This was a BEAUTIFULLY TRAGIC way to end this season 😭

I love how this season started just like the last with poisons, medicines, palace gossip.. But somehow we ended up in the middle of a full blown rebellion fueled by generations of resentment, pain, and the consequences of people in power.

The Shi Clan's history is so tragic. Shenmei spent so much of her life holding onto pain meanwhile Shishou loved her so deeply that he allowed that pain to take over his entire family. And poor Loulan. She was left carrying the weight of all these choices that she never made.

I think that's what hit me the most about this season.
Watching how easily pain can turn into hatred when it's never fully healed.
And how often the next generation ends up paying for it...

But Loulan OMG. I think she may be my favorite character from this season, easily. Realizing that Shisui, our sweet little quirky insect loving girl, was probably the most genuine version of herself 💔 She spent her whole life being told who to be. Watching her finally reveal her plan was such a proud but heartbreaking moment.

Her final dance absolutely broke my heart. It was taking everything in me not to just sob LOL.
But then seeing her alive at the end!? Going forward to a future that belongs to her alone??
Ugh it was everything I needed to walk away from this healed lol.

And Xiaolan's letter? Watching Maomao cry over the simple wish of sharing ice cream together again.. It reminded me that sometimes the smallest moments are the ones we end up missing the most 😭

Then there's Jinshi and Maomao 🔥 I have LOVED watching their relationship slowly grow beyond playful teasing and awkward moments into something built on genuine trust and understanding. Jinshi stepping into his responsibilities, choosing to protect lives over his own ego, and finally allowing Maomao to see him for who he truly is was such amazing character development.

I love that this finale didn't feel like everything is answered. That there's still more room to grow & watch the palace change after watching the past generation suffer. Gyokuyou giving birth to a son & becoming Empress soon. Maomao back working in the District. Her dad back at the palace.

After a season with so much pain... Somehow it ended on such a beautiful note.
'The Beginning' couldn't have been a more fitting title.
Some found forgiveness, some are still figuring out where they belong.
Some finally found freedom to choose their own path.

See you all for Season 3 in April!
Thank you all so much for your thoughts, reflections, corrections over things I've misunderstood in this insanely clever show. I appreciate you all & loved connecting over this beautiful anime!

Yay! Omg MDUD! I think that’s a good idea to wait for s3 to be nearly finished before starting it so you can watch in the way comfortable for you. I know I will always end up having to rewatch things too and it’s a lot to keep up with so I get it!

The ED for the second half of season 2 hits pretty hard after how this season ended.

Season 2 is absolute perfection, rewatching with your reactions was so much fun! Also as a suggestion, Hell's Paradise is an amazing show that I think you'd enjoy!

Thanks for the great reactions to Apothecary Diaries. it's been so much fun rewatching it and noticing extra details I didn't on a first watch. Hoping that after season 3 is finished we can watch something like March Comes in Like a Lion. I think you would really love it.

For me, I believe there are two reasons why Loulan cut Jinshin's face: 1. revenge for Lady Shenmei 2. harming a member of the royal family was considered capital punishment, so she chose death rather than life imprisonment. Thanks for reacting to season 2! There is also going to be a movie! So whenever season 3 is completed, you'll be reacting to that too one of these days! And Amazon Prime is going to have a live-action Apothecary Diaries in 2028! Lots of potential content!

Glad you enjoyed Apothecary diaries. There is also a movie coming out in cinemas on December 11th, but I imagine it will probably be a while until it comes out on Crunchyroll. Very excited for you to watch both JJK & My dress up darling next week. Both great shows!!

i have to say, while i do love, love, love my dress up darling, i feel like you should be warned that the first season has some.... moments that might be too far for you. they might make you cringe in an uncomfortable way. season 1 has way more of these moments, so if you hang in there until season 2 when the show as a whole gets way, way better for an already good show, you shouldnt regret it.

Yeah. I love MDuD, but it can definitely push the envelope at times, but the story as a whole is really well done. It's also one that a lot of reactors have to fight to put on YT as it gets a lot of copyright hits. More so seemingly than a lot of other anime.

Shisui's new name Tamamo might be a reference to Tamamo-no-Mae, a fox spirit in Japanese legend. Maybe she went to Japan (or this setting's Japan equivalent).

"How is she alive?" If you have a look at the hairpin you see an impact from a bullet in the top end of it. Maomao's tucking it into her clothing saved her. Great show though, some really emotional moments in season 2. Here's to Season 3 pulling on the heartstrings some more.

mitchhamilton64

"was she about to chop her finger off?" yeaaah, see why the other girls made a comment about moamao's common sense? also, apparently in the novel (idk how trust worthy this is because this was translated from japanese and translations ive found take liberties from the source material at times) when the kid interrupted maomao and jinshi, jinshi makes an inward comment like "maybe it wouldve been best if he never woke up."

Thank you so much for these kali! I'm watching the 3rd season so rewatching the 2 whole seasons with you not only served as a warm up but also to catch so many details again! Especially with the identity of loulan, there's just so many details there to be found, and clues. Gonna wait for you on the other side, and I'll be glad to rewatch the 3rd season with you when the right time comes :) You are the best reactor, thanks for being part of my sunday routine, I always waited for these! Also, the xiaolan letter it's enough to make a man cry. And also I think it's the first time that we see maomao cry, such a powerful moment.

Fer Rodriguez

Oh and btw, my dress up darling it's certainly a diffenrent anime. I love it so much and Marin it's one of my favorite characters, but the first season can be hard to swallow. Just be warned, and I think many in the comments are saying the same thing. And apparently can be quite hard when it comes to copyright issues.

Other than our boy Oda, this author knows how to write a good fakeout death with clues that foreshadow that the character isn’t actually dead. This season finale was truly spectacular.

Ok, this was good, but now I'm hyped for My Dress Up Darling...

Something else worth mentioning is that the scar may have a much deeper cultural and political significance beyond Loulan getting revenge for her mother and provoking the soldiers into killing her. In traditional Chinese culture, the emperor was considered the Son of Heaven, ruling under the Mandate of Heaven, which granted him the divine right to rule. The imperial family was therefore expected to uphold an image of dignity and perfection, both physically and morally. A permanent facial scar could be seen as more than just a cosmetic imperfection. It could undermine that image of imperial perfection, especially for someone who might one day ascend the throne. That could be why Basen reacted so strongly to Jinshi being injured and why Gaoshun punished him for failing to protect Jinshi. Ironically tho, since Jinshi has never wanted to become emperor, the scar might actually work in his favor if the same idea applies in The Apothecary Diaries. Also, you mentioned that they didn't know what they were subjecting the slaves to by sending them to the rear palace, but from my understanding, Shishou's proposal offered them a better alternative to being sold into slavery abroad. At least for the women, they had the opportunity to receive education and training, and eventually leave with better prospects after completing their term of service. Obviously, life in the rear palace wasn't perfect, but being sold into slavery in a foreign country offered no such assurances.

You might be interested in knowing why anime release schedules look the way they do. Japan has used two main models: year-round, or cour-based. A cour is a broadcast block, three months, 12-13 episodes. A production term is one team and one budget: usually a single cour, but sometimes two back-to-back or two split by a gap. The western "season" roughly maps to the production term, which is why a season can be 12 episodes or 26, delivered at once or in halves. Nearly all modern anime are cour-based, premiering almost always in January, April, July, or October in late-night slots. A production committee (consisting of a publisher, music label, broadcaster, and merchandiser) funds the term and decides mid-broadcast whether to fund another. Because the order is finite, staff can pace at 2-3 manga chapters per episode and finish on time. The Apothecary Diaries Seasons 1 and 2 were each two back-to-back cours, 24 continuous episodes apiece. Season 3 is one 24-episode production split across two cours in October 2026 and April 2027. The split-cour term buys the studio schedule room so the back half doesn't suffer if the first slips. Year-round shows work differently. They air in family time slots, are ad-funded, usually with a toy company as the main client, and consist of ~50 episodes a year indefinitely. Their hard constraint was to never catch up to the manga, so they slow pacing to one chapter per episode or less and inserted filler to buy time. That model is nearly gone, not enough animators to staff it, and streaming pays better per title than per episode, so committees would rather fund four cours a year than one endless show. One Piece was the last major holdout, ending 26 unbroken years in December 2025, they transitioned to the cour model in April 2026.

Something that goes unnoticed is that Jinshin trust Lihaku with Maomao after rescuing her, calling for him by name to protect her and get her out of the fortress.
