THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971) - Full Watch Along

The French Connection is a 1971 American neo-noir action thriller film directed by William Friedkin and starring Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, and Fernando Rey. The screenplay, by Ernest Tidyman, is based on Robin Moore's 1969 book of the same name about narcotics detectives Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso. It tells the story of their fictional counterparts, New York Police Department detectives Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and Buddy "Cloudy" Russo, in pursuit of wealthy French heroin smuggler Alain Charnier (played by Rey).

Thanks for doing this one Coby. This is one of my favorites. I love a good 70s crime thriller. That car chase am I right? I’m obviously looking forward Sudden Impact too. I hope you have a great day.

Will I watch this first thing at 7am on a Tuesday? ...Oui! (possibly second best car chase on film ever imo)

My first "brutal" film experience as a kid, I think. Car chase still stands up. My favorite French film is "Betty Blue" and STILL the best 70's/New York film for my money is Spike Lee's masterpiece, "SUMMER OF SAM".

This film won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Gene Hackman, and Best Director for William Friedkin. It was a groundbreaking movie and is considered historically significant. And yes it was based on a true story.

Gene Hackman's fashion is called a "Pork Pie hat" Yes, this is based on real events. "Popeye" Doyle was a real NYPD detective. The rest of the story is in "The French Connection II" (1975)

More for your French watch list: "The Day of the Jackal" (1973) "The Three Musketeers" (1973 version) + "The Four Musketeers" (1974) - part 2, not a sequel "The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002) "The Pink Panther" (1963 original version) + "A Shot in the Dark" (1964) "The Three Musketeers" (1993 version) "The Man In The Iron mask" (1998 version)

It was based on a true story the detectives names were changed. The real life narcotics detectives were Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, and the real life smuggler real name is Jean Jehan. He did get away in real life. Great movie won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor Gene Hackman. "Did you ever pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?"

This was fun. The French Connection features one of the greatest chase scenes in movie history, made even more thrilling because the sequence was shot illegally without proper permits. The NYPD's tactical force and off-duty cops offered to help control traffic, many of them involved in the actual case.
