what a wild episode. Lumon been controlling things for a long time, seems like they were targeted?

Comments

halsa

I’m so ready for this reaction

Sharpeyz

Let’s gooo!

Jamie

So the black elevator area is just another department But the people there if they try to leave they just get severed and willingly go back

JennH

I’m not home right now😭 wanna watch

Sam

This episode made me remember that milchik knows everything. I like his character, but he have to step up to be forgiven.

Saeng

It’s time.

malfunct

yess, this one is a doozy. btw i don't think it was a filter; on the official podcast, they said they shot the flashback scenes on film!

PetersThimble

First time director btw! Jessica Lee Gagné made her directorial debut in this episode and with no CGI: All of those beautiful transitional shots were done manually! I really hope she directs more episodes in s3

Ray Ray

Yes, Lumon been on some next shit. Its like this is a different phase or trial of their experiment to test the threshold of being severed.....Burts husband slipped up at the table with Irving and said something about him being with Lumon 20 ago years then Burt tried to correct/silence his husband and then Irving mentions from his pov, that its only been going on for 12 years.... That pause and look Burt gave after Irv said that has stuck with me

LJ

Shows like this and Shogun make me appreciate the writers so much. The residuals on this better be MINT

I VisiBomb I
>>166603107

except shogun was written long before the show, since its a book. but yeah, both are brilliant.

Sam

20:41 - look who it's the doctor.

MrGuy3000

Free my dawg gemma she ain’t do nun 🔥🙏💯

Carlos

Peak cinematography. All the transition work was insane.

Divinerights

For what it thinks is Christmas at least

Ron H

aye man 20:42 that mother effin doctor

mason zeo

i think "ms casey" asked how long its been since last she knew she was being replaced/fired. I dont think she felt an innate gap of time more so that she was told she is never coming back

Guns

A darker part of me thinks that the doctor has a room where he takes advantage of Gemma in his way and that’s why he kept asking if she felt something special in one of the rooms

Cancel

I think with Ms. Casey asking about how long it's been also has to do with the fact that the last time they told her she had been fired, which effectively means she expected to never come back.

Russ

agreed on the shoutout to the director this one was wild. gemma is basically being tortured full time but severed into 30+ separate personalities? Now imagine *that* re-integration lol

Anon7524

This was just too hard to watch ngl. It's so fucking unsettling

Victor

Idk if you all remember but in Season 1 Petey said he discovered a department where the innies weren’t allowed to go home. So maybe there are other people like Gemma down there. And it kinda explains the map saying people live in lumon.

I VisiBomb I

so the theory is that lumon trying to make people never feel pain or suffering by refining the chips to turn on and off automatically and negate any pain or sadness in peoples lives, leaving them essentially happy forever. basically if they can sever someone, turn the switch on when they suffer a bad experience, and then kill the severed part of the person that had to go through that experience, you create a "Bondrewd from Made in Abyss" type of patent but instead of cartridges you actually manipulate the brain into erasing that from your memory. its INSANE.

AllanJ

This episode was phenomenal. From the reveal of Ms. Casey being Mark’s wife Gemma at the end of Season 1 Episode 7, and not really knowing much about her so far, nor having a strong connection to her like the other characters. Now we get to Season 2 Episode 7 where we see Gemma’s life with Mark in the past and her life in Lumon in the present, and in the timespan of 50 minutes within 1 episode they've made everyone so emotionally invested and attached to Gemma and her wellbeing. Dichen Lachman put on an acting Masterclass as Gemma. Also shout-out to Jessica Lee Gagné, the show’s cinematographer. She knocked it out of the park as the director.

John Cedar

So yeah it seems like Gemma is patient zero for pushing Severance on EVERYONE, as a daily part of human life, to sever away unwanted and traumatic experiences. Going to the dentist, flying on a plane, writing thank yous, etc. All things that almost everyone wants to avoid, and Lumon will offer the solution: split yourself into a tiny piece whose sole purpose is to experience that bad moment, and then you're done. Even sever yourself THOUSANDS of times over your life to block out all the pain. "Kier will take away all his pain, just as he has taken away yours."

T

Every room seems to represent an event or action someone would want to sever themselves for. E.g., card writing, riding in a plane, the dentist. etc. also the guy that’s in every room with Gemma, Dr Mauer( think that’s how you spell it) he was in the office when Mark and Gemma went there at 20:44.

Jadon

I wouldve decked that lady Doc and went right back up lol. Severed me wouldve gotten the idea after a few times. 😂

Danielle

They were definitely targeted from jump. Not just Gemma but Mark too although Gemma gets the worst of it. Lumon owns that fertility clinic and used it as a front to find their perfect candidate and they chose Gemma for whatever reason . I definitely believe they tampered with her IVF to put her in a vulnerable position to go to them or something. Then staged her death to kidnap her and simultaneously lure Mark in.

h0eranghae

The theory is that they’re prepping severance for mass market, so the public don’t have to experience things they don’t want to. Hate going to the dentist? Hate airplanes? Writing thank you cards? Get severed!! Gemma’s definitely their Guinea pig and it’s the saddest most horrific thing ever to have to experience. Can’t help but feel an incredible amount of pain and sadness when it comes to her. Also suspect Cold Harbor will kill her, hence the suffocating or drowning question. Don’t wanna experience death? You won’t have to!! (But your innies will)

Fetid Moppet

Is each room designed to be stressful to the person being tested to help them balance the tempers? They specifically mentioned Gemma hates writing Thank You notes, during the IVF shot scene.

Cameron Hall

I have a gut feeling this season is gonna end in an absolute bastard of a cliffhanger. (React to A Thousand Blows when this seasons over please)

AutumnOnFire

Bruh, Mark better pull a "THEY CLONED TYRONE" level crash out on Lumon HQ.

John Cedar
>>166606933

If Mark ends up unknowingly killing Gemma before saving her we need to see the entire town of Kier nuked in S3 istg

malfunct
>>166601665

also i think all the rooms are designed as plausible situations for someone to sever for. like, oh, your outie hates going to the dentist, so she severed, and this is your life now. scared of flying? sever. need to write 100 thank you letters? sever. all fake narratives for her innies.

Kuro

@37:40 I think Gemma definitely knows which room is causing her pain and why. Throughout the episode they’ve been adding a mix of Mark’s memories and Gemma’s own memories If you watch it back you can see flickers of memories from each of the rooms while she’s walking through the testing floor hallways!

John Cedar

Is there some Dune like genetic manipulation shit going on here for Lumon to want to put Mark and Gemma together? THEY PRACTICALLY ENGINEERED THEIR RELATIONSHIP...who's to say they didn't have a doctor on payroll to make Gemma unable to conceive at some point and push her further into their grasp? I just can't even imagine WHY they went after these two specific people. We all knew Lumon was evil but they are on another level after this episode...

Medusa

Helena knowing all of the things they’re doing to Gemma and still doing what’s she doing to Mark is insane. Like she’s top tier trash

Prime
>>166602109

For clarification, Jessica mentioned the cable shot using no CGI.

Cho

This episode unlocked SO MANY THINGS! The goal of Lumon is make everyone "Kier's children"--but not everyone wants to sever for work. So how do you get the masses to undergo this procedure? Promise they'll never have to experience anything unpleasant again. Never be afraid of the dentist. Never be afraid to fly. You don't even have to do minor things you hate like writing thank you cards. And the ultimate thing no one wants to do? Die. Your innie will experience death for you. That's Cold Harbor. That's the big pitch.

Cho

The testing guy who's obsessed with Gemma also being at the IVF clinic when Mark and Gemma were trying makes me siiiiick

Zigon

So it looks like roshi called the multi personality thing. It does seem like each room activates a new personality. It might actually be severed 2.0 and Lumon might be gearing up for a mass release of severance so they can have people severed for appointments or trips they don’t want to take, etc…

Denn B

Personal theory, they’re trying to recreate the human through controlled experiments. All the rooms are human experiences meant to provoke growth. I don’t understand how the severed floor is involved but I’m assuming when cold harbor is done, Gemma will experience it and undergo ego death. Creating the first kier human

Bozo

how do 2 teachers afford such a nice place 😭

Cho

Gemma feeling pain in her mouth and hands and knowing what room did it but not recalling how reminds me of Petey saying "You carry that hurt down with you, you just don't know what it is" Like, people can sever all they want to get away from unpleasant things but you'll still feel it. It's still YOU in the end

cami ً

each room is a completely different innie version of gemma, and the most popular theory (that I've seen) is that lumon is testing out how much pain an innie can endure, refine it (hence the rooms being named after the files mdr has worked on) and essentially create a "painless" life for those who can afford it. very horrific stuff

Ej

I think Gemma definitely signed up for something doing that test they sent her.

Cho
>>166608825

I don't think so. I think they're working on pitching severance to the masses. Your average person hates going to the dentist, flying (or at least experiencing turbulence), and has little stuff they hate doing like writing thank you cards. Lumon is working on a way to market the chip to people by showing it can sever you in real time so you don't have to experience bad stuff

Joshua Tuggle

the parallel between gemma and the dr guy and mark and helena ? like how they both started having feelings for them.

bleach

This episode better win an award

Frederick

Bro these transitions are killing me. Like I’m getting sprayed with an LMG 😂

Cho
>>166604956

This is my fear too. I'm hoping he was just referring to the Christmas room since they're "married" in there

Digiflash

What a crazy episode! Did you notice that the people watching Mark and Co. through the screens look like Mark, Helly, Dylan and Irving?

H

poor gemma :( helly R and mark’s love story gotta stop or im literally gonna stop watching omg

Denn B
>>166608825

That too aswell but the chikhai bardo and the ego death and the overall super religious themes at lumon are foreshadowing their actual intentions. There’s constant references to being “reborn” so I’m assuming they’re trying to play god

TJ

Gotta wait a whole week man FAWK this.

dawn

i dont know how to feel abt the helly/mark romance after this ep, i want him back with his wife lol

H

Also the doctor saying mark has a daughter now it’s probably foreshadowing of helena’s baby noooooo😩

Cho

Sheera's Cobelvig impression has me ctfu LMAO

Cho
>>166608825

Oh for sure they have bigger aspirations and I'm excited to see what they are (I have half-baked theories though). I just don't think they're putting innies through never-ending turbulence for that purpose. They need to get everyone chipped so they're appealing to the base fear of pain/death. Getting everyone chipped is the first step

Cho
>>166608264

lmao Thank you. A lot of people realized the same thing. I'd be too afraid to share my thoughts if I didn't see other people shared them too 👀

Cho

Cold Harbor is gonna be Gemma drowning to death man I'm so anxious They asked her specifically if she'd be more afraid of suffocation or drowning and looked at the machine to see how true the statement was. I need a car to hit Mark so he never finishes Cold Harbor tbh

User10101

Crazy ep. NEED GEMMA TO ESCAPE!!!

min_jung white
>>166608264

If that's true then it boggles my mind why anyone would need to "experience" death and how that would even work. You'd still die in the end so that personally doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Your body will grow old and die. There's more to this.

Alex
>>166604956

Oh for sure, Gemma left one of the rooms wearing a really short cheerleading uniform, and the "doctor" had been dressed as a coach, and one of the other employees said that Gemma had tried to break his fingers.

Alex
>>166611698

Yeah, I also predict that Cold Harbor is drowning/asphyxiation death. They're doing human trials so maybe they can market people severing their own death experience because it scares them.

Guns
>>166604956

Yeah, tried to break his fingers… what those fingers trynna do??

Cho
>>166608264

Your mouth still hurts after the dentist and your hand still cramps after writing thank you cards. Your body is still changed after childbirth even if you don't experience the pain of labor. Mark still felt Gemma's absence will severed even though he'd never met her. The reprieve that severance gives you from pain is flimsy, that's a running theme. Think Picture of Dorian Gray. Or even Helly hanging herself while going up the elevator so Helena would experience the death instead. It's that same principle They asked Gemma if she'd be more afraid of suffocating or drowning to death, too. Not all deaths are painless. Lumon definitely has a larger goal in mind but this is what the chip is being primed to market for

RichterBelmont

Lumon is like the umbrella corporation having their hands in everything

Cho
>>166611698

Exactly. Not everyone wants to be severed for work but no one wants to die a painful death

Fred
>>166611698

the theory sounds so solid yall making me sad cause i was hoping they were finna be on some anime harem innie mark with helly and outtie with gemma

Cam Kaneki

Being severed multiple times is some serious bullshit got one innie who’s perpetually stuck at the dentist. Another experiences plane crashes One stuck forever writing Christmas cards… they gotta free that woman.

That guy joe

Don’t know if yall noticed but the people in the dark room observing MDR are literally temu versions of our people, also since Irving was “fired” his clone was no longer there in the next scene. I wonder what Helena Eagan thinks of there being a doppelgänger of her, or if she even knows, or cares?

min_jung white
>>166611698

How would that even work I literally can't wrap my head around it. So if you go through a near death experience you ll have an innie that goes through that experience in case that experience may happen to you in the future again. I find that pointless tbh. How many times would that even happen to you for it to warrant severance? It's statistically very low. And we know that severance doesn't work in the sense that your lived memories get boxed away (for example Mark. He knows his wife "died" and severed to escape the mutinous day to day life).

Fred

a little touch i loved is how mark before the accident looked so put together the clean shaved beard, hair cut and set neat. We never see him that clean again :( his wife death hit him so hard we see that again and again

Cho
>>166611698

I think what’s messing you up is you think the outie stays alive somehow. No, the whole person dies but the outie is spared the gruesomeness of it. Think Helly hanging herself but making Helena experience it back in season 1 Everyone dies. It’s the one constant in life. Fear of death and the uncertainty of how it happens is very common

Jack in the box

Wouldn’t be surprised if Gemma had some sort of Stockholm syndrome, I get she hit dude with a chair but she could have done that at any point why wait till now?

Guns

I dont think the doctor is an Eagan. The big dude wouldn’t talk to him in such a condescending way if he was

XORA NICO

If yall go back to where Mark & Gemma walked into the fertility clinic, the “dentist” is at the left of the frame. Gemma’s hand hurts when writing the Christmas cards because she’s not left handed. In all the Gemma flashbacks, she’s writing with her right hand. That “dentist” done fell in love with Gemma. Yuck 🤣 he in every room tryna get her to love him. SHE DONT WANT YOU NIGGA! 🤣

Marquist Simms

Best episode so far. Cinematic masterpiece stellar directing

Fred

this show can go so far imagine a higher up from lumon or jus a high power person says they want an innie for a certain reason but it’s actually to treat them nice. Like there could be someone on the inside who got severed for information and treated their severed half like a person, would the severed half like learn shii would the memories merge easier we could get so many perspectives off this one concept i love it

Fred
>>166614004

irving was passing messages to his innie but his innie couldn’t figure out the context imagine if the context was known

Fred

they just in there fucking her teeth up you don’t need to go to a dentist that much it’s like twice a year and if it’s that often why is she in there for two hours 😭 mfs dead jus stabbing her perfectly healthy gums

Kevin

Amazing episode, I’ve watched it three times already. And great reaction! Another call out is, if you go back to the scene where they’re talking about the severance barrier. Notice how all of the people there seem to look similar to the main MDR cast. Temu Mark, Dylan, Irving. It almost makes me wonder if they’re using severance to not only market its benefits for traumatic events but also seeing if they can use severance to manufacture specific personalities in people. A first step at cloning.

Ren Lichtfoot

I feel like MDR is actively "deleting" emotions that spring up from the Severance process. And they are putting Ms. Casey through repeated types of physical and psychological torture in order to "perfect" the severance process. MDR is deleting Gemma's "overflow" emotions, the trauma from those events. Basically, they want to be able to make mindless drones of anyone with the severance implant. I think once they perfect this process, that's the goal. This is some borderline mark of the beast shit!

Ren Lichtfoot
>>166610387

They only do for a short time, I guess it was to represent which of the people they were shadowing.

Ghost_Troupe

The freaky doctor can be seen walking past Gemma and Mark in the IVF clinic also

Ghost_Troupe
>>166613640

Because he said Mark moved on. She knew he was lying once he said that. That's why she kept saying "Mark" after coming back up.

Marquist Simms

If you guys notice the doctor who is working with gemma was actually in the clinic with marc and gemma he walked past them I think he has a crush on her by way he stared at them

Elijah Leighton

my current theory is that the MDR files are different severance protocols for specific situations which are shown in the rooms. the protocols somehow alter emotional response to make the severed person more submissive to get through the situation. This leads into my cold harbor theory, i believe cold harbor is a protocol for severed soldiers, they would need the most extreme emotional strength to work successfully and like they said earlier in the season it would change the entire world.

SoOriginalAlan

This show is exactly what i call a PEAK FUCKING TV SHOW

britt

FREE GEMMA TILL ITS BACKWARDS

Frank Decker

Ms. Casey asked how long she's been out because last season, they told her that her welness session with mark would be her last session. it implies she's never waking up. So when she did, she was supply. Not only that, Gemma's wasnt being revived monday thru friday like everyone else. She was only ms.casey when lumon needed someone to do a wellness check. That could be the next day. 3 days from noww. 4 weeks. etc. Hey sense of time most be extremely out of whack

Guns
>>166605667

The moment Gemma gets reintegrated, she just starts yelling ☠️

Les Thompson

I don't think it was a filter. I believe they actually shot this on a 35mm film camera, but I could be wrong.

Fred

with a show this plot juicy ngl I would love if you guys reacted to an episode breakdown after the next couple eps maybe to clear stuff and for theories.

Imari

Ms Casey is the most docile version of her innies I assume that’s why they have her right on the severed floor so she can never truly try to escape

bobo

ms. cassey is so robotic because in season 1 she said to mark before leaving permanently that she was only 107 hours old. and in those 107 hours shes a therapist and just says random shit to the innies to make them feel better. she has had almost no social interactions with others.

Amanda Hill

So the shadow people monitoring MDR look like the simulations of them from the ORTBO, the one that looked like Irv even disappeared after Irv was fired. I believe all these separate rooms are meant to “tame her tempers” using this multi-severance. Like the Christmas card one, when in a flashback Mark says she hates writing thank you notes. They are also likely trying to commercialize severance. Hate going to the dentist? Sever yourself. Hate flying? Sever yourself. Hate working out? Sever yourself. Then they test her actual self to see if she feels any emotions coming out of those severed experiences to see if her “severance barriers” are holding. And yes Dr. Mauer was the guy in every room, and they showed him working at the fertility clinic Mark & Gemma went to, we see him for one sec in the lobby.

2A2

I was a bit confused when Gemma tried to escape. I was starting to think maybe she doesn’t know that she is severed or what severance is? Why would she escape on an elevator if elevators are known to be what activates the chips when traveling through Lumon? Like was this just a desperate attempt to leave knowing it would be a severed version of herself where she wouldn’t remember anything, or does Gemma think she’s just in some crazy clinical research hostage situation where she just can’t remembers what happens? Idk man, maybe it’s nothing. Also, for the longest, I thought Dr. Mauer was Burt’s husband at first.

Joni
>>166617730

i think she was taking a bet and hoping that her severed version would try to escape as well. also there's no way to get out from that place other than the elevator

CocainCowboy

We gotta start posting these on Fridays my guy

Ren Lichtfoot
>>166613640

Nah, they obviously were holding her captive with the promise that she could eventually go home. The severance process would prevent her from accurately determining how long she'd been down there too. That dude was sick, he has an obsession with Gemma and he's been detaining her and abusing her for years now.

traplikemaxxx

Lupa be so lost😹😹love him tho

Joe Gunawan

The flashback were shot on 16mm film, whereas the show is usually on the Sony Venice 2. So it's not mere filter, it's shot on film. The Director is the show's usual Cinematographer, Jessica Lee Gagne. This was her directorial debut!

Casual

Alright ive seen enough…… everyone at lumon gotta die

Co

Just one minute in and shout out to Roshi for noticing that Lumon was extracting the blood. I did not catch that. What's even more impressive is that he caught that while also being a reactor for us. Keep it up!

It's ya boy Ed

I'm airing the entire company idgaf these Lumon mfs are the definition of EVIL and they gotta GO!!!

cheezeblade

I know its part of the story but like im getting reallllyyy tired of the endless resources for a cult. like, how many absolute brainless zealots work here. WHAT the fuck did keir even do to gain this following? It jsut seems so disproportionate. WHAT do all of these people have to gain from gaslighting and manipulating people this way? I need some major answers by the end of this season or im probably not gonna watch season 3.

Devin Eleven
>>166621443

I mean look at the current US political system or 1940's WWII. It's not unrealistic AT ALL. Or look at literally any villainous group real or fiction: Decepticons, COBRA, Hydra, Galactic Empire. At least Lumon has an actually legitimate front of helping people with their pharmaceuticals and 'giving back' to the community etc

Ej

Just noticed Mark says she hates writing Thank You notes and they have here writing them back to back is crazy!

kingBD
>>166621443

Slow burn shows tend to drag major plot lines but the good shows like this one still engages u in other things. If u drop this show because u dont get certain answers then ✌🏾 🤣 also remember its still only the second season….

janelle

mark said gemma hates writing thank you notes… then lumon has innie gemma writing a stack of them… they’re definitely trying to provoke emotions or fears. i assume being on a flight that’s crashing, or being at the dentist, are both fears of gemma’s

EJ Katt

I got a thought. All those rooms seem to have the name of like a city. And I think it's safe to assume that Gemma has multiple innies. Each innie is from it's own "town" or room. Cold Harbour seems to be the outlier, not exactly the name of a town. I think Cold Harbour is some kind of form of reintegration. Cause what kind of things happen at harbour? Imports and exports, people from different towns meeting each other, trading and sharing. Hence each room being the name of a town. I think though Cold Harbour might "kill" the outtie, all innie(s), assuming it is some kind of reintegration. Especially in Gemma's case, reintegrating at least the way we've seen so far cannot be good for Gemma. Reconciling an outtie with their one innie seems hard enoigh.

tubbagoob

It's not a filter it's just legit shot on film 😭

Alexis Sullivan

Saw a breakdown that said Lumon must have found something in her blood when she was at the blood bank and that's why they started targeting her. They may have even caused her miscarriages to get her to go to the IVF facility to get more info outta her.

Alexis Sullivan

The separate rooms are clearly testing her tempers by torturing her and I guess seeing if they can stabilize her tempers admist trauma? And Roshi was right that each room is a different personality, they got her severed 8 ways from Sunday which is insane

Tulip
>>166614194

Lmaoo. Like I know they're probably just trying to control for extreme situations or events by pushing each innie to face the worst extent of the traumas/fears but it should never be that deep at the dentist's pls.

Felicia Williams

Y’all missed that the creepy ass doctor was at the IVF clinic too.

Eric Stormbringer
>>166607941

Helena is very stubborn in her belief that innies are "not people." She reiterates this several times throughout the series- in fact the very first time we see her is her telling Helly on video that "you are not a person". It's what she has trained herself to believe in order to go through with all the horrible things she does and why she can do things like rape Mark without feeling any real guilt. I think an interesting part of this series will be if Helena starts to realize that the innies are people- especially after her intimate relations with them in the first 5 episodes.

AD

The insane thing is when mark helly and Dylan get down to save Gemma from the basement floor. They will turn into their outies cuz of the elevator. Mark although will be unchanged cuz of reintegration, Dylan would just be confused af and helly becomes helena

Muse of Salzburg

I feel like they’re stress testing severance with Gemma as a subject, and chose her because they saw she was the right fit because they had a bunch of her medical data from the fertility clinic and blood donation drive. Cold harbour seems to me like they’re taking the emotional data from her experiences in the rooms, passing them on to Cold Harbour and Macro Data Refinement, and they’re are using it to modify the chip to seal off any potential for anything to slip between an innie and an outie. They’re using Gemma to test for bugs in severance in order to make it 100% air-tight. What I’m most interested to see is how Mark fits into this. I have to assume he was also somehow scouted and subliminally messaged into taking a severed job, but does him working on Gemma’s data have any special significance?

Sam

This episode gave Lumon cartoon villian qualities. "Oh? You don't like writing thank you cards? The solution to this is to make a version of you write thank you cards FOREVER! HAHAHA!"

Eric Stormbringer

I have some theories about Lumon (I know chances are high I'm wrong but let me cook) I think there are 2(or more) factions at Lumon. One is the corporate faction that wants what all corporations want- more money, more power and more control. We know Lumon is pretty much a staple of the world- they are in several countries- have contacts in the highest echelons of government and media. We see them manufacturing all sorts of products across all industries. It's a pretty solid footprint so what else is there? Well, the next step is controlling the lives and money of both the people working for them and those that don't. Pretty much an extended version of the factory towns we've seen in real life. In order to do this, they must both establish a self-contained economy and sever as many people as they can in order to have a large workforce. Hence why there is such a public push for severance and how they are presenting severance as "the solution to all your problems." The self-contained economy part comes from the various things they are manufacturing- they are even making doors. The farm floor with goats and a pasture seems to me to be a way to try and create a self-sufficient food source. Trust Lumon for all your needs- from food to medical care to travel. The other component of this self-sufficient ecosystem is to create perfectly loyal workers. Hence the cult culture in Lumon- the strict control of what information is allowed to flow into and out of Lumon and the complete black box that is working for a company where you have no information on what even happens. No potential of whistleblowers and without any info able to leave the company- no accountability. The expansion of Lumon and their push for severance also leads to even worse down the road. If Lumon can create enough perfectly loyal workers, then they can overtly start expanding rather than covertly. Imagine a personal army of indoctrinated soldiers that are 100% loyal to Lumon, knows no morals except Lumon morals, answers to no one except Lumon and has no ties to family, friends or the outside world to inhibit their obedience to commands. In fact, that loyalty that would normally be reserved for their family, friends and country would be projected onto Kier and their "Lumon Family". Such an army could easily invade other countries and forcibly sever the inhabitants, and with Lumon's control of the government and the media- no one would be any the wiser till it's too late. I believe the other faction of Lumon is working on immortality. If you have perfect control of society and it's exactly tailored to suit your every whim- what's the next step? Why it's to ensure you can enjoy the fruits of your labor indefinitely. I think Cold Harbor is Lumon's ultimate attempt to cheat death. I think Cold Harbor consists of stages. One to see if you can take a braindead body- sever it and restore the knowledge. I think Gemma really did die (at least brain death) and Lumon resuscitated her. We see that severed Gemma has trouble with things like writing- something we know innies don't struggle with (Burt leaving notes, Petey drawing the map etc). It could be that when Gemma's outie died- some of her external info was lost and the process of "refining" is an attempt to restore that info. I think the next step after that is to "kill the ego" or the personality. If they manage to restore all the outie's knowledge without the personality, then they have effectively created a blank slate human. I think the purpose of exposing Gemma to all her fears is part of the process to kill her ego. She has no control of her life, and she spends every moment of that life doing things that are anathema to her very personality. Remember in real life trauma is known to erase memories or even split personalities. By exposing her to constant trauma they may be hoping to completely fragment Gemma's personality or wipe it clean without her even realizing it. The final step of this process once the blank human is created would be to transfer minds from one person onto the blank slate human. That would effectively mean that the transplanted person could live forever. This is the wildest part of the theory with the least supporting evidence. However, I think that Ms Cobel actually provides some evidence of this. We know that she fanatically worships Lumon but why? Well, we see that her husband who she apparently loved very much died. She has a chip she carries around with her all the time that is not Petey's. She takes a very keen and personal interest in the Cold Harbor process and has made many unsolicited attempts to get Ms Casey and Mark together. She also knows how to extract the chip from the brain very precisely and quickly as we saw in Petey's funeral. Why does she know how to do this delicate surgical procedure so well? I think Ms. Cobel is looking for a way to bring her dead husband back and is why she is so invested in Cold Harbor.

And it's even worse that the dentist that's infatuated with her is making her do with her left hand. Gemma is right-handed.

It also may not have been her first escape attempt, recall how the Frolic guy said Gemma had attempted to break the doctor’s fingers in the past before? Also in an interview with Gemma’s actress she said she approached the episode with the mindset that Gemma’s definitely tried to escape multiple times before, just hoping each time she can get Ms. Casey to go further.

The only scene that didn't work for me in this phenomenal episode was Devon wanting to call Cobel. If that's just a way to reintegrate her (ha) back into the plot then that feels unusually sloppy for an otherwise masterfully written show, but imma let them cook with that regardless. I mean I can understand Devon to an extent, that is her brother and Cobel is literally the only other person she knows who could maybe possibly do something to help but you're hedging quite a lot on the off chance that she has a grudge with Lumon and won't use it as a springboard back in. 9.9/10 episode.

So on one hand i see the vision of having everyone get this chip to serverance their self for “small” things like work, dentist appointments, flying, working out, etc and making a crap ton of money but in the hands of evil this is just a big cult where u can control things

Going by the other rooms, Cold Harbor is either Drowning or Grief.

I think maybe Gemma went to Lumon and asked them to fake her death, - maybe they promised they could make her a baby or something weird

After watching this episode, I’m back to believing that Ms. Huong might actually be Mark and Gemma’s daughter. We now know that Mark and Gemma went to an IVF clinic run by Lumon. There’s no guarantee Lumon followed standard medical protocols or disposed of their eggs and sperm once they decided to stop the IVF process. Instead, Lumon could have kept them for their own purposes. Given Lumon’s shady nature, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think they used their advanced technology to “speed up” the process and grow Ms. Huong in a lab or had a severed surrogate carry her for a while. Nothing’s off limits with Lumon in my mind. I also think it’s way too specific that Ms. Huong looks biracial (Asian and white) and is introduced in the season when Mark is learning more about Gemma being alive and Lumon’s dark side. The doctor’s mention of Mark “having a daughter” gave me this idea too. Plus, Ms. Huong’s attitude towards innies (believing they aren’t human and don’t deserve compassion from Milchick) makes me think she’s been raised or conditioned by Lumon for a long time in a similar way to Cobel, who was described as a “soldier” of Lumon. Maybe Ms. Huong is their next soldier? I’m prepared to be wrong, but that’s my current theory. 😂

I think there’s a highly chance that Mark is gonna be father due to how many hints are in the last episode and intro, but I’m wondering which father is he gonna be for, Gemma or Helly? Knowing that Mark had unprotected sex with Helly twice, she’s probably gonna pregnant which might be her goal to get back at Helly R and raise next generation of Ker. On the other hand, Gemma went to IVF clinic that happens to be owned by Lumon since she wanted a child, so knowing Lumon has both of their DNA they could’ve use that to make miss Huong. Still we don’t know much about miss Huong, but she obviously have a much bigger role to play here.
