SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE (1978) - Full Watch Along

Superman: The Movie (also marketed as Superman) is a 1978 superhero film based on DC Comics featuring the eponymous character, played by Christopher Reeve. It is the first of four installments in the Superman film series starring Reeve as Superman. The film was directed by Richard Donner based on a screenplay by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman, and Robert Benton. The film features an ensemble cast including Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El (Brando), and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Kidder) while battling the villainous Lex Luthor (Hackman).

Yet another blast from the past! The marketing tag line was “You will believe a man can fly.” Gene Hackman as Lex Luther. I’ll definitely watch your reaction.

Man you are on a roll Coby, another great movie from my childhood! no they didn't say the line haha they used it in the old school tv show (which is awesome too) and before that they used it in the old 1941 Fleischer cartoons. That look on your face from the thumbnail is pure gold! that's how I felt when I first saw this around 83-84ish or so when I was 4 or 5 lol

That was fun, though I own the extended cut so had to pause you a lot, but it worked out ok. Superman's clothes I think are best explained by a man named Bill, who one Beatrix wants to kill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_cEoK1mXms Metropolis is a fictional Northeastern City, while originally having a heavy Toronto influence for its skyline, has been heavily NYC influenced since. "The statement "Metropolis is New York by day; Gotham City is New York by night" has been variously attributed to comics creators Frank Miller and John Byrne." In terms of atmosphere, Batman writer and editor Dennis O'Neil has said that, figuratively, "Batman's Gotham City is Manhattan below 14th Street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November, and Metropolis is Manhattan between 14th and 110th Streets on the brightest, sunniest July day of the year"

Coby, First let me say, if you have not seen "Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story" it is a must watch! Even though tragic, his and his wife Dana's story is truly inspirational. There are so many Easter Eggs in this film that unless you are old enough (like me), a huge film enthusiast (like me), or just a plain nerd (like me), some might miss them. As I watch with you I will try to list all that I know and if anybody else has some that I missed, please let me know. 1) There is definitely some chemistry between Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard who plays the 1st Elder on Krypton. They played together in two other films, the 1962 epic "Mutiny On The Bounty" with Brando as Fletcher Christian and Howard as Captain Bligh. The other film was the 1965 film "Morituri". 2) General Zod is played by the incomparable Terence Stamp who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in his very first film playing the title role in the 1962 film "Billy Budd" and has also played in some other iconic films like the 1978 "Superman II", the 1994 "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", 1999's "The Limey", the corporate raider Sir Lawrence Wildman in 1987's "Wall Street", 1988 "Young Guns", 1999 "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, 2003 "The Haunted Mansion", 2005 "Elektra", 2008 "Wanted", 2008 "Yes Man", 2008 "Valkyrie", 2014 "Big Eyes", and 2021 "Last Night in Soho. 3) The scene when Clark is running home along next the train, the woman sitting next to the little girl with the binoculars is Noel Neill. She played Lois Lane starting in the second season of the 50s tv series "Adventures of Superman" alongside George Reeves. 4) Jonathan Kent is played by Glenn Ford! One of the most popular and prolific movie stars of "Hollywood's Golden Age" with a career that started in the 40s and lasted more than 50 years. 5) Two more of the quick cameos that were big names at the time were Rex Reed, the famous film critic as himself. He appears just as Clark and Lois walk out of the Daily Planet together on Clark's first day. Then there is the incredible Larry Hagman! Of course he had a long career in movies and TV but his big breakout role was as Air Force Major Anthony Nelson in "I Dream of Jeannie". Then when most people thought his career was over he has a cameo in this film as the Army Major in the missile convey. Superman: The Movie had principle filming from March 28th, 1977 through October 28th, 1978, well somewhere during the 5 seconds he shows up in this film he also took the role as one J.R. Ewing an oil baron who lived and worked in a little North Texas town called Dallas! That town was also the namesake of the tv series he would play in and "Dallas" the TV series would go on to become one of the most watched and famous TV series of All Time! "Dallas" premiered on CBS on April 2nd, 1978. By the time "Superman: The Movie" was released on December 10th, 1978, Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing was going on to become as immortal as Superman! 6) I know there are more but the last little tidbit that most people miss is that the story and one of the lead screenwriters just happens to be Mr. Mario Puzo. He just happen to write another story called "The Godfather"!!!

Great reaction! As good as Henry Cavill is, Christopher Reeve is Superman! Superman II is great as well. After that.....

Doug Fisher

Gee... a girl NOT going for the nice guy... I am SHOCKED, SHOCKED!! Well, not that shocked. Christopher Reeve IS Superman. RIP You really saw how well he played both roles when he was about to tell Lois who he really was in her apartment; the transformation between Clark and Superman was amazing. It is and was originally titled "Superman: The Movie", though many just call it "Superman".

Coby, where is the poll and who can vote? Because I'd like to throw my support behind watching Superman II. Since you're running the classics. I'm going to suggest Keaton's Batman. It's a lot more camp, than Superman but they are closer in tone than Nolan's or Zack Snyder's. Of course you might have to stop for Ironman if you haven't already. You said you seen Spiderman, so I'm guessing you're uptodate on the MCU?

John A

Christopher Reeve is Superman and always will be. Gene Hackman also best Lex Luthor. Regarding the glass and his Clark Kent persona, would cause people to not really look at closely at him. While Superman and his confidence would draw eye attention. or just say it is a comic book movie lol. a great one at that.

fastecp1

You need to watch Superman II.

About people seeing Superman: When "Man of Steel" came out, Henry Cavill wore a Superman t-shirt and stood under the "Man of Steel" billboard in Times Square with the name "Henry Cavill" in giant letters, and no-one recognized him as Henry Cavill. They just saw an anonymous guy in a Superman t-shirt.

Now that you have seen this, you have the background foundation to watch "Megamind" (2010) and "Brightburn" (2019). They may answer some of your speculative questions.

The "Supergirl" TV series from WB is connected to the "Arrow" & "Flash" WB shows. Helen Slater, the actress who played Kara El/Kara Danvers in the "Supergirl" movie, as well as Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher from "Lois & Clark" all play recurring characters or special guest star roles in the show.

The qualities of Superman was inspired by the "Barsoom" series of books by Edger Rice Burroughs from the early 1910's (first book published in 1912). It finally was made into a movie in 2012 as "John Carter". If you watch it, you will definitely see where the ideas for Superman came from.
