SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE (1978) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

Superman: The Movie (also marketed as Superman) is a 1978 superhero film based on DC Comics featuring the eponymous character, played by Christopher Reeve. It is the first of four installments in the Superman film series starring Reeve as Superman. The film was directed by Richard Donner based on a screenplay by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman, and Robert Benton. The film features an ensemble cast including Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El (Brando), and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Kidder) while battling the villainous Lex Luthor (Hackman). Amazing outfit! Those glasses look way better on you than on Clark.

Christopher Ferrarelli

This came out at the right time for a then 8-year old kid who was into science fiction with Star Trek on TV and Star Wars in the Movies. It was also the first time I saw an actor who had the same first name as mine in a lead role; and as the Man of Steel. Christopher Reeve was (and is) the definitive Superman for generations. I can’t wait to see it on YT later tonight.

I can’t wait to see this! Just don’t think too deeply on the ending.

Coby, is this the first Superman (Christopher Reeve) you seen? beside Lois and Clark (Dean Cain) which you mentioned.

John A

Coby, did you recognize John Ratzenberger as the controller following where the missiles were headed?

John A

Fun Fact Noel Neil, who played Lois Lane in "Adventures of Superman" 1952 TV show appeared in the movie on the train as it Clark Kent was running past it, and the little girl is supposed to be Lois Lane and Noel Neil Lois mother.

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird!, It's a plane! it's Superman is actually from the 1952 tv show starring George Reeves )no relationship to Christopher) "Adventures of Superman"

Mark Knight

Hey Coby. Did you know Christopher Reeve’s trainer who helped get him in shape for the part was none other than David Prowse, Darth Vader himself!

Mark Knight

I hope you’ll be doing Superman II as well. Looking forward to the next Fawlty Towers episode also.

Christopher Reeve starred in "Somewhere in Time," the most romantic movie. Highly recommend but might not work for channel audience

Metropolis is often seen as more of a Chicago analog than New York. Remember, Clark grew up in Kansas, so Chicago is a natural big city destination. The DC Comics New York is Gotham City, which we know as the home of Batman. (Of course, this version was shot in NY and the Statue of Liberty bit is funny.)

Mark Knight

Opps🤣I see why it confused you Doug. Autocorrect changed Christopher Reeve to Christopher Lee (Fixed). For some reason Autocorrect doesn’t like me. I’m also a little dyslexic, and often have to re-edit my posts.

Loved your reaction to the original Superman movie! I love the glasses too, pretty clever. 😁👍 Superman 2 and 3 are worth watching in my opinion too. Lex Luthor is in 2 but not 3. But 3 is very good too. Very intriguing! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Andy Harris

Christoper Reeve is excellent in "The Remains Of The Day". Great scenes with Anthony Hopkins and is a must watch. Reeve remains THE iconic Superman. The scene when his body posture changes and he turns from Clark to Superman is a marvellous piece of physical acting.

I just heard a little about the new Superman movie. There’s something about that movie that I think you’re gonna especially like. I don’t want to spoil it so I won’t say what it is. When you see it you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. After you see it please let me know if I was right. 😁

When this came out, the producers of "Superman" and "Superman II" (not Donner) were involved in a lawsuit over their production of "The Three Musketeers" (1973) and "The Four Musketeers" (1974). They had filmed them as one long movie, then in post-production told the actors that it was too long and split it into too parts, but insisted that they would only pay the SAG union rate for a single film. Their big mistake was that they had cast Charlton Heston as Cardinal Richelieu. He was the President of SAG at the time and brought the full weight of SAG's bankroll to fund a lawsuit, and got the other unions (writers, etc.) to join. The suit was still in court in 1978 when the producers did the same thing for Super 1 & 2: filming it as one movie, then telling the actors that it was too long and they were going to split it into 2 parts, but only pay the single movie rate. When this was presented to the judge, he called it a "Pattern and Practice" and summarily ruled in favor of SAG, so they had to pay everyone for 2 movies, plus pay for SAG's legal team, plus pay for 2 "Superman" movies.
