BLOODSPORT (1988) - Full Watch Along

Bloodsport is a 1988 martial arts film directed by Newt Arnold. An American-Hong Kong co-production, the film stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, with a supporting cast of Leah Ayres, Forest Whitaker, Donald Gibb, Roy Chiao, and Bolo Yeung. The film centers on Frank Dux (Van Damme), a United States Army Captain and ninjutsu practitioner who competes in an underground full-contact martial arts tournament called the Kumite in Hong Kong. Based on Dux's real-life claims, the film was marketed as a true story. It was one of Van Damme's first lead roles and showcased his abilities, launching his career as a mainstream action star.

I was 10. Probably already as tall as him. He started as a gymnast. He’s small. Athletic. You’ve never seen “Karate Kid” or “Enter the Dragon?” I know you’re small. But cute. There are advantages to being tall. Even if you’re not the most coordinated. When I was working out. I had huge muscles. No. Steroids. All natural.

Jean Claude was a good action actor. Do think this was one of his best. Universal soldier with dolph Lundgren aka (drago from Rocky IV). Awol was a another I thought was a good one of his. Think it was called lion heart in the States. I burnout quickly as I felt his films got to samey after a while. Another good reaction from our stunning coby.

From what I read, Frank Dux was an expert in Ninjutsu, and opened his own school. He has stated that he won a secret tournament called the Kumite in 1975. However, that has been disputed, because nobody could prove that the tournament, or his instructor Senzo Tanaka, even existed. But Dux did work as a fight choreographer on another Van Damme film called Lionheart. I never saw it, but I can’t imagine it’s very different from Bloodsport. From what I remember about Kickboxer, it pretty much has a similar plot to this one. But these movies are just good cheesy fun. Cannon Films did a lot of these types of movies in the 80s. There’s a great documentary about the two brothers that ran Cannon, but I forget what it’s called, totally worth checking out though.

No idea if or how much you play computer games, but JCVD was recently the featured "Celebrity Elusive Target" in the Hitman game. He was known in-game as "The Splitter" for his habit of doing the splits. So fun!

One of my favs. Always gets me amped up to workout. The real frank was kind of a con artist they say so most of this isn’t true it’s been highly debunked for awhile unfortunately. But yeah van dam was the shit back in the day. Lotta cocaine though, man liked his cocaine 😂

Coby, you have not seen Karate Kid? that is a must watch, if you love the 80's lol

Frank and Jackson had better chemistry than Frank and the reporter. Jackson was also Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds. JCVD’s, same with a lot of the action stars acting got better in future movies.

Above The Law needs to be on your 80s action List. Midnight Run is a great movie too

Academy Award winning actor in this movie believe it or not. Obviously it's cheesy. I think the production crew probably spent a lot of the budget on blow and vo'd a lot of the actors. But Van Damme was pretty gifted athletically. And for real, there's some amazing location shots. Places that don't exist anymore that were difficult to get access to safely. Some of these shots I think are legit. Also I have fun watching a dude kick really high and do the splits a bunch.

A Martial Arts based tv series was Kung Fu 1972. You can watch the series and the pilot movie on Amazon. It takes you through the training of the main character named Cain in China at a Buddhist Monastery.
