THE KARATE KID (1984) - MOVIE REACTION - Full Watch Along

The Karate Kid is a 1984 American martial arts drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and written by Robert Mark Kamen. It is the first film in The Karate Kid franchise. The film stars Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, Elisabeth Shue, and William Zabka. The story follows Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), an Italian-American teenager from New Jersey who moves with his widowed mother to the Reseda neighborhood of Los Angeles. There, LaRusso encounters harassment from bullies, one of whom is Johnny Lawrence (Zabka), the ex-boyfriend of LaRusso's love interest, Ali Mills (Shue). LaRusso is taught karate by a handyman and war veteran named Mr. Miyagi (Morita) to help LaRusso defend himself and compete in a karate tournament against his bullies.

Yet another great movie from 1984. As you recently said in another movie reaction, 1984 was a great year.

Thanks for watching this, it made my day. One of my favorite movies growing up. The second one is great too

Coby, I knew you would like this one and yes The Karate Kid II is worth seeing. The song "Cruel Summer" became a big hit because of this movie.

Coby, you laughed at them always at "Golf-N-Stuff" I remember as a kid in the 80's always going to Golf N Stuff at least every other weekend, it was the place to hang out. lol it has changed some, no more water slide, but still here in Norwalk California. Still fun and gone there for mini golf. lol

IMO Karate Kid 2 is on par with the original. KK3 and NKK are ok But I’d skip unless you’re watching Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai is the name of the series on Netflix and it’s got Johnny and Daniel reprising their roles but looks at life more through Johnny’s POV. Adventures in Babysitting… one of my faves from the 80s. THE line on the subway train is burned into my mind. Another fun one from the 80s with Elisabeth Shue is Cocktail, also with Tom Cruise. All my 5ks I wore the Karate Kid headband. When I was in Anaheim for work I took a ride out to Daniel’s apartment building. It’s an actual residence in Reseda. Also love that you referenced Rocky, as they had the same director. I think I heard You’re the Best was written for Rocky but they went another direction. Sorry for being long winded, these are my comfort flicks- can’t wait for Crocodile Dundee 2. 1 was so fun to see with you.

My take would be that the first one stands head and shoulders above the others... but the second one is still a very worthy effort! I think the super tragic backstory is actually key--it makes Mr. Miyagi a three-dimensional character. One piece I couldn't tell whether it was on your radar screen--it's not just that his wife and child died in childbirth, it happened (it seems) because they were in the internment camps during WWII. No idea how internationally known all that is, but if you google Korematsu it'll fill you in on one of the larger stains on this country's history.

About danged time! Glad you enjoyed it!

The "eyebrows" kid you didn't like, Dutch, was played by Steve McQueen's son. I think I remember that none of the Cobra Kai kids had trained Karate before being cast, but they took training seriously and were good athletes (Zabka was a wrestler) so clearly got quite good. The guy Johnny fought in the semifinals was an actual black belt and was Morita's stunt double in the season beating up the bullies. Pat Morita was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar. The sequel is cute but not as good as the first one. The third one is not so good, unless you like unintentional comedy. I should go back and finish the show; it was pretty fun. Watching this before you got deeper into Community was good so you can appreciate one episode later that references it.

Glad you enjoyed it, I haven't seen it in a while and I'm surprised how well it's held up. I'm also a fan of the second, if you watch it you'll see why, it's quite different in a good way. Miyagi's backstory served several purposes. For him to serve as an American soldier as his pregnant wife was sent to an intern camp and then died gives him a real and tragic backstory that is not forgotten by Japanese-Americans to the this day. George Takei was sent to one. Had I been alive at that time I would have as well. So I appreciate the awareness it brings. It shows you never know what someone has gone through until you get to know them, like this odd, quiet janitor. It also serves to motivate Daniel who then starts training on his own in earnest. And it also shows us how Miyagi was living in isolation still mourning and only because of Daniel's good nature and need for help was he able to lower his walls and let someone in his world. It makes their connection so much more meaningful and explains why he let Daniel wear his symbol (that his wife had sewn) and gave him a car. Daniel was the son he never had, and perhaps for Daniel it was the father he never had. This also sets them up nicely for the second film.

Hey Coby. I enjoyed the watch-along. I think it’s pretty cool that you were born in such an iconic year that gave us so many great movies. If you had to pick one movie from 1984 as your favorite what would it be? Also, I think you would like the Cobra Kai series. You could probably jump right in at any point because they show a lot of flashbacks from the sequels. It helped me because I had seen none of them accept the first one.

To really understand the character and strength of Mr. Miyagi, you have to examine closely the night he got drunk. He was thinking about his wife and unborn child. But when Daniel read the letter he mentioned that they died in a concentration camp in the United States. It is called the greatest American injustice since slavery. In these camps there was not adequate medical services and that is why his wife and unborn child died. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internment_of_Japanese_Americans ; But what compounds the tragedy, Mr. Miyagi was fighting as a american soldier at the same time. As for the medal that Daniel picked up and read the words valor. Most people who never served in the military did not catch the significance of the scene, but the medal was the Medal of Honor, AKA Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award for bravery the United States has. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor . So that just gives a little more insight into this fictional character and what he really represented in the film.

I enjoyed that it's been years since I've seen it, and I love the relationship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel. Mr. Miyagi was like the father Daniel never had, and Mr. Miyagi was more than a teacher; he was a friend and father figure, and I loved the respect Daniel showed him, even when he thought he might have been being used. I love it when Coby gets excited and does her fingernail drum roll. I knew she would enjoy this. I'm looking forward to Enter the Dragon.

Much like "Rocky I & II" is not about Boxing but a love story, "The Karate Kid" is not about fighting it is about friendship and life. I know you did not like the dark moment for Mr. Miyagi but I think it was important for a couple of reasons. Losing his wife and son left a hole in his life and heart (he was out of balance) which was filled with Daniel, who became is surrogate son and friend. Also, life is about yin and yang or light and dark... the dark part of Mr. Miyagi's life made this light part of his life shine even brighter. Definitely watch "The Karate Kid II"! "The Karate Kid III" is hit and miss for some people but is worth the watch if you are ever planning on watching "Cobra Kai", as there are references to all three movies in the T.V. Series. I loved the 1st & 2nd Seasons but it started going downhill for me after that.

Watch the 2 sequels then start watching Cobra Kai the TV series. The TV series is fantastic and will answer all the questions you asked.

Mark Knight

I will have to watch Paris, Texas, I’ve always heard good things about it. I always liked Splash. It was one of the laser disc movies we had when I was a kid. Those real early ones, that you had to flip over to finish the movie.

The Karate Kid movies are great! This one is awesome! 2 is great as well. The 3rd one is good but not as good as 1 and 2. I grew up watching this and loved it! So glad you chose to watch it! Watch #2, it's well worth it!
