MY MAN GODFREY (1936) - Full Watch Along

My Man Godfrey is a 1936 American screwball comedy film directed by Gregory La Cava and starring William Powell and Carole Lombard, who had been briefly married years before appearing together in the film. The screenplay for My Man Godfrey was written by Morrie Ryskind and Eric S. Hatch, with uncredited contributions by La Cava, based on Hatch's 1935 novel, 1101 Park Avenue. The story concerns a socialite who hires a derelict to be her family's butler, and then falls in love with him.

Congrats on the watch-through; it was too much for me even as a viewer, and the juice didn't seem worth the squeeze... was a couple of attempts spread over months before I made it all the way through.

This was a classic “screw-ball” comedy. I loved your reaction. If you want a more modern example (but still over 50 years old!), check out “What’s up, Doc?” With Ryan O’Neal and Barbra Streisand. I’m sure you’d love it!

That was fun. Carol Lombard I also know from Mr. and Mrs. Smith. William Powell starred in the Thin Man movies, which I watched a lot as a kid. I just had to look up who played the dad as I recognized his very distinctive voice-- Eugene Pallette who I've seen in a few things including as Friar Tuck in the Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood (did you know Errol was Tasmanian?).

That was actually pretty hilarious. I love the manic pace of the whole thing. It definitely isn’t boring.
