THIS IS SPINAL TAP (1984) - Full Watch Along

This Is Spinal Tap (also known as This Is Spın̈al Tap: A Rockumentary by Martin Di Bergi[a]) is a 1984 American mockumentary comedy film co-written and directed by Rob Reiner in his feature directorial debut. The film's starring trio, who also co-wrote the film, are Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer. Guest, McKean and Shearer play members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, which is characterized as "one of England's loudest bands". Reiner plays Martin "Marty" Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker who follows them on their American tour. The film satirizes the behavior and musical pretensions of rock bands and the perceived hagiographic tendencies of rock documentaries such as The Song Remains the Same (1976) and The Last Waltz (1978), and follows the similar All You Need Is Cash (1978) by the Rutles.[5] Most of its dialogue was improvised and dozens of hours were filmed.

Every band has a Spinal Tap moment. I was in a band that played after a puppet show. It was a festival with all kinds of entertainment, and I’ll be damned if they didn’t put a kids puppet show on right before us, a loud alternative rock band. All I could think about was when Jeanine said “If I told them once, I told them a thousand times to put Spinal Tap first, and Puppets Show last. For the record we did have a bigger dressing room than the puppets. 😆😆😆😆

The look on your face in the thumbnail pretty much says it all. Have you seen other movies in this genre like A Might Wind or Best in Show? All are well worth the watch!

Hey Coby, I’m going to answer some of of your questions about this movie because it’s one of my top 10 of all time. First of all, you were totally right about Michael Mckean he played Lenny on Laverne & Shirley. Christopher Guest wrote and directed Best in Show, which is hilarious. Harry Shearer does the lion’s share of supporting voices on the Simpsons. All three of them were in the cast of SNL at some point. There is a soundtrack album, they all really play, and in the 90s they did a second album, and a real tour. They also play a folk group in a similar “mockumentary” called A Mighty Wind.

The excellent movie “Bob Roberts” pays homage to Spinal Tap by re-enacting the “getting lost backstage” scene.

Great watching this again, such a fun movie, all these actors really could play. Yes Michael McKean was Lenny of Lenny and Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley. He is also in Better Call Saul
