The point you bring up halfway through about this being a book you would've loved when you first started reading comics is exactly how I feel. This book *is* the reason comic books finally clicked for me, after over a decade of trying to get into the medium ever since I was a kid. I absolutely think the strong art style helped, but it being very Cass and Steph forward, given their lack of appearances in otherwise more "mainstream" DC media, really exposed me for the first time to the wider setting of Gotham rather than just the same OG Bat-family story ad nauseum. I've absolutely come to look at the book as... kinda mediocre overall. But it 100% was a perfect gateway as an early Gen Z person trying to get into the wider DC universe and comics in general.

And like I said to Dylan, I'm super glad that it was able to be a good gateway for you! Even though I'm a much more seasoned reader now, I want to try and make sure that I am keeping in mind the value of books like this for folks coming into the hobby and I hope that was made clear in the video. The last thing I want to do is trash on the book. Do you have any suggestions to add for the June poll?

Shoot I meant to comment for the Batgirls video and time got away from me! I resonate with your takes, the art really carries this book, and boy is it gorgeous; I loved how Cass's cape was pointy and jagged, while Steph's was flowing and rounded, like their personalities. But the story is mid. I did keep reading after this volume, but Jorge Corona stops doing interiors and only does covers after this, so the book basically loses its charm; also, the Seer stuff doesn't pay off at all. There was basically no point for this story imo. Batgirls was my first introduction to every single character in it, I had no familiarity with any of the Bat family except Batman, but even with the subpar writing I absolutely adored Steph, which is why I read the next few issues. I might check out the ongoing Titans book now that Steph is on the team!

I also agree with your perspective that new comic fans would probably like indie stuff more than Marvel / DC. There's so much more to comics than superheroes!! Indie comics are where it's at. For the book club after Octo-Girl, I suggest the 5 issue Assorted Crisis Events vol 1 TPB, the ongoing series by Deniz Camp who is kinda in the zeitgeist right now, colored by Jordie Bellaire who is also amazing.

Comic Drake

It's going to be one suggestion per-person and I usually go with the first on a list. I'm happy to throw Sex Criminals on there, but I want to confirm if that's what you want since I've already covered the book on the channel.

TheGamingBadger

You absolutely made your point well. I've always thought it's important to have those "entry-level" reads for people that you can point to and say "Hey try this." As for the June poll, I'm gonna throw a super random wildcard in here simply because I picked up a bunch of issues recently, and that's the 1993 Batman Knightfall event. It's almost certainly WAY outside the scope of a monthly book club, but if anything I'd love to hear your thoughts on big crossover events, and whether or not they help or hinder people's ability to get further into comics.

del the funky witch

ahh ty for both of those clarifications! I edited my post, I'll suggest Assorted Crisis Events vol 1 (unless you've also covered this! I'm a newer subscriber to your channel)

I liked Batgirls it was a fun read!

Now for Octo Girl, I have so much to say but I'll try to keep it short. This book single handily got me back into comics, it's just such a fun read and I love Otoha. Before octo girl, the only comic I had read was og superior but after reading everything, I have read practically the entirety of asm along with keeping up with modern stuff. This book also got me to start drawing because the book incredibly niche and I want more people to read it lol. All in all a fantastic read with great references to past comics and such love for doc ock in general. Now I would suggest vol 2 but I understand you wanna do other books first before continuing so i will throw out Cody Ziglar's miles morales (if you haven't read it already)

Comic Drake

I have not! I have heard nothing but great things about ACE. 😊

Comic Drake

Oof yeah. Knightfall might be a bit much for folks to read up on for book club, but I can see if there's a smaller part of the arc that would work!

I agreed with a lot of your takes on Batgirls. Too try hard. I had a few Cass Batgirl comics at the turn of the millenium and also read the Steph Batgirl. The new 52 did them both so dirty. I prefer them as young adults as opposed to like 15 year olds in Batgirls. Also I havent finished Octo Girl yet but my suggestion for after it is Judge Dredd: America, its pretty much universally considered the best introduction to Judge Dredd.

Iain Pryde

Octo Girl was a fairly by the numbers manga adaptation crossed with superior spider-man. It didn't do much for me, but I don't think I'm the demographic. I prefer stuff like Akira, Ghost in the Shell or Dragon Ball.

Dylan

Sometimes I claim that a video premise is written for me, but that's never been so accurate! Haha, I agree that these are dialed up versions of the characters more fitting for newbies. My pallete is already expanding with their individual runs. Its silliness made this an accesible entry point when my preconceived bias of Batman was male angst, to be overly simplistic. Another point in favor of the art style for me personally was in learning the visual vocabulary of comics. Literally where to look on the page. Because it was so nice to look at, I kept turning pages. I imagine this will be a series I collect to look at, and other series I collect to read. Last point: sometimes the best book club sessions come when you dislike the book. That's kind of the whole point of the thing!

Ryan Haines

New to the club. Would love to read something bat family centric! What about Batman & Robin Eternal for June?

Comic Drake

Hey Ryan, I'm so sorry that your comment never hit my inbox. I absolutely should have had Batman & Robin Eternal on the vote for June. I'll try to be sure to have it there for July!
