CASABLANCA (1942) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid. Filmed and set during World War II, it focuses on an American expatriate (Bogart) who must choose between his love for a woman (Bergman) and helping her husband (Henreid), a Czechoslovak resistance leader, escape from the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis. The screenplay is based on Everybody Comes to Rick's, an unproduced stage play by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison. The supporting cast features Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson. Hello everyone and welcome to The Coby Show! I loved your excitement at all the famous lines. “Frankly my dear…” is from Gone with the Wind. I’m impressed you guessed early on, correctly, that “Play it again Sam” is an example of the Mandela Effect. (Aided by a Woody Allen movie by that name, inspired by Casablanca, that came out in the 70s).

It would be fun focusing on the most quoted films,I'm thinking of 'Sunset boulevard' 1950 for a next request.....

The scene where we first meet Rick wearing the white tux, reminds me so much of the way we first see Indiana Jones at the start of Temple of Doom. I don’t think it was coincidence. In fact, I think George Lucas once said that Jabba The Hutt was influenced by one of the characters, the big guy wearing the fez, and white suit (I can’t remember the character’s name) . Obviously the “I love you/ I know” scene between Han and Leia,” in The Empire Strikes Back was influenced by it. I never realized the plot was centered around WWII, I always assumed it was a crime thriller, and upon reading the comments in the live stream I realized I had confused this film with The Maltese Falcon.

I'm kind of surprised this is your first Bogart or Bergman film. What were your impressions of them as actors or even as movie stars? Are you interested in more movies with either one of them? Or Curtiz as a director?

Thank you for watching this amazing film.

Casablanca has always been my favorite movie of all time and Bogart is my all time favorite actor. I seen this hundreds of times and that is literal hahaha What did you think about Humphrey Bogart, screen presence? You ask if Bogart was in a movie with Katharine Hepburn, the answer yes, Bogarts only Oscar for Best Actor "The African Queen" (1951). Have you seen that movie? Were you surprise on how many movie quotes are remembered from this movie? "Play it again, Sam" is one that many think of, when they think of Humphrey Bogart, but is never said. It find myself always correcting people who say that line, and think it is in the movie. loL Were you surprised when you found out that it was never said? You said at the beginning that you were nervous what was it that made you feel that way?

If you're looking for another movie from that era with similar stellar acting I highly recommend the Alfred Hitchcock version of "Rebecca" with amazing performances by Laurence Olivier, the adorable Joan Fontaine and Judith Anderson (Australian actress). Another amazing piece of filmmaking and one of the earlier Hitchcock classics.

I watched your full watch-along reaction to Casablanca. It was my first full watch-along ever. It was a quite a different experience than watching the your edited YouTube reactions. You’re really quite insightful. I’ve seen Casablanca so many times, it’s hard to remember my own first time reaction, but I’m sure that you picked up on a lot more than I did the first time I saw the film. If you felt like you weren’t sure until the end if Ilsa would end up with Rick or Victor, you’re in legendary company. Bogart (Rick), Bergman (Ilsa), and Henreid (Victor) didn’t know either until the last day of shooting. In fact Michael Curtiz had not yet decided which way that would go. Casablanca was never supposed to such a great classic. During shooting Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart thought it was a disaster. Michael Curtiz was revising the script on a daily basis. It was expected to just one of about 50 films that year churned out by Warner Studios. Someone forgot to tell Michael Curtiz who demonstrated a master class in film direction and film making. If I might make a suggestion, consider watching it again. There are so many more details that most people don’t see the first time. Especially the directorial styles that Curtiz used. Thank you for a great reaction!
