Rosa Parks and her story is quite well known in the UK. My daughter was taught about her in junior school. It's seen as part of the western human right's hourney

This episode is a slippery slope that lead myself and a lot of other people to the path of not being a fan of Chibber Me Timbers view of the show but not for the reasons some other might think of, those are cosmetic issues that I and others can look past. The one thing we can’t look past is taking Graham and making him the passenger that Rosa needed to give her seat up for, especially as 13 and the fam move forward. You took the one character whose entire story in his introduction is how much he loves his wife and sees her for the kind, loving, beautiful and unique woman who came in to his life and helped him move forward with his life. To take Graham and put him in the position that they did is absolute bullshit and rather than learn from it, Chiba doubled down and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is absolutely, unequivocally, without a doubt completely unworthy of being a writer on the show, let alone the show runner. When people say they don’t like this era of Doctor Who a majority of us will tell you that it’s not Jodie we have a problem with, our problem stems from the fact that the BBC took the mouth breathing, sycophantic, creatively bankrupt, dumb af, oxygen thieving, unoriginal piece of absolute garbage writer, responsible for LITERALLY the worst rated episodes in NuWho and made him showrunner. Taking the man responsible for the pure and unadulterated dumpster fires that were 42, The Hungry Earth, Cold Blood and The Power of Three and laying the creative future of the show at his feet is absolutely one of the absolute asinine, stupid and worst decisions The BBC had ever made outside of how they handled Christopher Eccleston leaving and how they screwed him over. Chris Chibnall is absolutely the worst writer in the entire history of Doctor Who’s existence and he 100% deserve all the hate that gets thrown his way. TLDR? Chris Chibnall is stupid af and has no business writing commercials for a local pharmacy, let alone be in charge of one of the most popular, long lasting shows in the history of TV. If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a thousand times: FUCK CHRIS CHIBNALL!

I really didn't take it that way about Gram. I felt he just didn't want to be a part of seeing what happens to Rose. The bus driver moved the seat marker to make sure there was room for his other regular white customers to get on. The Dr. just told Gram he couldn't leave bc they all couldn't leave to make sure there was enough white people. Off course there are stretches to it all, after all it's DR WHO! I've watched all episodes many times, if you love Dr Who you need to go with the flow.🤔😉🤗

That's a really cruel and horrible thing to say. No Doctor Who writer or showunner is absolutely perfect, and from his other shows and recent novel, Chris has shown that he’s an absolutely brilliant writer. No wonder writers struggle with confidence and insecurity when they have to put up with hate like this. There was also BTS issues which meant Chris didn’t always have the time to look back and do multiple redrafts of his scripts because of how gruelling and demanding the TV industry is. Writers work at different paces, and sometimes their creativity and talent suffers as a result.

Thomas York

Show me on the doll where my opinion hurt your feelings? The episodes that Chibs wrote before he was even showrunner are among the worst reviewed and received. Congratulations that you like his writing, I don’t and I won’t. “BTS” issues or not the man took the longest running sci-fi series that was already limping along and put one between its eyes. It wasn’t a failure because of Jodie or the companions it was a failure because BBC saw the numbers Broadchurch did, disregarded the work he put in on Doctor Who before then, gave him the keys to the shop with no supervision, with which he started a bonfire in the living room and the BBC only noticed after the structure had burned down to just the shell. His tenure was so bad that they had to beg Russell, David and Murray to come back and try to save it. “Busy” okay, Moffat was running Sherlock and Who at the same time which entailed putting out more episodes and fully fleshed out characters. Broadchurch succeeded because he had Jane Featherstone reeling him in. It’s not a coincidence that when the American remake of Broadchurch happened, Chris was without Jane or anyone else giving him oversight and it flopped massively. That argument also doesn’t account that his series had less episodes and longer breaks between seasons. Flux only had six episodes and by then, the damage had been done. I’m glad there are people out there who like his writing. I’m not one of them and judging by the audience drop off during his tenure I’m not the only one. Drum up whatever excuses you want but the data and his work speaks for itself.

Really interesting hearing your discussion on this, enjoyed the episode at the time, like you say a big swing to take this topic on esp so early in a new era! But I thought it was quite good (bar how easy the villain was dispatched for one) but yeah enjoyed your post show chat about all the nuances , very informative! Thanks!

Martin

Seconded! If you start judging a whole era or show on an episode or one thing here or there then may as stop lol Dr Who ranges so far and wide and the great thing is if there is one particular thing you don't like, you can just move on to the next one! Fellow watched all the episodes many times person lol I agree, with this show you gotta take the show as it goes!

Thomas York

Yeah, uhhhh, except that’s not what I did. I didn’t cherry pick one or two things. EVERYTHING Chris Chibnall did, starting all the way back in season 3 with “42” all the way through his 3 seasons as showrunner, were bad. The two worst reviewed/received episodes of the series are The Timeless Children and Orphan 55 where Chris was showrunner. 7 of the 10 worst reviewed/received episodes of all time were Chris Chibnall was showrunner. Doctor Who TV Poll has 12 of The 20 Worst Episodes of Doctor Who by Showrunner and Doctor are attributed to Chris Chibnalls tenure as Showrunner. Of the remaining 8 of 20 Worst, Russell has 3 with one of them being written by Chris Chibnall in 42. Similarly, of Moffat’s 5 in The Worst, 2 were written by Chris Chibnall. Not only did Chibnall episodes come in rating lower than any other Showrunner by fans and critics, he also saw the largest decline in overnight viewing numbers and long term views in general by millions. Do you know what happened the last time Doctor Who audiences opted to just, “go with the flow” and told others to just be happy it’s still on the air? It got cancelled. Pulled of the air entirely. For over 15 years. So, as content as you and others are just watching those numbers go down or default to the, “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it” method of dealing with the criticism, if you want the show to remain on the air for another sixty years, you should probably be a bit more concerned by the literal data and metrics that determines what remains on the air and doesn’t as opposed to just finding contentment in a drastically shrinking echo chamber in the comment sections of “fan” forums. Anecdotal, “But I and my friends still like it!” are irrelevant to the studios and producers who keep your favorite shows on the air. Refusing to acknowledge that actual, hardline and factual data says differently then what you or your friends think will do very little to keep the show on the air by attempting to blame everybody and anybody else, other than the people who make the show.

As much as I agree on your general distaste towards this era, we’re all here to watch these two dudes experience it for the first time at a different pace and context than we did. Those are perspective changes that can massively affect your opinions on the programming. I also despise the TC arc and don’t rate Orphan 55 as an episode, but Chris Chibnall also wrote some of the best episodes of Torchwood. So he CAN write Whoniverse. I agree that Moffat had it pretty bad showrunning both Who and Sherlock at the same time, and yet also wrote some of the best Who, but it’s still true that maybe Chibnall could’ve done better under less stressful circumstances of his own. We can yap all day about the crap parts of this era (which, as much as it’s my least fav of NuWho, there is good and bad in EVERY season). Or, we can chime in every now and again with responses to Syntell/Rekkai’s actual questions and still try and let them form their own opinions. I respect if you disengage from the channel completely for this era or onwards, but just leaving hateful comments without any room for recognition of the good really doesn’t help. You’re trying to give them an opinion before they can have time to form one. I’m here to rewatch with them and see if my thoughts change, I’d encourage others to do the same, but do what you like. Let’s just try and have fun?

The dynamic duo are going to make their own minds up regardless of what appears on here. The secondary function of this forum is for us to discuss with each other the current story's or era. And I think that is what most people use it for. Very few of my previous posts were addressed to s&r. It was to see the consensus of other fans. Series 11 is probably the best of this run. Nothing really bad but nothing particularly good either. A series of 6's.

See, what’s crazy is I paid money to be here as such I’m entitled to comment on things and be critical. I have been a lifelong fan of Doctor Who. I grew up in the 90’s in The US and only had reruns to watch. Aside from The Movie there was nothing else. When the show came back I was reserved but I watched. When it was great, I’d say it was great. When it was dumb, I’d say it was dumb. You and they are entitled to watch and enjoy without spoilers hence me posting nothing but my opinion on Chris and the viewing figures, critics and audience scores from his era compared to what came before. The idea that my hyperbolic and sarcastic criticism of someone I believe to have done more damage than good, is somehow invalid and means I should keep my opinions to myself and keep criticism out of the conversation with an, “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all” mentality, is asinine. Insinuating that simply because the show exists in one form or another and therefore criticism has no business in the discourse, is how beloved and popular things end up getting budgets slashed, shows cancelled and losing writers, directors, production crews and actors jobs. As for Chibnalls writing in Torchwood, I’ll remind you that he reported directly to RTD as he was the Executive Producer. He had his name and his money on the line and aside from “Countrycide” and “End of Days” he hardly gets a pass. His top two stories on Torchwood where the viewing numbers are at their most engaging are about a sex addicted alien in “Day One” and half naked woman in a cyber bikini in “Cyberwomen”. But, those episodes aside it’s important to not that even there he had someone he was reporting to that kept him in check. I’m not sure when the idea that criticism can’t be tolerated or the idea that the only valid opinions are positive ones, permeated pop culture and fandom but it’s not a mindset I subscribe to. In the same way that you say the show ebbs and flows and may not be for me isn’t up to anyone but myself. If you’re allowed to engage in the conversation because you enjoy it, I’m entitled to be a part of the conversation when I don’t. I’ll engage where I like and when I like and you and anybody else are free to ignore me and not engage or call me stupid. That’s how discourse works you’re entitled to your opinion, you aren’t entitled to mine. If you or anyone else wants to be the arbiter of what can or can’t be discussed, decide the opinions that should be kept to oneself or who should just sit and be quiet than buy me or anyone else who disagrees with you, out of their membership and build your echo chamber. But until you do that, nobody has the right to tell someone to keep their opinions to themselves and just let other people enjoy things with no pushback. That is not how the world works now or ever.

Lmao, replying to a comment then turning around and blocking someone so they can’t reply in an attempt to feel like Billy Badass is wild when know Patreon sends an email with your name, picture and full transcript of your reply. Crazy work, yall.

In terms of atmosphere with our characters being surrounded by racism, Yaz and Ryan facing the full force of it, and each companion having a role to fulfil in keeping history on track, the episode did those aspects well. I even liked Ryan's shock in meeting MLK and reassuring Rosa. But for the other issues that Rekai mentioned such as the ending, missing info & the fact it took so long to get a black woman as a writer? Fully agree on those problems with the episode. I also think Krasko was defeated in such an underwhelming way. There wasn't enough build up with the device that Ryan saw The Doctor use. I feel like that needed a bit more elaboration with Ryan observing how it works. I liked the cat and mouse game aspect they had with him though. Better than the last episode and the attempt was admirable. But there are certain aspects of the episode that didn't quite land as well as they could have. Graham's reaction to being a part of events is genuinely sad though. Them being part of an events was a decent book end idea. But I think it needed better execution with some of the stuff in the middle act and the ending.

What an awful person you are. Get a life instead of just being rude. Like you wouldn't say fuck Chris Chibnall to his face but do it in your bedroom on a computer. Have some respect even if you don't like his era.
