GojosHoho

What a terrible way to die💀 So shocked you get knocked off balance and into the abyss😭 that's trash

Limini

she slapped away the ghost but i think shes just a human who might be "mixed" and has a sxth sense but not like full on hikaru monster

N

YOU DIED BECAUSE OF A BBL TREEE STFU

I'Zanay Rogers

She was getting rid of that ghost thing.

Emily A

I don’t think nonuki made him black out, yoshiki had a panic attack

Emily A

Yoshiki’s cries broke my damn heart jfc….

Sade

Hikaru dying because he was distracted by the BBL tree and then using his dying wish to make sure Yoshiki is never alone is peak chaotic bisexual behavior 😂

XORA NICO

This man saw some tree tiddays, slipped, fell and died

KomodoughDragon

It's an easy thing to sort of gloss over, but I think the moment when Yoshiki is looking at the takoyaki vendor's cross necklace has a couple of meanings. There aren't any churches in Kubitachi despite the outlying towns having a bunch of them. There's implication that the takoyaki vendor is a bit of an outcast because of it, and he treats the kids to free food because he sees Kaoru as being treated like an outcast, as well. But also, Yoshiki knows that Christianity isn't the dominant belief in Kubitachi, yet he sees someone proudly displaying their beliefs despite the possibility of social outcast. I'm sure he's jealous that he can't do the same, and the gossip culture in town (along with the other gay community member being referred to as diseased) is partly why he's so deep in the closet.

KomodoughDragon

Yoshiki's voice actor continues to be incredible. Those cries by the river/beach sounded way too real, gave me chills. I really wonder what it was like in the sound booth when he was recording for it.

Emily A

Last comment on this ep I swear LMAOOO but I’m so happy you guys are really catching onto everything and the messaging/lgbt undertones of this show (not even undertones atp lol) especially when hikaru was dying and in his final moments was thinking of yoshiki :( thank u guys for always making me crack tf up but also being serious and rly paying attention when it matters

kidBuku

Is that shaved ice thing true?

ximechata

imagine dying bc of a sexy tree and then an alien takes your body and steals your man

Ekko08

The 3 of them enjoying the summer festival was honestly pretty cute. Finding out that Yoshiki saw Hikaru's body makes him feeling guilty about hanging around the "revived" Hikaru even more understandable and it just sucks. Trading and organ for a barrier seems EXTREME. I'm wondering if the other method he mentioned would be using someone else's organs. He also seems to be missing skin on the back of his neck 🧐

chisom

the booby tree would've got my ass too tbh

angel

that fuckin tree bro 😭

Just Gene

To me it seems that lady at the end was simply exercising the train ghost. I think she's a retired exorcist maybe because she lost a child.

Goofyaah

I don’t think Hikaru had romantic feelings for Yoshiki but Yoshiki did, even the way Hikaru died showed that. Hikaru is just a W friend who saw that Yoshiki is seen as an outsider and didn’t want want him to feel like that, he’d be hoping that he’s ok without him bc he’s his best friend.

KingdorismHD

No, the lady is an exorcist. She sealed the train tracks.

maseken

Nah bro, old lady was excercising the train ghost cmonn haha

Ron H

what i wanna know is how many times has buddy done the organ/boundary barter? is he good??

Candice Blair

LOL, Can't believe one of my favorite K-pop groups, ILLIT real life ad for 7-11 was in the anime on the door.

botanbutton

Trying my best to resist the urge to read the manga~~~

Isaac

Imma be real, Hikaru dying in the most unserious way, death via shocked by a foin ass looking tree, makes sense for Hikaru. Hes a clown shoes boy, died in a clown shoes way. And trees do be lookin strangely exotic at times. I've seen the pics on Google of trees shaped funny like that. And im pretty sure Yoshiki passed out from a panic attack. He was surprisingly calm seeing his dead best friend bae thing but the shock caught up to him and he passed out.

Isaac

I doubt the old lady is a monster inhabitanting the body. Her story, she said her late husband suddenly came back to her and one day her 'husband' gave her son an injury that cant heal. Maybe her family background they had spiritual people capable of exercising spirits which is what she did to the rail road ghoul.

Jelly016

The shaved ice thing is definitely interesting. As a chemist, I've extracted a few compounds that smells citrusy or vanilla-y but doesn't actually taste like citrus or vanilla even when diluted. It turns out that if it smells like something you know and looks like something you know, then your brain will fill out the rest and kind of trick you into tasting something. Like if it's red and smells like strawberries, then it's probably strawberry flavor. But if it smells like strawberries, and it's blue, your brain has a harder time interpreting what you're tasting. It definitely depends on how that shaved ice syrup is made. Sometimes they do add actual flavor compounds

Isaac

Anyone else headcanon Kaoru being autistic? She's not in school due to bad social skills. Japan has an awful track record when it comes to mental health and conditions like this and them being out in the boonies makes it even worse since nobody's ever gonna understand her and what she needs.

P. A.

I think the text was not fully written properly with the yukata scene. Surely the bro was like "ain't that nice, she complimented you!" and not straight out savage "nah fam, that's trash" lmao

Mrlanie

Think that Yosihiki’s zoom in on the takoyaki guy’s cross necklace was meant to represent a sense of jealousy, that this guy is “out” as a Christian in a town that implicitly disapproves of “outsider” religions (no churches, unlike neighboring villages) while he is still deeply closeted as a gay person because of prejudiced attitudes. It might also be why the vendor gave them free food - solidarity with his fellow outsiders.

PatiPati

I need you to let go of the idea that miss Kurebayashi is an entity.. it's getting ridiculous. 😂 And it's simply a waste of time..

ViralCorgi

8:45 When Yoshiki was being "killed" by Demon Hikaru last ep he had a vision of what looked like Hikaru's ancestor holding a head. Something worth noting.

ViralCorgi

15:41 I don't think it was supernatural, but just his body's natural defense mechanism. He had a panic attack and his brain couldn't process what he saw so he went into shock and ended up running back home without realizing it and shutting down for the next few days. He wasn't ready to face Hikaru's death.

ViralCorgi

17:16 Man this cuts deep because it shows just HOW MUCH he lost when Hikaru died. It wasn't just his first love, it was his first and closest friend and really his only source of peace. That's so much to lose at once.

Theo A. Vorster

I’m surprised Roshi and co. still hold the interpretation that the original Hikaru had romantic feelings for Yoshiki. When I read these equivalent parts in the manga (i.e. the fact that original Hikaru wasn’t very familiar with concepts such as homosexuality and that he specifically died because he got horny distracted by a curvaceous feminine-looking tree) I always figured that was meant to signal that original Hikaru was just heterosexual (yes I know bisexuality exists, but my point is specifically about what the narrative chose to highlight and tell about original Hikaru).

ViralCorgi

Random Theory -- If you get attacked by a demon does the bruise never disappear? The woman mentioned that the demon gave her son a "wound that would never heal", Yoshiki still has his bruise from when Hikaru went wild, and the exorcist dude has what looks like a bruise on his neck. I'm wondering if that's a "marker" of being in contact with a demon.

PatiPati

This is the first anime I've seen straight up mentioning homosexuality and lgbt.. a lot of manga readers were concerned that they were gonna censor it.. which adds a lot to the importance of this story.

XHuyen

I have the same reaction as u guys after knowing the real reason hikaru died:))). Like...why?

LelaniG

12:13 what was that Roshi??

naomixo

Hikaru's death is such a good mix of silly comic relief and a genuinely awful way to die. It's such a simple tragedy, sometimes just slipping is all it takes! The Christian cross scene as well I've seen some people interpret it... interestingly. Personally, that scene to me demonstrates that Yoshiki is sternly reminded he has to deal with the reality of where he lives. He's still a highschooler and has to endure living in a region that has conservative views for at LEAST a few more years, whether they're Christian or not. PLUS word travels so quick that even people from the village over know his family's business, imagine if he tried to come out, everyone in the tri-state area knows you're gay AND thinks you're a freak? Fuck that 😭

sav

damn, death by sexy tree 💔

louari

You guys can argue that Hikaru died because of the sexy tree means that he’s heterosexual. But eventually the person he cared about the most was still Yoshiki 😌 and there’s a chapter in the manga, Hikaru was reaching out to “Hikaru” and said “tell him that I like him” before he died. This story is not BL story, doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings for each other

Tancho23

Hear me out: a driller, sponge and gloves. 🙂‍↕️

Anto

It's kinda crazy to me that people are analyzing this show without looking at all the subtext of it. Kinda crazy to just believe Hikaru is straight because he might have looked at a thicc tree when the whole narrative is that "Hikaru" has feeling for Yoshiki because he took the emotions and memories of the body and Yoshiki is attached to him even though that's not old Hikaru because it's a part of himself he doesn't feel comfortable leaving. He allowed him to be his true self, and now this new Hikaru is even more supportive of that!

OnceUponABowl

its a tragedy his friend died from one slip but im glad he wasnt murdered at least

Theo Vorster

A major thematic thrust of the series though is how "Hikaru" is still fundamentally not the original Hikaru, and thus "Hikaru"'s feelings for Yoshiki are also independent of any memories he gained from the original. Like we see that "Hikaru" likes different thing than what the original liked, the new "Hikaru" likes films the old one didn't and is much more interested in cats than the original Hikaru.

B23

i just think the lady exorcised whatever entity was on the train tracks

Delinda Arts

If A24 ever produced an anime or an animated show, this would definitely fit in with their tastes and aesthetics

PJ Rivera

The lady just used some dandadan ritual magic to banish whatever was haunting the tracks

Bona Fide

i'm just glad my boy didnt suffer
