ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

Escape from New York is a 1981 American independent science fiction action film co-written, co-scored and directed by John Carpenter, and starring Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau and Harry Dean Stanton. The film, set in the near-future world of 1997, concerns a crime-ridden United States, which has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into the country's sole maximum security prison. Air Force One is hijacked by anti-government insurgents who deliberately crash it into the walled borough. Former Special Forces and current federal prisoner Snake Plissken (Russell) is given just 24 hours to go in and rescue the President of the United States, after which, if successful, he will be pardoned. I am sorry dear that you had such a problem getting it ready. I appreciate you doing this for us, your fans! 😀

Watched it last night. Well part of it. I never laughed so hard when I heard you say sewer ewoks haha. I'm going to have to watch this again because one you said that I couldn't focus on the rest of the reaction. I don't know why I found that so funny but I did. Never in a million years would I think of that combo of words, but once you said it I was like holy crap she's right ! Went to bed laughing about it. Thanks Coby, you're the best!!!

Thank you for another incredible reaction Coby....... honestly, I think you could upload a video of you watching paint dry and you'd still find a way to make it entertaining..... you are a legend. We all love you xxx ♥️

Loved your reaction show tonight. You always bring a unique perspective! 🙂😘

9 pm works well for me because I get on the treadmill for that hour with you to ensure my blood sugar is low in the morning. But ultimately, it is your decision to make 🙂

Really, any time is fine in my opinion. I work until 4 most days (AZ time), but after that is usually good. I don't want anyone to have to stay up until midnight though.

Thanks for the reaction. Also Cabbie gave “Neverending story” his hat for the cassette tape, that’s how he got it.

Darren Harrison

You asked who Season Hubley was in the credits. She was married to Kurt Russell at the time!

Michael Buhl

The premise for the movie is pretty absurd, but because the city of New York had been on the verge of bankruptcy in the 1970s and the crime rate was very high, the conditions of the city inspired a lot of movie premises involving dark and dystopian visions of New York. The Warriors (1979) and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) are another couple of movies that spring to mind.

Mark Knight

Thanks for this one Coby. I love this movie, and as always Harry was awesome. I agree with you about the president role. Donald Pleasance is a great actor, but I always thought he was badly miscast here. Cabby was played by Ernest Borgnine, he was in the Poseidon Adventure, so that’s probably where you know him from. Have you seen Big Trouble in Little China? It’s another Carpenter film with Kurt Russell, I feel like you would like it.

Jason Jeter

Jamie Lee Curtis narrates the movie, as well as the speaker voice. James Cameron worked on this, as special visual effects. This was before he went to Italy to direct Piranha II.

Max du Coudray

Great choice. Not enough people react to this entry in the Carpenter/Russell trio. The Thing rightly gets the most attention, but most reactors move on to Big Trouble in Little China next, which I think is a mistake. I love Big Trouble, but it's a movie for fans of martial arts movies and is best when you've rewatched it over and over. Escape from New York is much more watchable for most people as a first-time experience.

I’m watching your reaction now… one of the actors you recognized was Earnest Borgnine, the cab driver. You saw him in “The Poseidon Adventure.” Earnest Borgnine is also famous for the movie “Marty” and the TV show “McHales Navy”

Larrys1254

The girl you asked about is Adriene Barbue. She was in a ton of movies and TV shows, including “Argo”, “The Mist”, and the TV show “Maude” (as Maude’s daughter).

Mechanize

Love this movie! And “Escape from L.A.” is such a cheesy guilty pleasure for me. 😂😂

Kevin Townsend

Good Movie. Of course, when they needed dirty, filthy, dystopian streets and buildings they came here to St. Louis to film.
