Its interesting reading it as someone who has watched both the main anime and 90s ova, and read parts of the manga because the vibe is very different between them. The main anime leans very heavily into araki's action/adventure inspiration while downplaying his heavy horror inspiration, while the ova emphasizes that horror inspiration a lot more. as soon as you get into the manga, it almost jumpscares you with a scene that isn't in the main anime, and if you watched that first its surprising to see the horror inspiration front and center. However, the ova emphasizes that scene that wasn't in the main anime by having it as part of the intro seqence to each episode.
