha

Harkirat Singh

Another One is "Porco Rosso", it is underrated but it's a classic ghibli movie

Saniala

Ghibli dubs sure have some familiar names doing the voices. I enjoyed them so much that I didn't switch to subs on rewatches. But yeah, generally I'm leaning toward the sub side when it comes to anime.

Robert da Spruce

Wow! Talk about a stacked VA cast! I don’t recall any dub version of an anime with such well known actors. Is it a one off? Or are there more movies with similarly well known VA’s? Although the one drawback was every time I heard Billy Crystal voicing Calcifer, I couldn’t help but hear Mike Wazowski from Monster’s Inc. 😄 As far as story goes, I thought it was beautifully. But I was a little fuzzy on some things I get on what happened. And how everyone’s curses were broken. But I’m not exactly sure why each solution worked. Maybe I need to rewatch in Japanese. Maybe they explain things more. Or maybe it was really obvious, and I’m just dense 😊

Me

The sub versions is the OG dialogue. Sometimes the dub versions of anime content actually changes the dialogue, for whatever reason. I don't like that so prefer the sub dialogue
