Because no requests were left in the last Book Club for the August poll, we're just going to move onto the second place winner to be covered, The Mask #0-4 by John Arcudi from Dark Horse.

Additionally, there has only been one comment left for July episode, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood. If you would like to be featured in that video, you still have time to leave a comment for it here. I am also accepting comments to be featured in The Mask episode for August.

Sorry I'm new here. What does being featured mean?

Comic Drake

Folks that leave comments about their thoughts on the book that is voted on for the book club get featured in that episode of the show.

I haven't finished JJBA: Phantom Blood yet and I usually like to post selection for the poll there when I'm done. That being said I'm more than happy for The Mask to be the next pick.

Comic Drake

It's all good. Timing is a bit off because of how much longer the Knightfall episode took to create. Luckily, there's still plenty of time until JoJo gets recorded.

Wait so if anyone had left a comment with there request it automatically would have become the next thing covered? Man I missed an easy chance for my last request or any request then.

The main I find interesting about Phantom Blood is how different it is from what comes later looking back now with Araki’s writing and art style changing over time. Also Dio since he maybe the most iconic character from the series with the most lasting impact even when he’s not around but saying more might spoil things for new Jojo fans.

Haha, yup! It would have been victory be default.

Damn should have commented civil war 2! Next time we should do Exquisite Corpses is my serious suggestion.

I think the art for JJBA part 1 is really noteworthy especially so long after the part has come out. Much like the writing, the art was an impression of older manga at the time, and it was substantially different looking from it's contemporaries. Now that Phantom Blood itself is quite old, I think that's noteworthy, though I don't have any conclusions on that thought

phew ok so i read the first volume of phantom blood — i’d never read any jojo’s and didn’t know anything about it — and i think dio might be the character in all of fiction i hate the most. he’s such a prick! his motivations are like one step removed from just being evil because he wants to, and the two major bad things he does in this volume are absolutely despicable. i’m not going to read any more jojo’s because i hate him so much and i read that he doesn’t go away. the art, though, is PHENOMENAL! the first chapter with color is so pretty, and the chapters with the use of orange…it’s really incredible how much the artist does with just different values of black and orange. the art almost made me want to keep reading, it was that good!! the way motion and emotion are depicted, and the exaggerated forms, it’s all so unique and gorgeous. overall, this volume hit the same way that a lot of manga hits for me, which is that the characters are just too divorced from the way humans actually act for me to enjoy it. the way characters speak in jojo’s just isn’t normal human dialogue, they say things — and in particular ways — that are purely for plot and aren’t how humans speak. it’s kind of campy, but not quite? i’m not sure, this is my particular bugaboo with manga that keeps me from enjoying most of it. i do appreciate that there wasn’t a horny pervert character. in fact, another thing i really enjoyed about the book is that the cast is quite small and really only focuses on dio and jojo, which isn’t something i’ve seen a lot. also i know this message is really long, feel free to paraphrase or chop it up, just wanted to give my thoughts!!

I had no expectations of JoJo's BA, I'd never seen anything to do with it at all going in (I did seem to have associated Viewtiful Joe with it in my head somehow though). It's not for me, I warmed a little to it towards the end though. I'm not a fan of the art style (some really stand out splash pages though), a little too exaggerated. The stereotypical manga over the top characters making it basically like Dio = bad and JoJo = good gave character development all the depth of a paddling pool. I LOVED the weird manga-fied London scenes, what an absolutely bananas weird version of victorian London. I wouldn't continue reading any further volumes, for me it was just ok. My suggestion for the next poll: british comic classic - Rogue Trooper ("Rogue Trooper: The Complete Collection - Book 1" or if you want a shorter read "Essential Rogue Trooper: Genetic Infantryman", which has half of whats in the complete collection book 1)

totally agree on the cool version of london in the book. i liked the setting generally; i don’t read a lot of manga, and i’d never seen that time period depicted in a manga before, so it felt fresh to me.

i’d like to suggest the trade of Do a Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer, which collects the full 7 issue run. i’ve heard it described as like dragonball z meets pro wrestling which sounds pretty cool.

Just gonna drop my Mask comment here: SPOILERS HERE Doug mahnke is fantastic. Also the colour contrast mix of subdued and neon garish is brilliant. The zany tex avery with real world consequences violence is perfect and downright creepy at times. I love how the corrupting influence sneaks up and how you question how much influence the mask has. with stanley he's a bad, impotent, bitter person. But kellaway is trying to be a good guy. The true moments of horror in it are: the school room scene is powerful and absolutely sinister (the teacher reduced to pleading and the child brought to tears by it all) and when big head pretends to be a paramedic (and rips his face off in gruesome detail). The mix of ultraviolence and black humour is perfect. And is as good an opening salvo of a comic series as there could be. It is ultraviolence done right and it's a shame the movie had to water it down to just a live action cartoon (which i love but i prefer the comic way more). But I'd never have read the comic if the movie hadn't come out.
