FAWLTY TOWERS S1E3 "The Wedding Party" - Full Watch Along

Fawlty Towers - Season 1, Episode 3: "The Wedding Party" Fawlty Towers is a British television sitcom written by John Cleese and Connie Booth, originally broadcast on BBC Two in 1975 and 1979. Two series of six episodes each were made. The series is set in Fawlty Towers, a dysfunctional fictional hotel in the English seaside town of Torquay in Devon. The plots centre on the tense, rude and put-upon owner Basil Fawlty (Cleese), his bossy wife Sybil (Prunella Scales), the sensible chambermaid Polly (Booth), and the hapless and English-challenged Spanish waiter Manuel (Andrew Sachs). They show their attempts to run the hotel amidst farcical situations and an array of demanding and eccentric guests and tradespeople.

I really like Fawlty Towers, I had only seen a couple of episodes before you started the reactions. I’m curious, what’s your favorite sitcom?

Love Seinfeld, I’ve been meaning to check out Arrested Development, may have to do a binge watch.

"OH, WHAT A TERRIBLE DREAM!" Yes, Basil is horrible and yet you will find yourself rooting for him like the rest of us in spite of that. Prunella Scales couldn't think how Sybil and Basil could ever have got together so she figured she should play her as less posh than Basil to try and explain why she might have fallen for him. They got the idea for the show from a real place/couple, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleneagles_Hotel,_Torquay. The Pythons were staying there and all but John and Connie took off. They thought his rudeness was hilarious and got the idea for the show. At one point, Terry Gilliam was cutting his meat in an American-style and the owner came up and said something like, "I'm sorry, but we don't eat like that". I was in a tiny bed like they had in Fawlty Towers in a place I stayed on a trip to Bath: I'm not much shorter than him so looked about as goofy.

Coby, definitely one of the best episodes but there are more great ones to come! Prunella Scales who plays Sybil is an extraordinary actress and has played in some great films that you may react to one day. She is a very healthy looking 93 years old and her husband of 60 years just passed away last year. By the way, the character of Basil Fawlty is based on a real man named Donald Sinclair. John Cleese and the rest of the Monty Python crew were filming on location in the Torquay, Devon area and stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel which Sinclair owned. John Cleese described him as "the rudest man I have ever come across in my life"! The Gleneagles Hotel was demolished in 2015 and a new retirement facility built in its place and was named Sachs Lodge in memory of Andrew Sachs who played Manuel and who passed away in 2016. The funny thing about this episode and a couple more to come is the sexual innuendo, what the British call "cheeky behavior" has permeated British television since the 1950s up until today but they have had and still have some of the most sexual repressive laws in the Western World!!

I don't know about in the UK, but in the US once upon a time, TV shows would always have married couples sleeping in separate beds, because showing them sharing a bed was apparently considered too risque. For example, "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" had their couples in separate beds. One of the first shows to finally have a couple in the same bed was "The Brady Bunch". "Fawlty Towers" would have aired shortly after "The Brady Bunch", so it presumably was still fairly common.
