Did you know Lacombe (the French scientist) was played by legendary French New Wave director, Francois Truffaut?

Rich Campbell

Spielberg's parents divorced, Father a Computer Scientist, Mother a Musician. When the aliens visit us, Spielberg has both learn to communicate via computers and music. Explains everything.

I can't remember in what film edition but the actor Carl Weathers R.I.P. (Apollo Creed from the Rocky films) makes his first cinematic appearance as one of the army personnel during the evacuation scene.👍🏾👏🏾

That was a really special, emotional reaction! You are 100% correct: on a big screen, this was INCREDIBLE! Definitely see it on a big screen if you ever get a chance! I was laughing: yes, that is Phoebe's mom and dad in this movie!!! Teri Garr and Bob Balaban! They're both in tons of movies. He was also in Seinfeld as an NBC executive who dates Elaine, so maybe you remember him from that as well. PS: Don't worry about Roy leaving his family; Gillian took photos! Remember? She can show the family and let them know where he's gone! So all's well that ends well! PSS: I was 8 years old in 1977. I liked Star Wars, but I LOVED Close Encounters, which came out 6 months later. That's the one that blew my mind. Still does!

PS Teri Garr was also in "Tootsie", not sure if you saw that, she's fantastic in that. Also in Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein". Also in Scorsese's "After Hours"! Amazing 80s film!

Coby, I like your reaction when you saw the Devils tower on the TV. Yes the poster later shows the mountain, which I hate when posters later reveal, something that the movie is hiding until the right time. The original Theatrical release poster did not show the mountain. wish I could attach a picture of it.

Teri Garr was his wife, she was in "Young Frankenstein" She died from complications of multiple sclerosis in Los Angeles on October 29, 2024. I was able to meet her before her death. she was kind. Did you already look her up?

I remember seeing this movie when I was a child and loved it. Spielberg was dissatisfied with the film because the studio rushed it to come out. Spielberg went back and wanted to do a directors cut and the studio green lighted it, as long as he showed the inside of the mothership, so he added SS Cotopaxi; and Mothership interior for that release. He then recut the movie again to make the one your saw, removing the inside of the mothership. Spielberg said he never should have shown the inside of the mothership, it have remained a mystery, which I agree.

Coby, your reaction to the kid being returned is so great. The whole time watching this again, I thought to myself “that scene is going to make her so happy.” I’ve only ever seen the director’s cut, because that’s what I have on DVD. So I don’t know how different the other cut is.

Melinda Dillon is the actress who played Barry's mom. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' and also for the film 'Absence of Malice' (1981). She also received a 1963 Tony Award nomination for her Broadway debut in the original production of 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'. However, she is probably best remembered as the mother in the holiday classic 'A Christmas Story' (1983) co-starring Darren McGavin.

Yes, the actor who played the French interpreter, Bob Balaban, was Phoebe's father in 'Friends'. If you watch '2010: The Year We Make Contact' (the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey') he plays Dr, Chandra, the creator of HAL. He is also in another sci-fi/horror film, 'Altered States', directed by Ken Russell and starring William Hurt in his film debut.

Matthew Murdick

Excellent reaction - as always! Williams' score in those final sequences always get me!
