I come from a family where through marriage the only regions we don’t share blood with right now are East Asia and North America so I get Mormon girly not really getting even why it’d be a big deal. As for the immigrants dating trauma, that’s such a real thing. I’ve seen a lot of guys and girls really be into the traits that characterise the ethnic majority because it is basically their desire to belong to the host culture. They don’t think it’s self hate, they just want to be “real” Americans/Brits/etc. in a way. I’ve always found that super sad. Like, obviously if you’re surrounded by only one ethnicity that’s who you’ll date because the only ones of your ethnicity are your relatives. It’s not always self hate but when the person switches to not even considering someone on the basis of being the same race…that’s icky. Especially with China there is such ethnic diversity, and different ideas about gender roles depending on the region and stuff so I think both Patrick and Anna suffer from internalised racism.
