You have to remember this is the first series in the new Who without RTD, Moffett or Murray Gold, and I think you're struggling adjusting essentially to the first time without any/all of those three. I think it would have helped if you had a bigger break from Capaldi to this, but personally I liked a tonne about this era and I'm sure you will too! It's only episode two of a completely new era!

Our new composer for this era is Segun Akinola. This is my first proper rewatch of this season since it aired, and I'm already warming to his vibes alot more already, but imo the absence of Murray Gold is the single biggest change to the show in the modern era. His soundtracks carried so much of the tone of NuWho, like, Rekkai is right, 13 does give 11 vibes, but her technobabble expo dumps also feel very 10 to me and I just expect those to have big dramatic scores underlining them! Without them, it feels sort of empty. I do quite like the 13th Doctor's theme, so I am excited to find another piece by Segun that I like just as much! I'm simply hard pressed to find other composers in movies or TV that I adore as much as Murray. I'm not sure how strongly you guys feel about it, but maybe noticing the change will help you adjust to the new tone? After all, he was our only permanent connecting piece all the way through from S1 with Eccleston, to Capaldi's S10.

This is my first time rewatching Chib Who after finally watching Torchwood, and this man is actually 3 souls in one body I swear. I know TW even had the Murray Gold soundtrack to keep things familiar, but it's def Chibnall having six diff visions for the show in seven different tones, not the funky tunes. Have you watched TW? How would you compare the Jodie era, to a story like Adrift or Countrycide or Day One, if you have?? I def wish I had been around on the online fandom to hear these sorts of discussions when this era debuted!

I started watching Who episodes as they were broadcast with this season. I had binged NuWho in prep and really liked it, but I loved this season from the start. I think at first it’s just what it looks like — I just love it. And the organic TARDIS, I love it, too. I think this episode is mostly about how this era is not about one character being the big savior: it’s about how we need each other, it’s about family—blood family and chosen family. This ep is about navigating how some of us talk about this stuff a lot, and some of us don’t talk about it enough. The ep is all about exploring character. It is a really different feel — it feels to me more like how people I know IRL try to get to know one another and share, and don’t share. When we get to know one another, it’s a long, slow process. RTD and Moffatt often feels cartoony to me. Chibnall’s characters remind me of people I know. I love lots of Murray Gold’s music (though not nearly as much in the RTD2 era), but I also really love Segun Akinola’s music, especially as it develops and changes over the episodes and seasons.

In Classic Who, there were several times when the Doctor had three companions traveling with him. The First Doctor and Second Doctor always had two and sometimes three companions. It was the Third and the Fourth who usually just had a single female companion. Then suddenly there were three new companions with nothing in common who began the Fifth Doctors’ era. This season always reminds me of that ‘crowded TARDIS’ era . Often character development seems kind of stuck because there isn’t enough time to focus on everyone.
