:D Was a fun to watch this reaction and was a great breakdown. She is a great artist and this was her first major hit. You kind of commented on it a bit but the big thing this song did was showcase her wordsmithing. She is incredible for mixing and rhyming between Japanese and English at the same time and some of her metaphors run super deep in her words as she writes all her own lyrics. For Info her character is a Shikigami, a japanese spirit that ushers the souls of the dead to the after life. Her design is sort of crossed with the grim reaper of western folklore as well which is why she carries a scythe. Calliope is part of the first Generation Hololive English branch, known as Myth, which is a group of girls that have and continue to break massive boundaries for Vtubers as a whole. Calli herself is first Vtuber to hold a record deal with a major label- Universal Records. She was the first to hold a world tour and the first ever Vtuber to make it onto Billboard Top 100 with her last album topping out I think at 47 or 48. Late last year though she got massively sick with Covid and couldn't stop coughing. This caused her to develop scar tissue in her lungs and she lost a lot of lung capacity and fell into a depression as she believed she wouldn't be able to continue singing. Ironmouse had always been a fan of Calli's since her debut and was inspired by her to start making music as a Vtuber. Funny enough it's now come full circle as seeing Ironmouse make music despite her condition is what Calli claims is her own inspiration to keep making music even if she can't hold notes or do these long fast raps anymore.

That was awesome. I did not even know what Vtubers was until joining to Patreon. It’s opening a whole new world

Andrew

You 100 percent need to react to end of a life and king that she sang with guwr gura

Andrew

Yup, and ironmouse and a ton of the vtubers from around the world gave her heartfelt messages on twitter when she posted about it. Especially ironmouse.

Bossjoe

Yeah it was sweet. To anyone who knows the industry the Myth girls are all super important to them.

Andrew

She grew up in Texas and her mom has a big southern accent and comes on stream sometimes and her dad is Italian. Pretty wild combo.

Context for the RIP message at the end is that Sep. 12, 2020 is the day of the debut stream for her Calli persona. This mv was first shown there and the final message was meant to represent the viewer "RIP YOU, PROBABLY wheneva - Sep 12, 2020" This spawned the meme in her community "dies from banger"

Vtubers are definitely not ALL styled as demons, but you are correct to pick up that it is a REALLY popular theme. Partly because some very successful VTubers have gone with it and people are trying to capture that success, and also because demons are hot and being hot is an effective strategy for any content creator 😂 It also fits well with the anime style, which a lot of people go for. I don't know anything about Mori Calliope specifically but the scythe and outfit are definitely giving demon/soul reaper. But you've also got VTubers that are just "normal" humans (whatever that means), vampires, various animal-based characters whether its like a furry or just a normal non-anthropomorphized animal. Some people go for inanimate objects with a face on it (popular streamer "Bread" is just a slice of bread with a smiley face). This song is CRAZY, though, I am hearing it for the first time and its so good. The way the line in the chorus drops with that cute "kudasai?" at the end is perfect.

Calli was my entry into vtubers which eventually led me to Ironmouse, Ado, and to your channel. I was in the crowd in person at the Ironmouse concert a few weeks ago that the Ironmouse/Calli video was from. Calli is from the US but has lived in Japan for probably close to a decade. She writes most of her own lyrics and one of my favorite parts of her music is the way she rhymes and uses wordplay between English and Japanese. I'd love to see you react to more of her music, especially as she's improved (and gotten more confident in) her singing. I'd also love to see your reaction to Nerissa Ravencroft and Elizabeth Rose Bloodflame, both from the same vtuber company as Calli. In particular, the 2 of them sang music from Clair Obscur along with Ironmouse at her concert. The video of that performance will hopefully be on Ironmouse's YT channel in a week or two.

So before joining hololive she was really into the Japanese underground rap scene and she had a lot of legitimate criticisms of but also some biases against the idol industry and culture for a while. So when she first debuted as calli part of her early persona was that she played into pretending to be a cutesy idol whose mask would easily slip to reveal the brash tomboyish rapper she really is. This bit was also made funnier by the fact her early streams were plagued with technical issues

I came back when I saw some Mori reactions. She's definitely become one of my favorite artists over the past few years and really hope to see more reactions of her!

This might be one of those "you had to be there things" but when Calli came on the scene with this song is was literally earth shattering. Nothing in the vtuber scene sounded like this. It was completely out of left field both stylistically and lyrically. It was irreverent and biting. Hololive at the time (2020) had the image of being very upbeat and poppy, and Calli (and the rest of her debut generation) were their first primary English language talents and were expected to follow their predecessors. This song was released in her very first stream, unprompted, unexpected, and everyone in the vtuber sphere was stun locked by it.

The "Marble drop" you noticed is actually dice dropping I believe. No idea why Mori Calliope would've included the sound of dice in her first single... ...apropos of nothing, have you ever heard of the indie rapper Demon Dice? She has a lot of similarities with Mori Calliope in terms of style, genre, voice, interests, lingual abilities, flow, lyricism, IRL origins, DNA, etc....it's really too bad she got a job at "Applebees" that takes up so much of her time right before Calli debuted, I bet they would've been great collabing together!
