New iPads, new action cameras, and this very good looking EV. Here are the things I watched, read, listened to, and thought about this week.

Please drop what you were tuned into down in the comments! (playlist trades highly encouraged).

tech-y stuff i cant stop thinking about:

Quest app lets you visualize your Wi-Fi signal

I once made a video about mapping my wifi signal and wowee this looks much cooler and far easier!

Action cam plateaued

As action cam season comes to a close I cant help but notice that that market has come to almost a full stop in regard to innovation. For years the updates have been small, but this year it felt like GoPro, Insta360, and DJI were all scraping the bottom of the barrel for any and all improvements to image quality. A large issue that keeps these devices from being able to improve is the waterproof housing they are built into. Having no airflow creates a real problem for heat dissipation. And a lot of heat is generated when 4k or 8k footage is being recorded. It's such a problem that I have heard rumblings of companies thinking about going back to external waterproof housing. But in my opinion, the year over year refresh cycle should be the first thing to change.

Creators being honest about not knowing everything

I saw this threads post and also got the below comment on one of my videos this week. And yes, this is the energy I love to see! When I started making videos for the internet seven years ago I felt pressure to know every last spec about every last gadget, to be a master at filming and editing. But as I grew more comfortable telling my stories and sharing my insight I learned that no one actually knows everything. And that using LUTs and shooting in auto is not only perfectly fine, its actually what a lot of others are doing too. So go forth not knowing everything! You can still be wildly successful.

things i watched:

Severance Season 2 Teaser

My partner, Hannah, and I loved season one of Severance. We went so far as to temporarily subscribe to Apple TV+ for it. So Han, get that subscription renewal ready!

Tim Cook on How Steve Jobs Recruited Him and More

I'm fascinated by people, so seeing Tim talk about himself rather than Apple is exactly the type of interview I want. My biggest takeaway from this interview was Tim saying that Steve Jobs taught him to not be so proud that he couldn't change his mind. And that the two of them often changed each other's minds about things.

Lebron's advice for his son

The last two months have a been full of intensity for me. All sorts of numbers in my life are moving faster than they ever have before. I have laid awake thinking about every last thing I may have done wrong and how everything could just crumble if I don't work harder. Advice like "just play carefree" feels really good to hear. Because I think it's true that we all shine brighter when we don't put the weight of the world on our shoulders.

This insanely good YouTube video from a creator I have never heard of

I don't know who Henry Kidman is, but holy hell he can make a great video. There are so many cool transitions, a very solid story, and loads of humor packed in this video about a camera slider. Plus I learned a thing or two! 11/10 would rec

things i listened to:

Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso: Tiny Desk Concert

I had not heard of Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso but now I'm locked in. Amazing rhythms/musicians + unreal sunglasses.

A walking playlist I made for our Patreon Bud Wouter (YT music, Spotify)

Yesterday while intro-ing themself, Wouter from the Netherlands mentioned they were looking for a hiking/walking playlist. So I devoted myself to the cause! It's a bit all over the place in terms of genre, and my transitions are rough, but now that I have been jamming to it for 24 hours... this hits. Trade me a playlist anyone?

Kara Swisher's Life in Seven Songs episode

Much like the Tim Cook interview above, there is nothing I love more than people talking about being people. And while news and Silicon Valley are topics I enjoy hearing Kara talk about, this interview shines a light on her personal story. Plus its only 30 minutes.

Ok, that's all for this week! Again, let me know what you have been seeing down in the comments.

appreciate you! -b

Hey Becca! That Severance Season 2 teaser has me hyped too! Can’t wait to dive back into that world. And wow, Henry Kidman’s video—what a find! I didn’t know him either, but the production quality is next-level. Totally blew me away. By the way, do you use any kind of "second brain" app to organize all the cool stuff you come across online? I’ve tried probably dozens of apps but still haven’t found one that really clicks for me. Would love to hear if you have any tips!

Mandy Salley

Florence & The Machine dropped a recording of their performance with a full orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall today, and I'm loving it! Florence's voice with a full orchestra is quite something.

Ricky C

That Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso Tiny Desk Convert was 🔥🔥🔥. That Scout looks awesome, but am worried about actually delivering below $60k.

Nir Sagiv

Love this one 💪 both the idea of cool things you’ve seen and the actual content

Becca Farsace

yeah im SO skeptical of that $60k price tag. Like there is no way...

Becca Farsace

I have possibly the worst system for organizing all of these things. Right now I just create a draft of the newsletter on Patreon on Monday, and as I see things I paste them in. Then if I am away from my laptop I save links in a google doc file. I know there has to be a better way, but it seems to working for now? As I write this out I am thinking maybe it would be best to draft to whole thing in a google doc... sigh. Growing pains! But very open to suggestions.

Toni Radtkey

My partner and I are so hyped for Severance. Literally screamed at the TV for a few minutes after the S1 cliffhanger 🥲😭😭😭😭

Hey Becca! This is a really exciting way of putting things what you loved over the week... How do you shoot your primary talking head footage in, Do you use LOG(I did a showreel for a friend on my S24 Ultra paired with the black magic camera app the results were surprisingly good) and for sound do you record using any 32-Bit float recorder (recently got the DJI mic 2 it's 😻 awesome and so easy to work with) Anyways welcom to patreon 🫂

David Imel

This is like Becca's version of Installer and I LOVE IT

Becca Farsace

Your set up sounds great! I currently shoot on a Nikon Z6 III with a 24-70mm lens for the talking head stuff. I have been using more N-LOG lately, but typically I will just shoot a flat color profile so that I can have some control over saturation in post and otherwise don't need to color it. I sometimes record 32-bit on the Rode GO II, but mostly I use a Rode NT-USB plugged right into my computer. For the broll stuff I have been using an iPhone 16 Pro or the Osmo Pocket 3.

Not knowing everything is the way to be. I’m a copywriter for a living and it’s not like I know aaaalllll the words. (And the words I do know are often weird and totally useless.) Viva la learning and curiosity. I’m not a playlist person buuuut Amyl & the Sniffers just dropped their latest album – Cartoon Darkness. They’re an Aussie punk band and quite possible the most Aussie band kicking around (except for maybe The Chats). Very good, very fun, very vulgar. 10/10.
