I haven't watched episode 8 so no spoilers, but there was a lot of cool speculation going on last week when this aired. My favorite and most plausible is that in the scene where Gin (the head courtesan) speaks with Toranaga, she's saying he DOES have a plan and she knows about it, and is extorting him for her secrecy. That's why he leaves her 2 acres of land or whatever later when he's writing his will. I mean, he's famous for trickery after all. There were other good theories too but I'll just wait til we watch Episode 8 since they may or may not be spoilers. Not sure how much it can spoil, given that this whole show is based on real historical figures, but apparently they've already deviated a little from the book that was loosely based on history, so.

The seppuku part isn't what gets me, I'm trying to understand, does she have to if they divorce? Toranaga made it sound easy as hell to divorce, and so I guess it comes down to the husband if he'll accept that. I don't know man, I guess I just hate her lack of agency yet puts the emotional weight of "kill me" on someone else. Like honestly, if she wanted to die that badly, I wouldn't wait on my husband permission...I'm doing it. Just, if she at least would try to say something like that to him, it would mean a lot. Yet the only thing she tells him is that she wants to die, which going through what she went through... valid. It just gives me the same feeling as a man beating your behind and yet you still crawl to him and care for him or something. It just gives me that feeling, like if you don't like it..leave. Toranaga would likely make sure she stays safe with whatever she chooses.

Still, I feel like I just need a scene where she tells him that's what she wants. It may be like she has no agency, but I feel based on the dialogue and such, that Toranaga would defend her, and the husband while upset, would take it as the best option. Cause he obviously not happy either. I just hope it gets wrapped up soon. Cause it's apparent that everybody knows, yet try to ignore as best they can when they low-key know they can't.

As an Asian male I gotta apologize for the brethren, some of them have gone down their own weird version of the redpill rabbit hole raging about the fetishization of Asian women and featuring them in interracial relationships. Her desire for suicide goes much deeper than depression, it is complete cultural indoctrination about the ritualistic nature of honor in death. This is not an uncommon thing that women across many cultures had to do as they had to face horrors every day in a society that allowed and encouraged such horrors.

I feel she wants to live personally. Cause though her life was not her own in the grand society of Japan, in Toranaga's company, it becomes apparent more and more that she has a choice. They're property, but I feel the show has given hints that of this current point in time, she has a choice. She just doesn't want to make it seemingly, but I'll be honest and say that may be in large part of her background and society. As for her family, that's just how she feels, even though Toranaga himself said that it's honoring him and others that she lives, so that's why I felt it went into depression. And depression can happen from a situation like hers, that kind of stuff gets amplified even. You can believe she's completely valid and I believe for the most part she is, but I'm not sure if she not reading the room, but she already dishonoring her husband and no one is going to give her death. So she really could use that to her advantage in what she does or say.

I think it also goes into that Toranaga doesn't care, because he got more pressing issues. And though she doesn't have agency or is seen as property, so were many black slaves and women before current era. I'm not expecting her to go that far, but you can't blame me for wanting agency for a character that I'm only frustrated at, because she keeps wanting to die and I personally don't like that mindset from her. Like, I'd prefer her to use that fearlessness of death to find honor in another way besides death, and seek her own happiness like her father would want. I guess I want to see her progress as a person by building herself up, and it went might go well with being the opposite of the kid shogun's mom.

I think that it's actually considered dishonorable for the head to roll around on the floor after, so they trained to cut precisely to leave a bit of skin and not cut all the way through so the head would remain attached. They never do that in movies because it would be a lot more of a gross and complex effect and it's also just more dramatic for a head to hit the floor after one sword strike. Personally, I think the warlord just really respected Toranaga and wanted to give him full respect for winning the battle, but he didn't think it through about a 12 year old not having the upper body strength for that.

I am actually enjoying Buntaro’s character the most recent episodes. Though he treats Mariko badly, but he is still a man from his time. I don’t think he is particularly worse than Yabishige or Toranaga. He probably himself can’t see the reason for Mariko’s aversion to him and attraction to Blackthorne, which just frustrates him all the more. This episode really showed some insight into his tragic character And I might be wrong about this, but I’m pretty sure Mariko hated the marriage to Buntaro because of his lower standing and that is the main reason for her dislike in the beginning.

Seppuku after the tokugawa shogunate took over actually became more getting your head chopped off rather than cutting your stomach. At some point, the person killing themselves could use something symbolic like a fan instead of a knife, and as soon as they twitched for it the second would cut their head off.

Also Blackthorne's speech about him tricking his vassels into following him to death, i think that was supposed to be ironic in the sense that that's the actual trick. For the enemy to believe a surrender, his people will have to sell it so they would have to believe it as well

The main reason why Mariko doesn't want to be with Buntaro is entirely based on the fact that Buntaro is from a lower class family. He's still samurai but it's like Royalty marrying a poor noble from the country side. While at the same time she be looking up this wild untamed sea barbarian and thinking "i want some of that." Also, that tea house owner might be on to something. It's not like Toranaga to leave such vulnerabilities while negotiating or playing game of thrones. The only times where his conventionally fool proof plans had left him vulnerable, Blackthorne had saved him. So, it's not like Toranaga isn't aware or anticipating fate to be at play here. Also, sometimes in order fool your enemies you have to fool your closest allies. I dunno, I might just be blowing smoke up everyone's ass. I just know this ain't over.

This could be true but I feel like "treating him like shit" part is a bit much. I feel it's more like she was cold to him given the situation. Keep in mind the marriage wasn't ideal for either of them. Both of them felt it as a punishment. She felt her father threw her away and later realized it was to protect her. He felt like he had a shameful wife whose father was a king slayer. I feel he just accepted her but never tried to understand. Now that Anji/John has warmed her some, his pride can't take it.

When people do Seppuku, it's normal for them to have "Kaishaku" who cut their heads so they don't have to suffer in pain. Also, Seppuku is an honor for samurai, so assisting was important so as not to make it look unsightly. Normally, in a lord's case, it was done by a vassal, and if it was a vassal, it was done by a relative or colleague. There were also cases in which a person who committed Seppuku asks a person they chose to do Kaishaku. Beheading someone is not an easy task, and if someone with inferior sword skills does the job, it will be a failure. So, in a lot of cases, those who are skilled with swords are chosen as Kaishaku.
