Whereas Star Wars is films first and tv shows as largely supplemental, Star Trek is the opposite. The shows were what drive the story primarily and the films came later. This movie ( and the next 5 after it) were the continuation of what had started in the old 60s show and then movies 7-10 continue what had started on Star Trek: The Next Generation (the show with Patrick Stewart). I love Star Trek. Star Trek The Next Generation is my favorite show of all time. But I think its tough to start with this film as your first exposure. I can't wait to watch this reaction and see how you view it!

This was fun Abby, thank you! 1. What you watched was actually the Theatrical Cut, not the Director's Cut. I'm not sure what happened, but I am sure it has to be Amazon's fault... I couldn't even find the Theatrical Cut on there when I was trying to follow along. Thankfully I also had it on Blu Ray. The funny part is, even though the Director's Cut is a bit longer (2h 16m), its actually better because the director cut back on a bunch of those excessively long and drawn out v effects scenes to make the movie flow a little better and be less of a slog. Related to that... 2. Star Wars came out first (1977). And that was a big part of why this movie was the way it was. Star Trek the tv show ended in 1969, so it had been ten years since there was any Star Trek on screen. This movie was supposed to be their big return. But Star Wars had considerably raised the bar and there was a lot of pressure at Paramount to live up to expectations in a post Star Wars era. So they poured many millions of dollars into the visual effects of this movie (an amount that was a lot more than usual for 1979). The word is that the studio was so hung up on getting the most out of the money they spent on visual effects that there ended up being all these excessively long glamour shots of the ship, of the cloud, etc. to show off what they accomplished visually (which still didn't hold a candle to Star Wars, but whatever). It really slowed down the movie and many think distracted from an otherwise pretty simple story. 3. I laughed out loud when you commented on how long it took that shuttle to finally dock to the ship. That scene is like... way too long. I have never met a Star Trek fan who has watched that movie and not laughed at that part. Or Shatner hamming it up as Kirk - this was like peak quotable Kirk. "Bones, I need you.... BADLY", ROFL 4. I was concerned about you not knowing these characters going into this, but after viewing your reaction, I was reminded that the movie actually does a decent job catching you up. You know the key players and can see the bonds they have with one another, particularly Kirk, Spock, and Bones. Still would have been better to have seen a couple episodes of the old show, but the movie didn't leave you completely in the dark. 5. Is Star Trek something you are intrigued by? As you say, it has a strong following and would make for some popular reaction content, if you're up to it. Are you familiar with the reaction channel Popcorn in Bed? Cassie tackled Star Trek a few years back and I thought her approach made a lot of sense. She had a poll and her followers chose a handful of old episodes to watch and she did those and then moved on with the movies. Then she did the same thing for each season of Star Trek: The Next Generation and then moved on with their movies. My personal opinion is that Next Generation is worth doing in its entirety, but... its a lot. You know, 1987... none of these wimpy 10 episode seasons, lol... often up to 26 episodes per season, 7 seasons. Not sure if you would want to tackle that - then again, you are the reactor that took on Clone Wars and Rebels in their entirety, which I had never seen before, so... who knows? lol 6. Jerry Goldsmith was the composer, absolute legend. The opening title theme from this movie would later be used as the main theme to Star Trek: The Next Generation, one of the all time best tv show themes ever, imho. Thank you for tackling this. If you decide to do any more Star Trek, I for one will be behind you 100%!
