What an awesome guide. I didn't know a lot about Red Velvet, so this was great to watch. It is very cool to see Yeri has a lot of song credits to her name as she was very close to Shinee's Jonghyun. Just a few comments for you, Tim: -BoA is pronounced as one word (like the snake) and not split individually. She is SM's first female solo artist and is credited with saving SM from bankruptcy in the early 2000s. She was with SM for 25 years and left last year. -For your question on the visual member: Koreans have a specific standard for what they think is beautiful. When they say a member is their "visual" member, it means that member is the one closest to meeting these standards. -In K-pop groups, the "Main" Vocalist/Dancer means they are technically the best in the group, getting most of the difficult parts in their songs. "Lead" means they are second best. Hence, Seulgi is their best dancer and 2nd best vocalist -Korean Trot Music is traditional Korean music that has gone through modernization in the current day. It is often called Korea's Country Music. -K-dramas may have started back in the day as soaps, but now they are what we describe as any Korean episodic TV series. If you heard of Squid Game, Netflix's most-watched show, it is a kdrama even if there is no romance in the story. You should react to one if you have never seen one!

Now I really need Tim to watch something like Business Proposal😂😂

Rye

Yay! ❤️

Ashley

That would be so fun to watch! I thought I saw someone recommend I Dol I in the long form recommendation post. Something like that would be fun too!

Dani

I was so nervous. It was my first time doing a guide

As for how their group comeback will work, I don't know exactly how it will work for Red Velvet, but other groups in SM have a similar situation. Looking at other groups, for example, 3 members of Super Junior still have group contracts with SM, but they're under different agencies for their solo activities. From what I've seen, everyone participates in all group activities, has concerts, and their group activities haven't changed. We also have the situation with Girls Generation, where half of the group is no longer under SM, and since then, they've focused more on their solo careers. However, they did release an album together under SM, and for their comeback, the members who aren't under SM sign a contract for a specific album (at least that's what I understood from what Tiffany said). Onew and Taemin from SHINee are also not under SM, but they also released a group album under SM and are working on a new one. EXO's DO and Lay aren't signed to SM either, yet they were on EXO's latest album, and DO even performed on SMTOWN. I'm guessing Red Velvet's situation is closer to Girls Generation than Super Junior.

You did a great job! Thank you so much Dani! 💖

I got to go to Wendy's performance in Pasadena during the US leg of her tour. She's amazing live and I want her to have a live band with her all the time. ❤️ There's a few recordings of her different performances on YouTube if you're ever interested in checking out her concert in the future 🥰

Ashley

It was really great!

Rye

I think Mamamoo and Blackpink are kind of like that too with Wheein and Hwasa under different management for solo activities. I think for Blackpink, they're all under different labels for solo stuff, plus additional labels for global management. 🤔

Here is a pretty good vid on the generations, although it is 5 years old. Therefore does not include the newest generations. However DKDKTV did a really good job and also they are Koreans and I trust them more to do it right, then a lot of kpop fans xD https://youtu.be/kPS4tCHT6SA?si=7xB3IZhJ_V3lNE7Z

Oh! Are we transitioning from SKZ to RV? I kid, I kid. RV is an all time group......excited to watch Tim go down this journey

Handsome Hayeon Can't Hurt You

Yeah, its been pretty up and down with SM groups and members leaving and who departs SM on good terms vs bad terms and the impact it has on comebacks when that happens

Handsome Hayeon Can't Hurt You

One SLIGHT (not even a correction) little thing.....yes SM groups tend to be known for their vocals but the reality is, they really are just known for EVERYTHING. SM is the company that started modern kpop (they invented the trainee system, they're the reason why its boy group/girl group separated, etc). Being such......everything about them (for the most part) is top of the top. They get the top trainees and when they train them, they're known to break down EVERYTHING and start from scratch with every trainee and train them to the top levels of vocals, dance, rap, etc.

Irene is a little bit of an outlier with her age (even in 3rd gen). Basically, she never had aspirations to become an idol-i think she actually wanted to go into journalism and when she went to that SM audition where she was tagging along with a friend she was already around 18 or so which is pretty late for trainees

"visual" is basically how pretty or good looking you are. One thing you need to realize about korea (and kpop) is we aren't shy about commenting about people's appearances and aren't as uncomfortable discussing it as western audiences are. As gross as something like the "Korean Beauty Standard" is, its a reality in korea and it isn't by coincidence that the most popular idols and actors/actresses just HAPPEN to be the prettiest/most good looking

Oh gosh, trot music. How to explain trot music........ So, Im not sure if you've heard traditional korean music (gugak) that originates from the joseon era but certain aspects of it include a lot of voice bending, singing in a pentatonic scale, a particular rough/raw vocal tone Trot is basically the modernization of that traditional music and techniques but the music is very.....how to describe.......cheesy? Lots of sequined jackets, can be very goofy on the happier/brighter songs while at the same time VERY INCREDIBLY sad on the ballad end. An apt comparison is how the Trans-Siberian Orchestra modernizes classical orchestral music You just kind of have to hear it to understand. It's a genre thats absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED by korean grandmas and grandpas. I'll link a couple modern trot songs that are super popular (both male and female) https://youtu.be/X0T8wwbh4Tw?si=r3uVPfDyvz_vXWW2 https://youtu.be/PkCXsFBjCMw?si=iRabJU8wmJkkSjPf

K-dramas are just TV series (like The Pitt or Industry is here). Typically they are only 1 season (a small few have managed to get a 2nd or 3rd season) and these days are usually 12 or 16 episodes (in the past they were much longer......like 21 episodes). There are some daytime soaps that get sort of grouped under the "k-drama" moniker but they're sort of like soaps here......very long running shows (although not infinite) but they can get to 50-100 episodes and many actors actually still do these day time soaps for a steady paycheck since primetime kdramas are limited by nature and the competition is so fierce to get cast Like Squid Game is considered a k-drama. The 2018 kdrama listed for Joy (in the video its the great seducer but the show is actually called Tempted.....I think Dani might've gotten those titles from a translated page or site) is basically Dangerous Liasons set in a modern setting In these videos when it says an artist has done an OST, it usually means they sang a song that was on the soundtrack of one of these kdramas

A part of my heart still holds out for a future Girl's Generation ot9 moment. 😩 Jessica was my favorite 💔 I'm hoping we don't have to wait super long for Red Velvet to perform again as a full group 💖

Dani

I forgot to mention that Joy plays the piano. As for playing instruments, it can vary depending on the agency, but at SM, they have to learn to play instruments during their trainee days. Many SM artists play at least one instrument, usually guitar or piano. There was even a performance once called SM Town SBS GAYO DAEJUN - The Sound of Hallyu, where they played instruments.
